ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Focal Cortical Dysplasia (FCD) is a group of focal developmental malformations of the cerebral cortex cytoarchitecture. FCD usually manifests as medically intractable epilepsy, especially in young children. Live patients are diagnosed by radiological examination such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET), magnetoencephalography (MEG), diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI), and intracranial electroencephalogram (EEG). While some cases can be missed by radiological examination, they are usually diagnosed on the histopathological examination of the surgically removed specimens of medically intractable epilepsy patients. We report a case of a young girl with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, and seizure disorder who died in her sleep. The deceased was diagnosed with FCD type III with hippocampal sclerosis on histopathological examination at autopsy. H & E stain and NeuN immunohistochemistry neuronal cell marker were used to demonstrate the findings of FCD.

ABSTRACT

Severe acute respiratory syndromecoronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) enters cells using the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which are expressed by the respiratory tract endothelium, epithelial cells of the stomach, duodenum, ileum, rectum, cholangiocytes, and hepatocytes. Pathological examinations of these organs are not feasible method of diagnosis but can explain pathological changes, pathogenesis of the disease, and the cause of death in COVID-19 cases. In this review, we performed a literature search for COVID-19-related pathological changes seen during post-mortem examinations in different organs of the body including the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidney, skin, heart and blood. Our findings showed that SARS-CoV-2 has damaging effects on many organs, probably due to the host immune responses to the presence of the virus. It is recommended that both antiviral and immunomodulatory agents should be considered in the management of COVID-19 patients for better prognosis, and clinical outcome

ABSTRACT

After reviewing the medical literature of various classifications of blast injuries, we present a proposal called the Bogotá Classification, aimed at the study of cadavers with injuries present in cases of death caused by explosion. We also present a case that occurred in a residence in the city of Bogotá involving an improvised explosive device, resulting in three deaths.

ABSTRACT

Traditionally autopsy has been classified as legal autopsy and pathology autopsy. For this classification, the purpose of the autopsy was the criteria. That is under what condition autopsy was performed decided the nature of the autopsy. From the point of MD who actually perform the autopsy, there seems little difference between legal and pathology autopsy. Our society expands as time goes on, and it has become more complex. With this there have been many situations that does not coincide with the conventional way of thinking. Under these circumstances there have been some situations that conventional way for the autopsy classification bears problem. System for the postmortem investigation in Korea are deeply linked with these. Authors report these cases with the review of our postmortem investigation system and discuss what MD can do right now.

ABSTRACT

With the development of medical technique and the improvement of society, more and people are paying attention to the ethics of death. But the ethics on forensic autopsy-the wildly used technology-lagged behind. We discussed the subject related to forensic autopsy in theory and practice, expecting to have an advanced research.
