ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The Japan Society for Oriental Medicine has established various committees, which are working every day to disseminate Japanese traditional herbal medicine (Kampo) and support the activities of academic members. As the members of the International Committee and the medical doctors who conduct research and clinical practice of Kampo at the university hospital, the authors participated in the 14th International Congress on Complementary Medicine Research held in Australia in May 2019. To improve the international recognition and international dissemination of Japanese Kampo, we held the Japanese Kampo Symposium on gastrointestinal diseases successfully. While it was realized that there was an international big interest in Japanese Kampo, it seemed that Kampo researchers in Japan lack the ability to dispatch of information at international conferences compared to neighboring countries such as Korea and China.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Present study aims at developing and validating an improved RP-HPLC method for determination of Swertiamarin from extracts of Swertia densifolia (Griseb.) Kashyap leaves and marketed herbal formulations. Methods: Developed RP-HPLC method is validated and is used for determination of Swertiamarin from hydroalcoholic extracts of test plant material and marketed herbal formulations. The separation is carried out on C18 column. The mobile phase used is 10 mM Ammonium acetate: Acetonitrile: Formic acid in ratio 90:10:0.2% (v/v/v/). The wavelength selected is 237 nm using UV detector. Results and Discussion: A seven-point calibration curve over the concentration range of 50.00 –20000.00 ng/mL for Swertiamarin provides an optimum linear detector response (with r2>0.9970). The % R.S.D. (n = 6) for the low, middle and high quality control samples are within <6.44 and < 9.04 for inter-day and intra-day precision and accuracy respectively. Conclusion: A simple, sensitive and precise method is developed for quantitation of SWM. Method is validated as per International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines and its applicability is demonstrated by successful measurement of Swertiamarin from hydroalcoholic extracts of Swertia densifolia leaves and selected marketed herbal formulations.

ABSTRACT

Primary Health Care (PHC) still represents the biggest international effort by countries to reach health worldwide; the approach and needs to be assumed are still valid 30 years after the International Conference of Alma-Ata 1978. The struggle to achieve Health for All and its strategies are long and convoluted. It does not start in Alma Ata as it appears in most of the texts, but most stunning is that most pioneers of PHC are ignored in the most cited PHC documents. The new generations of health professionals and workers do not know about people such as Henry Sigerist, Salvador Allende, Gustavo Molina, Sidney Kark, Franco Basaglia, Cesar Uribe Piedrahita, Hector Abad or Santiago Rengifo. Retrieving the names of people who fought is very important today for the Colombian public health.
