ABSTRACT

Chemotherapy is one of the major approaches for the treatment of metastatic lung cancer, although it is limited by the low tumor delivery efficacy of anticancer drugs. Bacterial therapy is emerging for cancer treatment due to its high immune stimulation effect; however, excessively generated immunogenicity will cause serious inflammatory response syndrome. Here, we prepared cancer cell membrane-coated liposomal paclitaxel-loaded bacterial ghosts (LP@BG@CCM) by layer-by-layer encapsulation for the treatment of metastatic lung cancer. The preparation processes were simple, only involving film formation, electroporation, and pore extrusion. LP@BG@CCM owned much higher 4T1 cancer cell toxicity than LP@BG due to its faster fusion with cancer cells. In the 4T1 breast cancer metastatic lung cancer mouse models, the remarkably higher lung targeting of intravenously injected LP@BG@CCM was observed with the almost normalized lung appearance, the reduced lung weight, the clear lung tissue structure, and the enhanced cancer cell apoptosis compared to its precursors. Moreover, several major immune factors were improved after administration of LP@BG@CCM, including the CD4+/CD8a+ T cells in the spleen and the TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-4 in the lung. LP@BG@CCM exhibits the optimal synergistic chemo-immunotherapy, which is a promising medication for the treatment of metastatic lung cancer.

ABSTRACT

Titanium use for making implants to replace the teeth and associated structures is now in common Dental practice. Owing to its high resistance to corrosion in a physiological environment and the excellent biocompatibility that gives it a passive, stable oxide film, titanium is considered the material of choice for intraosseous use. There are certain studies which show titanium as an allergen but the resources to diagnose titanium sensitivity are very limited. The allergic response to titanium is reported in very few cases. The purpose of this article is to create awareness among the people handling and using titanium in dentistry so that better strategies can be developed to manage the allergic response to it

ABSTRACT

Objective:To study the in vitro and in vivo anti-tumor effect of lentinan combined with 5-FU. Methods:MTT method was used to determine the proliferation of H22 in vitro, and the cell cycle changes were analyzed by a flow cytometry. The in vivo anti-tumor effect was evaluated in Kunming mice. The tumor inhibitory rate, thymus/spleen index, IL-2, IL-6 and TNF-α were deter-mined. Results:The in vitro results revealed that lentinan had no obvious effect on the inhibitory rate and cell cycle of the cells treated with 5-FU. In vivo results showed that lentinan at the dosage of 25 and 50 mg·kg-1 could obviously enhance the anti-tumor effect of 5-FU(P<0. 05). Furthermore, lentinan could increase the thymus/spleen index of the tumor-bearing mice. Conclusion:Lentinan com-bined with 5-FU has synergistic effects on anti-tumor activity through nonspecific immune stimulation rather than the direct killing of tumor cells.

ABSTRACT

Onion peel contains a high concentration of quercetin and other flavonoids. In this study, the potential immune-enhancing effects of an onion peel water extract (OPE) supplement were investigated by the rat forced swimming test. OPE was prepared using hot water. Thirty-six male Sprague Dawley rats were fed a pellet diet for 1 week and were then randomly divided into six groups: normal control (NC), forced swimming control (FSC), positive control (quercetin 20 mg/kg), and three groups administered 4, 20, or 100 mg/kg of OPE. Oral drug administration was conducted daily for 4 weeks. All rats, except those of NC group, were forced to swim in water and were considered exhausted when they failed to rise to the water surface to breathe within a 7-s period. Blood lymphocyte counts, immune organ weights, histopathological analysis, and serum interferon (IFN)-gamma, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, and interleukin (IL)-12 levels were determined. OPE-treated rats consumed more food and had an increased thymic cortex to medulla ratio than that observed in FSC group rats (P<0.05). The area of the white pulp in the spleens of OPE-treated group rats was increased compared with that in FSC group rats (P<0.05). Furthermore, blood lymphocyte numbers and IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, and IL-12 concentrations were significantly higher in OPE-fed groups than in FSC group (P<0.05). These results suggest that an OPE supplement can improve the immune status by increasing the number of immune-related cells and specific cytokine levels.

ABSTRACT

The employment of biological medicine has allowed the application of beneficial and systemic therapies where the body is treated as a whole. The ozone therapy is a modality of the biological medicine, it is a natural therapeutical procedure that has represented an extremely safe medical therapy, free from side effects, an effective and feasible method in the field of treatment of immunological diseases, with encouraging results for the social and economic impact that is generated after its application. There are experimental evidences that assert this statement. We hereby describe the immunomodulatory property of ozone therapy, the biological effects of the ozone on the cells of the immune system cells, other cellular types and different immune mediators
