ABSTRACT

The study was designed and conducted from April 2004 to November 2005 to assess the infection of intestinal protozoa in school children. A total of 652 stool samples of school children in three schools from different geographical places of Ninh Binh (Red River Delta), Phu Tho (foot hill area) and Ha Giang (northern mountainous) was examined by etherformalin (WHO recommended technique). A general prevalence of protozoa of 19.01%, of which the individual infection rates of 22.96%, 13,18%, and 21.07% were found in Ninh Binh, Phu Tho and Ha Giang, respectively. The protozoa species such as E.histolytica; E.coli; E.nana; E.hartmanni (belonging Amoeba) were more commonly found (11.8%) while G.lambia (Flagellata) was less (5.9%). Oocyst was rare (2.1%) and no case of Cryptosporidium was found.

ABSTRACT

Fasciolopsis buski is common parasite in pigs. Some patients who infected by adult worms of Fasciolopsis buski in several areas, including the provinces of Ninh Binh and Nghe An were sampled. Genome of 18S ribosomal RNA with 1950 nucleotides from giant intestinal fluke (Fasciolopsis buski) was obtained using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing approach for comparative analysis each others and with the data deposited in GenBank (L06668). The adult worms from Ninh Binh and Nghe An were morphologically identified as Fasciolopsis buski. The genetic analysis revealed that the 18S rRNA gene of the giant intestinal flukes isolated in Ninh Binh and Nghe An were similar (homogenous 100% of nucleotides) and showed nearly absolute identity with only 2 divergent nucleotides of 0.01% (2/1950 nucleotides) to the 18S rRNA of the pig Fasciolopsis buski as the data deposited in GenBank (L066608). However, 18S ribosomal RNA of the adult worms of human Fasciolopsis buski collected from the provinces of Ninh Binh and Nghe An were similar to one another

ABSTRACT

Parasitological and knowledge – attitude – practice (KAP) surveys were carried out in 200 schoolchildren of Tran Phu primary school, Tam Diep town, Ninh Binh province and 200 their parents in 1999-2000. Information, education and communication (IEC) campaign for control program of helminth diseases and regular deworming every 6 months with albendazole 400mg single dose for all primary school children were implemented. After 1 year, prevalence of infection of Ascaris and Trichuris were reduced by more 50%, intensity of infection of Ascaris, Trichuris and hookworm were reduced by 86.9%, 84%, 100%, respectively. KAP of school children and their parents was changed significantly. Model of soil-transmitted helminthiasis control based on school has effectiveness, practice and extended application
