ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Franz Alexander Nissl carried out studies on mental and nervous disorders, as a clinician, but mainly as a pathologist, probably the most important of his time. He recognized changes in glial cells, blood elements, blood vessels and brain tissue in general, achieving this by using a special blue stain he himself developed - Nissl staining, while still a medical student. However, he did not accept the neuron theory supported by the new staining methods developed by Camillo Golgi and Santiago Ramón y Cajal. Nissl had worked with the crème de la crème of German neuropsychiatry, including Alois Alzheimer, besides Emil Kraepelin, Korbinian Brodmann and Walther Spielmeyer. He became (1904), Kraepelin's successor as Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Psychiatric Clinic, in Heidelberg. Moreover, in 1918, the year before Nissl´s death, Kraepelin offered him a research position as head of the Histopathology Department of the newly founded "Deutsche Forschungsanstalt fur Psychiatrie" of the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry, in Munich.


RESUMO Franz Alexander Nissl realizou estudos sobre transtornos mentais e nervosos, como clínico, mas principalmente como patologista, provavelmente o mais importante de seu tempo. Ele reconheceu mudanças nas células gliais, elementos sangüíneos, vasos sangüíneos e tecido cerebral em geral, realizando-o por meio de um corante azul especial desenvolvida por ele mesmo - coloração de Nissl, ainda como estudante de medicina. No entanto, ele não aceitou a teoria do neurônio esclarecida pelos novos métodos de coloração desenvolvidos por Camillo Golgi e Santiago Ramón y Cajal. Nissl havia trabalhado com o crème de la crème da neuropsiquiatria alemã, como Alois Alzheimer, além de Emil Kraepelin, Korbinian Brodmann e Walther Spielmeyer. Ele se tornou (1904), o sucessor de Kraepelin como professor de psiquiatria e diretor da Clínica Psiquiátrica, em Heidelberg. Além disso, em 1918, um ano antes da morte de Nissl, Kraepelin o convidou para um cargo de pesquisador, como chefe do departamento de histopatologia da recém-fundada "Deutsche Forschungsanstalt fur Psychiatrie" do Instituto Max Planck de Psiquiatria, em Munique.

ABSTRACT

Resumo O presente estudo reflete sobre o trajeto da histologia na transição do século XIX para o XX, em Portugal e em Espanha, para estabelecer um paralelo entre as contribuições de Santiago Ramón y Cajal e Marck Athias, ambos determinantes para o desenvolvimento da medicina experimental na Península Ibérica, reconhecidos como pilares de uma nova mentalidade científica europeia, na alvorada do século XX. Neste estudo de caso, refletimos sobre as vicissitudes da construção da ciência na “periferia” europeia, no contexto da categoria historiográfica centro-periferia desenvolvida pelo grupo Science and Technology in the European Periphery (Step), confrontando a realidade ibérica com o modelo de ciência alemã, no período em estudo.


Abstract The trajectory of histology at the cusp of the twentieth century in Portugal and Spain is investigated to draw a parallel between the contributions of Santiago Ramón y Cajal and Marck Athias, both of whom were instrumental in the development of experimental medicine in the Iberian Peninsula and recognized as pillars of a new European scientific mindset at the dawn of the twentieth century. In this case study we reflect on the vicissitudes of the construction of science in the “periphery” of Europe, in the context of the historiographical category of center-periphery developed by STEP (Science and Technology in the European Periphery), contrasting the reality in Iberia with the model of German science in the period under study.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effect of a training based on instructional video modeling designed from the mirror neuron theory on executive dysfunction after stroke. Methods 40 stroke inpatients with executive dysfunction from July, 2014 to July, 2015 were divided into control group (n=20) and observation group (n=20). The control group accepted executive rehabilitation training, while the observation group were asked to see the video of executive rehabilitation task before training. They were assessed with Behavioral Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS) before and after intervention. Results The total score and scores of subtests except Rule Shift Cards and Key Search increased more in the observation group than in the control group (t>2.9, P<0.05). Conclusion Rehabilitation video as a visual stimulus for exercise training based on the mirror neuron theory could improve executive function recovery of stroke patients with executive dysfunction.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of motor imagery therapy based on mirror neuron theory on the motor function and gait in stroke survivors.Methods Forty-nine stroke survivors were randomly divided into a treatment group (n =24) and a control group (n =25) using a random number table.All the patients in both groups were given similar conventional rehabilitation treatment.In addition,the patients in the treatment group were given motor imagery training based on mirror neuron theory once a day for 20 min each time,5 days a week,lasting 8 weeks.The Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA),Functional Ambulation Categories (FACs),average step length,the percentage of time spent on the intact foot and the paralyzed foot,and 6 minute walking distance were used to evaluate the subjects' motor function and gait before and after 8 weeks of treatment.Results Before the intervention there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of any of the measurements.At the end of the 8 weeks of treatment all measurements in both groups had significantly improved compared with before training.The averages of all the measures were significantly better in the treatment group than in the control group.Conclusions Motor imagery training based on mirror neuron theory can improve the motor function and gait of stroke survivors.
