ABSTRACT

Osteoporosis (OP) is a systemic metabolic bone disease characterized by bone microstructure degeneration and bone mass loss, which has a high prevalence and disability rate. Effective prevention and treatment of OP is a major difficulty in the medical community. The nature of OP is that multiple pathological factors lead to the imbalance of human bone homeostasis maintained by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Ferroptosis is a non-apoptotic cell death pathway, and its fundamental cause is cell damage caused by iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Studies have shown that ferroptosis is involved in and affects the occurrence and development of OP, which leads to OP by mediating the imbalance of bone homeostasis. Ferroptosis is an adjustable form of programmed cell death. The intervention of ferroptosis can regulate the damage degree and death process of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which is beneficial to maintain bone homeostasis, slow down the development process of OP, improve the clinical symptoms of patients, reduce the risk of disability, and improve their quality of life. However, there are few studies on ferroptosis in OP. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a medical treasure with unique characteristics and great application value in China. It has been widely used in China and has a long history. It has the multi-target and multi-pathway advantages in the treatment of OP, with high safety, few toxic and side effects, and low treatment cost, and has a significant effect in clinical application. The intervention of TCM in ferroptosis to regulate bone homeostasis may be a new direction for the prevention and treatment of OP in the future. This article summarized the regulatory mechanisms related to ferroptosis, discussed the role of ferroptosis in bone homeostasis, and reviewed the current status and progress of active ingredients in TCM compounds and monomers in the regulation of OP through ferroptosis, so as to provide a theoretical basis for the participation of TCM in the prevention and treatment of OP in the future.

ABSTRACT

Ferroptosis is a recently identified type of non-apoptotic cell death, mainly caused by disruption of cellular metabolic pathways such as iron metabolism and reactive oxygen species metabolism, characterized by intracellular iron overload and reactive oxygen species accumulation leading to lipid peroxidation. Ferroptosis is closely related to renal diseases. The role of ferroptosis in diseases such as acute kidney injury and renal cell carcinoma has been extensively studied, and new discoveries and advances have been made in its relationship with renal fibrosis. The paper systematically reviews the relationship between ferroptosis and renal fibrosis in terms of the latest regulatory mechanisms of ferroptosis and its role in renal fibrosis, and explores the potential clinical application of targeted inhibition of ferroptosis to prevent renal fibrosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To correlate multiphase CT angiography (mCTA), serum lipid peroxidation (LPO) and thrombus precursor protein (TpP) levels with recurrence of acute cerebral infarction (ACI) in older adults and investigate the value of these indicators in the predication of ACI recurrence. Methods:A total of 128 older adult patients with ACI who received treatment in Ningbo Medical Center Lihuili Hospital, China between January 2019 and January 2020 were included in this study. All of them were followed up for 1 year. They were divided into ACI recurrence group ( n = 29) and no ACI recurrence group ( n = 99) according to whether they had recurrent cerebral infarction. All patients underwent mCTA. Maas system and Tan score were used according to mCTA images. Serum TpP level was measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum LPO level was measured using Yagi's fluorescence method. Multiple linear regression analysis was used for correlation analysis. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the efficacy of mCTA and serum LPO and TpP levels in the diagnosis of ACI. Results:Tan score in the ACI recurrence group was significantly lower than that in the no ACI recurrence group [(1.06 ± 0.26) points vs. (1.89 ± 0.82) points, t = 5.35, P < 0.05]. Serum TpP and LPO levels in the ACI recurrence group were (7.22 ± 1.35) mmol/L and (11.23 ± 2.58) nmol/mL, respectively, which were significantly higher than those in the no ACI recurrence group [(3.06 ± 0.28) mmol/L, (7.23 ± 0.37) nmol/mL, t = 28.86, 15.04, both P < 0.001]. ACI recurrence in older adult patients was correlated with Tan score and serum LPO and TpP levels (both P < 0.05). The sensitivity of mCTA combined with serum LPO and TpP levels in the diagnosis of ACI in older adults was 93.10%-96.60% and its specificity was 100.00%. The ROC curve analysis showed that the area under the ROC of mCTA, LPO and TpP in the prediction of ACI recurrence in older adults was 0.986 (95% CI = 0.966-1.000), 0.976 (95% CI = 0.930-1.000) and 0.968 (95% CI = 0.905-1.000), respectively. Conclusion:ACI recurrence in older adults is correlated with Tan score and serum LPO and TpP levels. mCTA, Tan score, and serum LPO and TpP levels have high sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of ACI recurrence in older adults, and therefore have a high diagnostic value.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine the enamel mass variation after a prolonged bleaching treatment using a calcium-containing 4% hydrogen peroxide gel Twenty sound bovine incisors were randomly assigned to two groups (n=10) stored in G1) distilled water and G2) artificial saliva. An electronic analytic scale (.000 grams measurements) was used to determine the enamel mass variation before and after the bleaching procedures at the following evaluation times: T0) before the bleaching procedures; T1) 14 days of treatment, as instructed by the manufacturer; T2) 21 days of treatment, 50 % beyond what is instructed by the manufacturer; and T3) 28 days of treatment, 100 % beyond what is instructed by the manufacturer. The highest mean was observed at T2/G2 (0.3259 g) and the lowest at T2/G1 (0.3265 g). The specimens stored in distilled water (G1) showed 6 % mass reduction when T0 (0.3277 g) was compared to T3 (0.3277 g). On the other hand, the specimens stored in artificial saliva exhibited a significant mass increase of 19 % when T0 (0.3521 g) was compared to T3 (0.3528 g). Prolonged bleaching therapy using 4 % hydrogen peroxide with calcium resulted in a massive reduction when water was used as a storage medium. When the specimens were stored in artificial saliva, an increase in mass was observed, probably due to the mineralizing properties of the artificial saliva.

ABSTRACT

The time interval after tooth bleaching is a significant variable for the adhesion to the tooth structure. The bleaching agents used on the enamel surface, due to the degradation of the peroxides used, generate oxygen free radicals that alter the bonding strength. The literature has shown conclusively that the time that has elapsed since a bleaching to the moment of restoration is decisive for the adhesion to the enamel. The objective of this work was to review the literature about the influence of time after dental bleaching and its effect on the strength of adhesion to enamel of composite resins. Data collection was carried out through electronic databases such as: Scielo, EBSCO, academic repositories, obtaining 36 articles and thesis. After the analysis, it can be considered that time is decisive in the adhesive resistance and that the alterations after tooth bleaching extend until the subsequent week, lasting up to four weeks, a time that the literature considers necessary for the elimination of residual oxygen.

ABSTRACT

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is often associated with organ donation and renal transplantation, which leads to an increase of fatality rate, hospitalization time and hospitalization costs. In recent years, studies have shown that ferroptosis is closely related to AKI, but the exact molecular biological mechanism has not been clarified, which need more research. In this article, the role of ferroptosis in AKI was reviewed from the aspects of ferroptosis related biomarkers and biological reactions, in order to find a new possible direction for the prevention and treatmentof AKI.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate dental sensitivity using visual analogue scale, a Computerized Visual Analogue Scale (CoVAS) and a neurosensory analyzer (TSA II) during at-home bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide, with and without potassium oxalate. Materials and Methods Power Bleaching 10% containing potassium oxalate was used on one maxillary hemi-arch of the 25 volunteers, and Opalescence 10% was used on the opposite hemi-arch. Bleaching agents were used daily for 3 weeks. Analysis was performed before treatment, 24 hours later, 7, 14, and 21 days after the start of the treatment, and 7 days after its conclusion. The spontaneous tooth sensitivity was evaluated using the visual analogue scale and the sensitivity caused by a continuous 0°C stimulus was analyzed using CoVAS. The cold sensation threshold was also analyzed using the TSA II. The temperatures obtained were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=5%). Results The data obtained with the other methods were also analyzed. 24 hours, 7 and 14 days before the beginning of the treatment, over 20% of the teeth presented spontaneous sensitivity, the normal condition was restored after the end of the treatment. Regarding the cold sensation temperatures, both products sensitized the teeth (p<0.05) and no differences were detected between the products in each period (p>0.05). In addition, when they were compared using CoVAS, Power Bleaching caused the highest levels of sensitivity in all study periods, with the exception of the 14th day of treatment. Conclusion We concluded that the bleaching treatment sensitized the teeth and the product with potassium oxalate was not able to modulate tooth sensitivity.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: in order to achieve a perfect harmony in the shape and colors of the teeth, the dentistry has developed several alternatives for the improvement of dental aesthetics, and for the treatment of chromatic alterations, the most commonly used procedure is tooth whitening. Objective: to carry out a literature review about the possible side effects of dental bleaching techniques and how to minimize them. Material and Methods: a review of the literature was carried out through a bibliographic search in the following online databases: PubMED, Medline, Lilacs, Scielo and Scopus, through the screening of relevant articles published between 2010 and 2016. Results: among the side effects of tooth whitening, sensitivity during and after bleaching has been one of the most commonly reported adverse effects in the literature, a fact that may be a result of increased permeability of the enamel, with a possible diffusion of the peroxide to the pulp. The most effective treatments for sensitivity control are: 5% potassium nitrate, 2% neutral sodium fluoride, laser therapy and the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatories. The bleaching gel should be removed completely at the end of bleaching, but if any amount is left behind, the patient may eventually swallow, which may lead to irritation in the gastrointestinal mucosa, so it is important to avoid excess product And applications, with the careful removal of excess, to avoid its ingestion and contact with soft tissues. Conclusion: regardless of the technique of whitening to be used, it is necessary the supervision and follow-up of a dental surgeon, because with his careful diagnosis and appropriate treatment, satisfactory results will be achieved and the side effects avoided and/or minimized. ABSTRACT

With the appreciation of aesthetic dentistry, combined with the current conservative philosophy of dentistry, the bleaching techniques had considerable clinical progress. The dental discoloration comes being one of the most popular aesthetic problems by patients in the dental office. The use of at-home and in-office bleaching techniques, when properly executed, enable satisfactory esthetic results. The aim of this study was presenting the tooth bleaching techniques (at-home and in-office), through a literature narrative review. It was held a discussion of the main procedures adopted, by comparing the short-term and long-term effects, advantages, disadvantages and side effects. At these treatments, the main used bleaching agents are carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide. Available in varying concentrations, are responsible for promoting satisfactory results in whitening teeth, leaving the dentist perform an analysis of the patient?s profile, with a view to choosing the best alternative treatment. Upon review presented, both treatments were similar. However, some peculiarities must be observed: for patients with tooth sensitivity, the most suitable is the at-home bleaching; in patients with gingival recession, the most suitable is the in-office bleaching

ABSTRACT

Background: Human milk is considered the best source of nutrition for young infants. However, if mothers cannot provide adequate breast milk or if infants are premature or have a low birth weight, breast-feeding must often be replaced or complemented with infant formulas (IFs). The interactions between infant formula components (proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamin and minerals) mainly affect carbohydrates and proteins (Maillard reaction, MR), but those involving proteins are especially important in products used in infant feeding because of the high protein requirements of infants. On the other hand, fatty acids (FAs) are considered important in infant development. Objectives: The aim of the present work was to test the stability of IFs made with different ingredients, analyzing the available lysine losses (for protein stability) and the FAs content and the peroxide value (for fat stability) during stored at normal and adverse conditions and to propose a faster control of that stability. Methods: Available lysine analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), lipid oxidation by titrimetric method and FAs profile by gas chromatography (GC) were determined in four types of IFs prepared with intact and partially hydrolyzed proteins and different carbohydrates (lactose or maltodextrins) during storage at 4, 20 and 30 ºC for 24 months at normal water activity (Aw=0.1-0.4), and at Aw of 0.65 at 20 and 30 ºC for 4 weeks. These IFs were prepared twice (IF1 and IF2) in different batches by a Spanish dietary product company. Results: At 30ºC, available lysine losses were 40-50% in all IFs analyzed. The behavior and percentage lysine loss between 1 and 4 weeks of storage at 30 °C with Aw=0.65 was similar to those obtained after 24 months of storage at 30 °C. No significant changes were observed in fatty acid profile during storage. Oxidation was only observed in opened packs and after 4 weeks/30 °C/Aw=0.65. Conclusions: The losses of available lysine increase to higher time and storage temperatures. The FAs shows a good stability for any storage condition; however peroxide values prove more sensitive than FAs changes for evaluating fat oxidation during the storage of IFs.

ABSTRACT

Dental bleaching has become one of the most frequently requested esthetic treatments in dental offices. Despite the high clinical success observed with this procedure, some adverse effects have been reported, including a potential for developing premalignant lesions, root resorption and tooth sensitivity, especially when misused. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genotoxic response using a micronucleus (MN) assay, after the application of two concentrations of carbamide peroxide. Thirty-seven patients were divided into two groups and randomly received either a 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) (19) or a 16% carbamide peroxide (18) concentration for 21 days in individual dental trays. Gingival margin cells were collected immediately before the first use (baseline), and then 15 and 45 days after baseline. The cells were placed on a histological slide, stained by the Feulgen technique, and evaluated by an experienced blinded examiner. One thousand cells per slide were counted, and the MN rate was determined. The two groups were analyzed by the Wilcoxon rank-sum test and the Kruskal-Wallis equality-of-populations rank test. A slight increase in MN was observed for both groups, in comparison with the baseline, at 15 days. However, no difference was observed between the two groups (10% and 16%), at either 15 or 45 days (p = 0.90). When bleaching is not prolonged or not performed very frequently, bleaching agents containing carbamide peroxide alone will not cause mutagenic stress on gingival epithelial cells.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study was evaluate the fracture resistance of endodontically-treated teeth after bleaching treatment using 15% hydrogen peroxide plus titanium dioxide nanoparticles (15HPTiO2) photoactivated by LED-laser, in comparison with protocols using 35% hydrogen peroxide (35HP), 37% carbamide peroxide (37CP) or sodium perborate (SP). Material and method: After endodontic treatment, fifty bovine extracted incisors were divided into five groups (n = 10): G1- without bleaching; G2- 35HP; G3- 37CP; G4- 15HPTiO2 photoactivated by LED-laser and G5- SP. In G2 and G4, the bleaching protocol was applied in 4 sessions, with a 7 day interval between each session. In G3 and G5, the materials were kept in the pulp chamber for 21 days, but replaced every 7 days. After 21 days, the crowns were subjected to compressive load at a cross head speed of 0.5 mm/min, applied at 135° to the long axis of the root using an eletromechanical testing machine, until fracture. The data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey tests (p = 0.05). Result: The bleaching treatment in endodontically-treated teeth with 15HP plus TiO2 nanoparticles and photoactivated by LED-laser caused reduction of the fracture resistance similarly provided by 35HP, 37CP or SP (p>0.05). All bleaching treatments reduced the fracture resistance compared to unbleached teeth (p<0.05). Conclusion: All bleaching protocols reduced the fracture resistance of endodontically-treated teeth, but there were no differences between each other. .

ABSTRACT

Objective: To address the association of dietary vitamins, anthropometric profile, lipid profile, antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation in hypertensive participant compared with normotensive healthy controls. Methods:in both hypertensive participants and normotensive age-sex matched healthy controls. The associated changes in serum antioxidants and lipid peroxidation were also assessed along with lipid profile and anthropometric measurements in both groups of subjects under study. Results:Dietary intake of vitamins was assessed by 131 food frequency questionnaire items B2 and ascorbic acid compared to normotensive controls. Anthropometric variables in the hypertensive showed significant differences in weight, body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-hip ratio and mid-arm circumference. The total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride were significantly higher (P<0.001) in hypertensive except high-density lipoprotein cholesterol which was significantly higher (P<0.001) in normotensive. The serum endogenous antioxidants and enzyme antioxidants were significantly decreased in hypertensive except serum albumin levels compared to normotensive along with concomitant increase in serum lipoprotein (a) malondialdehyde and conjugated diene levels. Dietary vitamins intake was higher in hypertensive participants excepting for vitamin Conclusions: Based on the observations, our study concludes that hypertension is caused due to interplay of several confounding factors namely anthropometry, lipid profile, depletion of endogenous antioxidants and rise in oxidative stress.

ABSTRACT

The combination of techniques for vital and non-vital tooth bleaching requires the establishment of a working protocol for each patient. This article shows a case report where different techniques of dental bleaching were used, both for non-vital and vital teeth, supported by the existing literature. The aim of this working protocol was to provide a treatment with minimal risk of external cervical resorption, dental hipersensitivity and control of the final shade in the different dental substrates.

ABSTRACT

Diabete mellitus (DM) is a multifactorial disease that affects several body systems, with vasculacomplications and tissue damage. Several biochemical mechanisms are hypothetically implicated in the induction of the late complications of diabete, such as the action of free radicals, glucose metabolism by the polyol pathway and non-enzymatic glycation of proteins. The aim of this study was to correlate the lipid profile and lipid peroxidation in diabetic subjects. An analysis of the lipid profile of 30 diabetic patients, with an average of 4 years since diagnosis. We analyzed the concentration of glucose, total cholesterol, HDLc, LDLc, VLDLc, triglycerides, glycated hemoglobin and lipid peroxidation (TBARS). Oxidative damage (TBARS) showed a strong correlation with the concentration of triglycerides, total cholesterol and VLDLc, and a weak correlation with LDLc cholesterol and HDLc. The strong correlation found between lipid peroxidation and the lipid profile of these patients reinforces the need to monitor plasma lipids in order to prevent late complications associated with diabete.

ABSTRACT

O grupo 4 apresentou a menor média (135,37 KHN).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of external bleaching agents on the microhardness of human enamel after its prolonged use. Twenty intact human third molars were submitted to mesio-distal crosscut and embedded in polystyrene resin. The specimens were submitted to finish, and half of the enamel surface of each specimen was covered with cosmetic varnish, representing the control group (G0 ? did not receive bleaching agents). The sample was divided into four groups (n=10): G1 ? one bleaching session with 16% carbamide peroxide; G2 ? three bleaching sessions with 16% carbamide peroxide; G3 ? one bleaching session with 22% carbamide peroxide; and G4 ? three bleaching sessions with 22% carbamide peroxide. Each session lasted 8 hours a day over the course of two weeks, with 45 days interval between G2 and G4 sessions. During this period, the specimens were kept in artificial saliva at 37°C. Then, the Knoop hardness test was done on the middle third of each bleached and non-bleached surface. The data were submitted to analysis of variance (two-way ANOVA), Tukey?s test (p< 0.05) and Dunnet test for comparison to G0, which showed the highest superficial hardness averages, differing statistically from the other groups (306.69 KHN). Group 4 showed the lowest average (135.37 KHN). It was concluded that bleaching reduced enamel hardness. Furthermore, increasing of carbamide peroxide (22%) associated with an increased number of sessions (3 sessions) enhanced the decrease in microhardness.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this review was to evaluate the effects of bleaching agents on composite restorations. Publications were searched in PubMed and Lilacs databases and the analyzed papers were published between 2002 and 2012. The bleaching agents evaluated were the hydrogen peroxide and the carbamide peroxide in different concentrations and techniques. The main characteristics of the composite resins were microhardness, roughness and color. The literature review revealed that most of the changes in the surface hardness of the composite occur due to the action of peroxides on the resin matrix of the restorative material. It was also observed that bleaching agents increase the surface roughness of composite resin restorations, and this effect was dependent on the concentration and composition of the bleaching agent used, the chemical characteristics of the composite resin and the period of the treatment. Finally, the color of the restorative material can also be changed after its contact with peroxides. It can be concluded that bleaching agents change the physical characteristics of composite resin restorations.
