ABSTRACT

Objective:To understand the school absence due to illnesses in the context of emergency response to COVID-19 in Minhang District, so as to provide a basis for epidemic prevention and control in primary and secondary schools. Methods:Descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the data of school absence due to illnesses in primary and secondary schools in Minhang District in the context of emergency response to COVID-19. Results:During the period of emergency response to COVID-19, the incidence of illness-induced absenteeism in Minhang District was 1.50%. Difference in absenteeism between different months was statistically significant (χ2=1 724.31, P<0.01). The monthly absenteeism rate in 2020 was higher than that from 2016 to 2019, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01). The rate of symptom-induced absenteeism was 1.28%. Fever was the most common symptom of school absence, and the rate of absence due to fever in 2020 was higher than that of the same period in 2019 and 2016-2018, and the difference was statistically significant (χ2=15 281.33, P<0.01). Acute upper respiratory tract infection was the number one cause of illness-induced absence during the emergency response period, while infectious diseases were the primary causes of diseases from 2016 to 2018 and in 2019. The difference of infectious disease absence in different years was statistically significant (χ2=1 822.62, P<0.01). Conclusion:The rate of school absence due to illnesses increased significantly in the context of emergency response to COVID-19 in Minhang District, while the rate of school absence due to infectious diseases decreased significantly. The prevention and control measures during the epidemic period can be used for reference in the future for preventing infectious diseases under normal conditions.

Background: Despite the strides made in the field of adolescent and women health, menstrual problems remain a stigma. Unsatisfactory menstrual hygiene practices have a profound influence on the adolescent girl’s health and academic performance. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the relationship between school absenteeism and poor MHM and its impacts on school girl’s day to day lives.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted among 384 adolescent girls enrolled in anganwadi centres of the urban slum of Madhya Pradesh from January to June 2018. A pre-designed and pretested questionnaire used to collect the data regarding menstrual hygiene practices and school absenteeism. Data were analyzed using the SPSS software (version 16.0. Chicago, SPSS Inc.).Results: The study found that around two-thirds (64.3%) and nearly one third (30%) of the participants were using a simple cloth and sanitary pads. About half (50.6%) of the respondents miss their school during the menstruation. Majority of them perceived that menstruation interferes with their school performance. The main reason for missing the schools was fear/ shame of leakage. In multivariable regression lack of sanitary facilities and painful menstruation remained significant predictors of school absenteeism.Conclusions: There is a dire need to fortify efforts directed towards increasing awareness on menstrual hygiene, to revamp the existing measures for improving menstrual health of the adolescent girls. Focused attention is warranted by policymakers to improve the quality of life of this vulnerable group.

Background: School absenteeism is a considerable problem generally related to higher dropout rates, poor academic achievement and school lag. This study determined the frequency and causes of overall and illness-related absenteeism of students in rural schools from two Colombian municipalities. Methods: A prospective and descriptive study was conducted in a population of 948 school children from 34 rural schools. Absenteeism data were collected for 2013 academic year consisted of the number of students registered and absent by grade, school, day and reason for absence. Absence rates (overall and illness-related absenteeism) were recorded, based on full or partial days absence, measured both as episodes, and accumulating the number of days. Results: From the students included in the study, 55.1% were male and 71.6% were between 5 and 9 years old. The overall absence rate was 5.7 episodes per child-year (95% confidence interval 5.5 to 5.8) and 8.6 days per child-year (8.4 to 8.9). The main reasons for non-attendance were illness (24.4%), medical or dental check-up (12.9%), travel (12.3%), lack of motivation to attend school (10.0%) and bad weather (9.3%). The illness- related absence rate was 1.4 episodes per child-year (95% confidence interval 1.3 to 1.5) and 2.5 days per child-year (2.4 to 2.6). The main reasons for illness-related absence were cold (37.0%), nonspecific fever (10.9%) and stomach pain or vomiting (8.4%). Conclusions: In this study, the most common reasons for non-attendance were illness-related. The importance of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in absenteeism was evident, showing rates similar to other urban school studies. Then, the results of this study provide knowledge on the magnitude and reasons for absenteeism in rural schoolchildren.


Antecedentes. El ausentismo escolar es un problema importante relacionado con altas tasas de abandono escolar, bajo rendimiento académico y rezago escolar. Este estudio determinó la frecuencia y las causas del ausentismo general y el ausentismo relacionado con la enfermedad en estudiantes de escuelas rurales de dos municipios de Colombia. Métodos. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo en una población de 948 escolares de 34 escuelas rurales. Los datos de ausentismo recopilados para el año 2013 consistieron en el número de episodios y días de ausentismo por grado y motivo de ausencia general y por enfermedad. Se calcularon las tasas de ausentismo general y por enfermedad. Resultados. El 55,1% de la población participante eran hombres y el 71,6% tenían entre 5 y 9 años. La tasa de ausentismo general fue 5,7 episodios por niño-año, IC 95% (5,5-5,8) y 8,6 días por niño-año, IC 95% (8,4-8,9). Las principales razones del ausentismo fueron enfermedades (24,4%), chequeo médico u odontológico (12,9%), viajes (12,3%), falta de motivación para asistir a la escuela (10,0%) y mal clima (9,3%). La tasa de ausentismo por enfermedad fue 1,4 episodios por niño-año IC 95% (1,3-1,5) y 2,5 días por niño-año IC 95% (2,4-2,6). Las principales razones del ausentismo por enfermedad fueron el resfriado común (37,0%), la fiebre inespecífica (10,9%) y el dolor de estómago o vómito (8,4%). Conclusiones. Las razones más comunes para la no asistencia estuvieron relacionadas con la enfermedad. La importancia de las infecciones respiratorias y gastrointestinales en el absentismo fue evidente, mostrando tasas similares a las de otros estudios en escuelas urbanas. Los resultados de este estudio proporcionan conocimiento sobre la magnitud y las razones del absentismo en la población escolar rural.

Resultados. 55,1% da população participante eram crianças masculinas do primeiro grau, 71,6% entre 5 e 9 anos de idade. A taxa geral de absentismo foi de 5,7 episódios por criança-ano, IC95% (5,5-5,8) e 8,6 dias por criança-ano, IC95% (8,4-8,9). Os principais motivos do não comparecimento foram doenças (24,4%), check-up médico ou odontológico (12,9%), viagens (12,3%), falta de motivação para frequentar a escola (10,0%) e mau tempo (9,3%). A taxa de absentismo da doença foi de 1,4 episódios por IC95% criança-ano (1,3-1,5) e 2,5 dias por IC95% criança-ano (2,4-2,6). Os principais motivos da ausência de doença foram resfriado comum (37,0%), febre inespecífica (10,9%) e dor de estômago ou vômito (8,4%). Conclusões. Os motivos mais comuns de não comparecimento foram relacionados à doença. A importância das infecções respiratórias e gastrointestinais no absenteísmo foi evidente, mostrando taxas semelhantes às de outros estudos em escolas urbanas. Os resultados deste estudo fornecem informações sobre a magnitude e as razões para evasão escolar na população escolar rural.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Mumps is a self-limiting viral infection of the salivary glands with systemic manifestations and complications. It primarily affects young children, with increased incidence in winter and spring. Mumps infection is endemic in developing countries because of poor vaccination coverage. This study is intended to highlight the increased number of mumps cases in children attending tertiary care center in Nepal and thus to emphasize the importance of mumps vaccination, so as to decrease the disease occurrence and disease burden by vaccinating all children. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study done in Civil Service Hospital of Nepal over a period of 2 years from November 2009 to October 2011. All children less than 14years of age with symptoms of fever and parotid swelling were included in the study group. A detailed history pertaining to the disease was taken, that included; history of exposure and prior vaccination against mumps. Children were asked to follow up either after 5 days or in case of noticing any signs and symptoms of complication. Results: There were total 113 cases diagnosed clinically as mumps of which there were 71 males (62.83%) and 42 females (37.16%) with the peak incidence of disease in the month of March and September with 22 cases (19.46%) in each month. The increase incidence was seen in 4-6 years of age with 58 cases (51.32%). There were 70 patients (61.94%) that had history of exposure to mumps infection. All the patients in this study had either unilateral or bilateral parotitis. None of the children were vaccinated against mumps. And all the school going children had to be off school for a period of 3-5 days. Conclusion: There were large number of children with mumps and none of them were vaccinated. Child can be prevented from the infection by vaccination and thus avoiding possible sufferings and complications. Thus we recommend the use of mumps vaccination in Routine immunization programme.

Objectives: To determine the magnitude of absenteeism and its correlates and to develop a model to predict absenteeism in school children. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: Three government schools in Delhi. Participants: 704 students, aged 10 to15 years. Methods: Students were registered and interviewed using a pre-designed questionnaire. The frequency and causes of school absenteeism were ascertained by school records, leave applications and one month’s recall. The factors were subjected to univariate analysis and a stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis and a predictive model was developed. Results: The average absenteeism of a student over 6 months was 14.3±10.2 days (95% CI 13.5-15.0). 48% children absented themselves for more than two days per month on an average. The main factors associated with school absenteeism were younger age, male sex, increasing birth order, lower levels of parental education and income, school truancy, school phobia and family reasons. The discriminating ability of the predictive model developed was 92.4%. Conclusions: It is possible to identify potential absentees in school children.
