ABSTRACT
The course Bioremediation of Environmental Pollution, which plays a vital role in the professional training system, is a professional elective course for college students majored in environmental science, environmental engineering and agricultural resources and environment. In view of the problems identified in previous teaching experiences, the teachers carried out teaching reform to meet the demand for high-quality personnel training. The teaching reform included optimization of course objectives, reconstruction of course content and knowledge integration, reform and innovation of teaching methods. The practices indicate that a reformed curriculum teaching significantly improves the achievement of the teaching objectives. Moreover, it effectively enhances the students' independent learning, thinking and comprehensive knowledge application ability, achieving sound teaching effects.

En la educación médica contemporánea la necesidad de alcanzar una adecuada integración de conocimientos es universalmente aceptada. Sin embargo resulta contradictorio que no existe claridad en cuanto a los componentes terminológicos y metodológicos de tan importante aspecto. Esta situación ha generado confusiones que se manifiestan en los planes de estudio con la consiguiente afectación en las capacidades intelectuales que deben desarrollar los educandos. En el presente trabajo se realiza una aproximación conceptual y metodológica al controvertido tema de la integración de conocimientos. Se propone una distinción esencial entre los aspectos objetivos y subjetivos de la integración de conocimientos, su diferente significado metodológico, así como las ventajas y desventajas de privilegiar uno u otro aspecto en la práctica educativa. Se concluye que en la formación de profesionales de la salud resulta esencial la consecución de la integración de conocimientos en su vertiente subjetiva, se proponen recomendaciones de posible aplicación.
Nowadays the importance of knowledge integration attainment in medical education is widely accepted. Nevertheless the lack of precision regarding the terminological and methodological aspects of such a relevant subject is contradictory. This situation has given rise to a misunderstanding that manifests itself in the components of the curriculum affecting consequently the development of intellectual skills by students. In the present paper a conceptual and methodological approximation to the challenging subject of knowledge integration is done. We propose an essential distinction between the objective and subjective sides of knowledge integration, their different methodological meaning, as well as the advantages and shortcomings of privileging one or the other in teaching practice. As conclusion we consider that knowledge integration, in its subjective side, is of paramount importance in the formation of health professionals and we propose some recommendation regarding this goal.

Es objetivo del trabajo valorar la aplicación del modelo de currículo "integrado" para la carrera de Medicina en la Universidad Walter Sisulu. Se realizó una observación estructurada del plan de enseñanza integrado alrededor de la solución de problemas de salud. Se presentó una descripción del currículo con énfasis en la enseñanza de las ciencias básicas. Se valoraron los aspectos que podrían constituir ventajas o desventajas de este plan. Se destacan como elementos positivos el desarrollo en los estudiantes de habilidades de autoformación y comunicación, la formulación y evaluación de juicios e hipótesis, el temprano contacto con temas clínicos y epidemiológicos, y la participación en diferentes actividades de aprendizaje en la comunidad. Entre los inconvenientes se incluye el elevado número de docentes requeridos para las actividades tutelares, la limitada asimilación de elementos cognoscitivos sistematizadores y dificultades de orden organizativo.
To assess the application of an integrated curriculum model for the medical career in Walter Sisulu University. A structured observation of the integrated teaching plan in relation to the solution of health problems was made. The curriculum was described making emphasis on basic sciences. The advantageous or disadvantageous aspects of this plan were evaluated. The development of self-training and communication skills, the formulation and assessment of judgments and hypotheses, the early contact with clinical and epidemiologic topics, and the participation in different learning activities in the community were stressed as positive elements. The high number of professors required for tutelary activities, the limited assimilation of systematizing cognitive elements, and the organizational difficulties are some of the inconveniences observed.
