ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The main purpose of this study was to identify the essential meaning of clinical supervision for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners. METHODS: Data were collected in 2015 through individual in-depth interviews using open-ended questions from 9 women psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners. Each interview lasted about 90 minutes. Verbatim transcripts were analyzed using the Giorgi's phenomenological analysis method. RESULTS: The results of the analysis showed the following four categories: ‘Barren mental health site alone’, ‘Enduring with reflective supervision’, ‘Professional competence enhanced by continuous supervision’, ‘Maintaining a healthy life balance as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner’. CONCLUSION: The findings in this study provide helpful insights for understanding the need for clinical supervision in the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner course. The results also provide support for the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner course and practice development for psychiatric mental health nurses at the work site.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was performed to identify the impact of self-leadership and organizational commitment on intention among psychiatric mental health nurses to remain in the profession. METHODS: For this descriptive correlational study, participants were 177 psychiatric mental health nurses with more .than 3 months of psychiatric mental health experience, working in one of eight hospitals in four areas. Data were collected from December 21, 2015 to February 22, 2016 using self-report questionnaires and were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression with IBM SPSS 19.0. RESULTS: Self-leadership and organizational commitment correlated positively with intention to remain. According to the analysis of the impact of self-leadership and organizational commitment on intention to remain, organizational commitment was the most significant predictor variable. CONCLUSION: Study findings suggest that improvement in the organizational commitment of psychiatric mental health nurses increases their intention remain. It is necessary to come up with a strategy which strengthens organizational commitment in order to improve psychiatric mental health nurses' intention to remain in the profession.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the impact of nursing professionalism on the nursing performance and retention intention among psychiatric mental health nurses. METHODS: As a descriptive correlational study, this study sampled 206 psychiatric mental health nurses in six hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi area through convenience sampling. Data were collected from March 2 to 31, 2009 using a self-report questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 16.0. RESULTS: In the subscales of professionalism, the 'Sense of calling' had the highest mean score while the 'Professional organization' had the lowest mean score. A significant positive correlation was observed in nursing professionalism, nursing performance and retention intention. According to an analysis on the impact of each subscale of nursing professionalism on nursing performance and retention intention, the 'Sense of calling' and 'Autonomy' were the most significant predictor variable. CONCLUSION: The results confirmed that the improvement of psychiatric mental health nurses' professionalism increases their nursing performance and retention intention and the 'Sense of calling' and 'Autonomy' are critical prediction factors. It is necessary to come up with a strategy which strengthens nursing professionalism in order to improve psychiatric mental health nurses' performance and retention intention.
