ABSTRACT

Objective:To discuss the efficacy of modified Qingzao Jiufei Tang combined with adjuvant chemotherapy on quality of life and survival period of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the moderation effect on immune function and cytokines. Method:One hundred and twenty patients were randomly divided into control group (60 cases) and observation group (60 cases) by random number table. Patients in two group got paclitaxel and cisplatin chemotherapy. The control group took Yifei Qinghua granules orally,2 bags/time,3 times/day. In addition to the therapy of control group, patients in observation group were added with modified Qingzao Jiufei Tang from the first day after chemotherapy to the 12th week after chemotherapy, 1 dose/day. Six-month and one-year survival rates and survival period were recorded. Before and after treatment, lung cancer quality of life scale (FACT-L 4.0) and M.D. Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI-C) were scored. And levels of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ and CD4+/CD8+ , natural killer cells (NK), cytokeratin 19 fragment 21-1 (CYFRA21-1), squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 were all detected. Result:The 6-month survival rate of in observation group was 78.33%(47/60), which was higher than 60.00%(36/60) in control group (χ2=4.728, P<0.05). The one-year survival rate in observation group was 48.33%(29/60), which was higher than 30.00%(18/60) in control group (χ2=4.232, P<0.05). And the survival period in observation group was 15 months, which was longer than 11 months in control group (P<0.01). And scores of FACT-L and various factors were all higher than those in control group (P<0.01). Scores of disease symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue symptoms and emotional symptoms were all lower than those in control group (P<0.01), and scores of effect of symptoms on daily life in six aspects, such as enjoyment of life, were all lower than those in control group (P<0.01). And levels of NK, CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+/CD8+ were higher than those in control group (P<0.05), while levels of CD8+, TGF-β1, NF-κB, ICAM-1, VEGF, CYFRA21-1, SCC-Ag and NSE were all lower than those in control group (P<0.01). Conclusion:Modified Qingzao Jiufei Tang combined with adjuvant chemotherapy can prolong the survival time, improve the survival rate, alleviate the effect of symptoms on daily life, improve the quality of life, inhibit the expression of tumor markers and cytokines, and stabilize the immune function of the body, with a positive clinical significance in improving the prognosis of NSCLC.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To study the expression of coagulation factorⅢin patients with non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC)with hyperco-agulability and its clinical significance, and to explore the relationship between its expression level and the clinicopathological features and the survival period. Methods:There were 74 patients with NSCLC with hypercoagulability and 42 without hypercoagulability,con-firmed using pathological and biochemical tests in Yunnan Cancer Hospital from January 2013 to October 2014.The enzyme-linked im-munosorbent assay(ELISA)was performed to detect the expression of serum coagulation factorⅢand its relationship with clinico-pathological features and prognosis was analyzed. Results:Serum coagulation factorⅢlevel in patients with hypercoagulable NSCLC before chemotherapy was 560.32-200.34 ng/L,which was significantly higher than that in patients without hypercoagulability(463.29-159.22 ng/L)(P=0.008),and significantly higher than that in patients after chemotherapy(471.39±160.31 ng/L)(P=0.000).Serum coag-ulation factorⅢlevel in patients with hypercoagulable state of NSCLC was related to lymph node metastasis(P=0.026),distant metas-tasis(P=0.025),and tumor-node-metastasis staging(P=0.007).They were negatively correlated with prothrombin time(r=?0.638,P=0.032)and activated partial thromboplastin time(r=?0.702,P=0.028),and positively correlated with fibrinogen(r=0.715,P=0.008)and platelets (r=0.597,P=0.007).The 1-to 3-year overall survival of patients with NSCLC with high coagulation factorⅢexpression was significantly lower than that of patients with low coagulation factorⅢexpression. Conclusions: The expression level of serum coagu-lation factorⅢin patients with high coagulation state of NSCLC is related to lymph node metastasis and TNM staging, which has cer-tain guiding significance for predicting the survival of patients.

ABSTRACT

Incubation period of HIV to AIDS is a vital tool that plays an important role in estimating the longevity or survivability of the HIV infected patients. However, death of AIDS patients when considered as end point becomes meaningful while finding the actual survivability of an individual. The present study is focused in analyzing the data on 343 AIDS patients who were recommended to undergo treatment in the ART centre followed up for a period of 6 years. The study included a cohesive treatment of censored observations based on lost to follow-up, deaths, recovered and alive cases till the end of study as well as uncensored observations. On the basis of diagnosed AIDS cases, the estimates of survivability under various conditions have been obtained. This paper also incorporates the trend of survivability for the reported AIDS patients with respect to age, sex, stages and mode of transmission across these 6 years. Kaplan Meier estimation method and Cox proportional hazard model were applied to determine the effect of various covariates that may be responsible for the death of the AIDS patients, survival pattern.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Despite concern about prevention of dermatophytosis, little is known about the survival period of dermatophytes. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to investigate the survival period of dermatophytes according to various environmental conditions. METHODS: Scales for testing were collected from skin lesions of 25 patients with dermatophytosis. They were categorised into different treatment groups: kept scales themselves(S), scales in a humid condition(S+H), scales mixed with sterilized dusts(S+D), and scales mixed with sterilized dusts in a humid condition(S+D+H). They were then cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar once a week until there was no colony growth. Data was evaluated with the Mann-Whitney U-test. RESULTS: 1) The mean survival period of Microsporum canis isolated from 5 patients with tinea(T.) capitis was 17.6(S+D+H), 16.6(S+D), 8.4(S+H) and 7 weeks(S). 2) The mean survival period of Trichophyton rubrum isolated from 20 patients of T. corporis, T. cruris, T. pedis & T. unguium was 11.8, 7.4, 9.4 and 12.2 weeks(S+D+H); 7.4, 6.8, 9.2 and 7.4 weeks(S+D); 6.6, 3.4, 8.0 and 10.4 weeks(S+H); 5.0, 2.8, 5.4, 8.2 weeks(S), respectively. CONCLUSION: We found that the survival period of dermatophytes was longest in scales mixed with sterilized dusts in a humid condition.
