ABSTRACT

Abstract This was a forthcoming study of those patients, who undergo in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and freeze-all embryo, who acquiesce for the study. The number of participated patients (n=350) in this study, underwent for IVF. The blood sample was collected from patients to evaluate the level of serum progesterone in vacuum vials on the day of ovulation trigger. After 36 hrs of ovulation trigger, ovum picked up was done. Quantitative methods were used to estimate the level of serum progesterone through the electrochemiluminescence immunoassay and correlation of serum progesterone with embryo transfer (ET) outcomes. Main outcome of this current study was to evaluate the value of mean serum progesterone level i.e.0.868± 0.712 ng/ml and 0.88±0.723 ng/ml was found in case of pregnancy positive and negative respectively, at p=0.216 value. In antagonist (n=40) and agonist (n=310) cases, it was 8(20%) and 37(11.94%) PL occurrence was noted at p=0.143 respectively. An overall value of the premature lutenization (PL) occurrences was 13.63% and 15.25% observed in both positive and negative cases of pregnancy at p=0.216 respectively. This study concluded that 12.66% of PL occurrences were recorded in the case of IVF. Study results proved, there were no significant effect of PL on pregnancy outcomes.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To analyze the correlation of serum progesterone (PROG) level with blood biochemical parameters and common traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes in male patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).@*METHODS@#We collected the clinical data of 192 male patients with T2DM, who were admitted in the Department of Endocrinology, Nanjing Hospital of Chinese Medical Affiliated to Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine between January, 2018 and March, 2019. The general clinical data, C-peptide level, blood glucose level, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), HOMA, blood lipid level, and sex hormones were compared between the patients with normal PROG and elevated PROG levels and also between the patients with two common TCM syndromes, namely and deficiency syndrome and damp- heat accumulation in the spleen syndrome. We further compared the sex hormones, C-peptide level, HOMA, HbA1c, and blood glucose level among the patients with the two TCM syndromes having normal or elevated PROG levels.@*RESULTS@#Compared with those in patients with normal PROG level, BMI, C-peptide, HOMA-β, and HOMA2-IR were significantly lowered and HOMA-IS, E2, and T were significantly increased in patients with elevated PROG level; no statistical differences were found in age, disease duration, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), smoking history, blood pressure, blood glucose, blood lipids, HbA1c, LH, FSH or PRL between the two groups. Compared with the patients with damp-heat accumulation syndrome group, the patients with and deficiency syndrome were older and had a longer disease duration, a greater BMI, and higher levels of PROG, C-Peptide, HOMA-β, HOMA2-IR and HOMA-IS, but the smoking history, WHR, HbA1c, blood glucose, and sex hormone levels were comparable between the two groups. Among the 4 groups of patients with different PROG levels and TCM syndromes, significant differences were found in the levels of C-peptide, HOMA-β, HOMA-IS, HOMA2-IR, PROG, E2, T, LH and FSH, and the patients with and deficiency syndrome as well as an elevated PROG level had the lowest C-peptide level, HOMA-β and HOMA2-IR and the highest HOMA-IS, PROG, E2, T, LH and FSH.@*CONCLUSIONS@#An elevated PROG level is closely related to islet cell dysfunction and TCM syndrome types in male patients with T2DM.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To study the accuracy of estimation of single serum progesterone level in predicting early pregnancy outcome in symptomatic women with inconclusive USG MATERIALAND METHODS: 70 women with gestational age less than 12 weeks fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included in the study. RESULTS: Out of 70 women, the follow up scan revealed 33 viable pregnancies and 37 non-viable pregnancies. Mean serum progesterone was significantly higher in viable pregnancy group (16.318± 7.29 ng/ml), compared with non-viable pregnancy group (8.07± 5.878ng/ml) and the association was found to be statistically significant with a ‘p’ value of 0.0001. Serum progesterone of 10ng/ml has sensitivity of 72.97% in predicting a non-viable pregnancy and specificity of 81.81% in predicting viable pregnancy. CONCLUSION: Single serum progesterone value of less than 10ng/ml can be a useful test in predicting early pregnancy failure in symptomatic patients with inconclusive USG.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effects of baicalin on serum progesterone and related hormones in female normal and cerebral ischemia rats; To explore whether baicalin plays a role in cerebral protection of neurological functions by regulating progesterone levels. Methods With vaginal smear method, the adult estrus female SD rats were selected and divided into normal group, baicalin normal group, and molding groups. The left side of the middle cerebral artery of rats in the molding groups was blocked to establish the permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO). After modeling, the rats were randomly divided into model group, baicalin treatment group, progesterone treatment group and progesterone inhibitor group. The baicalin normal group and baicalin treatment group were given intraperitoneal injection of baicalin solution; the normal group and model group were given normal saline of the same quantity; progesterone treatment group was given intramuscular injection of progesterone; progesterone inhibitor group was given intraperitoneal injection of baicalin solution and intragastric administration of mifepristone solution. The neurological function deficit scores were evaluated and rat forelimb holding power was detected by Grip Strength Meter respectively at different time points. Serum was taken from the rats and the progesterone and related hormones levels in the serum of every group were measured by ELISA. Results Compared with normal group, neurological functions of rats in molding groups were damaged, and neural functional behavior scores of different time points were the most strongly increased (P0.05) and more significant improvement of the forelimb holding power (P0.05).Conclusion After applying mifepristone to block progesterone, baicalin neurologic protection is significantly inhibited. The results demonstrated that baicalin may play a role in cerebral protection via up-regulating serum progesterone level.

ABSTRACT

Background & objectives: Cyclical changes in the hormonal levels determine different phases of menstrual cycle. These variations in hormonal levels are also responsible for variations in functional parameters of many systems in the body. Many studies have highlighted the changes in respiratory parameters in different phases of menstrual cycle. In this study, we have explored the factors that influence lung function in adolescent girls focusing on the hormonal factors related to the menstrual cycle. Methods: 36 adolescent girls with normal menstrual cycle consented for the study. Pulmonary functions and serum progesterone were measured during follicular and secretory phase of menstrual cycle after a detailed menstrual history and screening for medical illness. Results : show a significantly higher serum progesterone and FVC, FEV1 and PEFR during secretory phase. There was a strong positive correlation of Serum progesterone in secretory phase with FVC and negative correlation with FEV1%. Interpretation & conclusion: This improvement of pulmonary function during secretory phase is due to increase in serum progesterone levels which have a dual effect of overall smooth muscle relaxation and hyperventilation. Supplement of progesterone may be useful to avert premenstrual asthma and enhance the performance.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the predictive value of initial serum B-hCG and progesterone measurement for pregnancy outcome in IVF-ET. METHODS: Serum B-hCG at 11-12th day after embryo transfer and progesterone at 7th day after oocyte aspiration were measured in 48 successful pregnant IVF-ET cases from July 1993 to June 1997. RESULTS: Of 48 cases, 26 cases (54.2%) successfully carried to sustaining gestation and 22 cases (45.8%) failed to sustain gestation. The estimated initial serum B-hCG levels in the normal sustaining pregnancy group (132.28+ 22.42 mlU/ml) were statistical significantly higher than 29.43+8.08 mIU/ml in the failed sustaining pregnancy group (p<0.001), while the estimated initial serum progesterone levels showed no significant differences (p=0.159). In order to determine the predictive values using the Receiver Operator Curve (ROC), an appropriate cutoff value of 38 mIU/ml for initial serum B-hCG was obtained. In IVF-ET pregnancies, the estimated serum B-hCG levels in cases of chemical abortion in failed sustaining pregnancy were significantly lower compared to the normal sustaining pregnancy group (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The initial serum B-hCG levels at 11 days after embryo transfer could be used to predict the pregnancy outcome in an IVF program. An initial progesterone level acquired on the 7th day after oocyte retrieval is not a useful indicator to predict pregnancy outcome.
