ABSTRACT

The state of Punjab is facing a major threat of ecological, agrarian as well as emerging health crisis. Continuously depleting water tables due to unregulated use of irrigation water and increased cultivation of water-thirsty, varieties of rice are posing major threat to water availability in the state. Indiscriminate use of chemicals in farming leading to soil infertility, polluted surface waters and air pollution are contributing to ecological catastrophe and eventually leading to many health problems in the population. Hence there is need to focus on environmentally friendly, economically viable and health benefitting solutions. Millets as climate change compliant crops score highly over other grains in terms of marginal growing conditions and high nutritional value are proposed as a solution for emerging challenges in Punjab.

ABSTRACT

The National Medical Council (NMC) has mandated that all post-graduate training shall be competency-based, following the principles of Competency. Based Medical Education (CBME). This aims to serve the dual purpose of standardizing ophthalmology post-graduate training and to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional curriculum by employing innovative and interactive teaching–learning and assessment techniques to produce competent ophthalmologists well equipped with clinical, surgical, and professional skills relevant to current times. CBME marks a paradigm shift from traditional curriculum methodologies and involves the introduction of several new concepts. This article aims to highlight the key principles of CBME and the various teaching–learning and assessment technique methodologies which can be employed for post-graduate training. It also highlights the various challenges that are likely to be faced in its implementation and measures to overcome them.

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Medical education in surgery is undergoing transformation as a result of the incorporation of pedagogical strategies in its teaching-assistance processes. However, there is a limitation of the professors to respond to the current educational needs of a specialization program in surgery. Studies on the subject have identified points of intervention in teaching skills, with a new conception of a professor of surgery.Methods. The expected attributes in a high-quality professor of surgery were analyzed from a critical point of view and from the resident's perspective. Discussion. The roles of a professor of surgery were characterized, in accordance with the usual clinical and surgical activity, their qualities, and expected impact as a generator of a change in technical and non-technical skills of a medical professional in specialization. Likewise, a theoretical approach to the teaching-learning process of surgery was carried out, as well as the construction of its teaching identity, and the pedagogical scope of a professor of surgery today. Conclusions. The profile of the general surgeon has changed and professors of surgery must rise to this challenge. The new educational models favor a positive impact on postgraduate courses and on the resident's perception of their training process. However, a reconfiguration of the teacher is necessary, within a context of the exercise of surgery and its social responsibility. The academic programs are required to promote teacher development in order to raise the level of the future surgeon.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To comprehensively understand the operational status and existing problems of the neurosurgery professional training bases for standardized residency training in Guangdong Province. Methods:According to the scoring rules of "Standardized Residency Training Evaluation Indicators—Surgery (Neurosurgery) Professional Base" formulated by the Post-Graduation Medical Education Neurosurgery Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, 28 training bases were supervised and evaluated. The scoring results of the supervision of 28 neurosurgery training bases were collected, and the training bases were divided into two categories according to the traditional teaching history, 6 affiliated hospitals of traditional medical schools and 22 non-traditional affiliated/teaching hospitals. GraphPad 5.0 software was used for statistical analysis of the 14 core indicators, and t-test, variance analysis and Chi-square test were used for analysis. Results:The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference in the compliance rate of 14 core indicators between traditional teaching hospitals and non-traditional teaching hospitals ( P = 0.003), skill operation and type and number of surgeries ( P = 0.041) and student rotation plan ( P = 0.012). The differences were also statistically significant. Conclusion:This study reveals that the comprehensive management ability of training bases in traditional teaching hospitals is significantly better than that in non-traditional teaching hospitals. Additionally, it's suggested to strengthen the construction of professional bases, enhance the institutionalized management of bases, and thus realize the homogenization training of neurosurgery residents.

ABSTRACT

Background@#Technology has been a vital part of the 21st-century classroom. Because of these fast-changing innovations, this study focused on the relationship between computer self-efficacy, knowledge, and use of Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK). @*Objectives@#The study determined the perceived levels of computer self-efficacy and the perceived levels of knowledge (TPACK) among faculty members pursuing post-graduate degree programs, described the use of TPACK as reflected in their actual instructional designs, and determined the correlation between computer self-efficacy, knowledge, and use of TPACK.@*Methodology@#This study was conducted in one government graduate school in Manila, Philippines. The “Computer Self-efficacy Scale” developed by Teoh and Koh in 2010 was administered. TPACK was measured by administering the Survey of Preservice Teachers' Knowledge of Teaching and Technology by Schmidt et al. in 2009. @*Results@#Results showed that faculty members perceive that they have almost a high self-efficacy in terms of basic computer skills. In terms of TPACK, faculty members were observed to be only neutral in knowing technological knowledge. Correlations found were among the subconstructs of Computer Self-efficacy and the TPACK framework, although their relationship cannot be further explored due to limitations of data gathered. @*Conclusion@#Not all computer skills aid the learning experience. For example, results show that using skills like using word processors do not necessarily correlate with methods of teaching. It is recommended to perform a more in-depth analysis of the instructional designs and proficiency in web-based instructions to obtain correlations between constructs.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The consequences of the Covid-19 epidemic have been catastrophic for Latin America in 2021. This study explores experiences, lessons learned, and practice changes during this critical time in post-graduate medical education in Latin America. Me-thods: A panel of 53 post-graduate medical education leaders from 8 Latin American countries and Canada was invited to participate in the 2021 Latin American Medical Education Leaders Forum to share their experiences, lessons learned, and main educational practice changes given the Covid-19 pandemic scenario. Participants were selected following a snowball technique with the goal of obtaining a diverse group of experts. Small group discussions were conducted by bilingual facilitators based on a semi-structured questionnaire. The plenary session with the main conclusions of each group was recorded and fully transcribed for a thematic analysis using a framework methods approach. Results: Participants ́ profiles included 13 experienced clinician-educators, 19 program directors, and 23 deans or organizational representatives. Seven specific themes emerged. They followed a pattern that went from an initial emotional reaction of surprise to a complex collective response. The responses highlighted the value of adaptability, the application of new digital skills, a renovated residents' protagonism, the strengthening of humanism in medicine, the openness of new perspectives in wellness, and finally, an unresolved challenge of assessment in medical education in a virtual post-pandemic scenario. Conclusion: A diverse panel of medical educators from Latin America and Canada identified changes triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic that could transform postgraduate medical education in the region.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

This is an experience report, based on the recommendations that call to close the gap between health education and the reality of populations in vulnerable situations, from the perspective of a residence worker, about the internship experience in the Xukuru do Ororubá Indigenous Territory (Pernambuco/Brazil). The observations emerged regarding the living and health conditions of the indigenous people, the internship pedagogical process and its repercussions on professional training and practice, as well as the weaknesses related to the coverage and longitudinality of oral health care. It was possible to improve the socio-political glance at the indigenous issue through interventions from the perspective of subject autonomy. The potentiality of the proposal is evident, stimulating the confrontation between established professional knowledge and the objective reality of the communities, seeking to overcome the colonial model of care, expanding the perspective of professional training for the Brazilian National Health System (SUS).
