ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness and future implications of COVID?related risk stratification for managing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Methods: A prospective study was conducted at a tertiary eye care center from the beginning of the lockdown in India from 23 March 2020 till the end of the first phase of lockdown on 29 May 2020. We evaluated 200 prematurely born infants (< 34 weeks of gestational age) using the new safety guideline protocols for low?risk babies developed in conjunction with the Indian ROP Society for care during the COVID?19 pandemic. Low risk included babies born at more than 30 weeks of gestational age, post menstrual age 34 weeks or above at presentation, more than 1000 grams of birth weight, and stable systemically with good weight gain. Results: New guidelines were implemented in 106 (53%) infants who were low risk while 94 (47%) infants with high risk were followed up as per the old guidelines. Out of the 106 infants (212 eyes) managed by the new guidelines, good outcome (group 1) was seen in 102 (96.2%) infants. Twenty?seven of the 102 infants had some form of ROP and 5 of these infants needed treatment. None of the low?risk babies with no detachment at presentation managed by new guidelines required surgery later (group 2). Two (1.9%) infants came with retinal detachment at presentation and underwent successful surgery (group 3) and two infants (1.9%) were lost to follow up. Conclusion: New risk stratification during the COVID?19 pandemic was an efficient and safe strategy in managing low?risk ROP babies.

ABSTRACT

The safety committee has been undertaking activities, such as conducting regular workshops at the annual congresses, managing the "Safety Measures Website for Acupuncture and Moxibustion," researching the literature, conducting multicenter prospective studies on acupuncture and moxibustion-related adverse events, collecting information about medical accidents involving acupuncture and moxibustion in Japan, addressing the media pertaining to false information regarding the safety of acupuncture and moxibustion, and formulating the Safety Guidelines for Japanese Acupuncture and Moxibustion Practice. At the 71st annual Tokyo congress workshop, activities conducted over the past decade were summarized. Regarding the studies on acupuncture and moxibustion-related adverse events, a literature review of reports concerning acupuncture- and moxibustion-associated adverse events published globally from 2004 to 2019 was introduced. Furthermore, the results of a multicenter prospective study conducted by the safety committee were also introduced. Additionally, the Safety Guidelines for Japanese Acupuncture and Moxibustion Practice were introduced, and the results of a questionnaire survey determining the degree of recognition of these guidelines were simultaneously reported. Moreover, regarding future developments, plans to create and publish a safety manual for acupuncture and moxibustion (provisional name) were reported. In the second half of the workshop, reports on the past cases of needle breakage and retained needles were introduced under the topic "precautions and preventive measures regarding needle breakage and retained needles." Furthermore, the number of needle breakage claims filed under the liability insurance of acupuncture and moxibustion practitioners was reported. These details demonstrate that despite the common use of single-use acupuncture needles, accidents involving needle breakage still exist. Lastly, measures for reducing the difficulty in needle removal and preventing needle breakage were summarized, and opinions on the same were exchanged with the participants.

ABSTRACT

General measures for infection prevention and control should be followed by the health care workers as the world struggles to control Covid-19 spread. Medical professionals and researchers continue to fight with the recent global outbreak of Covid-19 and its potential impact on blood transfusion services is real and a cause of concern for transfusion medicine experts. The 2002 - 03 SARS outbreak saw 8098 reported cases resulting in 774 deaths, and a 9% mortality rate.(1) The mortality rates for the same spiked to 50% for individuals over the age of 60. It is accepted that the present Covid-19 outbreak originated in bats. As per the American Association of Blood banks (AABB).(2) There is no reported or suspected case of transfusion transmitted Covid-19.(3,4,5) Similarly, in India there is no reported case of transfusion transmission. Social distancing of blood donors is of paramount importance for blood donors while blood collection. Similarly, organizing of blood donation camps by organisers and blood bank staff should ensure the same. Facilities for hand washing for blood donors and use of mask should be ensured. Blood donation by blood donors with travel history should be deferred for 28 days.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To demonstrate whether complying with the ''International Safety Guidelines for the Patient'' can decrease the frequency of complaints and/or claims. Setting: General Hospital of Mexico. Design: Observational, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study. Statistical analysis: Percentages as summary measure for qualitative variables. Material and methods: We evaluated the complaints and claims related to the general surgery service and handled by the legal department from January 2008 to October 2009 that required expert advice from a third arbitrator, and which occurred before applying the International Safety Guidelines for the Patient. We assessed the specific cause of the complaints and whether these could have or not been prevented by applying the Safety Guidelines. Results: During the studied period, eight third arbitrator revisions were required related to general surgery. If the Safety Guidelines had been applied, 50% of the complaints could have been avoided. The fourth guideline that warrants that surgery be performed in the right place, use of the correct procedure, and the correct patient stands out above the other guidelines in cases related to general surgery to avoid complaints. Conclusion: Adequate application of the International Safety Guidelines for the Patient is instrumental in detecting failures related to medical care.

ABSTRACT

This review is about the improved technology of the retort processing of food and food safety guidelines”. The retort processing of food is a process of terminal thermal sterilization of pouched packed ready to eat food. Food is prepared by conventional method and then it is packed in the retort pouch available for different types of food. Finally these pouches are sterilized by using “Retort Process Sterilizers”. By using this technology, food can be made available for long time consumption without any harmful effects. Food industry follows various guidelines for the food quality & safety aspects. The main guidelines regarding food are Food Safety and Standard Act, Food Adulteration Act, HACCP Concept, ISO (FSMS) Concept and USFDA: Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM).
