ABSTRACT

The article presents an original method for the automatic assessment of the quality of event-related potentials (ERPs), based on the calculation of the coefficient ε, which describes the compliance of recorded ERPs with some statistically significant parameters. This method was used to analyze the neuropsychological EEG monitoring of patients suffering from migraines. The frequency of migraine attacks was correlated with the spatial distribution of the coefficients ε, calculated for EEG channels. More than 15 migraine attacks per month was accompanied by an increase in calculated values in the occipital region. Patients with infrequent migraines exhibited maximum quality in the frontal areas. The automatic analysis of spatial maps of the coefficient ε demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the two analyzed groups with different means of migraine attack numbers per month.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the difference of perceptual processing in ERP between cartoon faces and real faces. Methods:Thirty college students were selected and adopted the face recognition paradigm. The independent variables were face type (real, cartoon) and emotional type (positive, neutral, negative). The dependent variables were response time and the amplitude and latency of ERP data.SPSS 22.0 software was used for repeated measurement analysis of variance. Results:The reaction time of cartoon expression ((455.58±55.18)ms) was shorter than that of real face ((471.49±63.02)ms) of college students. There was no significant difference in N170 amplitude and latency among different faces and expressions(all P>0.05). The vertex positive potential VPP latency of positive real faces ((159.89±13.93)ms) was shorter than that of positive cartoon faces ((165.68±14.35)ms) ( PVPP<0.05). It was easily affected by perceptual load, but negative emotion was not affected by it.In the late processing stage of late positive potential(LPP), the amplitude of positive emotional real face ((10.4±1.22)μV) was higher than that of cartoon ((4.26±0.53)μV), and that of negative emotional cartoon face ((3.84±0.36)μV) was higher than that of real face ((1.9±0.24)μV) ( PLPP<0.05). Conclusion:There are no differences in early stage N170, and the late processing stage, the real faces have an overall advantageous effect on positive emotion, and the local characteristics of negative emotional cartridge wells are more superior.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction Tinnitus is sound perception in the absence of a sound source. Changes in parameters of latency and amplitude on the auditory event related potentials or long latency potentials waves have been cited in tinnitus patients when compared to a control group. Objective To perform an assessment of scientific evidence that verifies the possibility of alterations in latency or amplitude of the waves of event related potentials in individuals with tinnitus. Methods By using SciELO, Lilacs, ISI Web and PubMed, scientific databases, a review was performed. Articles published in English, Portuguese, French and Spanish that correlated tinnitus with changes in event related potentials were included in this review. Results Twelve articles were located, however only eight fulfilled the criteria for inclusion. Conclusion The sample of selected studies demonstrate that the long latency auditory evoked potentials related to events between the control and tinnitus patients showed some changes in latency and or amplitude in tinnitus patients. There are changes in event-related potentials when comparing patients with tinnitus and the control group. These changes take place considering the severity of tinnitus, tinnitus site of lesion, and capacity for changes after interventions. The event related potentials can help to determine the neurotransmitter involved in tinnitus generation and evaluate tinnitus treatments.

ABSTRACT

Objective • To explore the differences of event-related potential components (N400 and P600) in response to language processing between schizophrenia (SZ) patients with formal thought disorder (FTD), SZ patients without FTD, genetic high-risk subjects and healthy controls (HC). Methods • Thirty SZ patients with FTD (SZ-FTD group) and 29 SZ patients without FTD (SZ-nFTD group), who were hospitalized in Shanghai Mental Health Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, 22 subjects at genetic high risk who were first degree relatives of SZ patients, and 31 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. Four different types of sentences (syntactically and semantically correct, syntactically correct but semantically incorrect, syntactically incorrect but semantically correct, and syntactically and semantically incorrect) were presented to the four groups respectively with electroencephalogram recording. Repeated measurement analysis of variance was used to compare the response accuracy of the four groups and to analyze the differences in the amplitude and latency of N400 and P600 components in response to each kind of sentence among the four groups. Results • SZFTD group showed a lower accuracy rate compared with the HC group (P=0.000). Compared with the HC group, N400 amplitude in SZ-FTD group was lower in statistically significance (P=0.003), while SZ-FTD group did not show a prominent N400 component. P600 component was well evoked in four groups, and there was an interaction between semantics, syntax and group (P=0.022). By further analysis, neither SZ-FTD nor SZ-nFTD group showed significant differences in P600 amplitudes evoked by syntactically correct and syntactically incorrect sentences. There was no significant difference in P600 amplitudes evoked by semantically correct and incorrect sentences in SZ-FTD group, whereas P600 amplitudes evoked by semantically correct sentences were greater than those evoked by semantically incorrect ones in the other three groups. Conclusion • Neural activity is impaired during semantic processing in SZ. In particular, SZ-FTD patients have impairments in both semantic and syntactic processing.

ABSTRACT

Background: Background: Fast-track programs in liver surgery offer advantages over traditional perioperative management, particularly in terms of reducing length of hospital stay and hospital costs. Material and methods: We conducted an observational and descriptive analysis of patients undergoing open liver resections as part of an enhanced recovery program. Adherence to the program, full recovery of the patients, complications and length of hospital stay were assessed. Results: A total of 32 liver resections were performed in 30 patients, 27 with cancer. The adherence to the program was 78.1% and full recovery on discharge was 75%. The incidence of complications was 12.5%; most of them were not severe but two patients required rehospitalization. Mean length of hospital stay was 3.4 days and 3.6 days when readmissions were considered. Conclusion: The implementation of an ERP after liver resections is feasible and offers advantages in terms of reducing length of hospital stay and hospital costs. We do not think that ERP improves morbidity in these patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective To compare the amplitude and latency of event-related potential P300 be-tween impulsive and predictive violent criminals. Methods Twenty impulsive violent criminals and twenty predictive violent criminals were recruited from one prison in Wenzhou city. Twenty matched healthy controls from community were recruited. Criminals in both groups were excluded from violent crimes caused by mental disorders by judicial psychiatrists using DSM-IV axis I disorder clinical stereotyped interviews. Nicolet Bravo Brain Evoked Potentiometer (produced by Nicolet Company,USA) was used to detect the P300 components of the above three groups of subjects. Eysenck Impulsiveness Scale was used to assess the impulsiveness. Results The P300 amplitude of impulsive violent criminals was smaller than that of predictive violent crimi-nals( (4. 52±1. 14)μV vs (13. 88±2. 06)μV,t=17. 779,P<0. 01),but there was no significant difference of the P300 amplitude between predictive violent criminals and community enrolled controls ((13. 88±2. 06) μV vs (14. 01±1. 86)μV,t=0. 209,P=0. 835). The impulsivity scale score of impulsive violent criminals was highly negatively correlated with the amplitude of P300 (r=-0. 812,P=0. 002). There were no signifi-cant differences in the latency of P300 among impulsive violent criminals, predictive violent criminals and community enrolled controls group. And there was no significant correlation between the latency of P300 and the score of impulsivity scale (P>0. 05). Conclusion The P300 amplitude can aid in the differential diag-nosis of violent criminals with and without impulsive behavior.

ABSTRACT

Aim To investigate the effect of Radices Paeoniae Alba extract on estrogen receptor (3 ( ERp ) and serotonin transporter(SERT) in the hippocampus of rat model of premenstrual syndrome( PMS) liver-qi inverse syndrome. Methods The rats were randomly divided into the normal group, the model group, the Radices Paeoniae Alba extract group, the fluoxetine group and the ER(3 agonist group by the vaginal smear microscopy and the open field score. The model group rats were prepared by electrical stimulation to prepare PMS liver-qi inverse syndrome. After five days of administration, the hippocampal tissues of each group were separated. ERp and SERT mRNA and protein expression in each group were determined by RT-PCR and immunofluorescence histochemical method. Results During the estrous reception period, there was no significant difference in the behavior score of the open- field test and the expression of ERp and SERT mRNA and protein in the hippocampus of each group. Estrous non-reception period; compared with normal rats, the total distance of open field test in model rats increased significantly. The expression of ER(3 mRNA in hippocampus significantly decreased and SERT mRNA significantly increased. In model group, the pyramidal cells in hippocampal CA1 and CA3 brain areas of rats were irregularly arranged, and the number of ERp positive cells and protein expression decreased. The number of SERT positive cells and protein expression were significantly up-regulated. After the Radices Paeoniae Alba extract was given, the above indexes were significantly improved, and no significant difference was found between them and fluoxetine group and ER agitator group. Conclusions Radices Paeoniae Alba extract may adjust the PMS card of diseases with inverse nega-tive emotions possibly by improving the hippocampus ER|3 and SERT mRNA and protein expression.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the semantic priming of boy with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder( ADHD) and explore whether the semantic priming deficits was associated with behavioral problems by event-related potential(ERP). Methods Thirty boy with and without ADHD aged from 7 to 13 years were asked to finish the semantic Semantic judgment task. The study took advantage of t-test ( independent-samples) to compare the amplitude and latency of the N400 in both groups,as well as behavioral data.Behav-ioral problems were assessed by the Achenbach child behavior checklist( CBCL) ,and Pearson correlation a-nalysis were used to explore the relationship between behavioral problems and semantic priming. Result-s Under the condition of semantic correlation, the hyperactive factor of CBCL in ADHA group was positively correlated with ERP N400 amplitude ( r=0.44,P<0.05) and negatively correlated with reaction accuracy ( r=-0.48,P<0.05).Under the semantic irrelevant condition, the latency of ERP N400 in ADHA group was pos-itively correlated with hyperactivity factor (r=0.53,P<0.05)and aggression factor of CBCL(r=0.62,P<0.05).The N400 amplitude of the ADHD group was significant higher than that in the control group under se-mantic related conditions((-11.36±4.77)μV vs (-7.66±5.24)μV,P=0.006),and the latency of the N400 in ADHD was more delay((369.6±44.09)ms vs (341.27±24.54)ms,P=0.004),and the reaction times (RT) was much longer((936.18±135.03)ms vs (857.78±103.45)ms,P=0.014).The latency of the N400 in ADHD was more delay than that in the control group under semantic irrelevant conditions ( ( 383. 93 ±29.66)ms vs (362.33±29.66)ms,P=0.012),and accuracies of ADHD group was lower than that of control group(0.43±0.39 vs 0.81±0.23,P<0.01).Conclusion The present result indicates that children with ADHD exhibit a deficit in the semantic priming mechanism, and the deficit is positively correlated with hy-peractivity and impulsiveness.

ABSTRACT

Objective Rats were fed with high-fat diet and were successfully induced the models with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and to investigate the effects of liraglutide on the expression of ERp46.Methods Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to normal chow group(NC,n=10)and high-fat diet group(n=20),after 12 weeks, the high-fat diet group rats were divided into high-fat diet group(HF,n=10)and liraglutide group(100L,n=10) and treated with normal saline and liraglutide(100 μg/kg)for 4 weeks respectively. Liver tissues were measured by hematoxylin-eosin(HE),Oil Red O staining, hepatic triglyceride(TG),and hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp test(HECT). Hepatocyte apoptosis rate were evaluated by TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling(TUNEL),and the expressions of ERp46 mRNA and protein were measured. Results Compared with the NC group, the liver tissues in the HF group have steatosis, insulin resistance, and the percentage of apoptosis was significantly increased. ERp46 mRNA and protein expressions were decreased(P<0.05). Compared with the HF group, liraglutide treatment was sufficient to reduce steatosis, insulin resistance, apoptosis, and increase the ERp46 mRNA and protein(P<0.05). Furthermore, the expression of ERp46 protein in the liver was negatively correlated with hepatocyte apoptosis rate, and positive correlated with glucose infusion rate(GIR, P<0. 05). Conclusion Liraglutide may up-regulate the expression of ERp46 to improve IR and hepatocyte apoptosis in NAFLD rats.

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to explore the immediate effect mechanism of the middle 2/5 of the vertex-temporal anterior oblique line in the treatment of stroke by scalp acupuncture using event-related brain potential (ERP).A total of 30 stroke cases who met the inclusion criteria and 25 healthy subjects were selected.Patients in both groups were treated by scalp acupuncture, with stimulation on the middle 2/5 of the vertex-temporal anterior oblique line on the right side.ERP was detected before acupuncture and 10 min after acupuncture in both groups. The muscle strength and neurological deficit score of the stroke group were also detected. At the end of the experiment, the movement-related cortical potentials (MRCPs) of both the left and right hand were extracted from the ERP.The results showed that after 10 min scalp acupuncture stimulation, the neurological deficit score of the stroke group was lower than that of the pretreatment (P < 0.05);the muscle strength rating was higher than before (P < 0.05).Before and after acupuncture, the amplitude of MRCPs on the diseased side of the stroke group was significantly decreased compared to before (P < 0.05).It was concluded that the immediate effect of scalp acupuncture treatment of hemiplegia patients with stroke was definite. Its mechanism may be that acupuncture stimulates the motor cortex through the vertex-temporal anterior oblique line, reduces the energy loss of brain motion planning, activates the damaged brain movement related area cortex neurons, improves the processing efficiency of movement in the brain,so as to promote the improvement of hemiplegic limb motor function immediately. And we also observed that the healthy side brain has a compensatory effect, which suggested that in our clinical scalp acupuncture, bilateral stimulation may be more effective.

ABSTRACT

The complex multidimensional visual patterns of facial expression is particularly well sui ted for studying perception and the processes underlying perceptual integration of component parts into a meaningful whole. With the high resolution in milliseconds,event-related potential (ERP) may be an excellent technique to track the time course of cognitive processing for facial emotions.Facial affective stimuli elicit particular ERP components involved in early processing of facial expressions, including:early sensory processing of visual stimuli:the P100;early structural encoding of facial features:the N170;second-order sustained activities necessary for consequent deeper processing:the posterior P2 and decoding of facial features to identify emotional content:the N250.We reviewed above mentioned ERP components respectively,in order to add the knowledge about ERP components as indicators of neural dynamics of facial emotion processing, and to provide a point of reference for further exploration on facial emotion processing that may be useful for understanding human cognition development and pathology.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study is to measure the auditory Event Related Potentials in Filipino patients with schizophrenia, their siblings and comparing them with normal controls. Specifically the P300 amplitude and latency measurements of schizophrenic patients would also be correlated to sociodemographic variables such as age, duration of illness and positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia.METHODOLOGY: Patients with schizophrenia after consenting to participate in the study were screened using the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale. The auditory event related potentials (ERP) of the parietal electrode of these patients and their siblings as well as a control group of healthy individuals from the community were measured and compared.RESULTS: Comparison of P300 parameters among 20 patients with schizophrenia, 20 siblings and 20 controls using ANOVA showed that the P300 amplitude of schizophrenic patients was markedly reduced compared with the other 2 groups. P300 latency values were markedly prolonged in both schizophrenia and their siblings when compared to the control group. Analysis of the data revealed that P300 latency had a positive correlation with the duration of positive and negative symptoms. There was also an inverse correlation with positive symptomatology.CONCLUSION: There was a decreased P300 amplitude and prolonged P300 latency in Filipino Schizophrenic patients. P300 parameters in schizophrenic patients were correlated to age, duration of symptoms and positive and negative symptoms.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Memory impairment is a very important mental health issue for elderly and adults. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Early detection of the prodromal stage of patients with AD is an important topic of interest for both mental health clinicians and policy makers. METHODS: Electroencephalograpgy (EEG) has been used as a possible biological marker for patients with MCI, and AD. In this review, we will summarize the clinical implications of EEG and ERP as a biological marker for AD and MCI. RESULTS: EEG power density, functional coupling, spectral coherence, synchronization, and connectivity were analyzed and proved their clinical efficacy in patients with the prodromal stage of AD. Serial studies on late event-related potentials (ERPs) were also conducted in MCI patients as well as healthy elders. Even though these EEG and ERP studies have some limitations for their design and method, their clinical implications are increasing rapidly. CONCLUSION: EEG and ERP can be used as biological markers of AD and MCI. Also they can be used as useful tools for early detection of AD and MCI patients. They are useful and sensitive research tools for AD and MCI patients. However, some problems remain to be solved until they can be practical measures in clinical setting.
