ABSTRACT

@#Student nurses must be competently prepared to address the rising human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic in the Philippines. This article presents the development and effect of the online HIV Prevention and Care Training (HPCT) program for student nurses. The Iowa Model-Revised guided the development of the program. Literature review, student and faculty engagements, advocate participation, resources and protocol assessment, and pre-HPCT survey analysis were systematically performed to determine the contents and delivery of the program. The participants were 2nd and 3rd year level student nurses who were asked to answer the pre- and post-HPCT online surveys containing sociodemographic, HIV knowledge, attitudes, and perceived practices, and program evaluation questionnaires. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed using SPSS version 23. Student nurses in the post-HPCTsurvey obtained significantly higher HIV knowledge scale mean scores (mean=18.22, SD=4.138) than those in the pre-HPCT survey (mean=15.01, SD=4.069) (p=.000). Pre- to post-HPCT survey revealed significant decreases in the proportions of student nurses who agreed on the following: HIV-positive patients should not be put in rooms with other patients when admitted to hospital (44.3%, 31.6%; p=.004); the need to worry about putting family and friends at risk of contracting the disease when caring for a person with HIV/AIDS (39.7%, 26.4%; p=.002); and healthcare workers are worried of getting HIV/AIDS from caring for a person with HIV/AIDS in their work environment (47.2%, 37.5%; p=.011). Significantly, more student nurses in the post-HPCT survey agreed in all the items of the HIV practice scale than those in the pre-HPCT survey. The online HPCTprogram was acceptable with beneficial effects on student nurses' HIV knowledge, attitudes, and perceived practices. There is a need to highlight basic HIV concepts and integrate HIV developments in the education of student nurses.

ABSTRACT

@#Understanding the patients' views on the care they receive is essential for the development of quality health care services. The study aimed to determine the patients' experiences and level of satisfaction on the care rendered by student nurses in the medical and surgical wards of a private hospital . Furthermore, it determined any significant difference in the patients' experiences and level of satisfaction when grouped according to demographic variables. A descriptive research design was utilized in the study. The participants were recruited from the medical and surgical wards of the hospital from September 5 to October 15, 2016. A total of 100 patients who received care from the student nurses for a minimum of 2 days were included in the study. The Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale (NSNS) was used to determine the patients' experiences and level of satisfaction on the care rendered by student nurses. Frequency, percentage, mean score, T-test, and ANOVA were utilized for the data analysis. Results showed that patients' experiences were above good (category mean of 4.97) and were completely satisfied (category mean of 3.53) with the care rendered by the student nurses. A significant difference was also found between the highest educational attainment and patients' experiences (P< 0.05). These findings are important in improving the quality of care rendered to the patients by student nurses. Furthermore, it helps the nursing education in determining and enhancing the competencies of the students in some focused areas.

ABSTRACT

@#Literature has documented that student nurses undergo stress in their academic and clinical setting. This raises concerns because stress during undergraduate training may result in psychological or emotional impairment during the nurses’ professional life and ultimately affect the quality of patient care. The Objective of the study was to study the prevalence of stress, and the association between sociodemographic factors, stressors and coping strategies with stress. This was a cross-sectional study on 96-year 1-3 nursing students from a government university done between 2015-2018. Bahasa Malaysia translated The General Health Questionnaire, Stressors in Nursing Student Scale Questionnaire and Brief COPE Questionnaire was used in this study. This study had Malay (95.9%) and female (91.7%) dominated population. The prevalence of stress in student nurses was 25%. No association was reported between sociodemographic factors and stress. Among the 4 stressors educational, clinical, confidence and financial, clinical stressor scored the highest mean 6.40 (SD±3.66). Confidence stressor (AOR=1.26 95% CI 1.04-1.53) was the only stressor associated with stress. The top 3 coping strategies practiced by the student nurses were religion (praying), acceptance and planning. Self-blame (AOR 8.18 95% CI 1.86-35.91) was the only coping strategy associated with stress. Stress management programmes, and workshops on stress and coping strategies should be conducted yearly to ensure a well-balanced environment for good learning experiences and prevent stress related health problems and improved academic performance.

ABSTRACT

The study explores the generational contrast between personal values in students and nurses and their adjustment to the predictions of the theory of changing values. The sample was comprised of 369 students and nurses who were divided into three groups: students (n = 150), nurses under age 40 (n = 114), and nurses between 41 and 60 years of age (n = 105). The participants reported their values on an open questionnaire, in order of priority. The reports were organized into value categories to analyze the differences between groups. Two trends were found in the report on personal values: in some cases, they fit what is predicted by the theory of changing values; in others, they contradict it. The importance of these findings and the need to empower training oriented towards the values of the nursing profession is discussed. The study contributes to what we know about the change in personal values among nursing professionals.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Nursing is regarded as a female-dominated profession. However, the number of Korean males entering the field of nursing is increasing. This study examines which of the following factors influence professionalism in male and female student nurses: area of nursing, gender identity, gender stereotypes, satisfaction with the field, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal relationships. METHODS: In total, 133 male and 293 female student nurses were selected from four Korean provinces between July 2013 and February 2014 to participate in this study. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, chi2-tests of independence, and multiple regression analyses using SPSS/Win 20 software. RESULTS: In males, 47.4% of variance in nursing professionalism was accounted for by grades, interpersonal relationships, gender stereotypes, and satisfaction with the field. In females, 41.9% of variance in nursing professionalism was accounted for by satisfaction with the field, interpersonal relationships, area of nursing, age, emotional intelligence and grades. Common factors that influenced both genders included satisfaction with the field, interpersonal relationships and grades. CONCLUSION: Although males and females revealed no significant differences in overall mean scores of nursing professionalism, several factors influencing nursing professionalism did differ by gender. Therefore, gender-specific nursing educational and training programs may be necessary to promote professionalism among student nurses.

ABSTRACT

This descriptive study with a quantitative approach aimed to investigate conduct and practices in contraception and the prevention of sexually-transmitted diseases among nursing academics, identify the methods of contraception used and to describe risky behaviors. The data was obtained via a questionnaire applied to 135 students between May and June 2011, and was analyzed by descriptive statistics with absolute frequency and percentages. The sample was mainly made up of single young women, aged between 20 and 23. The masculine condom and the oral contraceptive pill were the most-related methods, used separately or combined. Early initiation of sexual relations and practices without the use of condoms was noted, which resulted in 5,9% of the students having contracted a sexually-transmitted disease. It was observed that nursing academics' conduct, where contraception and prevention of sexually-transmitted diseases are concerned, is precarious.

The introvert type students had significantly higher SAT scores than those of the extrovert type (p=.002). 3. The judging type students had significantly higher GPA scores throughout their college years than the perceiving type. 4. There was no statistically significant relationship between SAT and GPA scores. SAT scores did not accurately predict students' academic achievement in college in this sample. CONCLUSION: The distribution of the personality types in the sample was different from the general population which may suggest that college admission criteria is biased toward certain personality type. Since different personality types process information and cope with the outside world differently, effective teaching strategies need to be considered for each class.
