ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo compare the characteristics of adult and juvenile callers at high risk of suicide from psychological assistance hotline, to screen factors influencing the crisis intervention effect, so as to develop specific intervention programs for different age groups on psychological assistance hotline. MethodsFrom January 2021 to June 2021, a total of 2 229 callers at high risk for suicide were recruited from Beijing psychological assistance hotline. The selected individuals were divided into adult group (n=1 344) and juvenile group (n=885). Callers were interviewed by the hotline operators. Their general information, suicidal ideation, socio-psychological characteristics and chief complaints were recorded and compared between two groups. Before and after hotline crisis interventions, psychological distress, suicidal ideation intensity and hope level of the callers were assessed, and the improvements in the three assessed dimensions were compared between two groups. Then Logistic regression was adopted to compare the crisis intervention effects on three dimensions and their associated factors. ResultsCompared with adult group, juvenile group reported higher rates of family relationship problems, learning problems, history of suicide attempts and fear of assault, with statistically significant differences (χ2=55.604, 24.706, 41.944, 106.527, P<0.01). After hotline crisis intervention, the proportion of callers with increased level of hope was larger in juvenile group than that in adult group (42.74% vs. 30.97%, χ2=26.042, P<0.01). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that the chances of improvement in psychological distress for major depressive disorder (OR=0.650, 95% CI: 0.510~0.827), the chances of improvement in the level of hope for those with substance dependents (OR=0.550, 95% CI: 0.327~0.926), and the chances of improvement in the intensity of suicidal ideation for those with stressful life events (OR=0.565, 95% CI: 0.328~0.973) were all higher in juvenile group than those in adult group after crisis intervention. ConclusionAmong the callers at high risk for suicide from psychological assistance hotline, adult callers are more concerned about extra-familial relationships, work and economic problems, while juvenile callers are more concerned about family relationship and learning problems. Furthermore, the effect of crisis intervention in juvenile callers is less affected by major depressive disorder, substance use problems and stressful life events.

ABSTRACT

@#Orthodontic treatment for dentofacial deformity is fundamental throughout the entire management process of cleft lip and palate. Orthodontist is one of those who are indispensable in the comprehensive multidisciplinary cleft team. Cleft lip and palate patients have unique dentofacial characteristics which makes the treatment goals and strategies different from those of other patients in different stages. For newborns with cleft lip and palate, the main treatment includes presurgical orthopedics. For patients in their primary dentition stage, the treatment mainly focuses on the prevention of bad oral habits and severe malocclusion. For those in their mixed dentition stage, the treatment mainly consists of dentition preparation for alveolar bone grafting and skeletal growth modification. For patients in their permanent dentition stage, treatment strategies include orthodontic camaflouge treatment, combined orthodontic-orthognathic approach and segmental alveolar distraction osteogenesis. In addition to routine orthodontic treatment, orthodontists should pay special attention to managing the compliance of cleft lip and palate patients with unique psychological characteristics. By summarizing the state-of-art cleft lip and palate orthodontic care in the multidisciplinary team, this review aims to involve more orthodontic clinicians to join in the modern biopsychosocial medical practice of cleft lip and palate team approach and to improve the standard of care for cleft lip and palate patients.

ABSTRACT

Optimism and competitiveness are presented as two important variables to study in order to understand the psychological characteristics associated with the highest performance. This study attempts to analyze the differences in optimism and competitiveness in relation to: whether or not to sport practice, competitive level, age category, and sex. To do this, the Spanish version of LOT-R (Otero, Luengo, Romero, Gómez and Castro, 1998) and Competitivity-10 (Remor, 2007) questionnaires were applied to a sample of 148 athletes (75 men and 73 women) and 58 non-athletes (22 men and 36 women) with ages ranging from 14 to 17 years. As far as the optimism trait is concerned, the results indicate that athletes are more optimistic than non-athletes. There were no differences in relation to the competition level. The older high performance athletes were, the more optimistic they were compared to their younger counterparts, with males being more optimistic than females. With regard to competitiveness, high performance athletes are more competitive than amateur athletes. There were no differences in relation to age category, with males being more competitive than women. It is concluded that optimism is a construct mainly associated with the sport practice, while competitiveness discriminates athlete competitive level.

ABSTRACT

Are assessed goal orientations in physical education of Mexican students and differences by sex, age, involvement in regular exercise and practice level? Self- administered questionnaire about habitual physical activity was administered in 1083 high school Mexican students (12/16 years; error ± 3%, CI = 95.5%) using a multistage sampling stratification by proportional affix and by conglomerates. Factor analysis confirmatory supported the hypothesized theoretical model of two factors for TEOSQ-12EF showing excellent goodness of fit of the original model. Both boys and girls have primarily a task orientation, with boys more ego-oriented than girls. With increasing levels of physical activity, increases task and ego orientations.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Several psychological characteristics of medical students were investigated, the relationhip between these characteristics and academic achievement was identified, and futhermore some significant predictors of their academic achievement were explored. METHOD: Subjects were a total of 489 medical students, 1st, 2nd, 3rd year in Chosun university as of in 1998. We administered self-report questionnaires including age, sex, grade failure, and transfer experience. And Beck Depression Inventory, Achievement Self-Discrepancy Scale, Self-Efficacy Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(state) Test Anxiety Scale, and the Inventory of Performance Anxiety were handed out to them on April 1998. After the semester, we examined the academic achievement according to grade point average. Pearson's correlations were calculated to explore the relationships between grade failure and other psychological variables, as well as the relationships between academic achievement and other psychological variables. The amount that academic achievement was explained by the psychological variables was obtained using multiple regression analysis. RESULT: 1)In 489 students, grade failure was 168(34.3%) non-failure was 321(65.7%) and transfer was 33(6.7%) 2)While G.P.A., performance anxiety, and self-efficacy, respectively, were negatively correlated with the failure, test anxiety was positively correlated with the grade failure. There were no statistically significant correlations between grade failure and depression, self-discrepancy, or state anxiety. 3)Academic achievement was positively correlated with both gender and self-efficacy, whereas it was negatively correlated with depression, self-discrepancy, test anxiety, and state anxiety, respectively. Female students were better than males in academic achievement. 4)The amount that age, gender, grade failure, transfer, depression, self-discrepancy, test anxiety, state anxiety, performance anxiety, and self-efficacy accounted for academic achievement was 10.86% totally. CONCLUSION: Gender, grade failure, and depression in medical students affected their academic achievement significantly.
