ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT We present a rare case of primary caruncle basal cell carcinoma (BCC), a condition with limited occurrences. Our patient, an 80-year-old woman without prior ocular pathological history, presented a 2x2mm pedunculated blackish nodular lesion on the caruncle of her left eye, without local conjunctival or cutaneous involvement. Histological analysis following complete excision confirmed the presence of basal cell carcinoma within the caruncle. Over a span of 30 months, no recurrence has been observed. While scant cases are documented in the literature, we conducted a review of these instances. Despite its infrequent manifestation, this condition should be taken into account when evaluating caruncular tumors, given its tendency to invade the orbit. Complete excision with free surgical margins is the treatment of choice, and adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy might be considered.

Objetivo: El carcinoma sebáceo (CS) es una neoplasia infrecuente, de la cual no existen reportes nacionales, ni guías de manejo en Chile. El Instituto Nacional del Cáncer (INC) es un centro de referencia nacional en el manejo de patologías oncológicas; el objetivo de este trabajo es describir la experiencia y tratamiento del carcinoma sebáceo en nuestro centro. Material y Método: Se realizó una revisión retrospectiva, descriptiva, de fichas clínicas entre marzo de 2016 y marzo de 2022 en el INC, en las cuales la biopsia definitiva fuese confirmatoria de CS. Resultados: Se reclutaron 10 pacientes, 6 hombres (60%) y 4 mujeres. Edad promedio fue de 62,9 años ± 18,7 DS. En el 80% de los casos el tumor se encontró en cabeza y cuello y solo 2 casos fueron CS ocular (20%). 4 pacientes tenían asociación al Síndrome de Muir-Torre (SMT) (40%), en el 100% de la muestra se realizó tratamiento quirúrgico con resección oncológica y control de márgenes intraoperatorio, utilizándose en solo 3 casos la técnica Cirugía Micrográfica de Mohs (MMS). En 4 pacientes (40%) se realizó biopsia de linfonodo centinela (BLNC), de los cuales ninguno resulto positivo para metástasis. Ningún paciente presento recidiva local, después de la cirugía y no hubo casos de mortalidad a causa de CS. Ningún paciente recibió radioterapia, quimioterapia o inmunoterapia adyuvante, solo 1 paciente recibió braquiterapia (BT) adyuvante. Conclusión: El CS es una patología compleja e infrecuente, que requiere un tratamiento multidisciplinario y cuyo pilar es la cirugía.


Objective: Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is an infrequent neoplasm, without national reports nor management guidelines in Chile. National Cancer Institute (NCI) is a reference center for this kind of disease. The aim of this research is to describe the experience and treatment of the sebaceous carcinoma in our center. Methods: A retrospective, descriptive review of clinical records was performed, between March 2016 and March 2022 at the INC, in which the definitive biopsy was confirmatory of CS. Results: A total of 10 patients were enrolled; 6 male (60%) and 4 women. The mean age was 62.9 years ± 18.7 (SD). 80% of the cases were located at the head or the cervical area and only 2 cases were found in the ocular region (20%). Association with SMT (40%) was found in 4 patients. Surgical treatment with oncological resection and intraoperative assessment of margins was performed in 100% of the cases, using MMS technique. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (BLNC) was performed in 4 patients (40%), of which none had metastasis. No patient presented local recurrence after surgery and there were no cases of mortality due to CS. No patient received radiotherapy, chemotherapy or adjuvant immunotherapy. Just 1 received adjuvant brachytherapy. Conclusion: SC is a complex and infrequent disease, which requires multidisciplinary treatment mainly with surgery.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo reveal the differences of the related pathogenicity gene mutations between sebaceous adenocarcinoma (SC) of scalp and sebaceous adenoma (SA) of scalp on whole exome level. MethodsWhole exome sequencing was performed on a SC sample and a SA sample by Illumina Hiseq 2500 platform. Suspicious single nucleotide variation sites were selected for mutation conservation and functional analysis. SciClone was used to track subclone evolution and clonal map information was obtained for each tumor sample. The high-frequency significant gene mutations in the tumor sample were screened by MutSigCV software, and compared with the known driver genes. ResultsTwo driver genes TFDP1 and ACVR1B harboring mutations in scalp SC compared to SA were found. ConclusionsThe finding of mutation in driver genes TFDP1 and ACVR1B should be confirmed in a large cohort, which might reveal the mechanism of scalp SC development and find a therapeutic target for SC.

Abstract Background: Acquired smooth muscle hamartoma (ASMH) is a rare benign lesion characterized clinically by hyperpigmented plaques with hypertrichosis and some follicular papules. The main histologic finding is the presence of disorganized smooth muscle bundles in the dermis. Only 25 cases of ASMH have been reported in the literature. Clinical case: We present the case of an 18-year-old male who reported a pigmented area and increased hair growth on the left hemifacial with one year of evolution. Clinically, a plaque was observed in the preauricular region and on the left cheek with a linear Blaschkoid path, consisting of hyperpigmentation, hypertrichosis, and some papular lesions, with negative pseudo-Darier sign. Histological analysis showed an increase in the number of smooth muscle bundles in the middle and deep dermis surrounding abundant sebaceous glands and numerous hair follicles in different stages of evolution. Conclusions: The sebaceous component in this lesion was prominent. Therefore, we considered this lesion part of a spectrum where the acquired smooth muscle hamartoma and folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma are found at the extremes. This case would fall in the middle of the range, as it combines both histological features.


Resumen Introducción: El hamartoma de músculo liso adquirido (HMLA) es una lesión benigna adquirida, poco frecuente, caracterizada clínicamente por presentar placas hiperpigmentadas, con hipertricosis y algunas pápulas foliculares. El principal hallazgo histológico es la presencia de abundantes haces de músculo liso desorganizados en la dermis. Se han reportado solo 25 casos de HMLA en la literatura. Caso clínico: Se presenta el caso de un paciente de sexo masculino de 18 años que refirió una zona pigmentada y el aumento de vello en la hemicara izquierda con un año de evolución. Clínicamente se observó una placa en la región preauricular y mejilla izquierda con trayecto lineal blaschkoide, constituida por hiperpigmentación, hipertricosis y algunas lesiones papulares, con signo pseudo-Darier negativo. Histológicamente se encontró un aumento en el número de haces de músculo liso en la dermis media y profunda rodeando abundantes glándulas sebáceas, así como numerosos folículos pilosos en diferentes estadios de evolución. Conclusiones: El componente sebáceo en esta lesión fue muy marcado, por lo que se considera que forma parte de un espectro donde en los extremos se encuentran el hamartoma de músculo liso adquirido y el hamartoma quístico folículo sebáceo. El presente caso se encontraría en medio, ya que combina ambas características histológicas.

Abstract Background: Nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn is defined as a rare congenital malformation characterized as a non-hereditary hamartoma of the adnexal structures of the skin. Its etiology is not yet well understood, but it is believed to be related to post-zygotic mutations in the HRAS, NRAS and KRAS genes. Objective: To describe the clinical manifestation of nevus sebaceous, as well as the main management techniques addressed in the medical literature. Moreover, the present study discusses a case report of a congenital linear nevus in the left retroauricular region found in a male patient, without extracutaneous manifestations. Method: A narrative review of the literature was carried out. Discussion: Nevus sebaceous occurs as lesions with a linear or oval appearance, with a smooth or verrucous texture, generally alopecic and with very variable color. Moreover, nevus sebaceous is one of the components of the so-called linear nevus syndrome or Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims syndrome, which is associated with multisystemic complications. The treatment of the lesions is still controversial; however, most experts indicate surgical excision as the most frequently adopted treatment method, in addition to multidisciplinary follow-up when the diagnosis of Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims syndrome is established. Conclusion: The linear nevus syndrome constitutes a rare manifestation; however, its diagnosis should be considered in children born with nevus sebaceous. There is no consensus yet on the best therapy, but surgical removal has shown to be a viable option.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of vaginal cysts is uncertain since many go unreported but it is estimated that 1 out of 200 women have a vaginal cyst. We report a case of a 23-year-old female with secondary infertility with an incidental asymptomatic vaginal cyst, which was originally misdiagnosed as an endometriotic cyst. We performed the surgical treatment with negative hysterolaparoscopic findings, only to identify a paravaginal sebaceous cyst on vaginal exploration. Pathology results confirmed that the cyst wall was lined by stratified squamous keratinizing epithelium with a lumen containing lamellated keratin. The features were suggestive of epithelial inclusion cyst.

ABSTRACT

Syringocystadenoma papilliferum is a rare benign hamartomatous tumor arising from apocrine or eccrine sweat glands with a predilection for head and neck. Here we report a case of a 30 year old female who presented to our opd with a nodule over scalp since birth which turned into a hairless , exophytic pinkish growth with blood tinged discharge slowly over the last 2 years . A punch biopsy of the lesion revealed syringocystadenoma papilliferum. Excision of the lesion is performed and specimen is sent for (hpe) histopathological examination which revealed syringocystadenoma papilliferum with no malignant transformation. Post operative recovery was uneventful and the patient was followed up till 6 months with no history of recurrence.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To provide a retrospective analysis of lesions of the caruncle which have been very rarely reported in the literature. Methods: A retrospective review of all the caruncular lesions between January 2000 and January 2020 was done at a single tertiary eye care hospital. The lesions were classified as benign and malignant lesions. Clinicopathological correlation was done for the excised lesions. Results: A total of 87 caruncular lesions were included in the study. Males (59%) were affected more than females (41%). The mean age at presentation was 44 ± 20 years. The mean duration of complaint was 36 ± 62 months. A total of 36 patients underwent surgical excision whereas the rest opted for conservative management. Recurrence was noted in five patients. Fifteen different types of lesions were identified histopathologically. Benign lesions (78%) were far more common than malignant ones (22%). Epithelial inclusion cyst was the most common benign lesion and sebaceous gland carcinoma was the most common malignant lesion. Correct clinicopathological correlation was seen in 52.7% of the cases. Caruncular tuberculosis, oncocytoma, and basosquamous cell carcinoma were some of the rare lesions. Conclusion: Caruncular lesions are uncommon and very diverse, which makes clinical diagnosis challenging. Epithelial inclusion cyst and sebaceous gland carcinoma were the most common benign and malignant lesions respectively. Correct clinicopathological correlation was seen in more than half of the cases

ABSTRACT

Lynch syndrome or hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is a type of inherited cancer syndrome with a genetic predisposition to different types of cancer. There is an increased predisposition to cancers in the endometrium, colon, stomach, ovary, uterus, skin, kidney, and brain in patients of Lynch syndrome. We are reporting a 48-year-old male who presented with a pea-sized growth in his left arm which was found to be sebaceoma on histopathology. On further detailed history, examination, and genetic study, it was proved to be a familial case of Lynch syndrome. The case is being reported to stress the importance of knowledge about clinical manifestation, associated neoplasms, and molecular genetic profile of Lynch syndrome which will enable physicians and pathologists to provide highly targeted surveillance and management for patients with high cancer risk.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of direct cell injury of cryotherapy on eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma cells by an ex vivo cryotherapy experiment. Methods: It was a prospective interventional case series. Six patients with biopsy?proven nodular sebaceous gland carcinoma were included. After excision of the mass, a thin slice of the mass resembling the thickness of the conjunctiva was shaved off and was oriented over the broad end of a tissue forceps. Cryotherapy was applied to both its anterior and posterior aspects by the triple freeze?thaw technique. The mass was then labeled and sent separately for histopathological evaluation by fixation and staining. Results: A total of six patients with a mean age of 58.2 ± 15.5 years were included. There were four females and two males. The mean duration of the lesion was 21.6 ± 17.51 months. All patients had involvement of the upper eyelid. The patients were clinically staged as T2b (n=2), T1a (n=2), T2c (n=1), and T3a (n=1) respectively. There was no regional lymphadenopathy or metastasis in any of the cases. The experimental cryo?tissue containing the cryo?treated lesion revealed the presence of viable tumor cells (>50%) in all six specimens. Conclusion: The direct cell injury caused by cryotherapy may not be sufficient to kill all the residual sebaceous gland carcinoma cells on the tumor bed.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the effect of milk on sebum secretion in golden hamsters, and to explore its possible mechanism of action.Methods:Eighteen golden hamsters were randomly and equally divided into 3 groups: blank control group receiving no intervention, whole-milk group gavaged with whole milk, and skimmed-milk group gavaged with skimmed milk. The gavage feeding was performed at a dose of 2.5 ml twice a day for 4 consecutive weeks. The maximum transverse diameter and maximum longitudinal diameter of bilateral sebaceous gland spots were measured on days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 after the start of intervention, and the area of sebaceous gland spots was calculated; at 24 hours after the last gavage, bilateral sebaceous gland spot tissues were resected, and subjected to immunohistochemical study to determine the expression of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) /sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1) /acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACC-1) signaling pathway in sebaceous gland spots. Statistical analysis was carried out by using repeated measures analysis of variance, one-way analysis of variance for independent groups, Kruskal-Wallis H test, and least significant difference- t test for multiple comparisons. Results:Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that there was no significant difference in the area of sebaceous gland spots of golden hamsters among the 3 groups ( F= 0.96, P= 0.417) . The IGF-1 expression was significantly higher in the skimmed-milk group (0.39 ± 0.03) than in the blank control group (0.35 ± 0.03, t= 2.62, P= 0.021) and whole-milk group (0.33 ± 0.02, t= 3.82, P= 0.002) ; compared with the blank control group (0.36 ± 0.02) , the skimmed-milk group showed significantly increased SREBP-1 expression (0.42 ± 0.04, t= 2.64, P= 0.021) ; the ACC-1 expression was significantly higher in the skimmed-milk group (0.40 ± 0.03) and whole-milk group (0.40 ± 0.05) than in the blank control group (0.34 ± 0.03; t= 2.39, 2.47, P= 0.031, 0.026, respectively) . Conclusion:Milk may promote sebum secretion in golden hamsters through the IGF-1/SREBP-1/ACC-1 signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT Breast sebaceous carcinoma is one of the rarest breast neoplasms, with less than 30 cases reported worldwide. Due to the rarity, the new WHO classification of breast tumors grouped these tumors among the ductal carcinoma. A detailed description of these cases is relevant due to the insufficient knowledge about the prognosis of this neoplasm. We report the clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical characteristics of a case of sebaceous carcinoma of the breast in an 81-year-old woman with a right breast nodule. The tumor was composed of nests of a varying mixture of sebaceous cells with abundant slightly vacuolated cytoplasm, surrounded by smaller oval-to-fusiform cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm without vacuolization. No lymph node metastases were present. The immunohistochemical reactions were positive for GATA3, EMA, CD15, and GCDFP15 (focal staining), and negative for RE, RP, and HER-2. The tumor was classified as triple-negative. Morphologically, the differential diagnoses included skin sebaceous carcinoma, lipid-rich carcinoma, apocrine carcinoma, and glycogen-rich clear cell carcinoma. Most of the previously reported cases were positive for RE and RP, which generally was associated with a better prognosis. However, some cases presented a more aggressive behavior with distant and lymph node metastases.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Muir-Torre syndrome is a rare, autosomal dominant genodermatosis, characterized by sebaceous neoplasms and visceral carcinomas. The authors describe the case of a patient who, 16 years after the diagnosis of colon carcinoma, presented a verrucous plaque on the pubic region, histopathologically compatible with sebaceous adenoma. The need to investigate this syndrome is emphasized, especially in cases of sebaceous neoplasms located outside the head, face, and neck. Screening for neoplasms in these patients and their families is mandatory.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the effect of pomegranate peel polyphenols on sebum secretion in golden hamsters, and to explore its possible mechanisms.Methods:Thirty golden hamsters were randomly and equally divided into 5 groups: (ointment) vehicle group, 0.48%-, 0.96%-, 1.92%-pomegranate peel polyphenol ointment groups, and retinoic acid cream group. Corresponding cream or ointments were applied to bilateral sebaceous gland spots of the golden hamsters at a dose of 1 gram twice a day for 4 consecutive weeks. The area of bilateral sebaceous gland spots was measured on days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 after the start of treatment, which was calculated by the maximum longitudinal diameter multiplied by the maximum transverse diameter. Twenty-four hours after the last treatment, immunohistochemical study was conducted to determine the expression of AKT/Sox9 signaling pathway in sebaceous gland spots resected from the golden hamsters. The area of sebaceous gland spots in these groups at different time points was compared by repeated measures analysis of variance, and other data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance or Kruskal-Wallis H test. Results:The area of sebaceous gland spots was significantly smaller in the 0.96%-, 1.92%-pomegranate peel polyphenol ointment groups (50.48±2.41 mm 2, 48.24±2.56 mm 2, respectively) and retinoic acid cream group (48.31±2.76 mm 2) than in the vehicle group (57.99±3.29 mm 2; t=2.69, 3.98, 3.65, P=0.012, 0.001, 0.001, respectively) . Sox9 expression was significantly lower in the 1.92%-pomegranate peel polyphenol ointment group (0.39±0.04) and retinoic acid cream group (0.38±0.03) than in the vehicle group (0.44±0.02, P=0.040) . However, there was no significant difference in AKT expression among the 5 groups ( F=1.645, P=0.199) . Conclusion:Pomegranate peel polyphenols can reduce the sebaceous gland spot area and inhibit sebum secretion in golden hamsters, which may be related to the inhibition of Sox9 expression.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate clinical manifestations and histopathological features of and surgical timing for cerebriform sebaceous nevus.Methods:Clinical data were collected from 14 children with cerebriform sebaceous nevus in Beijing Children′s Hospital from June 2014 to December 2019, and clinical manifestations, histopathological features and surgical timing were analyzed retrospectively.Results:Of the 14 children, 10 were males and 4 were females. They presented with skin lesions at birth, which were solitary and located on the head and face. These skin lesions gave a cerebriform appearance, with an average diameter of 4.79 cm. Systemic examination showed no abnormality in any children. Histopathological examination showed obvious papillomatous epidermal hyperplasia, large number of mature sebaceous glands and immature hair follicles. The 14 children underwent surgeries at an average age of 1.94 years. No recurrence was observed during the follow-up of 6 months to 6 years after surgery.Conclusion:Cerebriform sebaceous nevus is characterized by a unique cerebriform appearance, mostly occurs on the head and face, and is liable to attract attention, which usually leads to an earlier surgical selection.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the effect of resveratrol on the expression of inflammatory cytokines and related genes in human SZ95 sebocytes induced by benzo (a) pyrene.Methods:Human SZ95 sebocytes were cultured in vitro, and divided into 4 groups: control group treated with 1‰ dimethyl sulfoxide for 27 hours, resveratrol group treated with 1 × 10 -5 mol/L resveratrol for 24 hours, benzo (a) pyrene group treated with 1 × 10 -5 mol/L benzo (a) pyrene for 3 hours, resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group treated with 1 × 10 -5 mol/L resveratrol for 24 hours followed by 1 × 10 -5 mol/L benzo (a) pyrene for 3 hours. Real-time fluorescence-based quantitative PCR was performed to determine the mRNA expression of interleukin (IL) -1α, IL-6, aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) , cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) and cytochrome P4501B1 (CYP1B1) in SZ95 sebocytes in the above groups; Western blot analysis was conducted to determine the phosphorylation level of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK, expressed as the ratio of phosphorylated to total p38 MAPK) and AhR protein expression; enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was conducted to detect levels of IL-1α and IL-6 in the cell culture supernatant in each group. One-way analysis of variance was used for comparison of means among multiple groups, and least significant difference- t test was used for multiple comparisons. Results:The mRNA and protein expression of IL-1α in SZ95 sebocytes significantly differed among the control group, resveratrol group, benzo (a) pyrene group and resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group (mRNA: 2.045 ± 0.272, 2.058 ± 0.154, 3.124 ± 0.094, 2.185 ± 0.337, protein: 9.132 ± 1.181, 9.429 ± 0.771, 20.361 ± 0.907, 9.917 ± 0.897, F=14.662, 101.705, P < 0.01, < 0.001, respectively) , and were significantly lower in the resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group than in the benzo (a) pyrene group (both P < 0.01) . In addition, the phosphorylation level of p38 was significantly higher in the benzo (a) pyrene group than in the control group, resveratrol group and resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group ( F=303.129, P < 0.000 1) . The mRNA expression of AhR, CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 was significantly lower in the resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group than in the benzo (a) pyrene group ( t=10.64, 33.599, 18.327, respectively, all P < 0.001) . The benzo (a) pyrene group showed significantly decreased protein expression of AhR compared with the resveratrol+benzo (a) pyrene group ( P < 0.001) . Conclusion:Resveratrol can inhibit the environmental pollutant benzo (a) pyrene-induced expression of inflammatory factor IL-1α in SZ95 sebocytes, which is likely mediated by the AhR and p38MAPK pathways.

Introduction: We report a case in which multidisciplinary treatment including palliative radiotherapy reduced the size, exudate production and symptoms of a sebaceous carcinoma that had been neglected and allowed to form into a large destructive lesion. Case: A 48-year-old unemployed man who lived alone, was estranged from his family and socially isolated presented with a cranial tumor which had been present for three years. He did seek medical attention on one occasion. But a definitive diagnosis was not made, and he neglected to seek further treatment. The tumor became very large, painful and began to ooze exudate, and the patient became unwell with difficulty mobilizing. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The tumor was centered on the vertex of the scalp and had a maximum diameter of 30 cm. It was diagnosed pathologically as a sebaceous carcinoma and was inoperable. The tumor was treated with palliative radiotherapy, a total dose of 27 Gy  /  9 Fr, causing it to shrink by approximately 30% and markedly reduced the rate of exudate production. His condition improved markedly and he was able to go out on leave. Discussion: This case highlights the management and clinical course of an uncommon and large cranial sebaceous carcinoma.

RESUMEN El carcinoma sebáceo es un tumor anexial raro que presenta un curso clínico agresivo con tendencia a la recurrencia local y metástasis a distancia. En el 75% de los casos se presenta en la región periocular, aunque puede aparecer en cualquier parte del cuerpo donde existan glándulas sebáceas. Presentamos un caso clínico de esta rara patología y su resolución.


ABSTRACT Sebaceous carcinoma is a rare and aggressive neoplasm derived from the adnexal epithelium of the sebaceous glands with a tendency to local recurrence and distant metastasis In 75% of cases the tumor develops in the periocular region but it can appear in any area with sebaceous glands. We report a case of this rare condition and its resolution.

ABSTRACT

Sebaceous tumors are common in dogs and include benign and malignant lesions. The increase in immunohistochemical evaluation of sebaceous tumors aggregates information regarding the origin and degree of malignancy of the lesions. The objective of this study was to evaluate PCNA immunohistochemical expression of  sebaceous tumors in dogs. Sixty-one samples include normal skin and sebaceous tumors were selected from dogs of various breeds and ages, no gender predilection, sent to the Veterinary Pathology Service of Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói/RJ, Brazil. Samples passed through histological processing, routine staining and immunostaining from PCNA. Descriptive statistical analysis, Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney and Fishers exact test were performed. The mean age of the affected animals was 10.56 years. There was no sexual predilection. Breeds more frequently affected were: Poodles, mixed-breed dogs and Cocker Spaniels. Most of the tumors were neoplasms (67.27%), and 75.67% of those were benign. Sebaceous adenoma was the most frequent neoplasm (56.75%). PCNA immunoexpression was present in hyperplasia, benign and malignant tumors. No previous studies were found using PCNA antibody in sebaceous tumors of dogs. Thus, more studies are needed to provide greater clarity regarding the role of these markers on normal skin and sebaceous tumors of dogs, as well as their use as prognos


Tumores sebáceos são comuns em cães. Tais tumores incluem lesões benignas e malignas. A avaliação imunohistoquímica desses tumores pode agregar informações sobre a origem e o grau de malignidade das lesões. Para este fim, sessenta e uma amostras, incluindo pele normal e tumores sebáceos foram selecionadas de cães de várias raças e idades, sem predileção por sexo, do arquivo do Serviço de Patologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói/RJ, Brasil. As amostras passaram por processamento histológico, coloração de rotina e imuno-histoquímica com anti-PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen). Foram realizadas análises estatísticas descritivas além dos testes de Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney para comparar a distribuição da marcação de anti-PCNA entre grupos de variáveis. Para variáveis com mais de dois grupos, aplicou-se a Análise de Variância (ANOVA). A idade média dos animais afetados foi de 10.56 anos. As raças mais afetadas foram Caniches e Cocker Spaniel, e ainda animais sem raça definida. Houve imunomarcação de PCNA em tumores benignos, malignos, e ainda em lesões hiperplásicas com intensidade variada. A maioria dos tumores eram neoplásicos representando 67.92% do total; destes, 75.00% eram benignos. O adenoma sebáceo foi a neoplasia mais frequente (37.74%). Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas nas distribuições de anti-PCNA entre os grupos das variáveis sexo, idade, status reprodutivo, localização e tamanho do tumor e diagnóstico histopatológico. Embora não haja estudos com anti-PCNA em tumores sebáceos caninos, numerosas publicações apontam seu valor preditivo em outras neoplasias. Com isso, a finalidade deste estudo foi avaliar a expressão de anti-PCNA em tumores sebáceos caninos e sua possível associação com a malignidade das lesões.

Descriptive statistical analysis was performed, the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the distribution of anti-PCNA labelling in different groups of variables. In case there were more than two groups, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test was performed. The mean age of the affected animals was 10.56 years. The most affected breeds were Caniches and Cocker Spaniels, as well as mixed breed animals. There was immunostaining of PCNA in both benign and malignant tumors, as well as in hyperplasic lesions with varying intensity. Most of the tumors were neoplasms which represented 67.27% of the total sample; within these, 75.00% were benign. The most frequent neoplasm was sebaceous adenoma (37.74%). Results indicated no statistical difference in the distribution of anti-PCNA labelling between the groups of sex, age, reproductive status, localization, size of tumor, and histopathological diagnosis. Although there are not many studies analyzing anti-PCNA labelling in sebaceous tumors, several of them pointed out to the predictive value in other neoplasms. With this matter in mind, we intended to evaluate the expression of anti-PCNA in canine sebaceous tumor and a possible association with the malignancy of the lesions.
