ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION@#The current study aimed to estimate the overall prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of successful ageing, as defined by Rowe and Kahn, among a national sample of multiethnic adults aged 60 years and older in Singapore.@*METHODS@#Data from older adults who participated in the Well-being of the Singapore Elderly study was analysed. Successful ageing was defined with five indicators: no major diseases; no disability; high cognitive functioning; high physical functioning; and active engagement with life.@*RESULTS@#The prevalence of successful ageing was 25.4% in this older population. Older adults aged 75-84 years and ≥ 85 years had 0.3 times and 0.1 times the odds of successful ageing, respectively, than those aged 60-74 years. Compared to older adults of Chinese ethnicity, those of Malay (odds ratio [OR] 0.6) and Indian (OR 0.5) ethnicities were less likely to be associated with successful ageing. Older adults with lower education levels, who had no formal education (OR 0.2), some schooling but did not complete primary education (OR 0.4) or only primary education (OR 0.5), had lower odds of ageing successfully than those with tertiary education.@*CONCLUSION@#Older adults in Singapore tend to have much more active engagement with life as compared to their counterparts from other countries. Further research into this population is needed, both in terms of qualitative research to gain a better understanding of successful ageing from the older adult's perspective, as well as longitudinal studies that explore behavioural determinants of successful ageing.

ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the present situation of Successful Aging (SA) and its Constitution Types of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CTTCM) in the elderly, exploring on the correlation between SA and CTTCM. Methods Totally 198 old adults from community service center were investigated with Chinese-version Successful aging Inventory (C-SAI) and TCM physique type scale. Results The mean score of SA was(56.90±10.01), the physical types of the elderly are mostly biased. The results of one-way variance analysis of Constitution Types of Traditional Chinese Medicine showed that there were differences in the SAI scores of old people with different physique types (F=21.180, P<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed SA scores were statistically significant in terms of educational level, living styles, dietary habits, sleep quality and participation in social activities (t=-4.969-4.257, P<0.05). Conclusions The SA in our study was at a moderate level, the constitution types of the elderly are mainly biased. The Constitution Types of Traditional Chinese Medicine could influence the old adults′ SA. By providing individualized Chinese medicine intervention for the elderly to correct biased physique, and improve the level of successful aging in future.

ABSTRACT

Objective According to the theoretic framework of successful ageing, this study developed a multidimensional Successful Ageing Assessment Scale and tested its reliability and validity. Methods Through literature review, the study determined evaluative dimension, structure and scoring method. Then, the Successful Ageing Multidimensional Assessment Scale(SAMAS) was developed and was optimized by the expert consultation,semi-structured interview and twice tests. The predicted sample was conducted with item analysis, and testing of reliability and validity; the formal tested sample was conducted with item analysis, conformance testing and testing of reliability and validity. Then the formal tested sample was tested and retested two weeks later. The intestine emendatory Activities of Daily Living Scale (ADL),Mini Mental State Examination Scale (MMSE),Social Disability Screening Schedule (SDSS) and Memorial University of Newfoundland Scale of Happiness(MUNSH) were used to test its criteri-on validity. Results SAMAS consisted of 5 dimensions, including chronic disease state, physical perfor-mance,cognitive function, social function, subjective well-being.Item analysis showed the dimensions of scale and total scale scores had positive correlation. In conformance testing, the Kappa value was 0.65~0.86,test-retest reliability was 0.66~0.85 and the internal consistency reliability was 0.88.The correl-ative coefficient of the physical performance and social function scores were negatively correlated with ADL scores and SSDS scores, the correlative coefficient of the cognitive function and subjective well-being scores were positively correlated with MMSE scores and MUNSH scores. Conclusions SAMAS suggested good reliability, validity and could well evaluate comprehensive health for the elderly,at the same time could distinguish between SA and non SA group.
