ABSTRACT

Radiation therapy is a modality that is presenting great advances in veterinary medicine worldwide. In Brazil, this therapeutic option is underachieved. The success of this method depends on several factors, including the use of appropriate accessories for protection and immobilization of patients. For the immobilization of small animals during treatment, in addition to sedation and anesthesia, immobilizing accessories, similar to those used in human radiotherapy, are used. This study aimed to present proposals for immobilizing accessories adapted to the positioning of small animals in order to be used in radiotherapy planning. In order to achieve results, accessories were made and tested in a living animal simulating a radiotherapy planning, which proved to be favorable to use in positioning small animals undergoing radiotherapy and for implementation processes.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective To present novel measures in endoscopic removal of foreign bodies in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Methods The clinical trial performed a retrospective analysis of emergency endoscopic management of 251 cases of foreign bodies in the upper gastrointestinal tract from January 2013 to November 2016. The patients underwent gastric endoscopic examinations under local pharyngeal anesthesia or general intravenous anesthesia. Flexible endoscopes and retrieval accessories such as rat-tooth and alligator forceps, polyp snares, polyp graspers, dormia basket, lithotripter or grasping forceps or rubber gloves were used for the endoscopic procedures. We reviewed of patients' general data (age, sex, type of foreign body), type of anaesthesia, foreign bodies' locations, type of accessory, complications, success rate. Results A total of 251 foreign bodies were definitely diagnosed through endoscopy, 248 foreign bodies were successfully removed with compatible devices according to the foreign bodies' location, nature, and size, and 3 cases failed. At the same time, 192 cases had little mucosal laceration and bleeding, and 45 cases were found to have underlying diseases. 1cases had esophageal surgery and 1cases had laryngeal surgery. 1 cases refuse to remove the foreign body because no symptoms and therapheutic risks. Conclusion Emergency endoscopic management is the foremost option for foreign bodies in the upper gastrointestinal tract, for its obvious advantages in safety, efficiency, low cost, and minimal invasion. Endoscopic intervention can also diagnose early underlying digestive diseases. Innovative measures can increase the successful rate of removing foreign bodies with gastric endoscopy.

ABSTRACT

Endoscopic accessories describe an extensive variety of auxiliary instruments used for diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. Various endoscopic accessories have been developed over the previous few decades and are mostly used for treating neoplastic lesions, such as early gastrointestinal (GI) carcinomas and premalignant lesions. Because of extensive research on natural orifice endoluminal surgery (NOTES) in the early 2000s and recent technological developments, new devices have been developed for various advanced endoluminal therapeutic procedures. In particular, a remarkable development of endoscopic management was achieved in the field of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obesity. In both conditions, there is treatment gap between medical and surgical therapy. A large proportion of the patients who do not respond to medical treatment and lifestyle modification, still hesitate to directly undergo surgical treatment. To bridge this gap, endoscopic management has been receiving increasing attention. In this article, I review endoscopic and/or endoluminal devices used for the treatment of GERD and obesity with proposed mechanisms of their function.

ABSTRACT

Background & objectives: With increasing use of soft contact lenses the incidence of contact lens induced infections is also increasing. This study was aimed to assess the knowledge of new and existing contact lens users about the risk of microbial contamination associated with improper use and maintenance of contact lenses, type of microbial flora involved and their potential to cause ophthalmic infections. Methods: Four samples each from 50 participants (n=200) were collected from the lenses, lens care solutions, lens care solution bottles and lens cases along with a questionnaire regarding their lens use. The samples were inoculated onto sheep blood agar, Mac Conkey’s agar and Sabouraud’s dextrose agar. Organisms were identified using standard laboratory protocols. Results: Overall rate of microbial contamination among the total samples was 52 per cent. The most and the least contaminated samples were found to be lens cases (62%) and lens care solution (42%), respectively. The most frequently isolated contaminant was Staphylococcus aureus (21%) followed by Pseudomonas species (19.5%). Majority (64%) of the participants showed medium grade of compliance to lens cleaning practices. Rate of contamination was 100 and 93.75 per cent respectively in those participants who showed low and medium compliance to lens care practices as compared to those who had high level of compliance (43.75%) (pP<0.05). Interpretation & conclusions: Lens care practices amongst the participants were not optimum which resulted into high level contamination. Hence, creating awareness among the users about the lens care practices and regular cleaning and replacements of lens cases are required.
