ABSTRACT

To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of transthoracic fine needle aspiration cytology(TFNAC) in the preoperative diagnosis of pulmonary nodules, a retrospective analysis was carried out on a consecutive series of 200 TFNACs. They included 186 primary malignant tumors, 66 squamous cell carcinomas, 65 adenocarcinomas, 36 small cell carcinomas, 7 large cell carcinomas, 4 carcinoids, 8 others, 9 metastatic tumors, and 5 benign tumors. On cytohistologic correlation of malignant pulmonary tumors, the pro- cedure had a sensitivity of 97.3% and a specificity of 100%. A 86.6% correct correlation between the cytologic and histologic diagnoses was achieved. Five out of the 7 undifferentiated large cell carcinomas, 10 out of the 65 adenocarcinomas, 2 out of the 36 small cell carcinomas, and 2 out of the 66 squamous cell carcinomas were turned out to be mistyped in cytologic diagnosis. We concluded that TFNAC is a highly sensitive and specific preoperative diagnostic procedure in the investigation of patients with discrete pulmonary nodules in whom the specific cell type of the malignant neoplasm has important implications in treatment modality and prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Paraganglioma is a benign tumor arising in the paraganglion system scattered throughout the body, but its cytopathologic findings arenot well known. We experienced a case of paraganglioma of carotid body diagnosed by fine needle aspiration. The patient was a 30 year-old female who suffered from the left neck mass for 3 years. The mass was 3x3crn in size without pulsation or bruit. Cytologically, the smear revealed aggregated and singly scattered tumor cells having abundant pale cytoplasm and indistinct cell borders. Their nuclei were round to oval, but enlarged nuclei were occasionally observed. The nuclear membrane was smooth with fine clumping of chromatin. Differentiation from metastatic follicular carcinoma of the thyroid gland was difficult.

ABSTRACT

Retinoblastoma is a highly malignant intraocular tumor of childhood that requires accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment. The diagnosis of retinoblastoma is based on the fundus finding and noninvasive radiologic evaluation, but sometimes retinoblastoma is clinically misdiagnosed as nonneoplastic lesion such as Coats' disease, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, toxocariasis and old retinal detachment and sometimes vice versa. We performed fine needle aspiration biopsies in two cases, in whom retinoblastoma or Coats' disease was suspected but there was diagnostic uncertainty on fundus finding, orbit CT or MRI. The cytologic diagnosis of two cases was retinoblastoma. And after enucleation final histopathologic diagnosis correlated with the cytodiagnosis. We think that fine needle aspiration biopsy may be helpful in establishing the diagnosis in difficult cases of childhood leukocoria including retionblastoma.
