ABSTRACT

Vegetable oils have their specific physicochemical properties due to which they are playing vital role in human nutritional diet for health benefits. Cottonseed oil is obtained from various species of cotton seeds that are famous to be grown mainly for their fiber quality. The most prominently used specie is Gossypium hirsutum. It is obvious that the seeds of different variety of cotton vary as grown in diverse agroclimatic conditions with respect to oil, fats and protein contents. Cottonseed oil is routinely used for cooking and food manufacturing products. Cottonseed oil obtained after proper extraction/processing steps from crude state to refined oil in a variety of ways. Cotton crop is considered for their dual-use purpose, for fiber quality and oil production to promote health benefits in the world. Keeping in view the above facts, this review clearly demonstrated an overview about physicochemical and functional properties of cottonseed oil to promote health benefits associated with the use of this oil. The overall characteristics and all concerned health benefits of CSO will further improve their usefulness is a compact way. We have summarized a brief multi-dimensional features of CSO in all aspects up to the best of our knowledge for the end researchers who can further research in the respective aspect.

ABSTRACT

The cotton industry has a strong impact factor in the Brazilian economy and the state of Mato Grosso stands out for being the largest upland-type cotton producer and also holds the largest cattle herd in the country, conditions that stimulate the use of cottonseed pie and cottonseed meal in animal feed. Whereas gossypol is present in cotton by-products and their effects on reproduction can reduce the animal fertility, this research evaluated the effect of diets with different free gossypol contents in the testicular morphometry and semen quality of Nelore bulls. 28 bulls were randomly distributed in six treatments: T0, receiving no free gossypol; T1, receiving 1.08g / bull / day; T2, receiving 2.07g / bull / day; T3, receiving 3.24g / bull / day; T4, receiving 3.82g / bull / day and T5, receiving 5.08g / bull / day of free gossypol respectively. The animals in each treatment were kept confined in an averaged area of 100m2, having fresh water, troughs for mineral mixture and roughage / concentrate. The consumption of 3.24g of free gossypol / bull / day altered the bulls sperm quality and testicular morphometry.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of diets containing whole cottonseed (WC) on blood biochemical parameters of bulls. Thirty bulls with 30±6 months and 382.7±28.4kg were kept in feedlot (85 days) and fed the following WC levels: 0, 2.22, 4.44, 6.66, 8.88 and 11.11%. In comparing biochemical indicators from the beginning to the end of the experiment, the control group (CG) and those fed diets containing 2.22, 8.88 and 11.11% of WC had an increase (P<0.05) in serum Ca concentrations (8.34±0.65−9.56±0.92mEqL-1). In relation to Fe (202.79±69.04−300.04±79.88µg/dL), the CG and those treated with 6.66% WC showed an increase (P<0.05) in serum concentrations. As to the Mg (1.92±0.18−2.40±0.27mEqL-1), groups treated with diet containing 2.22, 4.44 and 6.66% of WC had higher (p<0.05) concentrations at the end of the study. Regarding blood lipids, groups with diets containing 2.22; 4.44; 6.66 and 8.88% of WC increased (p<0.05), respectively, in concentrations of HDL, TG, VLDL and COL. The group that received 11.11% of WC increased (P<0.05) in the concentrations of COL and HDL. It can be concluded that diets containing WC, caused no alterations in the concentrations of blood parameters analyzed in this study, with the exception of Mg.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Sensory and instrumental analyses evaluated the meat and fat characteristics of feedlot-finished steers fed a diet containing cottonseed. Global impression, texture, meat color, and fat color were assessed. Thirty Nellore bulls with an average age of 30 ± 6 months and initial body weight of 382.7 ± 28.4kg were kept in feedlot stalls and fed the following cottonseed levels: 0; 2.22 %; 4.44 %; 6.66 %; 8.88 %; 11.11 % of the dietary dry matter. The cottonseed used in this experiment had an average free gossypol content of 4.5g/kg of cottonseed. The overall impression of the samples, assessed by the triangle test for difference, did not differ for more than 62 % of the panelists (P>0.01). The shear strength of roasted meat varied from 6.00 to 6.54kg. According to texture profile analysis (TPA), the hardness, springiness, and chewiness of roast meat ranged from 24.15 to 28.01 N, 0.52 to 0.56, 8.42 to 11.01 N, respectively; of raw meat, 9.51 to 13.86 N, 0.26 to 0.29, and 1.38 to 1.81 N, respectively. The different treatments did not affect meat texture, meat color, or fat color (P>0.05). Meat color, luminosity, and red intensity ranged from 37.71 to 42.85, 20.68 to 25.25, and 6.74 to 8.61, respectively; fat color, luminosity, and yellow intensity ranged from 62.26 to 63.78, 11.13 to 11.62, and 10.53 to 10.86, respectively. Cottonseed intake of up to 1.13kg/animal/day, equivalent to a free gossypol intake of 5.05g/animal/day, in place of soybean meal and ground corn, did not significantly change the global sensory impression, texture, and color of the meat and fat.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of diets containing raw or fermented cottonseed cake on reproductive characteristics of rabbit bucks. Eighteen (18) weaned crossbred (New Zealand White X Chinchilla) rabbit bucks, 6-7 weeks old, were randomly allotted to three treatments with six animals per treatment in a Completely Randomized Designed experiment. The treatment diets were T1, (Control) containing soyabean meal (SBM) as the main protein source; T2, Raw Cottonseed Cake (RCSC) - based diet and T3, Fermented Cottonseed Cake (FCSC) - based diet. The fermentation was done by inoculation with Aspergillus niger. Animals were acclimatized for one week. The feeding trial lasted for 9 weeks. At the end of this trial, 3 bucks per treatment were slaughtered and the reproductive organs dissected out for testicular and epididymal morphometrics as well as gonadal sperm assessment. Testicular morphometrics were not significantly (P>0.05) affected by the treatment. Treatment had significant (P<0.05) effect on the epididymal weight and length of rabbit buck. Testicular sperm count for the RCSC group (124.67x106) was significantly (P<0.05) lower than that of the control (182.22x106). Bucks on FCSC diet had comparable sperm count (181.50x106) with the control group. The proportion of motile sperm was significantly (P<0.05) increased from 48% in the control to 66.33% in the FCSC group. It was concluded that raw CSC had adverse effect on the sperm characteristics of rabbit bucks. However fermentation, using Aspergillus niger mitigated the adverse effect of CSC on the sperm characteristics. It is recommended that CSC to be included in diet of rabbit bucks meant for breeding purpose should be fermented by Aspergillus niger.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to evaluate the effect of intake of free gossypol on sperm quality and morphology of the testicles and epididymis of Nelore bulls. Twelve bulls were fed diets containing 3.3g of free gossypol/bull/day (cottonseed) (Group 1, n = 6) and a diet free of gossypol (Group 2, n = 6), respectively. Semen samples were collected in the beginning and end of the experiment which lasted 73 days. In the end of the study the testes and epididymis of bulls were removed to study the effect of free gossypol on histological characteristics. The average consumption of 3.3g of free gossypol/bull/day (mean 7.1mg of free gossypol/kg/day) reduced motility and sperm concentration and increased the percentage of major and total sperm defects, as well as the animals showing testes with seminiferous tubules of smaller thickness, fewer layers of spermatogenic lineage cells, smaller epididymal epithelium thickness and smaller number of sperm within the epididymal ducts, compared to animals with a diet free of gossypol (Group 2). The consumption of 3.3g of free gossypol/bull/day led to changes in morphology and morphometry of the testes and epididymis and reduced sperm quality of bulls.

ABSTRACT

Cottonseed meal is widely used as one of the protein supplement in poultry diets. Its mechanism of toxic action on chicken embryo is poorly understood. In this study, direct effects and abnormalities of cottonseed on chicken embryo were studied. Oxidative stress, cholinergic stress, mineral analysis and microscopic lesions were analyzed in chicken embryo which injected cottonseed extraction in 0.1, 1 and 10 mg concentration (with free gossypol 0.25 ppm, 2.5 ppm and 25 ppm respectively) at day 4 of incubation. Higher group had 100 percent mortality. Serum of alive chicken embryo at day 20 of incubation were measured for FRAP (ferric reducing ability of serum), total SH groups assay, cholinesterase assay and potassium concentration. The results expressed as mean±SD show to increase oxidative stress, cholinergic stress but significant difference (p<0.05) wasn't observed between groups. The significant difference was observed in potassium concentration in serum. Some evidence of hematotoxicity such as hemorrhage and higher number of puntate reticulocytes were detected. It is concluded, hematoxicity and hyperkalemia are toxicity mechanisms that could initiate in low concentrations of cottonseed in chick embryo.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the research was to determine the chemical and energetic composition of cottonseed meal produced by BUNGE Foods Company, trademark as high energy cottonseed meal (FAAE ®) and to evaluate its inclusion in the performance of broilers. The chemical, energetic and aminoacidic composition was determined using the total excretion gathering method, with two gathers a day. It was used ferric oxide to mark the beginning and the end of the gathering. The level of inclusion of the food testing in the reference diet was 20 percent. The performance was evaluated with the inclusion of cottonseed meal in a period of 9 to 42 days. During the first nine days the poultries received pre-initial feed that were common to all birds. From the ninth day, the birds received an experimental diet with substitution levels of 3 percent, 6 percent, 9 percent and 12 percent inclusion of cottonseed meal . The cottonseed meal presented 95.91 percent of dry matter, 9.8 percent of fat, 27 percent of crude protein, 4.6 percent of ash, 4.867 kcal kg-1 of crude energy, 1.32 percent of lysine and 0.35 percent of metionine. The determined value of apparent metabolizable energy corrected to nitrogen was 1.188 kcal kg-1. It was not observed effect in the performance and carcass return of the poultry at 42 days of age.

ABSTRACT

We studied the effect of a gossypol-enriched diet on the quality of semen and the morphology of testes of Nelore bulls. Sixteen animals were scheduled for 2 treatments: T1, 8 bulls fed a diet containing 20 percent cottonseed and T2, 8 bulls fed a gossypol-free diet. Semen samples were collected in order to evaluate the semen quality. At the end of the 73-day period of treatment, the testes were removed and tissue fragments were prepared for transmission electron microscopy or fixed on slides and stained with haematoxylin-eosin for light microscopy. The mean daily intake of cottonseed by T1 bulls was 1.71 kg/animal, which interfered on testes morphology; the seminiferous tubules had less thick walls, fewer layers of the spermatogenic lineage cells and reduced volumes of Sertoli cell nuclei with regard to T2 bulls. Electron microscopy analyses revealed that the Sertoli cells from T1 animals had a rough cytoplasmic membrane, lipid accumulation in the cytoplasm, deformed mitochondriae; in addition, some apoptotic spermatids were seen. T1 bulls showed reduction of sperm motility and an increase of the percentage of major and total sperm defects in relation to the animals of T2 group. It is concluded that a gossypol-enriched diet promoted alterations in the testicles morphology and it reduced the sperm quality of bulls [...]

ABSTRACT

Evaluation of in situ" degradability of DM, CP and ADF of whole linted cottonseed (WLC) when used up to 15% of the diet (dry matter basis), replacing cottonseed meal, was the main purpose of this experiment. Sorghum silage (SS) was the only roughage. Ruminal pH and rumen kinetics were also evaluated. Nine ruminal canulated steers were used in a3 x 3 change-over design to evaluate the following treatments: A = 0% WLC; B = 6.6% WLC; and C = 15.0% WLC. Sorghum silage contributed with 70% in all three treatments. DM degradability at 48h incubation time was statistically different (p 0.05) (A = 54.4%; B = 54.2% and C = 58.7%), as well as PB degradability at 12h (A = 40.3%; B = 47.7% and C = 53.1%) and ADF degradability at 48h (A = 40.3%; B = 41.2% and C = 45.6%). Ruminal volume, turn overtime and ruminal pH werent affected by the experimental diets. Substitution of WLC for cottonseed meal up to 15% diet increased degradability of DM, CP and ADF of WLC.

ABSTRACT

Binding of gossypol by gossypin and congossypin and their succinylated and sulfhydryl group-blocked derivatives has been measured. The binding by gossypin and congossypin is characterized by weak interaction. Succinylation of gossypin decreases the binding affinity whereas that of congossypin increases it. Blocking of sulfhydryl groups of both the proteins does not significantly affect gossypol binding, Succinylation dissociates gossypin and causes conformational changes whereas it does not dissociate congossypin but causes conformational changes. Sulfhydryl group blocking does not dissociate gossypin or congossypin, nor does it cause any conformational changes.

ABSTRACT

The major protein from glanded cottonseed has been isolated in a homogeneous form. Its S20, w value at 1% protein concentration is 6S in 1 Μ NaCl solution. It contains 1% carbohydrate and is free from phosphorus, gossypol (bound or free) and nucleic acid impurities. It consists of atleast seven non-identical subunits. The protein has an ultraviolet absorption maximum at 278 nm and fluorescence excitation and emission maxima at 280 nm and 325 nm respectively. Optical rotatory dispersion and circular dichroism measurements indicate that the protein consists predominantly of β-structure and random coil. The observed near-ultraviolet circular dichroic bands can be attributed to tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan residues of the protein.
