ABSTRACT

Background. Teratomas are neoplasms that arise from pluripotent germ cells, derived from two or more layers of germ cells. They are classified as mature tumors (cystic or solid), which contain well-differentiated tissues, or as immature tumors, which contain immature and embryonic structures. Its most frequent location is the female and male gonads; the mesenteric location is rare and approximately 40 cases have been described in the world literature. Within the diagnostic and therapeutic approach, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are used to characterize the lesion, assess intra-abdominal extension and the relationship with other structures. The diagnosis must be confirmed by histopathological examination. Clinical case. A 56-year-old female patient with a history of infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the left breast in remission. In follow-up studies, incidental abdominal tomography finding of an abdominopelvic lesion dependent on the mesentery at the level of the mesogastrium, smooth contours with fat-liquid level. Extension studies with negative tumor markers. Results. Due to high clinical and imaging suspicion of teratoma, the patient was taken to resection of the lesion. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of mature cystic teratoma of the mesentery. Conclusion. Mesenteric teratoma is a rare clinical entity and is considered one of the differential diagnoses of an abdominal mass with a compressive effect. Diagnosis is mainly based on clinical examination and imaging findings. Early surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment; laparoscopic or open approach depends on the clinical characteristics and the experience of the surgeon.

ABSTRACT

Mature cystic teratoma of the ovary is the most common type of germ cell tumor. It constitutes approximately 20% of all ovarian neoplasms. As a rare occurrence, however, several types of benign and malignant tumours developing secondarily in dermoid cysts have been reported. Those of central nervous origin are almost exclusively gliomas of astrocytic, ependymal or oligodendroglial lineage. Choroid plexus tumors are unusual intracranial tumors which comprised of only 0.4?0.6% of all brain tumors. These are neuroectodermal in origin and similar in structure to a normal choroid plexus in the form of multiple papillary fronds mounted on a well vascularized connective tissue stroma. The present case report highlights the presence of a choroid plexus tumor in a mature cystic teratoma of the ovary in a 27?year?old woman who came for safe confinement and cesarean section.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To identify the risk factors predisposing posterior capsule rupture (PCR) during mature cataract surgery. Methods: A total of 1302 consecutive mature cataract cases were included in this retrospective study. A detailed examination was performed for each patient and risk factors including age, gender, systemic diseases, ocular comorbidities, surgeon, and surgery method were recorded. Cases with PCR during surgery were classified as complicated. Multivariate logistic regression analysis with a generalized estimating equations method was applied for statistical analysis. Results: The overall rate of PCR was 7.30% (n=95 eyes). After adjusting for confounders, factors that remained significant on multivariate analysis were strabismus (odds ratio [OR]: 5.70, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.17–14.97; P < 0.001), phacodonesis (OR: 4.62, 95% CI: 2.59–8.22; P < 0.001), history of trauma (OR: 4.46, 95% CI: 1.64–12.12; P = 0.003), surgery method (extracapsular cataract extraction/phacoemulsification) (OR: 2.61, 95% CI: 1.60–4.26; P < 0.001), and pseudoexfoliation (OR: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.20–3.16; P = 0. 007). Conclusion: Strabismus, phacodonesis, history of trauma, extracapsular cataract extraction method, and pseudoexfoliation were found to be important risk factors for developing PCR. Appropriate preoperative and perioperative precautions for these higher?risk cases can reduce complications

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To establish a simple, low-cost and time-saving method for primary culture of mature white adipocytes from mice.@*METHODS@#Mature white adipocytes were isolated from the epididymis and perirenal area of mice for primary culture using a modified mature adipocyte culture method or the ceiling culture method. The morphology of the cultured mature adipocytes was observed using Oil Red O staining, and the cell viability was assessed with CCK8 method. The expression of PPARγ protein in the cells was detected with Western blotting, and the mRNA expressions of CD36, FAS, CPT1A and FABP4 were detected using RT-qPCR.@*RESULTS@#Oil Red O staining showed a good and uniform morphology of the adipocytes in primary culture using the modified culture method, while the cells cultured using the ceiling culture method exhibited obvious morphological changes. CCK8 assay showed no significant difference in cell viability between freshly isolated mature white adipocytes and the cells obtained with the modified culture method. Western blotting showed that the freshly isolated adipocytes and the cells cultured for 72 h did not differ significantly in the expression levels of PPARγ protein (P=0.759), which was significantly lowered in response to treatment with GW9662 (P < 0.001). GW9662 treatment of the cells upregulated mRNA expressions of CD36 (P < 0.001) and CPT1A (P=0.003) and down-regulated those of FAS (P=0.001) and FABP4 (P < 0.001).@*CONCLUSION@#We established a convenient and time-saving method for primary culture mature white adipocytes from mice to facilitate further functional studies of mature adipocytes.

ABSTRACT

The present study arose from the observation, in our professional practice, that the adult, to deal with learning issues, for different reasons, can benefit from psychopedagogical care. Therefore, the survey of sources of reading and bibliographic analysis made it possible to investigate the needs of the mature phase, reviewing paradigms, their characteristics and peculiarities. Throughout the work, we emphasize the rescue and/or strengthening of autonomy and authorship as characters of great value, always having as a target the quality of life. The study also leads us to think about the following question proposed by several authors: do we have one more cognitive stage in addition to those proposed by Piaget? We also propose the intention of thinking about the different possibilities of psychopedagogical care, expanding our look and our listening.

ABSTRACT

The anterior mediastinal cysts and masses (AMCM) can be of varied origin and presentation. Although the space in the mediastinum is limited the cysts and masses can grow to a large size before the presentation. They displace the adjacent structures and then can grow into the pleural cavities thereby acquiring a large size. We share our experience of a case of a huge anterior mediastinal cystic mass in a young female who had a characteristic presentation of sudden onset breathlessness in the supine position and immediate relief in the sitting position. The patient recovered well after surgical treatment.

ABSTRACT

Aim: This study was carried out to investigate the antibacterial properties and efficacy of mango (Mangifera indica) leaf extracts on some clinical isolates as test rganisms. Study Design: The study employed statistical analysis of the data and interpretationPlace and Duration of Study: Young and mature mango leaves were collected from the Botanical Garden, Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, Nigeria, and taken to the laboratory for analyses. Methodology: The samples were dried in an oven at 80oC for 3 days. Thereafter, 50 g of each ground mango leaf (young and mature leaves) were soaked separately in 500 ml of water, ethanol (95% v/v), and acetic acid (99.9% v/v) respectively for another 3 days. The soaked materials were filtered through Whatman No. 1 filter paper into sterile beakers and evaporated to dryness in a water bath at 80oC. The dried extracts obtained were reconstituted with water at concentrations of 100, 75, 50, and 25 mg/ml. Test organisms, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Proteus mirabilis, Bacillus cereus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were obtained after proper laboratory screening of isolates from the diagnostic laboratory of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, Nigeria, for confirmation of identity and storage in universal bottles in a refrigerator. Sensitivity tests were carried out with the agar well diffusion method against the test organisms, using tetracycline as the standard control drug, with cultures incubated accordingly. The measured zones of inhibition were compared with the controls and interpreted as resistant, intermediate, or susceptible to mango extracts in accordance with the interpretive guidelines published by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS). Assay for minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was also carried out. Results: Results obtained showed that acetic acid young leaf extract at 100mg/ml produced 50 % susceptibility and 50 % intermediate response of test bacterial species. Generally, at 100 mg/ml, acetic acid young leaf extracts yielded 50% susceptibility and 50% intermediate response among both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Ethanolic extracts gave 100% intermediate sensitivity of Gram-negative species and 50% each of resistant and intermediate response in Gram-positive forms. Aqueous extracts also produced no susceptibility among the test organisms as there was 100% resistance. Extracts of mature mango leaves of all solvents and at all concentrations used yielded no susceptibility response among the test bacterial species on the NCCLS scale. Minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations were found to range from 25 mg/ml to 50 mg/ml. Additionally, it was observed that the sensitivity of organisms to mango extracts increased with concentration. Conclusion: In conclusion, acetic acid has a better extracting potential than ethanol and water as a solvent for the extraction of mango parts. More so, young mango leaves extracted with acetic acid possess higher broad-spectrum antibacterial properties than the mature mango leaves extracted from the same plant. It is therefore recommended that young mango leaves, extracted with acetic acid, be used for the treatment of microbial infections at concentrations not below 50 mg/ml.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To investigate the clinicopathological features of mature teratoma with malignant transformation. Methods: Retrospectively analysis of 1179 cases mature teratoma was done from August 1999 to December 2019 in Institution. 14 cases of mature teratoma with malignant transformation were discussed mainly for the pathological characteristics and clinical manifestations. Results: 4 of them were less than 40 years old. All but one occurred in the ovaries, and the one was in the left anterior mediastinum which was the only male. The clinical manifestations of the patients were atypical. Imaging showed cystic solid mass. Surgery was performed. Polypoid mass, solid nodule and thickened area of cyst wall can be seen on the section of tumor. Pathological results show that there were 5 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, 3 cases of carcinoid, 2 cases of serous carcinoma and 2 cases of thyroid papillary carcinoma, 1 case of carcinosarcoma and 1 case of strumal carcinoid. Two cases of squamous cell carcinoma had pelvic and abdominal metastasis. Immunohistochemistry of case 14 showed that AE1/AE3, CD56, SYN, NSE, PSAP, CDX2 were positive in carcinoid. EMA and CK20 were positive in mucinous glands around carcinoid. Calretinin and inhibin were positive in the mesenchyme adjacent to intestinal mucinous gland. Conclusions: Teratoma with malignant transformation is a rare malignancy, although teratoma is a common germ cell tumor. And it's more common in patients over 40 years, especially those patients who were in menopause. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type and prone to metastasis. Strumal carcinoid was well-defined, but as an endocrine tumor, it may cause a series of digestive, respiratory or hormonal disorders. Therefore, the mature teratomas should be removed in time after detection.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate the clinical characteristics and effectiveness of pulpotomy in mature permanent teeth with bioceramic putty repairmen iRoot and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA).@*METHODS@#Pulpotomy was performed on mature permanent premolars and molars with carious exposures at the Department of General Dentistry of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, from November 2017 to September 2019. The patients were randomly divided into 2 groups, Group iRoot (n=22) and Group MTA (n=21). In Group iRoot, bioceramic putty repairmen iRoot was used as pulp capping agent, while in Group MTA, mineral trioxide aggregate was used as pulp capping agent. All the patients had signed informed consent forms. The clinical efficacy was evaluated by clinical examinations (temperature and electrical activity test) and imaging examinations 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Blinding was used for the patients and evaluators, but due to the obvious differences in the properties of the two pulp capping agents, the blinding method was not used for the treatment provider (the attending physician).@*RESULTS@#There was no significant difference in gender, average age, dentition and tooth position distribution between the two groups (P>0.05). In the study, 7 cases were lost to follow-up 12 months after operation (4 cases in Group iRoot, and 3 cases in Group MTA). One case in each of the two groups had transient sensitivity at the end of the 3-month follow-up, and the pulp vitality was normal at the end of the 6-month follow-up. One case in Group iRoot showed sensitivity at the end of the 12-month follow-up. The success rates of the two groups at the end of 12-month follow-up were 100%, and the cure rates were 94.4% (Group iRoot) and 100% (Group MTA), respectively, and the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05). No cases in Group iRoot had obvious crown discoloration, while 3 cases in Group MTA had.@*CONCLUSION@#The clinical characteristics and effectiveness of pulpotomy in mature permanent teeth with bioceramic putty repairmen iRoot were similar with MTA. Bioceramic putty repairmen iRoot is an acceptable material when used in pulpotomy of mature permanent teeth. Because it is not easy to cause tooth discoloration after treatment and is convenient to operate, bioceramic putty repairmen iRoot has a better clinical application prospect.

ABSTRACT

【Objective】 To investigate the feasibility of differentiation of human AB plasma hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSCs/HPCs) from peripheral blood into mature erythrocytes. 【Methods】 Hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells were induced to be differentiated into mature erythrocytes in the medium supplemented with 5% FBS, 3% FBS + 2% human AB plasma and 8% human AB plasma, respectively, and inoculated in 24-well culture plate at the density of 1×106/mL. Cell proliferation and morphological changes were observed in three different groups. Flow cytometry was used to detect erythroid terminal differentiation markers, i. e. GPA, Band3 and α4(α4-integrin), and late erythroid cell enucleation in different group. The effects of different culture conditions on HSCs/HPCs differentiation into mature erythrocytes were compared. 【Results】 The cell growth and proliferation multiples of the three groups (8% human AB plasma, 5% FBS and 3% FBS+ 2% human AB plasma) were 2 573±116 vs 2 514±246 vs 2 539±119(P>0.05), respectively. The morphological changes of the three groups were similar. With the extension of culture time, the cells differentiated from proerythroblasts to basophils, polychromatic erythroblasts and positive erythroblasts, and almost all of them differentiated into erythrocytes enucleation on day 21. GPA expression and enucleation rate(%) of the three groups were 97.17±1.91 vs 94.95±1.61 vs 96.15±1.38, and 85.1±3.26 vs 86.93±5.96 vs 86.5±3.36(P>0.05), respectively. 【Conclusion】 The differentiation of HSCs/HPCs from peripheral blood plasma into mature erythrocytes from human AB was similar to that of fetal bovine serum.

ABSTRACT

@#Immature cystic teratoma (IMCT) is a rare ovarian malignancy, usually presenting as a huge unilateral pelvoabdominal mass in the pediatric age. Even rarer is the occurrence of a concomitant contralateral mature cystic teratoma. Management issues include use of fertility sparing versus complete surgical staging, and the use of chemotherapy. Fortunately, IMCT carries a good prognosis, especially when diagnosed early. Chemotherapy is used only in higher stage disease and recurrence.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: One of the most common types of ovarian germ neoplasm is Mature cystic teratoma(MCT) which accounts for almost 20% of all ovarian neoplasm. Objective: Analyze patients with Malignant Transformation (Mt) arising from Mature Cystic Teratoma of the ovary to evaluate Clinico-pathological features and treatment modalities. Methods: This is an observational study of 8 patients of Mt in MCT, who had taken complete treatment at GCRI between the period from September 2016 to September 2021. During this observation period, a total of two thousand one hundred and seventy seven ovarian tumors were diagnosed. Out of these patients, 9.32% (203) were MCTs. Of the consecutive cases of 203 ovarian MCTs diagnosed, 3.9% (8) had Mt of MCT, which was our study group. Results: The mean age of patients with Mt in MCT was 47.1 years (27- 65 yrs), while mean age of the patients with MCT was 42 years (35-55 years). Among the 21 postmenopausal, MCT's 28.5% (6) cases developed Mt and only 1% i.e., two cases from premenopausal showed Mt. Abdominal pain as main symptom was seen in 87.5% (7/8) patients. The duration of symptoms ranged from 3 to 6 months. CA125 was elevated in 75% patients. Germ cell markers including beta HCG, AFP, LDH were found to be normal. Conclusion: Diagnosis of malignant transformation of MCT is very difficult. There should be high index of suspicion of malignant transformation if the MCT has been present for a long time; the patient is postmenopausal, age>45 yrs; the tumor diameter is greater than 9.5 cm; or there is thickening of the cyst wall or papillary growth occurs, increased tumor markers

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Mature cystic teratomas are the most frequent ovarian tumor in children. There are few reports describing mature teratoma in twins to date. We present a case of bicorial twins with bilateral ovaric mature cystic teratoma treated with laparoscopic tumorectomy. 45 days after surgery, both present bilateral recurrence with negative tumor markers. The patients underwent a new laparoscopic tumor resection, where histopathological diagnosis confirms mature teratomas. Ultrasound control describes second recurrence 2 months after surgery. There is a possible genetic and/or family association in the presentation of ovarian teratomas, which currently, is unknown.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Photoperiod is, together with temperature and food availability, one of the main stimuli in the regulation of gametogenesis in a wide variety of species. Objective: To evaluate the effect of photoperiod on the production of mature gametes in cultured Arbacia dufresnii. Methods: An experiment was carried out with three varying light-dark regimes/treatments: constant light (24 h light), neutral photoperiod (12 h light, 12 h darkness), and constant darkness (24 h darkness). Twenty females were used in each treatment. All were induced to spawn and, ten randomly selected females from each treatment were induced to spawn again after 30 days. After 60 days, spawning was induced in the remaining females. The gametes were collected in filtered seawater, fixed in Davidson solution, quantified and measured per individual in triplicate in a Sedgewick-Rafter chamber. To determine maturation, fertilization success was evaluated 30 minutes after fertilization. Results: Our results showed that in the aquaculture system, after only two months, mature gametes were obtained, and in the neutral light regime there were 10 times more gametes than the number produced in wild sea urchins during the spawning period in question. We also found that with a greater exposure to light, a lower number of mature gametes was produced. Conclusions: This study suggests the viability of the production of mature gametes in a short period of time as regards Arbacia dufresnii.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, studying the role of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in many pathological inflammatory conditions has become a very active research area. Although the role of MDSCs in cancer is relatively well established, their role in non-cancerous pathological conditions remains in its infancy resulting in much confusion. Our objectives in this review are to address some recent advances in MDSC research in order to minimize such confusion and to provide an insight into their function in the context of other diseases. The following topics will be specifically focused upon: (1) definition and characterization of MDSCs; (2) whether all MDSC populations consist of immature cells; (3) technical issues in MDSC isolation, estimation and characterization; (4) the origin of MDSCs and their anatomical distribution in health and disease; (5) mediators of MDSC expansion and accumulation; (6) factors that determine the expansion of one MDSC population over the other; (7) the Yin and Yang roles of MDSCs. Moreover, the functions of MDSCs will be addressed throughout the text.

Objective:To investigate the safety of Rituximab combined with intensive chemotherapy in the treatment of aggressive mature B-cell lymphoma/leukemia in children. Methods:The clinical data of 77 patients with primary pediatric aggressive mature B-cell lymphoma/leukemia who were treated according to the Chinese Children Cancer Group(CCCG)-mature B-cell lymphoma(BNHL)-2015 protocol at Shanghai Children′s Medical Center, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiaotong University School from November 1, 2014 to July 31, 2018 were collected.A comparison was drawn on the adverse reactions and recovery of immune function indexes between patients in the Rituximab combined with intensive chemotherapy group (R4 group) and the chemotherapy alone group (R3 group). Results:Rituximab combined with AA was associated with a significantly lower platelet count [79.5%(35/44 cases) vs.54.5%(24/44 cases), χ2=6.223, P=0.011] and a higher incidence of infection [70.5%(31/44 cases) vs.36.4%(16/44 cases), χ2=10.275, P=0.001] compared with AA alone; Rituximab combined BB was associated with a higher incidence of mucositis and infection compared with BB alone [40.8%(20/49 cases) vs.29.3%(22/75 cases) and 85.7%(42/49 cases) vs. 72.0%(54/75 cases), respectively], but the differences were not statistically significant.A greater proportion of patients in the R4 group had a decrease in peripheral blood CD 19 positive cells (no statistically significant difference, P>0.05) and a greater proportion had a decrease in serum IgG ( P<0.05) compared to the R3 group, but there was no significant difference in treatment-related mortality between both groups. For patients in the R4 group, the average recovery time of IgG and IgM level was 13.1 months, and the longest recovery time was 31 months after the end of treatment. Conclusions:Rituximab combined with intensive chemotherapy is generally safe in the treatment of aggressive mature B-cell lymphoma/leukemia in children. However, it is often accompanied with prolonged immunoglo-bulin deficiency and the potential risk of secondary infection. Therefore, the strict control over the indications for its application is required, and the gamma globulin replacement therapy deserves to be investigated in the future.
