ABSTRACT

Objectives@#While food product labelling is deemed important in providing consumer information, little is known about the characteristics of those reading and not reading. This study aimed to determine the socio-demographic characteristics of Filipino adult consumers reading and not reading food product labels and nutrition facts to provide insights on their understanding and usage of food labels that may help in designing better label formats of packaged foods and related health education campaigns.@*Methods@#Cross-sectional design using secondary data from the Expanded National Nutrition Survey (ENNS) 2018- 2019 was employed. A survey form on Reading Food Product Labels and Nutrition Facts in the ENNS 2018-2019 were collected through face-to-face interviews. Descriptive statistics, test of proportions, and logistic regression were done using Stata version 16.@*Results@#Always reading product labels were reported only by 19.6% of adult consumers, 18 years old and above, while 45.9% reported not reading food product labels. Among those who read food product labels, only 16.7% reported reading nutrition facts. Higher proportions of adults reading nutrition facts were found among those who attained a higher educational level, were less than 40 years old, living in urban residences, and belonging to higher wealth status. ‘Not interested’ was the top reason of adults who reported not reading nutrition facts.@*Conclusion@#Reading product labels and nutrition facts is not common among Filipino adults. Being not interested was the top reason for not reading food product labels. Older persons, adults with low educational attainment, and belonging to poor households were more likely to not read food product labels and not influenced by nutrition facts which imply the need for a food label format that would cater to those who cannot or have difficulty reading food labels and nutrition facts. An intensified campaign on the importance of reading food product labels is also needed.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases constitute the first death cause worldwide, reason why the identification and modification of associated risk factors constitute prioritized strategies by the World Health Organization. To have a prediction model of cardiovascular risk enriched with the evaluation of the endothelial dysfunction would influence positively in these goals. Objectives: To identify the presence of endothelial dysfunction in patients with or without cardiovascular diseases and to determine the association between them. Methods: An observational and descriptive cases series study was carried out in the Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery Center at Saturnino Lora Teaching Clinical Surgical Provincial Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, from January, 2022 to the same month, 2023, where the traditional cardiovascular risk factors and endothelial dysfunction biomarkers were analyzed as variables. Secondarily, an analytic case-control study was carried out in which multivariate binary logistic regression was applied. Results: The presence of endothelial dysfunction associated with the onset of cardiovascular diseases was confirmed, what was evaluated through the vasodilatation index, mediated by the brachial artery flow and the fibrinogen plasmatic concentrations. Conclusions: The clinical and epidemiological pattern of patients with or without cardiovascular diseases did not differ from that reported in the specialized literature on the base of the identification of traditional risk factors.

ABSTRACT

Social representations around the historical facts of the armed conflict are marked by a cognitive and mnemic bias, accompanied by forgetfulness and silences, and by processes of attribution of responsibility in which the guerrillas, especially the FARC-EP, are assumed as the main responsible and absolute enemy. This makes the responsibility of the other stakeholders (paramilitaries, security forces, and the State) invisible, by generating a convenient and induced oblivion, which is functional to the interests of certain social sectors that hold political, economic, and media power, which promote impunity and contribute to the maintenance of political violence in order to maintain their power. These hegemonic memory processes constitute a psychosocial barrier to the construction of peace, democracy, and reconciliation in Colombia.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objectives. To estimate the number of processed and ultra-processed beverages and foods that provide nutritional information on their packaging, and to describe the characteristics of this information, as well as to determine the presence of nutritional information on products with octagons. Materials and methods. Photographs were taken of the labels of 4404 processed and ultra-processed beverages and foods marketed in supermarkets in Metropolitan Lima. The information on the label was collected and registered in the mobile and web version of the Food Label Information Program (FLIP). We analyzed variables related to the nutritional information, the way in which such information is declared and the information in beverages and foods with octagons. Results. Only 71.4% of the products had some type of nutritional information. Of these, 13.8% provided the nutritional information as a text and not in a table, and only 56.3% declared it per 100 grams or milliliters. Of the total number of foods with the octagon "Contains trans fats", only 19.2% declared their content. Conclusions. More than a quarter of the beverages and packaged foods in the Peruvian market did not provide nutritional information of any kind, and of those that did, only one did so in different formats and units. In addition, we found that a proportion of beverages and foods for each type of octagon did not declare information of the nutrient that is mentioned in the octagon.

ABSTRACT

Evidence-based dentistry is a strategy that seeks to ensure that the daily clinical decisions made by the dental professional are based on scientific evidence. It integrates the clinical experience of the dentist, the needs and preferences of the patient, and the most current relevant clinical evidence. All three are part of the decision-making process for patient care. Evidence-based dentistry arises from the successful experiences obtained with the development and implementation of evidence-based medicine, applying the scientific method in the evaluation, planning and decision-making of health benefits, especially through controlled studies. In general, all dental practice has had great advances based on evidence, with proven true facts, but the fundamental concepts of occlusion have not had an improvement based on scientific knowledge, proof of this is that theories and concepts continue to be used. of the philosophies of occlusion in patient rehabilitation, we follow myths and sophisms that have not been demonstrated, in this review, we demonstrate the great advances in the concepts of occlusion and we know all dentists to break the paradigms of the old occlusion without scientific evidence (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Questions about the safety of food additives and their consumption have been raised in recent years. The increased exposure to these substances, either by intake of ultra-processed foods or by the broad use and combination of various categories of additives, may be related to higher risks to consumer health. This article comments on the results of a study that quantified and characterized food additives found on the labels of 9,856 packaged foods and beverages available in Brazilian supermarkets. The study adopted a field diary method to record and analyze nonconformities in the lists of ingredients. The objective of this article is to discuss the use of additives identified on the labels and the limitations of Brazilian legislation, which should guarantee the right to information and health.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

The aim of this study is to evaluate the cost and nutritional information of the labels of diet sweet and conventional sweet according to current legislation. It is an exploratory descriptive study evaluating 22 labels of diet sweets and 22 labels of their conventional correspondents, in supermarkets of Barbacena, Minas Gerais. It was verified the compliance of the data obtained on the labels with the RDC resolutions No.360/2003; No.359/2003; No. 259/2002, Ordinance No. 29/1998 and Federal Law No.10 674/2003. In relation to RDC No.360/2003 and No.259/2002, the evaluated products did not show irregularities. However, according to RDC No.359/2003, it was observed that 9% of diet sweets and 9% of conventional sweets were irregular and, according to Ordinance No. 29/1998, there were 4.5% irregularities in the diet sweets. The irregularities found by this study highlight the need for a greater control by the competent bodies since the lack of information can interfere with the health of consumers, especially the public with specific needs. The absence of conformities may be related to the misinterpretation of society during the choice and purchase of food. (AU)

ABSTRACT

(AU)

Milk is an important source of high biological value proteins, vitamins and minerals, however, allergy or ntolerance issues, and a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, have led its replacement by vegetables-based beverages. To evaluate weather this substitution is relevant; this study compared the labels of animal origin milk and the vegetable beverage available in the main supermarkets of Greater Vitória, ES. Fifty-six packages of cow and goat UHT milks, in their diferent versions, and 41 packages of vegetable beverages of peanuts, almonds, rice, oats, nuts, coconut, spelt, walnuts and soybeans were evaluated. The vegetable beverages presented, in general, the presence of fibers, higher content of unsaturated fatty acids and lower sodium content. Milks stood out due to the presence of cholesterol, higher protein intake, calcium and vitamins and D.Vegetable beverages also presented higher amount of carbohydrates and higher caloric value. Therefore, if there is no restriction, whether for health, culture or habit reasons, it is not equivalent to replace milks vegetable beverages. However, the consumption of whole milk should be balanced due to its high content of saturated fats and sodium. ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: A front-of-package nutrition label is a tool to help guide food selection towards a balanced and healthy diet. Objective: To understand the model of front-of-package nutrition label that most influences the understanding of calories and important nutrients in processed food products in adult participants in Lima, Peru. Materials and Methods: A quasi-experimental cross-sectional study with 384 participant adults of both sexes. Participants were distributed into four equal groups: no nutritional labeling; daily food guide; stop sign warning labeling; and daily food guide with a traffic light symbol. Each participant was given a questionnaire with 10 pictures of food packaging with the labeling model that corresponded to their randomized group, along with 10 additional questions, for a total of 20 possible questionnaire points. Points were given for correct answers to the 20 questions on the questionnaire, such as identifying correctly the number of calories and/or critical nutrients. Results: The highest total scores were for the daily food guide-traffic light group (12.1 ± 3.9) and daily food guide group (12.1 ± 3.7), with significant differences with respect to the other two groups. There were also differences in the scores of the identification of calories, saturated fat, and total fat; the highest values were for the same two groups indicated above (p <0.05). No differences in food labels were found for the identification of sugars or sodium. Conclusions: The daily food guide and daily food guide-traffic light models most influence the identification of calories and critical nutrients.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

Food labelling is important to communication between food producers and consumers. For consumers to have greater autonomy in terms of their food choices, it is important to facilitate a correct interpretation about what is on a food label. This paper assessed consumers' knowledge and use of nutritional information on food labels. Cross-sectional exploratory quantitative, "blind" research carried out in 2018 in a public university in Brazil, with 415 consumers aged 18 years or older. A structured questionnaire with a score ranging from 0 to 24 was applied. Descriptive analysis, Spearman correlation coefficient, the Kruskal-Wallis test and the Mann Whitney test were employed. Participants were individuals aged 21.02 ± 2.89 years, of which 58.31% were female. Many consumers reported they read food labels frequently (56.39%). The mean score was 14.99 ± 4.12. The knowledge score mean was affected by age (p =0.039) and income (p = 0.020). Participants who used nutritional claims as a criterion for purchase (p = 0.004) had higher scores. The biggest issues in interpreting nutritional labels were related to mandatory nutrient claims and the terms "trans-fat free (0%)", "functional food", "diet" and "light". Food label regulation is a process currently under review in Brazil, so research on the use and knowledge of nutritional information on food labels by young adult consumers becomes important. It will contribute to the discussion of the revision of legislation, as well as helping professionals guide consumers in the interpretation of labels. (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective. To identify the food industry's arguments against front-of-package nutrition labels in Uruguay. Methods. Content analysis and inductive coding were applied to the comments made by the food industry during the public consultation on the draft decree regulating the inclusion of front-of-package nutrition labels (warnings) in Uruguay. Results. Most of the comments expressed concern about the high prevalence of obesity and noncommunicable diseases in the country and emphasized a commitment to implementing actions to help combat these health problems. However, 81% of the comments disagreed with the draft decree presented for public consultation; these included general criticisms of its validity. The content of the comments related to seven areas: lack of rationale for the measure; violation of international commitments; criticisms of the warning system; discrimination against industrialized packaged food; criticisms of the nutrient profile model; other criticisms of aspects specific to the draft decree; and adverse economic effects. For each area, there is discussion of the technical and normative relevance and consistency of the content presented by the industry representatives. Conclusions. Despite apparent agreement about the need to adopt measures, it is clear that the food industry is strongly opposed to the policy and, in particular, to the warning system. The results of this analysis may help to facilitate the process of implementing similar regulations in other countries.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective This investigation evaluated the use of food labels and consumers' perception of the reliability of food labels nutritional information. Methods This is a transversal exploratory quantitative investigation, carried out in Curitiba, Brazil. A total of 536 students from a public institution participated in the survey answering a structured questionnaire. Descriptive analyses, Chi-Square test and Fisher's exact test were performed considering a significance level of 5%. Results The participants' mean age was 21.11±2.83 years, and 59.3% were female. It was noticed that 41.6% of consumers used the nutritional information sometimes and 14.7% always, mainly because they liked to know what they were buying and consuming (35.8%). Lack of patience (29.5%) and concern about the composition of the food purchased (34.2%) were the main reasons for not using the information provided. The most commonly used nutrition claim was "trans fat-free" (42.5%) and the type of food in which nutrition labeling was used most was milk and dairy products (42.0%). Frequent use of nutritional information was higher among women (p<0.01) and among those who practice physical activity (p=0.04). Many individuals relied on food labels nutritional information (61.9%), but out of these, 43.6% did not use that information at the time of purchase. There was no difference between respondents' confidence in the information, sociodemographic and health data. Conclusion Many people still do not use the label nutrition information. Efforts should be made to change this scenario. Changes in nutrition labeling can help modify this situation, with the use of clearer label information, more easily understood, that does not raise any doubts in the consumers' mind.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the correlations between the systemic immune inflammatory index (SII) and prognosis of patients with gallbladder cancer.@*Methods@#From April 2005 to January 2019, patients with gallbladder cancer underwent surgical treatment in the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Affiliated Tumor Hospital of Zhengzhou University were followed up and their SII values were analyzed. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to determine the best clinical boundary value of SII. According to the boundary value, patients were divided into two groups: low SII and high SII. Survival curves were drawn by Kaplan-Meier method. The overall survival time of the two groups was analyzed, and univariate analysis of postoperative survival was performed using log-rank test. Cox regression proportional hazard model was used for multivariate analysis of clinical prognosis.@*Results@#A total of 312 patients were included, including 120 males and 192 females, aged 30.0 to 86.0 (61.5±9.9) years. The best clinical cut off value of preoperative SII was determined by ROC curve to be 510.42. A total of 312 patients with gallbladder cancer were divided into low SII group (SII≤510.42) and high SII group (SII>510.42). Kaplan-Meier survival curve was used to analyze the 1, 3 and 5-year survival rates of gallbladder cancer patients in low SII group and high SII group after operation. The survival rates were 65.7%, 39.6% and 30.2%, and 27.9%, 12.0% and 9.6% respectively. The median survival time was 25 months (95% CI: 16.9-33.1) and 9 months (95% CI: 8.1-9.9), respectively. The survival rate of gallbladder cancer patients in low SII group was better. There were significant differences of the overall survival rate between the two groups (P<0.05). Univariate analysis showed that SII>510.42 (HR=0.086, 95% CI: 0.032-0.289) was a risk factor for overall survival of gallbladder cancer patients. Cox multivariate analysis confirmed that preoperative SII (HR=2.649, 95% CI: 1.981-3.543) was an independent risk factor for overall survival of gallbladder cancer patients.@*Conclusions@#SII can be used as an independent prognostic factor to predict the prognosis of patients with gallbladder cancer. The higher the preoperative SII, the worse the prognosis of patients with gallbladder cancer.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Brazilian legislation provides regulations for the marketing of supplements for athletes. In this context one of the most widely used supplements for athletes are the carbohydrate-rich ones, which are excellent sources of energy for exercise. Objective: To evaluate the adequacy of the labeling of supplements based on carbohydrates marketed in Brasília, Federal District, Brazil according to the current legislation. Methods: The labels of products marketed in drugstores and nutritional supplement stores were evaluated in the region of the Plano Piloto de Brasília. The information evaluated on the labels were intended use of the product, specific composition, presence of mandatory phrase and absence of prohibited images and expressions according to the Resolution of the Collegiate Board of Directors number 18/2010 of the National Agency of Sanitary Surveillance (ANVISA). Results: Sixty national and imported products were cataloged. It was observed that 75% of the sample products had some item that failed to comply with the regulation. The presence of the mandatory statement in bold and highlighted was the item with the highest percentage of inadequacy (73.3%). In addition, there have been cases where the mandatory statement is worded with opposite meaning. All supplements have complied with the legislation regarding the minimum carbohydrate content relative to the total energy value of the product and the minimum amount of carbohydrate per serving. Conclusions: Considering that 75% carbohydrate-based supplements were inadequate for labeling and that the most frequent mismatch was the absence or incorrect wording of the mandatory statement on the labels of supplements, it is concluded that this type of irregularity serves the interests of industry and not necessarily the interests of the consumer. The presence of the mandatory statement in the product is an easily enforceable requirement, therefore, it is emphasized a more efficient inspection of the energy supplements marketed. Level of Evidence III; Economic and decision analyses - Developing an economic or decision model.
