ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the effect of a multicomponent program on health-related physical fitness in schoolchildren. The sample composed of 120 students of early childhood and elementary education randomized divided into two groups, intervention group that underwent a multicomponent program of physical and sports activities, along with nutritional education (IG; n = 60) and control group that did not participated in the program (CG; n = 60). Nutritional state, VO2max., muscular strength/endurance and flexibility were evaluated in the beginning and in the final of 12 weeks of intervention. The results showed that the IG group modified the nutritional state and increased the VO2max,, the muscular strength/endurance and the flexibility (p<0.0001). In the CG group, the VO2max did not modified and decreased the muscular strength/endurance (p<0.0001). Flexibility in the CG group was lower than IG group (p<0.0001). In conclusion, the multicomponent program improved the health-related physical fitness of basic education schoolchildren.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to analyse the behaviour patterns of an adolescent sample related with their moderate tovigorous physical activity (MVPA) and computer usage (playing, communicating, studying and overall) depending on sex, sport participation level and day of the week (weekday and weekend) and to find out if there were associations among these behaviours. The sample of the study was comprised by 357 adolescents aged 15 to 18 years-old (183 girls and 174 boys) which were classified in ‘Athletes”, ‘Actives’ and ‘Inactives’ to whom self-administered questionnaires were administered. Results showed a higher MVPA practice and a lower computer usage on weekdays than during weekends. Significant differences were observed according to the sport participation level being ‘Athletes’ who more diminished their practice and more increased the computer usage for communicating during weekends. As much weekdays as weekends, boys engaged more in computer for playing while girls leaded them in computer for communicating. Finally, major signs of displacing hypothesis were observed for computer use for communicating and/or studying on weekdays than during weekends, where significant associations were not found. Globally, a special need of increasing the youth participation in MVPA on weekends emerges, where leisure possibilities to keep physically active are greater.

ABSTRACT

University of Antioquia Welfere Direction, through the Department of Sports, offer students and the university community in general, programs and activities that are educational, recreational and representative, that encourage sport, recreation and good use of leisure time. Although University Welfare Direction has a system of quality management, it does not provide sufficient intormation to identify the preferences of the students in these areas. Therefore, it has only a little knowledge about it, leading to possibility that the offer does not correspond to the real needs of the community. To address this problem, we developed a descriptive study, combining quantitative and qualitative methods and applying a random probability sample from the various academic units, with the aim of learning about sports preferences of the student community of the University. Among the most representative is the little sport before admission to the University and then practiced by income activities outside the University as football, cardio and gym, a low supply of institutional knowledge regarding sport and recreation and the main activities carried out by women are swim- ming and the gym, men, soccer and football. It also appears that the most preferred activities for students are aerobics and extreme sports.

ABSTRACT

This is a retrospective study of sports related deaths on the human bodies brought for autopsy in the last 10 years (from 1995-2005) at University Malaya Medical Center (UMMC), Kuala Lumpur. The objective of this study was to know the cause of death, manner of death, ethnicity, food habits, timings of incident, number of cases and other related information like history of metabolic disorders or any other underlying diseases. All cases were analyzed in relation to age, gender, race, causes of death, type of sport activities and victim’s profile. The present study included those subjects who had died either during playing or immediately after it. Our results showed the most common age group affected in such sports related sudden deaths to be ranging between 40 – 49 years and the least affected were between 0 – 9 years of age. Out of 44 cases reanalyzed, 33 were male and1 was female. Among the ethnic group, most of the subjects were Chinese (45.45 %) followed by Malays (20.45%). This study also showed that 80% of the deaths were caused by ischemic heart disease IHD (50%) or coronary heart disease CAD (30%). Deaths were seen to be more in the subjects above 30 years of age which could be associated with the associated risk factors related to ageing. A significant number of deaths were observed while playing badminton and jogging. No serious need for mass screening was felt as the numbers of cases each year were not significant and they were isolated incidents. Although, there are few basic preventive measures like cardiac screening , lipid profile, avoidance of stressful working conditions which can be easily adopted to decrease loss of life. Incidence may decrease with recreational and health maintaining activities, but absolute prevention may still not be possible.
