ABSTRACT

Introduction: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a congenital heart condition of special interest. Interventional occlusion is the treatment of choice; however, a PDA occlude, used in this procedure, is a medical device that rarely could lead to adverse events such as hemorrhage, thrombocytopenia, etc. Case report: We present a case of a pediatric patient with severe thrombocytopenia after surgery. During her hospitalization, platelet levels remained lower and, finally, she was fully recovered without any hematological manifestation. The case was reported as a suspected adverse incident related to PDA occlude. Conclusion: After performing a cause-root analysis, we concluded that the size of the PDA occlude may be the main cause of thrombocytopenia. This case demonstrates that medical devices could lead to adverse events. Thus, it is important for clinicians to implement medical device surveillance, mainly for high-risk medical devices.

ABSTRACT

The participants were 10 young residents in the Tarapacá region (60% women, 40% men) between 18 and 29 years old. The methodology had a mixed approach of qualitative preponderance and sequential design. First, the Death Attitude Profile-Revised [DAP-R] was administered to measure five attitudes: Fear of Death, Death Avoidance, Approach Acceptance, Escape Acceptance, and Neutral Acceptance. Subsequently, semi-structured interviews were applied that deepened the results, by exploring the perceptions, emotions and thoughts of the participants during the pandemic. Finally, the quantitative and qualitative data were triangulated to obtain greater validity. The results point to these attitudes as a contextual phenomenon, the expression of which depends on various personal and environmental elements, the most important being the fears associated with family members. In young people, death was understood as a distant reality. This influenced a high neutrality and low fear of own death. The COVID-19 context acted as an influencing factor in attitudes, particularly in fear of contagion or the possibility of dying. Although the young people recognized the dangerousness of the virus, their emotional-affective needs were seen as more urgent problems. Therefore, fears in the COVID-19 context did not prevent exposure to contagion in the company of friends. These behaviors were signified as measures of psychological self-care, particularly in young people with Escape Acceptance.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

Learning disabilities (LD) represent a challenge for the educational, social and health fields. The aim was to evaluate the applicability of the Draw-a-Person with a Story (DAP-S) test considering the understanding of children with learning disabilities. Twenty children from the third grade of a Public Elementary School in São Paulo-SP, identified by the school coordination as suffering some type of LD were individually evaluated. Their drawings were analyzed according to the emotional indicators (EI) and maturational indicators (MI) proposed by Koppitz and also through the free inspection method of the projective (graphic/narrative) material. The mean for the MI was lower, and the mean for the EI was higher than the result expected for the age. The correlation between the indicators was inverse and significant, although moderate. The DAP-S contributed to a singular understanding of children with LD and made it possible to raise hypotheses about the reasons for their difficulties, clarifying the data provided by the MI and EI. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective To calculate effective dose based on the dose-area Product (DAP) measured in dental cone beam computed tomograhic (CBCT) scanning and using a conversion coefficient. Methods The method of the DAP was used to calculate the effective dose from KODAK 9500 dental CBCT scanner with fields of view (FOV) of 16 cm×15 cm and 12 cmu×8 cm.The DAP-values (mGy · cm2) were measured using a transmission ionization chamber connected to an electrometer (Doseguard 100,RTI Electronics AB,Sweden) and the chamber was placed directly on the exit of the X-ray tube. All measurements were repeated three times and averaged on each FOV data. The conversion coefficient of 0.080 μSv/mGy · cm2 was used to estimate the effective dose on the basis of DAP values, which was quoted from a literature. Results DAP values were found between the two FAOs to vary from 512 to 1 083 mGy · cm2,and the effective doses calculated with 0.080 μSv/mGy · cm2were 41 to 87 μSv.The effective doses given in this paper was lower than those reported in other literatures. Conclusions DAP measurement was found to be well defined and easy-to-use method of determining effective dose for some CBCT Units. However, determination of specific conversion coefficient in the CBCT must be further developed.

ABSTRACT

The land use systems with woody perennials species, such as cacao plantations, mitigate climate change by capturing atmospheric CO2. The aim of the study was to estimate the fixation of atmospheric carbon in total biomass in the most dominant cocoa production systems in Tolima, Colombia. The study was carried out in Rovira and Falan using a completely randomized experimental design with six cocoa production systems: monoculture, agroforestry system (SAF) with timber trees, SAF with avocado, SAF with citrus species, SAF with fruit trees and SAF with timber and fruit species with three replications. Two rectangular sampling plots 1000m² were established by sampling unit where trees with diameter of trunk at breast height (dbh) ≥ 10cm were identified and measured (dbh and total height - th). Two subplots of 256 m² by main plot, for measuring cocoa bushes were established: ht and trunk diameter at 30cm height (D30). Allometric models to estimate biomass were used. The AFS with timber and fruit species and AFS with fruit species had the greatest biomass (122.0 and 72.5t/ha). In the AFS with timber and fruit species presented the highest carbon storage in biomass with 61.0t C/ha; whereas the greatest carbon fixation rate was 17.7 t/ha/year in AFS with citrus species. The results suggest that cocoa plantations that include other plant species diversify the production and increase food security and generation of environmental services, such as capturing atmospheric carbon.

ABSTRACT

Aims: In the present study, we investigated the influence of NMDA receptor agonist (N-methyl-d-aspartate) and antagonist (D-AP7) on amnesia induced by a β-carboline alkaloid, harmane. Methodology: Animals implanted with bilateral cannulae at the CA1 regions of the dorsal hippocampus and microinjected with glutamatergic drugs. One-trial step-down was used to assess memory acquisition and then, the hole-board method to assess exploratory behaviors in adult male NMRI mice. Results: The results revealed that pre-training intra-CA1 administration of NMDA (0.5 ng/mouse) and D-AP7 (0.25 and 0.5 ng/mouse) improved and impaired memory acquisition, respectively. Also, pre-training intra-peritoneal (i.p.) administration of harmane (12 mg/kg) decreased memory acquisition. Furthermore, pre-training intra-CA1 injection of sub-threshold dose of NMDA (0.02 ng/mouse) reversed, while non-significant dose of D-AP7 (0.125 ng/mouse) did not change impairment of memory acquisition induced by harmane (12 mg/kg, i.p.). Conclusion: In addition, all above doses of drugs did not alter locomotor activity. These results suggest that the CA1 NMDA receptors are involved in harmane-induced amnesia.

ABSTRACT

Objective To compare the clinical outcomes of laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) and traditional standard laparoscopy partial nephrectomy surgery, so as to investigate the characteristics, safety, feasibility, advantages and disadvantages of LESS nephrectomy surgery. Methods The same surgical group completed 12 cases of LESS partial nephrectomy from August 2009 to February 2015; 22 cases who received standard laparoendoscopic partial nephrectomy in the same period served as controls; two groups had similar tumor size and DAP scores. The clinical data were retrospectively analyzed to compare the clinical efficacies of the two groups. Results All procedures were completed successfully without conversion to open cases in the two groups. The body mass index, tumor size or DAP scores were not statistically different between the both groups (P>0. 05). The bowel recovery time, pain score, and cutouts satisfaction scores of LESS group were significantly different between the two groups ([1. 50 ± 0. 71] d vs [2. 45±± 0. 96] d, 3. 5 ± 1. 2 vs 4. 3 ± 0. 9, and 8. 1 ± 1. 8 vs 2 ± 2. 1, P0. 05). The renal glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was measured with99mTc-DTPA before and 1 month after the operation, and the GFR of LESS and standard laparoendoscopic groups had a decrease of (3. 7 ± 8. 6) mL/min and (8. 9 ± 10. 1) mL/min, respectively, showing no significant difference (P>0. 05). Conclusion The LESS nephrectomy is safe and effective, which has a similar outcome with standard laparoendoscopic partial nephrectomy when the tumor is small and in a good position.

ABSTRACT

Nasu-Hakola disease (NHD) is a rare autosomal recessive neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by bone cysts, fractures, and cognitive impairment. Two genes are responsible for the development of NHD; TYROBP and TREM2. Although it presents with typical signs and symptoms, diagnosing this disease remains difficult. This case report describes a male with NHD with no family or past history of bone fractures who was diagnosed using exome sequencing. His frontal lobe psychiatric symptoms recovered partially following treatment with sodium valproate, but not with an antipsychotic.

ABSTRACT

Gorgona is a continental island in the Pacific of Colombia. We studied the structure and diversity of its vegetation with 16 Gentry transects (total area 0.16ha) in nine sites on the island. With these data, we calculate Importance Value Index (IVI), distribution of individuals according to their height and diameter at breast height (DBH), cumulative species curves, and species diversity. The vegetation is mainly secondary forest, with remnants of primary forest on the hills. By density, frequency, and coverage, the most important family is Rubiaceae, with 0.275 IVF. The species with the highest IVI (0.157) is Lacistema aggregatum (Lacistemataceae). In height and diameter classes (DBH), individuals have an inverted “J” distribution. The plant community has a Shannon-Wiener diversity index of 3.98. The cumulative species curve of the plant community does not level off even after more than ten transects. Transects were grouped in the similarity analysis but not strongly. There were species richness differences among transects. Rev. Biol. Trop. 62 (Suppl. 1): 13-26. Epub 2014 February 01.

ABSTRACT

An immunohistochemical analysis of 40 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma was performed to evaluate the relationship between the expression pattern of death-associated protein kinase (DAPk) positive cells with the histological malignancy grading of these lesions. According to our results, eleven cases (27.5 percent) were high-grade malignancy tumours and 29 (72.5 percent) were low-grade ones. We found that 92.86 percent of the low-grade tumours were positive to anti-DAP kinase antibody whereas only 7.14 percent of the high-grade tumours presented positivity, and this difference was statistically significant (p<0.01). Sixteen (55.2 percent) of the low-grade carcinomas exhibited moderate immunoreactivity whereas ten cases (34.5 percent) showed weak staining and three cases (10.3 percent) were negative tumours. Immunostaining was lacking in nine (81.8 percent) of the high-grade carcinomas and "weak" in the two (18.2 percent) remaining cases. Thus, DAPk expression is significantly decreased in high-grade oral carcinomas, and evidences indicate that it might be related to the severity of cytological atypia.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Promoter methylation of tumor suppressor genes is one of the key epigenetic changes in many human cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the promoter methylation status of the Death-associated protein(DAP) kinase gene, which played an important role in lung cancer, in the serum DNA of primary lung cancer patients. METHODS: This study investigated the aberrant methylation of DAP kinase in the serum of 65 primary lung cancer patients by methylation-specific PCR (MSP). RESULTS: Methylation in the serum was detected in 29 of 65(44.6%) for DAP kinase. There was no statistical association between methylation of DAP kinase and age, smoking history, histologic type, or stage. Methylation of DAP kinase was found more frequently in men (p=0.044). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that the aberrant methylation of the DAP kinase promoter is readily detectable in the serum DNA of lung cancer patients using MSP analysis.

ABSTRACT

This research presents a method for determination of the maximum diameter of cut in tropical forests being used the denominated graphic construction of "Uplot-Dap". The main objective consisted on detecting the existence and location of a possible maximum diameter in function of the biological balance of the species in a climax forest. To test the graphic method they were used 28320 DBH (cm) outside bark coming from 15 blocks of 96 hectares is of the National Forest of Tapajós, Belterra, Pará, Brazil. The method that uses technique of visual analysis of data as a way of interpretation of the dispersion of the diameters, was shown quite flexible and essentially practical. The graphs were built considering a width of diameter class of 10 cm adopted as reference value. Through this method it was possible to fasten the DBH=95 cm as an indicator of the maximum diameter of exploitability to be adopted in the 1st intervention as reference value in the cut operations for this forest type. Mean while this point can vary from forest to forest and its clearness depends on the forest type and its structural condition. The largest contribution of the graphic method consisted on respecting the properties of the diameter classes in natural forests that for biological reasons or sucessional estate, express its diameter distribution as a function of rare, null or probabilistics events. The efficiency of the method bases on its capacity of controlling the variation of the data so that the analysis are more consistent with the physical and biological factors that characterize the dynamics of natural forests.

ABSTRACT

Rats with adjuvant arthritis (AA rats) show obvious inhibition of the local inflammation when steroids (DXM) are administered. But the contraction of thymic or adrenal atrophy, spleen hypertrophy, and reduction of activity of serum dipeptidyl aminopeptidase IV are recognized. In rats where Sokei-kakketsu-to or Yokuinin-to was administered, prominent anti-inflammatory effects like dexamethasone were not found; however the contraction of thymic or adrenal atrophy, spleen hypertrophy, and reduction of activity of serum dipeptidyl aminopeptidase IV was not recognized. In addition, after withdrawal of drugs, rebound in regional joints did not occurr as with steroids, and the reducing effect for arthrocele was prolonged. Therefore, it was concluded that those two formulations have an effect on the immune system —with anti-inflammatory effects for AA rats— and these action mechanisms are different from that of steroids (DXM).

ABSTRACT

A crop density trail was carried out at the Cerrado Experiment Station, Embrapa Amapá, Amapá, Brazil, to evaluate the effects of density on biomass yield of taxi-branco (Sclerolobium paniculatum Vogel). The trial tested seven spacings (2 x 1 m - 5000 trees/ha, 1.5 x 1.5 m - 4444 t/ha, 3 x 1 m - 3333 t/ha, 2 x 2 m - 2500 t/ha, 3 x 2 m - 1666 t/ha, 3 x 2.5 m - 1333 t/ha) in a randomized block design with four replications; growth and yield were measured in the seventh year. Height, diameter (DBH), survival and stem number showed no differences among treatments. There were two groups of treatments that differed in terms of biomass: the lowest yield was found at 3 x 2 m, while the highest yields were 1.355 t at 2 x 1 m, 1.351 t at 1.5 x 1.5 m, and 1.091 t at 3 x 1 m, so that there was good agreement between density and yield. Overall the best spacing for the Amapá cerrado conditions were 3 x 1 m, which uses fewer plants, has a lower cost, and yields similar to the higher density treatments.
