ABSTRACT

Background: With the advancement of technology young generation i.e. students are friendlier with the electronic media for communication and understanding the concept. While some students still think that the older method such as use of blackboard is the better way for understanding or explains the concept. There are various studies were conducted to understand the perception of students regarding various teaching and learning media in overall curriculum but very few are conducted in students led seminar. Aim and Objectives: To compare the perception of students to the blackboard presentation and to the power point presentation in students led seminar. Material and Methods: A pre-designed, pretested self-administered questionnaire was prepared regarding perception of students on blackboard and PowerPoint presentation in learning process. Total 15 parameters were included in the questionnaire. Results: In this study 54% of students prefer the PowerPoint presentation (PPT) over the blackboard presentation (46%) as the best teaching method in the seminar. With the PPT presentation better demonstrations of clinical conditions and important points can be recalled during summarization of the topic. Blackboard teaching stimulates the interest and more stress on important point is given. Students and presenter’s interaction is better in Blackboard presentation. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that seminar delivered using PPT was more appreciated and preferred by the students.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

In this study, 155 residents who participated in the standardized residency training in neurology department of Second Affiliated Hospital of Army Medical University from 2016 to 2018 were included, all of whom were medical university graduates. The training duration in neurology department was 3 months. Each physician was assigned the first mock exam to each of his tutors and took the one to one mode to carry out clinical practice teaching. First, theoretical teaching, then clinical observation, and finally clinical practice. In addition, a typical case seminar was held every two weeks. After the combined teaching, the average scores of theoretical examination were (96.78 ± 10.14) points, and the average scores of operation examination was also significantly increased (98.36 ± 11.38) points. The percentage of excellent people assessed by Mini-CEX scale was as high as 88%. The teaching approach of tutorial and seminar teaching model not only consolidates medical theory knowledge, improves clinical skills, but also enhances the ability of analyzing and solving problems and contributes to establishment of rigorous clinical thinking, which lays a solid foundation for training excellent neurology clinical specialists.

ABSTRACT

Background: Medical schools in India are changing their educational programs and teaching strategies to ensure that students have active responsibility for their learning process and are prepared for lifelong, self-directed learning. Small group teaching (SGT) is one such tool which helps to make learning process student-centered. In this study, we have assessed the effectiveness of SGTs as a supplement to didactic lecture (DL). Objective: The objective of the study was to compare the effectiveness of tutorials versus seminar as a supplement to lecture class. Materials and Methods: In Department of Physiology, SVIMS, Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women, a DL class on a topic was taken for 150 1st year MBBS students which were followed by tutorials for one half of students and seminar for other half of students on the same topic. It was done for two topics. An assessment was done each at the end of DL, tutorials, and seminar. Students were also asked to fill a feedback questionnaire about the SGTs on a Likert scale. Results: Tutorials showed statistically significant increase in scores in both the topics (6.955 ± 1.83, P = –0.012 and 6.65 ± 1.78, P = 0.006) whereas seminar showed statistically significant increase in only the first topic as compared to DL (6.84 ± 1.77, P = 0.013 and 6.27 ± 2.09, P = 0.25). There was no significant difference in scores between tutorials and seminar. Likert scale showed positive feedback about SGTs and students wanted more such sessions. Conclusions: Since there was a positive response from students regarding SGTs as a supplement to DL, we would like to adopt a mixed approach with SGT as a component of the overall course to ensure knowledge acquisition and retention by the students.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

In the areas of home medical care and self-medication, the role of the pharmacist is growing, partly as a result of Japan’s aging society and the need to reduce medical costs. In response, the Kinki University Faculty of Pharmacy implemented a physical assessment practical training seminar in order to improve the physical assessment skills of practicing pharmacists. A series of questionnaires were conducted among pharmacists to investigate their perceptions of physical assessment practical training seminars. The results of the questionnaires were analyzed using Customer Satisfaction (CS) analysis and text mining. Based on a 5-point scale (1-low∼5-high), questionnaires revealed satisfaction for physical assessment practical training seminars was 4.6±0.6 (Ave.±S.D.). CS analysis revealed that the items “lectures” and “case seminars” had the highest level of satisfaction. However, items showing low levels of satisfaction were “auscultation of respiratory sounds” and “SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation).” Results of text mining suggested a relationship between “physical assessment” and “difficult”. Analysis of the questionnaires showed a high level satisfaction with physical assessment practical training seminars, notably physical assessment practice methods. However, CS analysis and text mining indicate the finer techniques of physical assessment were difficult to acquire.

ABSTRACT

Background: Japanese medical student education lacks emphasis on teaching clinical reasoning skills. To partially remedy this situation, we developed a prototypic web-based module for tutors to teach clinical reasoning. We report the medical students’ opinions of this module.
Methods: Twenty-four students from two Japanese medical universities were randomly assigned to the two tutored virtual classrooms, each classroom with six students, or to the self-study group, 12 students, after taking the Internet-based Sequential Question and Answer pretest. After four weeks, each of the 24 students took the Sequential Question and Answer posttest. The entire 24 students answered a questionnaire about the Sequential Question and Answer tests; all 12 tutored students answered a questionnaire about the web-based tutored module.
Results: Although both tutored and self-study Sequential Question and Answer posttest scores increased, the increases of the tutored group’s posttest compared to the self-study posttest group were not statistically significant (p = 0.066). Ninety-two percent of the students rated the Sequential Question and Answer tests as an improved way to learn case presentation and clinical reasoning. Moreover, 79% of students felt that the Sequential Question and Answer tests were an effective way to learn clinical information. The tutored students rated the web-based tutored seminars as an ‘excellent to fair’ method to learn clinical reasoning using a five-point ‘excellent to poor’ scale.
Conclusions: We developed a prototypic web-based module for tutors to teach clinical reasoning to medical students. The students’ opinion supported the modular components of the web-based seminar format, Sequential Question and Answer test, and the tutoring syllabus as an effective way to improve learning clinical reasoning, case presentation, and medical information. Students also suggested refinements of the prototypic module.

ABSTRACT

Image processing research group applied immersive experience into “medical image processing”. A scheme named “introduction by game, case driven, lecture on specific theme, grouping experiment, and seminar”was designed and practiced. We designed a game for each subject and made students immersed in the game to feel the pleasure of learning. We changed the traditional teaching method which focused on every point of knowledge, presented and then decomposed the case before teaching each knowledge point which was related to the case. By grouping experiment and seminar, students can learn actively. We also developed a virtual experiment platform with .NET and Matlab for students to develop learning.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine how the discussion about gender category has been going on currently. For that, we seek to analyze the published productions in the annals of the International Seminar "Undoing Gender", held in 2013, in Natal (RN), because it is an event which discusses the gender category and as the event's name suggests, the proposal is "deconstruct / undo the genre", that is, we see the influence of queer theory since event the title. The criterion for choosing sample was oral communications that contained the word gender in its title, considering that this is the focus of our discussion. It analyzed 51 works and it found the prevalence of analyzes related to queer theory. In these studies, that are based on subjectivist perspectives, there is, in our view, an excessive appreciation of speech, encouraging individualism and superficiality, favoring therefore the order of the capital.
