ABSTRACT

Natural medicinal chemistry is one of the important courses for students in pharmacy majors. Its experimental teaching focuses on fostering comprehensive experimental skills and innovative abilities of undergraduates. Liaoning University has explored ways to promote the experimental teaching of natural drug chemistry based on the graduate employment and practical teaching experience in the past decade. These explorations include three aspects, such as synchronizing experimental teaching with theoretical teaching, fostering students' awareness of experimental safety, and improving experimental teaching methods in natural drug chemistry experiments. The practices showed that the reform has achieved a good effect. A teaching system that can achieve the three expected aspects has been established, which improved the teaching effect and quality of natural medicinal chemistry experimental courses for undergraduates. Furthermore, these explorations may facilitate fostering pharmacy specialists who can meet the opportunities of developing Chinese medicine and natural drug research and meet the requirements of employment.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The requirement to adapt dentistry education to the growing knowledge and big data is evident. Future dentists will participate in AI studies as both researchers and users. The main aim was to evaluate the attitudes of undergraduate dental students on artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Secondarily, it was aimed to discuss possible solutions for the integration of AI into education in particular to dentomaxillofacial radiology. Material and Method: A written survey included 16 questions with a 5-point Likert-scale was designed. The content of the survey included basic knowledge about AI terminology, applications on dentomaxillofacial radiology, and future estimations. One hundred seventy-six students attending the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades were included. The attitudes of the students were assessed with the total score. The responses were scored as: Strongly disagree: 1, Disagree: 2, Neutral: 3, Agree: 4, Strongly agree: 5. The minimum and maximum possible points were 16 and 80, and 48 was the middle score. The scores were classified as 16-31 (group 1), 32-47 (group 2), 48-63 (group 3), and 64-80 (group 4). Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was used to test the internal consistency of the questions. One-way analysis of variance and Chi-square test were used to compare normally distributed data. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the that did not show normal distribution. Statistical significance was evaluated with a 5% Type-I error level. Results: The Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was 0.849. The response rate of the participants was 83.41% (n=176). The mean total scale score was 57.68 ± 0.651. Group 3 had the largest cluster (67.61%; n=119), whereas the group 1 had the smallest (0.56%; n=1). The total scale score showed no statistically significant difference between the academic years. Conclusion: The attitudes of undergraduate dental students on AI were positive and students are aware of the potential of applications in the field. The conventional dentomaxillofacial radiology curriculum requires an update.

ABSTRACT

@#Quality of life is at the forefront of the goals that all societies aim to achieve today. This is the main reason why measuring quality of life is a routine procedure in many studies. This study was carried out by undergraduate and associate degree students of health sciences; the aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the quality of life. The research was carried out on a total of 200 undergraduate and associate degree students studying in the health sciences departments of the same university in a one-year period. In order to obtain the demographic information of the students; the personal data collection form created by the researchers and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale-Short Form (WHOQOL-Bref) were applied by one to one interview technique. The voluntariness of the participants was taken as a basis in filling out the questionnaires. SPSS-22 program was used to evaluate the data in our study. By making descriptive statistics, two independent groups were compared between the groups. The mean age of the associate degree students participating in our study was 20.6 ± 1.26, and the undergraduate students were 20.8 ± 3.07. When the last question, the 27th environmental question, is included in the WHOQOL-Bref scale, which consists of four sub-parameters, the name of the scale is named WHOQOL-Bref-TR. In our study, which we evaluated with WHOQOL-Bref-TR, the scores of undergraduate students in the "psychological field" sub-category were found to be significantly higher (p>0.05) than associate degree students in comparisons made based on education level. In the comparison made according to genders, the difference in general health, psychological, and environmental dimensions was not significant (p>0.05). In conclusion; in all comparisons, the level of quality of life and problem solving abilities do not differ depending on gender. As the education level increases; the psychological state, which has an effect on the quality of life, increases positively. With the data obtained, suggestions were made to curriculum arrangements and university administrations in order to increase the quality of life of young adults.

ABSTRACT

@#Our study was conducted with the aim of comparing the parameters such as personal control, self-care level, academic achievement and family characteristics that affect the problem solving skill levels of undergraduate and associate degree students studying in health departments. Our research is cross-sectional; those who study at the same university in one year; It was carried out on 200 students, 100 of whom are at undergraduate level and 100 of whom are at associate degree level. In order to obtain the demographic information of the students; The personal data collection form created by the researchers was used and the "Problem Solving Inventory (PSI)" was used to determine problem solving skill levels.Data collection forms and questionnaires were applied with one-on-one interview technique. The voluntariness of the participants was taken as a basis in filling out the questionnaires. After the descriptive statistics (frequency, mean, standard deviation) of the socio-demographic data obtained and the scale scores and sub-dimension scores were made, two independent groups were compared by looking at their normal distribution conformity. The mean age of associate degree students participating in our study was 20.6 ± 1.26, and 20.8 ± 3.07 for undergraduate students. In comparisons made with PSI, which consists of three different sub-parameters, associate degree students are significantly more successful than undergraduate students in terms of "approach-avoidance", "personal control" and "problem solving questionnaire total score" (p>0.05). No difference was found in terms of "confidence in problem solving ability" sub-dimension. In the comparison of the Problem Solving Questionnaire by gender; no significant difference was found in sub-dimensions and total score(p>0.05). As a result; In all comparisons, problem solving abilities do not differ according to gender. The problem solving skill level was found to be moderate for both genders. As the education level increases; The psychological state, which has an effect on the quality of life, increases in the negative direction. In terms of problem solving abilities, a negative correlation was found with education level in all sub-categories.

ABSTRACT

Creativity is a multidimensional construct. Several different approaches have been developed to measure creativity, including psychometric scales. The Runco Ideational Behavior Scale (RIBS) is one such measure of creative ideation. The primary purpose of this paper was to assess the 23 items of the RIBS in the context of the Thai language and examine scale reliability and validity. Participants, consisting of 508 undergraduate students selected from five Thai public universities, were selected through a convenience sampling approach involving both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results suggested that the Thai version of the RIBS presented a valid measure to a certain extent. Factor analysis of the empirical data indicated a two-dimensional structure. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) results confirmed that the two-factor construct demonstrated a better fit with improved psychometric characteristics. Six items were eliminated from the Thai RIBS version inventory: five items during explanatory factor analysis (EFA) and one during the CFA process. Results will contribute to ascertaining that the Thai version of the RIBS instrument can be used as a self-assessment tool for measuring students' creative ideation. Implications and limitations of this research are discussed with suggestions for future studies. (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare two nickel-titanium systems (rotary vs. reciprocating) for their acceptance by undergraduate students who experienced nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments for the first time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-one sophomore dental students were first taught on manual root canal preparation with stainless-steel files. After that, they were instructed on the use of ProTaper Universal system (PTU, Dentsply Maillefer), then the WaveOne (WO, Dentsply Maillefer). They practiced with each system on 2 extracted molars, before using those files to shape the buccal or mesial canals of additional first molars. A questionnaire was completed after using each file system, seeking students' perception about 'Ease of use', 'Flexibility', 'Cutting-efficiency', 'Screwing-effect', 'Feeling-safety', and 'Instrumentation-time' of the NiTi files, relative to stainless-steel instrumentation, on a 5-point Likert-type scale. They were also requested to indicate their preference between the two systems. Data was compared between groups using t-test, and with Chi-square test for correlation of each perception value with the preferred choice (p = 0.05). RESULTS: Among the 81 students, 55 indicated their preferred file system as WO and 22 as PTU. All scores were greater than 4 (better) for both systems, compared with stainless-steel files, except for 'Screwing-effect' for PTU. The scores for WO in the categories of 'Flexibility', 'Screwing-effect', and 'Feeling-safety' were significantly higher scores than those of PTU. A significant association between the 'Screwing-effect' and students' preference for WO was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Novice operators preferred nickel-titanium instruments to stainless-steel, and majority of them opted for reciprocating file instead of continuous rotating system.
