ABSTRACT

The importance of the relationship between young people and their parental figures for adaptative de-velopment has been supported by literature, namely prosocial capacities and less involvement in risk beha-viors. The quality of peer relationships may also play a protective role regarding alcohol consumption. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of parenting styles and peer attachment on the reasons for alcohol consumption. Participants were 1.044 university stu-dents of both sexes, between 18 and 25 years of age (m = 19.78; sd = 1.68). For data collection, a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Parenting Styles & Dimensions Questionnaire: Short Version (psdq), the Inventory of Peer and Parental Attachment (ippa-peer), the Drinking Motives Questionnaire Revised (dmq-r), and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (audit) were used. The results reveal a positive predictive effect of negative parenting styles (authoritarian and permissive) and alienation with peers on the reasons for alcohol consumption and a negative predictive impact on democratic parenting style and peer attachment ba-sed on communication and trust. Women have a better relational quality with their peers compared to males. Men have a greater diversity of reasons for consuming alcohol. Results are discussed considering the relevance of parenting styles, the quality of peer relationships in personal development, and the motivations of young adults, in a university context, for risk-taking behavior.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Parenting styles and parental self-efficacy are major factors that affect the overall adjustment of children. The current study examined parenting styles and maternal self-efficacy and their association with social-emotional adjustment among Arab preschool children living in Israel. Parenting Styles Questionnaire , Maternal Self-Efficacy Questionnaire , and Adjustment Questionnaire were administered to 420 Arabic-speaking mothers of 3- to 4-year-old children. After employing multiple regression analyses, the results indicated that parenting styles and the overall adjustment of children were significantly correlated. More precisely, a significant association between authoritative parenting style and higher levels of social-emotional adjustment among preschool children was found. Furthermore, maternal self-efficacy was significantly correlated to the overall adjustment of children. In this regard, higher maternal self-efficacy is associated with increased social-emotional adjustment among preschool children. The findings of our study show the applicability of these constructs found relevant across numerous cultures in a unique sample of Arab children living in Israel. Lastly, this study supports intervention programs that promote authoritative parenting style and parental self-efficacy in Arab communities.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundAttitude towards suicide among adolescents is closely linked with their suicidal behavior. Previous studies on suicidal attitudes and related factors primarily focused on school samples, with limited research on relevant clinical samples of adolescents with depressive episode. ObjectiveTo analyze the attitudes towards suicidal behavior and the influencing factors in adolescent patients with depressive episode, so as to provide references for suicide intervention in this population. MethodsA total of 100 adolescent patients who met the diagnostic criteria for depressive episode according to the International Classification of Diseases, tenth edition (ICD-10) were selected from the outpatient and inpatient departments of the Fourth People's Hospital of Wuhu from May 2021 to July 2022. A self-designed general demographic questionnaire, Hamilton Depression Scale-17 item (HAMD-17), Suicide Attitude Questionnaire (QSA), Egma Minnen av Bardndosnauppforstran (EMBU) and Internet Addiction Test (IAT) were used to evaluate the patients' depressive symptoms, attitudes towards suicide, parenting styles and Internet addiction, respectively. Spearman and Pearson correlation analyses were used to examine the correlation between the factor scores of attitudes towards suicidal behavior in QSA and demographic characteristics, HAMD-17 score, EMBU score and IAT score. Multiple linear regression was conducted to screen the risk factors associated with attitudes towards suicidal behavior, and ROC curves were plotted to evaluate the predictive efficacy of each factor. ResultsThe scores on attitudes towards suicidal behavior in QSA among adolescent patients with depressive episode were positively correlated with scores on attitude towards the suicidal person, attitude towards euthanasia, as well as scores on mother's emotional warmth and understanding factor (r=0.210~0.485, P<0.05 or 0.01). Conversely, they were negatively correlated with father's education level, suicidal behavior in the past 6 months, HAMD-17 score, IAT score, father's punishment and harshness, father's overinvolved, father's rejection and denial, father's overprotection, mother's overinvolved and overprotection, mother's rejection and denial, and mother's punishment and harshness factor scores (r=-0.571~-0.290, P<0.05 or 0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that QSA scores on attitude towards the suicidal person (β=0.198, P<0.01) and attitude towards euthanasia (β=0.302, P<0.01) positively predicted score on attitude towards suicidal behavior, and fathers' education level (β=-0.180, P=0.043), HAMD-17 scores (β=-0.366, P<0.01) and IAT scores (β=-0.191, P=0.030) negatively predicted scores on attitude towards suicidal behavior. The differences in predictive efficacy between the factors were not statistically significant (Z=-1.289~0.092, P>0.05). ConclusionInternet addiction, depression severity, attitudes towards suicide, attitudes towards euthanasia and father's education level may influence attitudes towards suicidal behavior in adolescent patients with depressive episode. ABSTRACT

This article presents the construction and evidence of validity of an instrument for measuring parenting skills based on Positive Discipline, an approach that helps parents and caregivers teach life skills to their children. The items were constructed based on a theoretical review of Parenting Styles, Schema Therapy, and Positive Discipline and were subsequently evaluated by five expert judges and five individuals from the target audience. Following these evaluations, eight items were excluded and others were changed, leading to the pilot version of the Positive Discipline Parenting Skills Scale (Escala de Habilidades Parentais em Disciplina Positiva EHPDP), represented by 28 items. Data were collected from a sample of 281 mothers with children aged 4-12 years. Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed a structure of 16 items divided into three factors. Cronbach's Alpha and Composite Reliability indicated adequate internal consistency for the instrument. Pearson's correlation revealed evidence of convergent and discriminant validity with the validated Brazilian versions of the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale. The results indicate that the EHPDP is a valid and reliable instrument to measure Positive Discipline parenting skills.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: the macho mentality is a phenomenon that persists in the Latin American population; however, the factors that generate it are not clear. Therefore, the study is carried out with the objective of analyzing the macho mentality, based on factors such as parental styles and social vulnerability; and comparing according to country of origin: Argentina and Peru, respectively. Method: the sample consisted of 389 (M.age = 35.87, SD = 10.13) primary caregivers of children and adolescents from 4 to 16 (M.age = 9.33, SD = 4.66, feminine = 196) years of age from different regions of Peru and Argentina. The instruments used were the Machismo subscale of the Multiphasic Evaluation of Cultures (MACC-SF), the Spanish Adaptation of the Parental Upbringing Questionnaire, and an ad-hoc sociodemographic record, which were all applied through social networks using a Google® form. Results: in both samples, the levels of machismo are relatively low, although the Argentine sample presented lower levels of machismo and more positive parenting habits compared to that of Peru. In turn, a negative association was found between machismo and parenting styles, with greater intensity in the dimensions: satisfaction with parenting and discipline. Finally, machismo was negatively associated with social vulnerability and parenting styles. Conclusions: macho beliefs would be associated with a lower socioeconomic level and more authoritarian and inflexible parenting styles, which are also governed by their traditions and a cultural legacy of conservatism in comparison to more flexible and democratic cultures.

ABSTRACT

Parents influence children's conduct, emotions, and personality. This study examined parental style and assertiveness in teens with and without learning difficulties. The researcher drew 80 student demographics to do this. 40 with learning impairments and 40 without were chosen. T-test and correlation were used to examine the data. The study found a difference in assertiveness between learning disabled and nondisabled teens. The study found a moderate association between authoritative, authoritarian, permissive/indulgent, and negligent parenting and assertiveness. The study recommended that parents of teens be mindful of how parenting style affects their children's assertiveness.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Diana Baumrind (1966) proposed three primary parenting styles: the authoritarian style, the permissive style, and the authoritative style. Almost two decades later, Maccoby and Martin (1983) theoretically added a fourth (negligent) parenting style. Parental styles are based on variations in the levels of the parental dimensions of sensitivity (warmth, affection), parental demand (parental control) and autonomy granted (Richaud, Lemos & Vargas Rubilar, 2013). It has been suggested that the findings related to broad parenting styles are not always easy to interpret (Stewart & Bond, 2002) and that Baumrind's three-category parenting style typology can be usefully disaggregated into parenting dimensions (Darling and Steinberg, 1993). A dimensional approach can be particularly valuable in allowing an independent assessment of parenting and discipline (Locke & Printz, 2002). One of these dimensional models is that of Power (2002), which includes 11 dimensions of which the first three: Sensitivity, Inconsistency and Follow-up through discipline, evaluate a general dimension of the relationship of parents with their children, as perceived by parents. These three basic dimensions correspond to those of Baumrind described above: sensitivity (warmth, affection), autonomy granted (permissiveness) and parental demand (parental control), respectively. Power's Parenting Styles Inventory (PDI) assesses parenting styles from a parent's perspective. It is a self-report that, as we said, assesses 11 dimensions of parents' attitudes and behaviors towards their children. It has 57 items organized into 11 scales, each of which evaluates different dimensions of parent-child relationships. The first three scales, which include 13 items, measure a "general dimension" (Support / care, Inconsistency and Follow-up through discipline / control). The following scales assess different types of control and are distinguished from the general dimensions, in that they focus on disciplinary practices in response to the child's misbehavior. The PDI-S is a shortened version, which retains the most valid and reliable components of the original PDI. The PDI-S can be used with parents of children between 3 and 12 years old, and was developed from the PDI (Slater & Power, 1987). Given the importance of having an adequate instrument to assess parental style from the parents' perspective, the objective of this study is to adapt the Inventory of Parental Dimensions in its short version (Power, 2002) to the Argentine population. The 13 items included in the evaluation of the General Dimension, were translated, which includes the dimensions: Support / care, Inconsistency and Follow-up through discipline / control). The translated Inventory was administered to an intentional sample of 771 adults, 535 women and 236 men, between 26 and 63 years of age (Me = 38.56 SD = 4.76), middle class (Stratum II of the Graffar / Méndez Castellanos Scale), of the non-clinical population, and parents of children who attended pre-school in 12 private schools in different provinces of Argentina (Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, Santa Fe and Tucumán). The Confirmatory Factor Analysis showed that the three-dimensional theoretical model, proposed by the authors of the original test, satisfactorily adjusted to the data, indicating an adequate consistency of the test structure. In addition, reliability was analyzed as internal consistency evaluated through McDonald's omega, obtaining the following values: Support / care = .74; Follow-up through discipline / control = .70 and Inconsistency = .74. Finally, given that the Inventory has been studied with an extensive sample, drawn from several Argentine provinces, the results obtained are generalizable to almost the entire country.

ABSTRACT

Relationships between caregivers and children have been fundamental to child development. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between these parenting styles (EP) with the children's personality traits. Fifty mothers and their children aged 10 to 12 years, from three public schools participated. The sociodemographic questionnaire and the Parenting Styles Inventory (IEP) were answered by the mothers and the IEP and the Junior-Eysenck Personality Questionnaire by the children. The Kolmogorov-Smirnova normality test was performed and after the data showed to follow normal distribution, using a Pearson correlation analysis using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) with a significance level p ≤ 0.05. There was disagreement regarding the children's perception of the EP adopted by the mothers and the mothers' view under their EP styles in relation to their children. Relevant associations demonstrated the existence of a relationship between the mothers' EPs and their children's personality traits. Punishment, relaxed discipline, negative monitoring, neglect and abuse were positively correlated, with weak to moderate intensity, mainly with personality traits, psychoticism and neuroticism.

ABSTRACT

A chronic childhood illness represents a great source of stress to patients and their families. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the psychological adjustment of children/adolescents with chronic diseases and their caregivers and verify the mediating role of parental styles. 41 children/adolescents with chronic diseases and 72 healthy children and their respective parents/caregivers participated in this study. The groups did not differ concerning the psychological adjustment of both the children and their caregivers. It was also found that negligence and inconsistent punishment mediated the relationship between children and parental maladjustment. Conclusions highlight the psychological adjustment multidetermined and multidirectional nature, as well as the importance of psychological interventions aimed at promoting positive parental practices.

ABSTRACT

Abstract. Objective. To conduct a systematic review of the evolution and documented empirical evidence on the effect of parenting on the development of prosocial behaviors in childhood and adolescence. Method. A bibliometric and citation network analysis was performed using bibliometrix and Tree of Science (ToS) tools. The bibliographic search was carried out in Scopus and Web of Science. Results. Scientific production between 2000 and 2020 increased between 10% and 13%. The studies were segmented into classic, structural, and recent. Classical studies analyzed the direct effect of parental discipline on prosocial behaviors. The structural ones analyzed the emotional factors that mediate the association between parenting and prosocial behaviors. The recent ones provide additional evidence on the mediating role of empathy and the incorporation of a cross-cultural and ethnic perspective in the study of parenting styles and prosocial behaviors.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: We examined the association between personality traits and parenting styles in boys victims of sexual abuse (SA). Methods: Sixty-two (62) boys were divided into two groups: 32 (Victims of SA group, age 11.7±1.28) and 30 non-victims of SA (Comparison group, age 11.6±1.22). All participants completed the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-J) and the Parenting Styles Inventory (PSI). The intelligence quotient (IQ) was also assessed. Results: Both groups did not differ in terms of IQ. In the SA group, men (97%) were the biggest abusers, 85% of the parents were divorced and the father was the biggest aggressor (44%). The SA victims had higher neuroticism (p <0.001) and identified riskier parental practices, while the comparison group reported good parental practices (p<0.05). The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that higher negative paternal parental style scores increase the chance of belonging to the victims group. Discussion: Victims of SA present a higher risk of neuroticism and perception of dysfunctional family dynamics, with seriously reversed social roles. Further studies are needed to investigate the behavioral, cognitive, emotional, personality and parental styles, and the development of psychological intervention programs and other professional practices for victims of SA and their families in various contexts of violence.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to validate the Parental Style Scale and to assess a possible association between parenting styles and sociodemographic factors with childhood overweight and obesity in students of municipal educational establishments. The sample was composed of 217 children between 4 and 7 years old in schools in Chillán, Chile, and their caregivers. The instruments included the Parental Style Scale and a demographic questionnaire. The Parental Style Scale was validated and constructs used in a linear model to determine the relationship between the parental style and child BMI z-score. A logistic model was used to determine the relationship between parenting style and the probability of going from a normal nutritional state to one with overweight. It was found that high levels of parental affection were associated with overweight and obesity in children. From the sociodemographic variables evaluated, only the primary education level of parents was associated with overweight and obesity in the child. The implications for professional intervention with families are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Phenylketonuria (PKU) requires tight control to prevent neurocognitive impairment but reports show that patients may present mild cognitive defects related to higher impulsivity. We hypothesize that chronic intervention may influence the parents and child bonding and the child´s resources to face problems. To describe the PKU parenting styles perceived by the children (PS) and their coping strategies (CS) assessing their relationship with impulsivity, 30 early diagnosed and adequately treated PKU children and 30 non PKU aged-paired controls (CG) were compared. The Argentine Children´s Coping Questionnaire, Argentine Scale Perception of the Relationship with Parents, WISC IV Comprehension Subtest, and CPT II test were administered. PKU PS were based on control: strict to pathologic in the mother and acceptable in the father (both p<0.05 vs. CG). Children significantly sought greater support and showed less emotional control when facing conflicts. These characteristics positively correlated with maternal control r:.383 and r:.398 (both p<0.05). Impulsivity was higher in PKU (p<0.05) but didn´t associate with PS or CS. Maternal strict control wasn´t linked to the higher impulsivity found (possibly neurobiologically based). Nevertheless, if both factors are present, patients may develop a psychological and/or behavioral trait of greater dependency and impulsivity that must be considered in their follow-up.

ABSTRACT

The practical abilities of parents to care for, protect and educate their children, ensuring their healthy development, are the central aspects of parental competencies. The intervention of the Chilean Focused Prevention Programme (PPF) and Triple P in its 4th level (group) - of Australian origin - has, among its purposes, to strengthen parental competencies in people who are in charge of a child. The present research of quasi-experimental design, of pre-post type with an equivalent control group, compared the effectiveness of both programmes in parenting skills in a sample of 15 parents and caregivers of children between 2 and 12 years old. The results show no significant differences in the variables of parenting styles, parental self-efficacy, and adjustment difficulties in childhood between the interventions carried out through the Triple P model versus PPF, nor in assessing these variables pre and post intervention in either of the two strategies. Although the results are interesting as a discussion of the effectiveness of these intervention strategies on the variables described, the difficulties associated with families' adherence to the citations and the low number of subjects in the research should be considered when analysing our results. It is recommended to include qualitative analyses and research with a higher N to compare the results and improve the evidence on the effectiveness of these intervention programmes.

ABSTRACT

@#Adolescence stage is filled with enormous changes and challenges. At this stage, adolescents are not mentally mature so they failed to adjust to the changes of their life and are at greater risk of developing smoking habit. Many psychosocial factors contribute to adolescents’ smoking, among them family role is prominent. So, the present correlational study aimed to highlight the familial predictors of smoking in adolescents. It was hypothesized that parenting styles, lack of parent-child communication, less parental monitoring, parents and sibling smoking would be related to adolescents smoking. Data was collected from 150 adolescents (smokers: 70, non-smokers: 80) throughconvenient sampling technique. Parental bonding instrument and parental monitoring questionnaire were used. Binary Logistic regression revealed less Parental care and father’s monitoring, lack of mother-child communication and siblings’ smoking as significant predictors of smoking. The study implications are discussed with its application in health, social and counseling psychology.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The relationships w ith p arental fi gures are important for young adults in t he d eveloping of appropriated coping strategies and social skills. The presence of a democratic parenting style seems to minimize the involvement of the children in risk behaviors, namely the consumption of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. The present study aims to analyze the role of parenting styles in the risk of alcohol consumption, as also the development of additive and self-destructive behavior in university students. The sample consisted of 1044 young people, of whom 277 (26.5%) were male and 767 (73.5%) were female. All participants were between 18 and 25 years of old (M=19.78; SD=1.68). Were used a sociodemographic questionnaire and self-report instruments, namely the Parenting Styles & Dimensions Questionnaire: Short Version (PSDQ), the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Deviant Behavior Scale (ECD). The results point to a predictive effect of negative parenting styles (authoritarian and permissive) in relation to the additive and self-destructive behavior of the university students. The mediating role of alcohol consumption in the association between negative parenting styles and additive and self-destructive behavior was also verified.

ABSTRACT

Pregnancy in Kidney Transplant (KT) recipients is usually considered of high risk. KT recipients are susceptible to have obstetric complications. Studies report that KT recipients are at higher risk of experiencing distress during and after pregnancy, situation that may have an impact in parenting styles and child's development. Characteristics of parenting styles in KT recipients' offspring and its possible impact in cognitive functions remain unknown. The aims of the study were: 1) to determine if there are differences in parenting styles and cognitive functions among KT recipients' offspring and healthy women's offspring, and 2) to identify associations between high risk pregnancy variables, parenting styles and cognitive functions. Twenty-three children (9 cases and 14 controls) aged 8-15 years and their mothers were assessed with the (WISC-V) and the CRPBI. Mothers were asked to complete BRIEF, PCRI-M, BDI-II and a socioeconomic status instrument. A transversal correlational design was performed. No differences were found between case and control group in parenting styles or cognitive functions. However, an association between parenting styles and cognitive functions was found. Being raised with communication and discipline is associated with increased cognitive results.
