ABSTRACT

Introduction@#According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than a million cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are registered in the world every day. Our country is among the countries with a concentrated spread of HIV infection among the population at risk According to the WHO classification. Although Mongolia is one of the countries with a low prevalence of HIV/AIDS, it is considered to a country with a high risk of STD caused from the location in the middle of the two countries where the HIV infection is spreading as fastest, thus it is important to study.@*Purpose@#The aim is to study the epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases in the population of Ulaanbaatar.@*Material and Method@#The study was conducted using a single-moment descriptive research design. The following information was obtained from the statistics of the Health Development Center. Including as following: </br>• Annual indicators of the disease: Statistical data of sexually transmitted diseases between 2017- 2021 (Ulaanbaatar city) </br>• Annual indicators of the disease: 2017-2021 statistical data on the state of sexually transmitted diseases (city average and provincial average)@*Result@#Considering the prevalence rate of sexually transmitted infections per 10,000 population by age group, as of 2017-2021, the population aged 20-39 had the highest rate of infection with 9.4-154.2 cases, and in 2018, the population aged 30-39 had 146.2 cases was the highest. In terms of the source of infection, 83.1 percent of the total cases in 2017-2021 were sexually transmitted.</br> Comparing the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections in the population of Ulaanbaatar by location and the number of cases per 10,000 population, as of 2017-2021, Bagakhangai district had more cases in 2017 and 2019, and Sukhbaatar district had 221.4 cases in 2018, which was the highest in the 5-year period, Nalaikh district recorded 64.7 cases in 2020 and 48.4 in 2021, which was the district with the highest number of cases in these years.</br> In terms of education, people with secondary education or below accounted for 94.1 percent of all cases in the 5-year average.</br> About the marriage status, 35.9 percent of all cases registered in 2017 were never married, and 53.5 percent were married. As of 2018-2021, there has been no significant increase or decrease in this indicator.@*Conclusion@#</br>1. During 2017-2021, the cases of sexually transmitted infections (syphilis, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis) per 10,000 population was in 2018, the incidence of infection decreased by 2.7 cases, in 2019 it increased by 7 cases, and in 2020 it decreased by 2.2 cases, in 2021, it decreased by 18.3 cases from the previous year, and it is believed that sexually transmitted diseases are expected to decrease in the future. </br>2. The average rate of syphilis infection (2017-2021) per 10,000 population in Ulaanbaatar was 4.4 cases higher than the average of the provinces, the average of 4.1 cases of gonorrhea infection is likely to increase, and the average of trichomoniasis was 13.4 cases or was equal to average of the provinces and Ulaanbaatar. The problem affecting the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases is related to the level of education of the citizens. 9 out of 10 people have completed secondary education or less.

ABSTRACT

Bovine Trichomoniasis (BT) is an infectious disease caused by Tritrichomonas foetus that can be transmitted either sexually or by fomites. In males, the disease is asymptomatic and permanent. T. foetus has been detected in semen samples where it is able to remain viable even when frozen. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of T. foetus in 27 samples of commercial frozen bovine semen by culture and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Samples were thawed in water at 37°C. Part of the samples was inoculated in a test tube containing Diamond's medium and incubated at 35°C. Growth was evaluated every 24 hours via direct examination under a microscope. The other part was placed in an Eppendorf tube and frozen for later molecular analysis. After 10 days of culture, all samples were negative for T. foetus. The Quick-DNA Miniprep Kit (Zymo Research) without proteinase K was used for DNA extraction. The primers used in PCR were TRF3 and TRF4. PCR results were negative for all samples. In conclusion, bovine semen samples were negative for T. foetus in both diagnostic methods, according to the adopted methodology.(AU)


A tricomonose genital bovina (TGB), uma doença infectocontagiosa causada pelo Tritrichomonas foetus, é transmitida por via venérea e fômites contaminados. Em machos a doença é assintomática e permanente. O agente já foi encontrado em amostras de sêmen e é capaz de permanecer viável quando congelado. Este trabalho teve por objetivo investigar a presença de T. foetus em 27 amostras de sêmen bovino comercial congelado, por meio de cultivo e reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR). As amostras foram descongeladas em água a 37ºC; parte foi inoculada em tubo de ensaio contendo meio Diamond, incubada a 35ºC com consequente avaliação de crescimento e avaliada a cada 24 horas, via exame direto em microscópio, e a outra parte foi diluída em PBS para análise molecular. Após 10 dias de cultivo, todas as amostras foram negativas. Para a detecção molecular foi utilizado o kit Quick-DNA Miniprep (Zymo Research) sem proteinase K para extração do DNA. Os iniciadores utilizados na PCR foram TRF3 e TRF4. O resultado da PCR foi negativo para todas as amostras. Conclui-se que as amostras utilizadas foram realmente negativas para a presença do patógeno em ambos os métodos diagnósticos, o que comprovou a inocuidade do sêmen testado.(AU)

Introducción: Se desconocen las características de las infecciones cervicovaginales, diagnosticadas mediante el exudado vaginal, sobre todo en mujeres cubanas de mediana edad. En otras etapas del ciclo vital femenino, sí se han realizado estos estudios. Esta información es importante, fundamentalmente para realizar acciones de promoción de salud. Objetivo: Determinar las características de las infecciones cervicovaginales más frecuentes diagnosticadas mediante el exudado vaginal. Método: Se realizó un estudio transversal en 1118 mujeres. Se recogió la edad (agrupada en 20 - 44 años y 45 y más años), los resultados del exudado vaginal, la percepción de secreción vaginal o la ausencia de esta (asintomáticas) y los microorganismos identificados en el exudado. Resultados: El 49,9 por ciento de exudados vaginales fueron positivos a vaginosis bacteriana, Cándidas albicans, Trichomonas vaginalis y desequilibro en la ecología vaginal. El 45 por ciento de las pacientes no tenían secreción vaginal, es decir, estaban asintomáticas. Conclusión: Las infecciones cervicovaginales se caracterizaron por ser de elevada frecuencia, usualmente asintomáticas, con predominio de vaginosis bacteriana, candidiasis y trichomoniasis(AU)


ABSTRACT Introduction: The characteristics of cervicovaginal infections diagnosed by vaginal exudate are unknown, especially in middle-aged Cuban women. At other stages of the female life cycle, these studies have been done. Due to the importance of this information, to carry out health promotion actions, this research was carried out. Objective: To determine the characteristics of the most frequent cervicovaginal infections diagnosed by vaginal exudate. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 1118 women. Age (grouped into 20-44 years and 45 and over), the results of positive vaginal discharge, the perception of presence or not of vaginal discharge (asymptomatic) and the microorganisms identified in the discharge were collected. Results: 49.9 percent of vaginal exudates were positive for bacterial vaginosis, Candidas albicans, Trichomonas vaginalis and imbalance in vaginal ecology. 45 percent of the patients had no vaginal discharge, that is, they were asymptomatic. Conclusion: Cervicovaginal infections were characterized by being of high frequency, usually asymptomatic, with prevalence of bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis and trichomoniasis(AU)

OBJETIVO: revisar los diferentes métodos de diagnóstico de la tricomoniasis vaginal disponibles hasta el presente. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: se revisó la bibliografía latinoamericano e internacional a través de los sitios electrónicos de Pub-Med y Scielo. RESULTADOS: la Tricomonas vaginalis es considera como la enfermedad de transmisión sexual no viral, curable más frecuente y prevalente en el mundo. Se revisan los diferentes de métodos para diagnosticar la presencia de la tricomonas vaginalis en pacientes femeninos con síntomas y signos de la infección producida por el protozoario flagelado. CONCLUSIONES: se revisaron los diferentes métodos de diagnostico de la infección producida por la Tricomonas vaginalis en pacientes femeninas, desde los clásicos hasta los más actuales que emplean alta tecnología.


OBJECTIVE: to review the different diagnostic methods of Trichomonas vaginal available at the present time. MATERIAL AND METHOD: it was reviewed the Latin-American and international bibliography using the Pub-Med and Scielo web sites. RESULTS: Trichomonas vaginalis is considered the most common and prevalent sexual transmitted disease curable and non-viral worldwide. It was reviewed the different methods to diagnose the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis in female patients with symptoms and signs of infection produces by the flagellate protozoa. CONCLUSION: Different methods of diagnosis of the infection produced by Trichomonas vaginalis, since the classics to the most current methods that use high technology, were reviewed.

ABSTRACT

Background: Pregnancy represents a risk factor in the occurrence of vaginal infection. This study was undertaken to define the persistence of vaginal flora in 280 pregnant women at 14 to 34 weeks' gestation and to evaluate the role of cytology in diagnosis of vaginal infections. It aims to study the maternal and neonatal outcome in pregnancy with vaginal discharge.Methods: High vaginal swab samples and data on epidemiological characteristics were collected from 280 pregnant women between 14-34 weeks with complaints of abnormal vaginal discharge at booking clinic of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College, Nagpur. Vaginal swab was collected and sent to laboratory for further investigation to establish etiological diagnosis. After diagnosis by vaginal swab report, subjects were treated with the specific treatment to individual infection. Subjects were followed up during antenatal period for complications. A birth weight of delivered baby was noted. The data was analysed using software Graph Pad in stat 3.Results: The incidence of abnormal vaginal discharge in pregnancy was 23.9% in one year. The frequency of abnormal discharge was 53% among those aged 20-24 years (97/183), 49.2% in primigravida (65/132). Pain in lower abdomen and back was the most common symptoms i.e. 88.19% in Cases, while 17.36% had vulval pruritus and 14.58% had dysuria.Conclusions: This study recommend that women complaining of vaginal discharge in pregnancy should be evaluated for infections. this study supports CDC-P recommendation as all women who have symptomatic vaginitis, should be treated regardless of pregnancy status.

ABSTRACT

Trichomonas vaginalis is the etiological agent of trichomoniasis one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections worldwide. This paper aimed to determine the prevalence and the risk factors associated to the dissemination of the parasite in the prison environment, as well as comparing the diagnostic methods used for its detection. The present study included 56 female inmates at Professor Jacy de Assis Penitentiary, in Uberlandia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age and sexual orientation. To diagnose T. vaginalis, wet mount and culture in TYM medium were utilized. The results were compared to the Papanicolaou test, the routine diagnostic method used in prisons. To outline the socioepidemiological profile of the participants an investigative survey was applied during an interview preceding the medical consultation. Of the 56 women included in the present study, six were diagnosed positive for T. vaginalis, by the three methods resulting in a prevalence of 10.7%. Culture and wet mount presented 100% specificity and sensitivity. On the other hand, sensitivity and specificity of the Papanicolaou test were 75% and 96%, respectively. None of the variables analysed, herein, could be associated with the infection. Despite the presence of the parasite, it was not possible to set an epidemiological pattern for positive patients, highlighting the particularities of this population. Regarding the diagnostic methods, wet mount and culture were equally efficient and superior to Papanicolaou in detecting T. vaginalis.

ABSTRACT

A retrospective study of oral trichomoniasis cases in raptors was carried out at "Laboratório Regional de Diagnóstico" of "Faculdade de Veterinária" of "Universidade Federal de Pelotas" (LRD-UFPel) from December 2014 to August 2017. Seven necropsy reports were reviewed. All raptors including Falconiformes and Strigiformes orders were from periurban zones. Four birds were adults, and there was no apparent sex predisposition. Clinical signs included dysphagia, regurgitation, and anorexia. Gross lesions were characterized by multifocal yellow to coalescent caseous nodules adhered to the oral cavity, which extended to the entrance of the esophagus. Microscopically, the lesions were characterized by severe focally extensive heterophilic granulomatous stomatitis. Trichomonas gallinae was isolated in modified Diamond medium of all samples collected from birds. It is believed the transmission occurred by the predation of domestic pigeons (Columbia livia domestica) contaminated with T. gallinae that agglomerate in patios of grain processing complexes.(AU)


Foi realizado um estudo retrospectivo de casos de tricomoníase oral em rapinantes recebidos no Laboratório Regional de Diagnóstico da Faculdade de Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Pelotas (LRD-UFPel) no período de dezembro de 2014 a agosto de 2017. Foram revisados os protocolos de necropsia encontrando-se sete casos. Os animais eram todos de zonas periurbanas e foram afetadas a ordem Falconiformes e a ordem Strigiformes. Das aves afetadas 4/7 eram adultas e não houve aparente predisposição por sexo. Os sinais clínicos incluíram disfagia, regurgitação e anorexia. As lesões se caracterizaram por nódulos amarelados multifocais a coalescentes aderidos a cavidade oral, que se estendiam até a entrada do esôfago. Histologicamente as lesões caracterizaram-se por estomatite heterofílica granulomatosa focalmente extensiva acentuada. Foi isolado em meio Diamond modificado Trichomonas gallinae de todas as amostras coletadas das aves. Acredita-se que a fonte de transmissão tenha ocorrido a partir da predação por estes rapinantes de pombas domésticas (Columbia livia domestica) portadoras com T. gallinae que se aglomeram em pátios de complexos de beneficiamento de grãos.(AU)

Background: Vulvovaginitis is a common unavoidable health problem encountered in a woman’s life. Because of its recurrent and persistent symptoms, it leaves a negative impact on the quality of woman’s life and its management poses a challenge. This study is aimed to analyse the clinical profile, clinical symptoms - presentations and various etiological agents in vulvovaginitis.Methods: A study of 125 cases of vulvovaginitis in the age group of 18-50 years was done. This study was based on the data collected like - age, parity, symptoms, clinical presentations and cytological findings. Speculum examination was done with the given consent and high vaginal swabs were taken for cytological study. Based on Amsel’s criteria bacterial vaginosis was confirmed, trichomoniasis by wet mount examination and candidiasis by culture study were confirmed.Results: The present study showed maximum incidence of vaginitis 63.2% among 21-30 years age group, more common in multiparous women 44.8% and vaginal discharge was the commonest symptom 88%. Cytological study showed 53.6% bacterial vaginosis {BV), 27.2% vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), 2.4% trichomoniasis and remaining 17% mixed infections like BV + VVC 15.2% and 1.6% BV + VVC + Trichomoniasis.Conclusions: All women of reproductive age should have mandatory regular evaluation for early detection and proper management of vulvovaginitis. Creating awareness among women improves their quality of life.

Trichomoniasis is a curable sexually transmitted infection (STI) that has been reported to be linked to exposure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), although few studies have described this association. The purpose of this study was to focus on the incidence of trichomoniasis in low-income women, its relation to HIV status, viral load levels and TCD4+cell counts, among other risk factors, using an in vitro culture as a diagnostic test. A cross-sectional study among 267 women (103 HIV-positive and 164 HIV-negative) was conducted in 2015. The overall prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) infection was 6.4%. Among HIV-positive and HIV-negative women, the prevalence was 3.9% and 7.9%, respectively, yet these results were not statistically different (p=0.1878). The factors associated with TV infection were cigarette smoking (OR= 3.52), vaginal itching (OR=4.43) and bacterial vaginosis (BV) (OR= 5.29). HIV status, TCD4+ cell count and viral load were not associated with TV infection in this group. The prevalence rates found, lower than those observed in other studies, may be due to the fact that the women evaluated in the present study are part of a low-risk population as well as the limited sample size of HIV positive women

Vaginitis as female infectious disease is accompanied with some clinical symptoms such as vaginal abnormal discharges, itching, burning and many other unpleasant signs in patients. The responsible microorganisms in vaginitis are belonged to different kind of microorganisms including bacteria (Gardenella vaginitis), yeast (Candida albicans) and protozoa (Trichomonas vaginalis). The current treatments of these infections are chemical oral and vaginal drugs with many adverse effects for patients. Furthermore, appearance of resistant microorganisms to these drugs has intensified the treatment's problem. The aim of this review article was to evaluate the potency of "Zataria multiflora" essential oil in treatment of women's vaginitis. For preparing this manuscript, the information was extracted from different electronic and published resources. Investigation in different resources showed there were 6 clinical trials that evaluate it as suitable treatment for vaginitis. 5 clinical studies have been focused on 0.1% Z. multiflora essential oils in treatment of bacterial vaginosis (n=1), candidiasis (n=1) and trichomoniasis (n=1). Two clinical studies were related to treatments of bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis and mixed infection. There is one clinical study for treatment of candidiasis by 1% Z. multiflora methanol extract. Z. multiflora was formulated in cream form and applied for 5-7 continuous days. The results of clinical trials showed that Z. multiflora essential oil (0.1%) can be used as safe and efficient alternative treatment for treatment of bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis and to a lesser extent for trichomoniasis.


La vaginitis es una enfermedad infecciosa femenina acompañada de algunos síntomas como flujo vaginal, prurito, sensación de ardor y otros síntomas de incomodidad para las pacientes. Los microorganismos responsables de vaginitis son variados e incluyen bacterias (Gardenella vaginitis), hongos (Candida albicans) y protozoos (Trichomonas vaginalis). Los tratamientos utilizados actualmente son medicamentos de uso oral o vaginal con potenciales efectos adversos. Adicionalmente se encuentran organismos resistentes a estos tratamientos, lo que ha llevado a la búsqueda de nuevas alternativas. El propósito de esta revisión sistemática fue evaluar la potencia del aceite esencia de "Zataria multiflora" para el tratamientos de la vaginitis. Se realizó una búsqueda en recursos bibliográficos y bases de datos electrónicos. Se encontraron seis ensayos clínicos que evaluaron este aceite para el tratamiento de la vaginitis. En 5 estudios clínicos se utilizó aceite esencial al 0.1% de Z. multiflora para el tratamiento de vaginosis bacteriana (n=1), candidiasis (n=1) y tricomoniasis (n=1) y en tres estudios se usó para tratamiento tanto de infecciones bacterianas, tricomoniasisi o mixtas. Se encontró un estudio para tratamiento de la candidiasis con extracto en metanol 1% de Z. multiflora. Se hizo formulación de Z. multiflora en crema tópica y aplicada por 5-7 días continuos. Los resultados mostraron que el aceite esencial de Z. multiflora (0.1%) puede ser usado de manera segura y eficiente como alternativa en vaginosis bacteriana, candidiasis y en menor grado para tricomoniasis.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to measure the level of awareness of Trichomonas vaginalis / trichomoniasis and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), in 300 women from 19 municipalities in the southwest region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, who sought the gynecology sector of the Basic Healthcare Centers in the Municipality of Bagé from January to June 2013. The data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire, and the results were tabulated and organized using Excel® 2010 software. Only 5.7% of the participants said they were aware of T. vaginalis / trichomoniasis and had a little information on HIV and Aids in reference to other STDs. Schooling alone was significant (p = 0.0135), as women who had a high school diploma or higher education were 6.6 times more likely to be aware of T. vaginalis. There is, therefore, a need to devise better educational campaigns, addressing this and other STDs, such as trichomoniasis, given the lack of knowledge about this parasite, its high frequency and possible escalation.

Objective: To investigate the presence of trichomoniasis among women attending the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre. Methods: A total of 139 high vaginal swabs were taken from the subjects and sent to the laboratory in Amies gel transport media. The specimens were examined for the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis using wet mount, Giemsa staining and cultured in Diamond's medium. Sociodemographic characteristics and gynaecological complaints were obtained in private using structured questionnaire applied by one investigator. Results: The median age was 32 years, with an interquartile interval of 9.96. Most of the subjects were Malays (76.9%) and the remaining were Chinese (15.1%), Indians (2.2%) and other ethnic groups (5.8%). One hundred and thirty eight (99.3%) of the women were married and 98.6%had less than 6 children. More than half (75.5%) of the women's last child birth was less than 6 years ago. Forty seven percent of them were involved in supporting administrative work and 64.7% of the women gave a history of previous or current vaginal discharge. Conclusions: The present study reported zero incidence rate of trichomoniasis. The low incidence rate was postulated due to all women who participated in this study were categorized into a low-risk group.

Most of the subjects were Malays (76.9%) and the remaining were Chinese (15.1%), Indians (2.2%) and other ethnic groups (5.8%). One hundred and thirty eight (99.3%) of the women were married and 98.6% had less than 6 children. More than half (75.5%) of the women's last child birth was less than 6 years ago. Forty seven percent of them were involved in supporting administrative work and 64.7% of the women gave a history of previous or current vaginal discharge. Conclusions The present study reported zero incidence rate of trichomoniasis. The low incidence rate was postulated due to all women who participated in this study were categorized into a low-risk group.

ABSTRACT

This study explored epidemiological trends in trichomoniasis in Daegu, South Korea. Wet mount microscopy, PCR, and multiplex PCR were used to test for Trichomonas vaginalis in vaginal swab samples obtained from 621 women visiting 2 clinics in Daegu. Of the 621 women tested, microscopy detected T. vaginalis in 4 (0.6%) patients, PCR detected T. vaginalis in 19 (3.0%) patients, and multiplex PCR detected T. vaginalis in 12 (1.9%) patients. Testing via PCR demonstrated high sensitivity and high negative predictive value for T. vaginalis. Among the 19 women who tested positive for T. vaginalis according to PCR, 94.7% (18/19) reported vaginal signs and symptoms. Notably, more than 50% of T. vaginalis infections occurred in females younger than 30 years old, and 58% were unmarried. Multiplex PCR, which simultaneously detects pathogens from various sexually transmitted infections, revealed that 91.7% (11/12) of patients were infected with 2 or more pathogens. Mycoplasma hominis was the most prevalent co-infection pathogen with T. vaginalis, followed by Ureaplasma urealyticum and Chlamydia trachomatis. Our results indicate that PCR and multiplex PCR are the most sensitive tools for T. vaginalis diagnosis, rather than microscopy which has been routinely used to detect T. vaginalis infections in South Korea. Therefore, clinicians should take note of the high prevalence of T. vaginalis infections among adolescent and young women in order to prevent persistent infection and transmission of this disease.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the difference of leucorrhea routine tests results among 3 periods of pregnancy in pregnant women.Methods Vaginal cleanliness,the presence of clue cells,trichomonas and fungi were tested for 3 103 obstetric outpatients who were pregnant and treated in the hospital.The test results were analyzed and compared.Results Among pregnant women in different periods of pregnancy,the difference in the proportion of vaginal cleanliness degree Ⅲ and fungal infection rates were statis-tically significant(P <0.05).Among pregnant women of different pregnant periods with vaginal cleanliness degree Ⅱ,difference of fungi infection rate was statistically significant(P <0.05).Among pregnant women of different pregnant periods with vaginal clean-liness degree Ⅳ,the difference of positive rates of fungi,trichomonas and clue cells were statistically significant(P <0.05).In addi-tion,there are a number of mixed infections.Conclusion Vaginitis during pregnancy should be early detected,diagnosed and trea-ted.

La tricomoniasis es una infección de transmisión sexual (ITS) que se asocia a vaginitis, uretritis, cervicitis y enfermedad inflamatoria pélvica pudiendo producir infertilidad tubárica. El objetivo de este trabajo, de tipo retrospectivo longitudinal, fue determinar la prevalencia de Trichomonas vaginalis en una población de trabajadores sexuales en Mendoza, Argentina. Se estudió en forma retrospectiva una población de 720 personas asistidas por el Programa Provincial de ITS de Mendoza. Entre febrero de 2007 y junio de 2009 se procesaron 1692 muestras con un muestreo por reposición. La distribución por sexo fue de 687 mujeres y 33 varones con edades comprendidas entre 15 y 65 años. La prevalencia de tricomoniasis determinada en esta población en riesgo fue de 7.6% para las mujeres, sin encontrarse infecciones en el grupo de los hombres. La prevalencia hallada en este grupo en riesgo muestra una población con alta vulnerabilidad para contraer otras ITS de mayor gravedad. En otro sentido, sugiere una importante falta de adhesión al uso de barreras mecánicas para prevenir infecciones de transmisión sexual. Este trabajo justifica la elaboración de una guía de procedimientos para el manejo de la infección por tricomonas en el marco del Programa de Salud Reproductiva (PROSAR).


Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) usually associated to vaginitis, urethritis, cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease, which can cause infertility. The aim of this retrospective longitudinal study was to determine Trichomonas vaginalis prevalence in a population of male and female sex workers in Mendoza, Argentina. A cohort of 720 people who attended the STI Program in this province was retrospectively analyzed. From February 2007 up to June 2009, 1692 samples were processed using a reposition sampling method. The age and sex distribution of the population was: 687 women/33 men, from 15 to 65 years old. Trichomoniasis prevalence determined for this population at risk was 7.6% in women only, men did not present infection. The high prevalence shown for this risk group suggests a great vulnerability of this population to contract other more serious STIs. In another sense, it also shows a remarkable lack in the use of mechanical barriers to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The present research justifies the elaboration of standardized procedures guide to diagnose T. vaginalis within the framework of the Reproductive Health Program (PROSAR).

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan parasite, is the causative agent of human trichomoniasis, the most common non-viral sexually transmitted disease. The infection encompasses from a complete asymptomatic presentation to severe sequelae; yet, the virulence markers have been poorly understood. It is suggested that the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis virus (TVV) in T. vaginalis may have an impact on its virulence, and its relatedness to in vitro metronidazole resistance has been reported. The aim of the study was to assess the presence of TVV in fresh and Long -Term Cultivated ( LTC) maintained T. vaginalis isolates from symptomatic (S) and asymptomatic (AS) Indian women and its relatedness, if any, with symptomatology and in vitro drug sensitivity. Materials and Methods: One thousand women (537 S and 463 AS) were screened for the presence of T. vaginalis by wet smear and culture examination of vaginal swab and urine sample. Fresh and LTC (6 months-2 years) maintained 15 isolates each from 15 S and 15 AS women were subjected to agarose gel electrophoresis following total cellular RNA extraction to evaluate the presence of double stranded (ds) RNA viral infection. The susceptibility of isolates to metronidazole was determined in vitro. Results: On agarose gel electrophoresis, three bands (5.5, 2.5 and 1.5 kb) were observed in all the 30 fresh isolates from 15 S and 15 AS women and only in 7 LTC isolates from 3 S and 4 AS women. All the fresh isolates harbouring TVV were found to be sensitive to metronidazole in vitro irrespective of the symptomatology of subjects, and out of seven LTC isolates harbouring TVV, six were sensitive to metronidazole and one showed borderline resistance. Conclusions: The results suggest that the presence of TVV alone may not be a virulence marker and loss of TVV on LTC appears to be related to drug resistance. The T. vaginalis Indian isolates are sensitive to metronidazole.

Las infecciones del aparato genital femenino constituyen un problema importante de la práctica ginecoobstétrica. Son causa de morbilidad, mortalidad materna y neonatal. Entre los factores que explican su frecuencia están: aborto provocado, aumento de intervenciones quirúrgicas e infecciones de transmisión sexual. OBJETIVO: Realizar el diagnóstico y determinar la prevalencia de infecciones vaginales en mujeres que asisten al Laboratorio de Microbiología del Hospital Ginecoobstétrico "Ramón González Coro" con la utilización del Juego de diagnóstico de infecciones vaginales Newvagin C-Kure. MÉTODOS: Se examinaron 150 mujeres, de edades entre 17 y 74 años, de mayo a octubre de 2007. Se utilizó examen directo, criterios de Amsel y cols, así como prueba de aglutinación al látex. RESULTADOS: La prevalencia de las infecciones vaginales estudiadas fue de 62 % al examen directo y de 58,6 % con la prueba de aglutinación al látex. La infección vaginal con mayor prevalencia fue vaginosis bacteriana, seguida de candidiosis vaginal y trichomoniosis vaginal. El grupo de edad con mayor prevalencia de estas infecciones fue el de 28-37 años. La manifestación clínica más frecuente fue la leucorrea. El inicio precoz de las relaciones sexuales, la realización del acto sexual sin protección y el uso de métodos anticonceptivos, estuvieron relacionados con la presencia de estas infecciones vaginales. CONCLUSIONES: El uso del Juego de diagnóstico de infecciones vaginales NEWVAGIN C-Kure, en consultorios de médicos de familia, policlínicos comunitarios y consultas de ginecología resulta ventajoso. La realización del diagnóstico por el personal paramédico, su rapidez y la certeza en la indicación del tratamiento médico son los principales factores a considerar


The infections of female genital tract are a significant problem of gynecologic and obstetric practice. They are cause of morbidity and of mother and neonatal mortality. Among factors explaining its frequency are: provoked abortion, increase of surgical interventions and sexual transmitted infections. OBJECTIVES:To make the diagnosis and to determine the vaginal infections prevalence in women served in Microbiology Laboratory of "Ram¾n Gonzßlez Coro" using the NEWVAGIN C-Cure diagnosis kit. METHODS: Authors examined to 150 women aged between 17 and 24 from May to October, 2007. Direct examination, Amsel et al criteria and latex agglutination test were used. RESULTS: Prevalence of study vaginal infections was of 62 percent in direct examination and of 58.6 percent using the latex agglutination test. The more prevalent vaginal infection was the bacterial vaginosis followed by vaginal candidiasis and vaginal trichomoniasis. The more prevalent age group with these infections was that aged 28-37. More frequent clinical manifestation was the leucorrhea. The early onset of sexual intercourse, the intercourse without protection and the use of contraceptive methods were related to presence of these vaginal infections. CONCLUSIONS: The use of NEWVAGIN C-Kure diagnosis kit for vaginal infections in family consulting room, community polyclinics and Gynecology consultations is very advantageous. Making diagnosis by paramedical staff, its speed and accuracy in prescription of medical treatment are the leading factors to be considered

ABSTRACT

Vaginal trichomoniasis, caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, is the most common sexually transmitted disease. However, despite its high prevalence, the pathogenesis of T. vaginalis infection has not been clearly characterized although neutrophil infiltration is considered to be primarily responsible for the cytologic changes associated with this infection. We investigated that trichomonads in the vagina sometime after an acute infection secrete proteins like excretory-secretory product that have a chemotactic effect on neutrophils, and that these neutrophils are further stimulated by T. vaginalis to produce chemokines like IL-8 and GRO-alpha, which further promote neutrophil recruitment and chemotaxis. Thus, neutrophil accumulation is believed to maintain or aggravate inflammation. However, enhanced neutrophil apoptosis induced by live T. vaginalis could contribute to resolution of inflammation via anti-inflammatory cytokine produced by human macrophage phagocytosed of apoptotic neutrophils. Macrophages may constitute an important component of host defense against T. vaginalis infection, and may be involved in inflammation via production of proinflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide. In the host, T. vaginalis uses a capping phenomenon and cleave host immunoglobulins with proteinases as the evasion methods from host immune responses. Recently, we developed a highly sensitive and specific diagnostic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, and found that the method enables the detection of T. vaginalis at concentrations as low as 1 cell per PCR mixture.

ABSTRACT

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a viabilidade de um isolado de Tritrichomonas foetus criopreservada com glicerol e dimetilsulfóxido (DMSO) a -196ºC. Isolados do protozoário foram descongeladas dois dias após o congelamento e 6, 12, 18 e 26 meses, para avaliação de sua viabilidade. Em todos os tempos analisados, o congelamento foi viável em 60 por cento e 90 por cento das amostras congeladas com glicerol a 10 por cento e DMSO a 12 por cento, respectivamente.


The aim of this work was to evaluate the viabilitity of Tritrichomonas foetus cryopreservated with glycerol and dimethilsulphosyde (DMSO) at -196ºC. Samples of the protozoa were thaw two days and 6, 12, 18, and 26 months after freezing to be evaluated. In the time analyzed, the freezing was viable in 60 percent and 90 percent of freeze samples with glycerol at 10 percent and DMSO at 12 percent, respectively.
