ABSTRACT

In this work, lemon and onion biomasses commonly found in street markets are for the first time used to develop a facile, fast and low-cost one-step microwave-assisted carbonization method for synthesis of highly fluorescent carbon dots (CDs). The structure and optical properties of CDs were investigated by TEM, XRD, XRF, UV-Vis, FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopy. CDs displayed satisfactory optical pro-prieties, a high quantum yield of 23.6%, and excellent water solubility, and the particle size was 4.23-8.22 nm with an average diameter of 6.15 nm. An efficient fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the CDs and riboflavin was achieved with CDs acting as donor and riboflavin as acceptor. A linear relationship between FRET and the riboflavin concentration from 0.10 to 3.0 μg/mL was observed, allowing the development of an accurate and fast analytical method to determine this vitamin in multivitamin/mineral supplements. Despite the potential interferences in these supplements, CDs were selective for riboflavin under optimized conditions. A paired t-test at a 95% confidence level indicated no statistically significant difference between the proposed and the reference methods. Recovery test presented values ranged from 96.0% to 101.4%. The limit of detection and relative standard deviation were estimated at 1.0 ng/mL and <2.6% (n = 3), respectively. CDs were successfully synthesized in a domestic microwave oven (1450 W, 6 min), presenting satisfactory parameters when compared with results of other studies reported in the literature, suggesting that the proposed method is a potentially useful method for the synthesis of CDs and determination of riboflavin.

Objective To determine the interrelationships among lack of compliance, multi-vitamin treatment adherence, and serum levels of 25-OH vitamin D among women with Roux-en-Y bariatric surgery in the UNEME of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. Methods This is an analytical and transversal study on women with Roux-en-Y bariatric surgery (GCa, n=13) with morbid obesity (GOM, n=13), and apparently healthy women (GCo, n=13). After the corresponding written informed consents, in a first appointment, the medical record, the anthropometric assessment, and the administration of the instrument were performed, while in a second appointment, blood samples were taken in order to measure the vitamin D levels. The assessment instrument was validated through a Cohen Kappa greater than 80% and a Cronbach Alpha of 1. Student's t test and two-tailed, p < 0.05 ANOVAS were calculated. Results While a lack of adherence to multi-vitamin treatment was found in 85% of the women, a lack of post-surgical follow-up, including micro-nutrients lab tests, was found in 100%. A statistically significant difference between the mean vitamin D levels of women with and without multi-vitamin treatment adherence was found (p < 0.05, CI 95%). Conclusions It was demonstrated that the lack of adherence to multi-vitamin treatments is a vitamin D deficiency risk factor among patients with Roux-en-Y bariatric surgery.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of multivitamin vitamin D 300 or 600 units on serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level after 4 weeks of supplementation in postmenopausal women with vitamin D insufficiency. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. METHODS: Postmenopausal women who had vitamin D insufficiency were recruited into the study. The participants were randomized to 3 groups of 4-week treatment period with multivitamin (GPO, Governmental Pharmacy Organization) 2 tablets (contained vitamin D2 amount 600 units), multivitamin 1 tablet (contained vitamin D2 amount 300 units) or placebo. At baseline and after 4 weeks of supplementation, serum 25(OH)D were determined with electrochemilumines-cence immunoassay (Cobas, Roche Diagnostics) and level change of 25(OH)D level were compared among the groups. RESULTS: Out of 144 participants, 49.3% had vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/ml) and 50.7% had vitamin D insufficiency (<30 ng/ml). However, after 4 weeks of the GPO oral multivitamin, serum 25(OH)D levels significantly increased from 19.4 ± 6.3 ng/ml at baseline to 22.2 ± 5.2 ng/ml (P = 0.01) and from 19.5 ± 5.0 ng/ml to 23.3 ± 5.2 ng/ml (P < 0.01) in the groups receiving vitamin D 300 IU and 600 IU/day, respectively. Approximately, 10% of those who took vitamin D had serum 25(OH)D level above the insufficiency level within 4 weeks. There was no significant changes of serum 25(OH)D after 4 weeks in the placebo group. CONCLUSION: Daily supplementation of the generic multivitamin containing vitamin D2 300 and 600 IU daily for 4 weeks significantly increased mean serum 25(OH)D from baseline up above the deficiency level.

ABSTRACT

Drug-induced anaphylaxis is a big pitfall in patients receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy. We report a case of lung cancer patient who experienced two near-fatal anaphylactic reactions that resulted from paclitaxel and multivitamin, seperately. Recurrent severe reactions to different agents led to further investigation to which material the patient was hypersensitive. The skin prick test revealed sensitization to cremophor, which is a commonly used emulsifying agent. This case emphasizes the importance of correctly identifying the culprit drug of anaphylaxis to avoid potentially fatal reaction.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) has been widely used in malnourished, critically ill or surgical patients since the 1970's. However, short-term application of TPN after elective gastrointestinal surgery has rarely been studied. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of postoperative TPN in patients after gastrectomy. METHODS: Forty seven patients who underwent elective gastrectomy from October 2005 to December 2005 were enrolled in this trial. Twenty two patients (TPN group) received multivitamin-containing TPN (Fulcaliq(R), Terumo, Japan) and 25 patients (control group) received the usual 10% dextrose solution for five days after surgery. Vital signs, body weight and nutritional support-related complications were evaluated on a daily basis. In addition, CBC, LFT, electrolyte, and trace elements were measured four times (preoperatively, POD1, POD 3 and POD 6). RESULTS: Nutritional support-related complications did not develop in the groups studied. Body weight and serum albumin levels were not different in comparisons between the two groups. However, in the TPN group, the total protein level on POD 6 had a tendency to be higher than in the control group. On POD 6, AST and ALT levels were significantly higher in the TPN group, but the total bilirubin and cholesterol levels were significantly higher in the control group. CONCLUSION: Multivitamin-containing TPN appears to be safe and effective for patients, in the short term, after gastric surgery.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the relationship of delivery of parenteral fat emulsion and lipid peroxidation, and to observe the safety and effectiveness of parenteral nutrition(PN)in infants with very low birth weight(VLBWI).Methods Thirty infants with VLBWI were randomly divided into 3 groups:the preterm infants received pareneral nutrition containing amino acids and dextrose and soluvit, while intralipid provided separately, intralipid were light exposed(group A,n=10)or light protected(group B,n=10).In group C(n=10),soluvit and vitlipid were co-administered with intralipid and light protected. All the prematures received PN for 7 days and 10 cases of VLBWI not recei-ving PN were collected as control group.Anti-oxidation level, ascorbate, blood glucose, oxygen saturation, serum biochemistry index and body weight were determined before and after experiment. Results Seven days after PN,the MDA concentrations in the test groups all increased(⊿dA was the most,⊿dB was the next,⊿dC was the least). For superoxidedimutuse(SOD)reduction concentrations,⊿dA decreased sharply, then was ⊿dB,⊿dc decreased little,The blood Vit C increase in group B and C were more than group A.Significant changes of MDA,SOD and Vit C existed among the group B,C and A.In the 3 test groups, bilirubin, albumin, prealbumin concentrations were higher after the experiment, but there were no significant changes compared with control group. No significant changes in blood biochemistry, oxygen saturations were found before and after the observation in every group. Conclusions Multivitamin preparations protect fat emulsion against light-induced formation of lipid hydroperoxides, and administering multivitamins with fat emulsion via dark delivery tubing provide a practical way of preventing peroxidation of the lipid while limiting vitamin loss.Furthermore,it is relatively safe to apply fat emulsion intravenously with suitable dose and infusion rate for a few days to VLBWI from the second day of birth who require partial parenteral nutrition.

ABSTRACT

Fifty-four children, aged 1.5-3.5 years, were selected from a nursery and divided into three groups. To the children in group 1 multivitamin fortified formular milk powder of Hai-He brand (70g daily) was given as a supplementary food in addition to the normal diet and whole milk powder of Hai-He brand was given to group 2 as another supplementary food. The third group served as control. This observation was lasted for three months. At the end of the third month, the increments of body weight of the children, tricep skinfold and circumference of upper arm of group 1 were higher than those of group 3 significantly, but there were no significant differences between group 1 and group 2. The hemoglobin content of group 1 increased by 0.8g/dl but group 2 and 3 decreased by 0.53g/dl and 0.72g/dl respectively. At the end of our observation, the concentrations of vitamin B1, C and PP in urine of group 1 were higher than those of other two groups by vitamin load test. Thus, we may consider that the multivitamin fortified milk powder is better than the whole milk powder in improving the vitamin and iron nutritional status of young children.
