ABSTRACT

Background: Patients with hemiplegia often suffer from malnutrition and security threat due to disabilities and inadequate supports. This study aims to explore nursing perceptions regarding problems, necessary nursing supports, and nursing competencies required for the provision of oral feeding assistance to hospitalized hemiplegic patients. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted in Taian City, China in 2016. A purposive sampling method was used, and data were gathered using semi-structured interviews. Totally, 5 faculty members and 10 ward nurses in China were interviewed. In relation to the nursing status regarding oral feeding assistance in the case of hemiplegic patients, background and improvement measures in nursing practice were assessed. Data were analyzed using the content analysis method. Results: Four problems in providing oral feeding assistance to hemiplegic patients were identified: 1) insufficient cognition of nursing roles, 2) insufficient consideration of psychological aspects of the patients, 3) lack of related theoretical and practical education, 4) lack of nutritional support during hospitalization. Twenty-five items of nursing competencies, the knowledge and skills required for oral feeding assistance to hospitalized hemiplegic patients were identified. Conclusions: The nursing competency identified by this study can provide evidence for reviewing the related nursing practice and continuous education in China.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To describe the post competency level and standardized training of new nurses in Guangzhou tertiary hospitals, and to explore the correlation between them.@*Methods@#By using the questionnaire method, 525 new nurses from 8 tertiary hospitals in Guangzhou were surveyed in June 2016 by convenience sampling, using the general information questionnaire, nursing competency questionnaire and standardized training status questionnaire of new nurses in Guangzhou tertiary hospitals.@*Results@#The competency level of new nurses in Guangzhou tertiary hospitals was 333.53±46.96. The scores of standardized training level were 131.43±23.20. The scores of training management level, training content level and nurses′ belief level were 28.30±5.49, 59.07±14.80, 44.06±2.91. Competency level was positively correlated with standardized training level and each dimension with statistical significance (r=0.099-0.132, P<0.05).@*Conclusions@#The post competence of new nurses in Guangzhou tertiary hospitals is at the middle level, and the post competence of new nurses is positively correlated with the level of standardized training. Improving the level of standardized training of new nurses is helpful to enhance the post competence of new nurses. The level of standardized training management, management content and nurse belief can improve the post competence of new nurses.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to examine the degree of career plateau in general hospital nurses, to examine the affects of career plateau on nurses' job satisfaction and nursing competency. METHODS: The sample consisted of 234 general hospital nurses. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation and Hierarchical Multiple Regression. RESULTS: Nurses' career plateau was associated with their job satisfaction, nursing competency. A statistically significant difference in job satisfaction was career plateau, charge nurse or higher in position and resilience predicted 41% of variance in job satisfaction of general hospital nurses. A statistically significant difference in nursing competency was total clinical experience, career plateau, preceptorship experience, charge nurse or higher in position and resilience predicted 43% of variance in nursing competency of general hospital nurses. CONCLUSION: These results of this study as presented above show that general hospital nurses' career plateau is associated with their job satisfaction and nursing competency. Career plateau is the most important variable in nursing competency. Based on the findings, general hospital nurses' career plateau management is empirically verified as a useful and effective method to increase their job satisfaction and nursing competency.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: A descriptive survey was used in this study to identify the relationship between nurses' critical thinking disposition, self-directed learning readiness and professional nursing competency and to examine factors that influence professional nursing competency. METHODS: The data were collected from 188 nurses and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe' test, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 20.0 PC program. RESULTS: Professional nursing competency was found to have significant pure correlations with critical thinking disposition (r=.59, p<.001), and self-directed learning readiness (r=.54, p<.001). The most influential factor influencing nurses' professional nursing competency was critical thinking disposition, followed by self-directed learning readiness (beta=.25, p=.003), work department (beta=.19, p=.001), total clinical career (beta=.19, p=.003), and position (beta=.12, p=.040), and these factors explained 43.8% of the variance in professional nursing competency. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate the necessity of developing and applying strategies and educational programs to enhance individual nurse's critical thinking disposition and self-directed learning readiness. Furthermore, exploration is needed on ways to enhance professional nursing competency.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to develop a nursing competency scale according to a clinical ladder system for intensive care nurses. METHODS: Index of content validation was done by 20 clinical experts and 80 nurses in Intensive Care Units (ICU). RESULTS: The process and results of study are as follows. First, 12 nursing competencies were used in the establishment of the clinical ladder system (Jang, 2000). Second, the first draft of the competency lists was developed. It was based on the clinical nurses' behavioral indicators of nursing competency by Jang (2000), and was modified and supplemented through various literature reviews including competency standards for specialist intensive care nurses in Australia and consultation with 2 clinical nurses with over 10 years experience in the ICU. Third, the draft was examined by 20 clinical experts for content validity. Finally, the final draft was analysed using clinical validity where 20 nurses in each ladder participated. The final number of items was fixed at 309. CONCLUSION: The tool represents expected nursing competency of nurses working in ICU. Intensive care nurses can recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and identify directions for their professional growth by analysing results of their competency evaluation using this tool.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was done to provide information about issues of clinical competency from the perspective of new graduate nurses and to make suggestions for improving undergraduate education programmes. It was also done to clarify learning experiences between fundamentals of nursing and the other major areas of nursing. METHOD: For this study, 7 new graduates and 8 experienced nurses participated. The data were collected through in-depth interviews and analysed in terms of Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory methodology. RESULT: Core category and main categories, were delineated. Clinical nursing competency was found to be a dynamic process with each participant actively engaged in acquiring problem solving ability in diverse clinical settings. These findings have value in understanding the embedded meaning of clinical nursing competency. CONCLUSION: Therefore, the educational programs reflecting the experience of new nursing staff should be developed.
