ABSTRACT

Journal clubs have emerged as a learning strategy in postgraduate medical education. Two learning approaches adopted by students have been pointed out: deep and superficial learning. In deep learning, there is motivation based on interest. In superficial learning, students are motivated by fear or failure. Medical residency is an extremely practical part of the medical training. Medical residency is still dependent on preceptors’ capacity to influence students with their knowledge and skills in association with cognitivism. In recent years, Journal clubs have become an interesting option for learning in medical residency, since it promotes interaction and communication among professionals and helps them remain informed about current practices, which facilitates the emergence of new ideas and alternative viewpoints. Reflection is a metacognitive process that promotes greater understanding on the learners’ part when included in learning situations. Journal clubs use the concept of reflection, one of the most appropriate strategies to promote deep and active learning. It should be mandatory in medical residency. The aim of this paper is to analyze journal clubs as a deep learning/teaching strategy in residency.

ABSTRACT

We have used two methods for education of pathology at the Yokohama City University School of Medicine: 1) clinicopathological conferences on autopsy cases and 2) journal club using “Case Records of the Massachusetts General Hospital” published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Both methods are extremely effective for stimulating students' enthusiasm for learning, improving presentation skills, and consolidating the minds of students as future medical staff members. Furthermore, journal club enhances the affinity for reading medical English.
