ABSTRACT

Abstract Objectives: To evaluate the oral health, the use of dental services and associated factors among individuals aged 60 years, or more, living in the rural area. Method: This is a population-based, cross-sectional study carried out in the rural area of a medium-sized municipality in the extreme south of Brazil. The outcome was to have used dental services in the 12 months before the date of the interview. The analysis included a description of the sample, prevalence of the use of dental services for each category of independent variables and multivariate analysis through Poisson Regression. Results: In total, 1,030 older adults were interviewed, of which 49.9% were totally edentulous patients, and 13.9% had dental visits in the last year. The probability of visits was higher in females, with a partner, higher schooling, of the highest economic levels and that reported some oral health problem. On the other hand, elderly who reported being former smokers or were current smokers had fewer visits. Conclusions: Health planning should be reorganized to prioritize population groups with more significant difficulties in the use of dental services.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The social representations resulting from the way of perceiving, interpreting and signifying social reality from the common sense, generate behaviors that directly influence the practice and application of dental care, under the influence of the current socioeconomic conditions of the country. Poverty levels increase rapidly, creating greater social inequalities, with a distribution of polarized economic benefi ts with a concentration of higher incomes in a few. With this, health- dental disease is determined by income levels, limiting access to health levels for the most disadvantaged social groups. The objective of this study is to know the social representations of health-dental disease and its relationship with care and access to dental services and the type of care that people with dental conditions access, and the characteristics of the dentistry practice of those who care for them. A qualitative study was carried out with professionals and patients from the private sector in an area of Mexico City. The results show characteristics of conception and practice infl uenced by the hegemonic medical model and decontextualization of the problems of dental care patients. It is concluded that the social representations of professionals and patients are built in the context of life where polarization and social exclusion prevail.

ABSTRACT

@#Patient satisfaction can be used as one of the indicator for measuring quality of dental care provided. The objective of this study was to assess patient experiences with dental service provided by undergraduate dental students in Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya. A cross sectional study was done by distributing a self-answered questionnaire to patients treated by undergraduate dental students. Patient level of satisfaction was assessed by using five point Likert-like scale (strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree and strongly agree), with a list of items divided into three domains, consist of interpersonal skills, dental treatment and services. The response rate was 71.3%. The mean satisfaction scores were 83.09%, 78.62 and 74.16 for interpersonal skills, dental treatment and services domains respectively and the overall mean satisfaction score was highly satisfactory (78.62%). The percentage of satisfied patients was 82.4%, 66.2% and 55.4% for interpersonal skills, dental treatment and services domains respectively. There was significant association between satisfaction score with age (p-value=<0.001), treatment received by examination and diagnosis (p-value=0.027), denture treatment (p-value=0.032), others treatment (p-value=0.043) and ‘year of study’ of the students (p-value=0.001). Patients were satisfied with their overall experiences while receiving dental care provided by undergraduate dental students. They were highly satisfied with the students’ interpersonal skills, dental treatment received and services provided at the undergraduate dental clinics.

ABSTRACT

It has been reported that children's oral health conditions are correlated with their attendance to dental health services. Evaluating the influencing factors of utilization of dental services for children may give ways to improve the services per se, and furtherly the children's oral health. The present review retrieved and summarized domestic and foreign studies on the utilization of oral health services for children based on the Andersen behavior model. It was concluded that the utilization of dental services for children was affected by demographic characteristics, social structure, health belief, family factors, community factors and perceived/evaluated needs. To improve the utilization of dental services for children, effort should be made by means of changing caregivers' health belief, developing oral health insurance system, setting up regular oral health resources and increasing the financial support for oral health services by government.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cuba has a unique way of organizing health services within them; dental services are perhaps one of the most exquisite pieces of the broad array of benefits to which the Cuban population has access. In the Latin American context there is no reference of a public dental care system with universal coverage, which has developed a set of integrated and comprehensive benefits such as Cuba. From these statements, the following questions arise: Does the Cuban network of dental services with the attributes of integration proposed by international organizations? What time is network integration? What are the challenges for the future? Development: the practical challenge of achieving the objectives of the National Program of Comprehensive Care for the Population Stomatology has an integrated health service delivery. Its reserves of improvement system can be identified as a set of attributes related to: integration linking with basic equipment health clinic; the participation of the family, community and intersectoral management of health problems, among others. The Cuban model integrates all the functions inherent to health systems: service delivery, stewardship and management, financing, and coordination. Conclusions: Cuban network of dental services incorporated in its design and implementation attributes of integration proposed by the Pan American Health Organization. No scientifically supported information is available on the level of integration the Cuban network of dental services reaches, nor the impact of the phenomena of integration/fragmentation of the services provided. It poses as a challenge for the future, to conduct a research that demonstrates the impact of the phenomena of integration/fragmentation in stomatology services network(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify the status of dental care utilization among mothers and children from multicultural families and analyzing the related factors. METHODS: The subjects in this study were 131 mothers from multicultural families and 175 mothers from Korean (control) families who were selected by convenience sampling from the city of Nonsan. The dental care utilization among mothers and children from multicultural families and mothers and children from Korean families were compared. A questionnaire survey was conducted using the self-administration method for mothers from Korean families and by a face-to-face interviewing method for mothers from multicultural families. RESULTS: The proportion of subjects who visited the dentist's office in the past year was not different between the two groups of mothers. However, this proportion was lower in children from multicultural families than those from Korean families. The factors that influenced the visit to dental clinics were age and spouse's age among multicultural mothers and age, spouse's age, personal perceptions about oral health, and oral health concerns among Korean mothers. The factors that influenced dental clinic visits were mother's career, household income, education level of the mother, children's age, mother's dental clinic visits, mother's perception of children's oral health among multicultural children and father's age, marriage duration of parents, children's age, mother's dental clinical visit, and the mother's concerns about children's oral health among Korean children. CONCLUSIONS: Multicultural children visit the dental clinic a lot less than Korean children. Social economic factors such as household income, education level affect the use of dental clinic services by multicultural families.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Access to health services, including those for oral health, depends upon socioeconomic, environmental and individual factors. Moreover, cultural and lifestyle differences also influence the degree to which services are sought. Objective: This study aimed to assess factors associated with the use of dental services among adolescents in the 7th grade of public primary schools from the city of Gravataí, RS, Brazil, in 2005. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out. Data were collected in schools through self-administered questionnaires evaluating demographic, socioeconomic and psychosocial factors, lifestyle, oral health habits and behaviors of 1,170 adolescents, using the Global School-Based Student Health Survey, International Physical Activity Questionnaire and Body Shape Questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out by means of Cox regression modified for cross-sectional studies, using the STATA 6.0 software. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed from a hierarchical conceptual model supported by the literature on hierarchical models. Results: The use of dental services was less frequent among those who reported concern with body image and involvement in fights; those whose parents did not know where they were in their leisure time, those who brushed their teeth less than twice a day, those who did not use dental floss daily, those who reported seeking dental services for curative treatment and those with a lower socioeconomic status. Conclusions: The results suggest that the use of dental services by adolescents depends upon the interaction of psychosocial and individual factors as well as the family context. .
