ABSTRACT

Since the first application of whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) to brain metastases in 1950 s,it has been regarded as a standard treatment for brain metastases of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Recently, more accurate radiotherapy technique and more effective systemic therapy have been developed.Especially, the molecular targeted drugs are upgraded rapidly with stronger targeting capability and better permeability of the central nervous system. With the prolonged survival of patients,long-term damage to the nervous system induced by WBRT causes widespread concerns. This article will review the related controversies and research progress in the application of WBRT to NSCLC with brain metastases in modern integrated therapy.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the associations of preoperative plasma levels of platelet and fibrinogen with clinicopatho-logic parameters in rectal cancer patients after curative resection .Methods From January 2011 to February 2014 ,a total of 302 rec-tal cancer patients underwent curative resection .And their relevant clinical data were reviewed .The preoperative plasma levels of platelet and fibrinogen were examined ,the correlation of clinicopathologic findings .The logistic regression analysis was used for for multivariate analysis .Results (1)Elevated plasma levels of platelet were associated with histologic grade ,gross type ,degree of dif-ferentiation ,invasion depth ,tumor stage and lymph node involvement(P0 .05) .(3)Multivariate analysis showed that the platelet count ,fibrinogen ,ethnic ,degree of differentiation ,gross type were independent risk factors to rectal cancer(P<0 .01) .(3)PLT and FIB were correlated in tumor metastases(r=0 .348 ,P<0 .01) ,and the combined detection of them could increase the sensitivity and accuracy on prediction of tumor metastases .Conclusion Elevated plasma levels of platelet and fibrinogen are both associated with metastases in rectal cancer ,and the combined detection of them are important for the early diagnosis of rectal cancer metastases .

ABSTRACT

Cases of metastases from extracranial tumor to intracranial tumor are very rare. The world wide review of the literatures until 1992 revealed 44 cases of primary intracranial tumors containing metastatic tumors which are unrelated extracranial primary malignant tumors; the intracranial recipient tumor is a meningioma in 35 cases among them. Carcinomas of the lung and the breast are the most common extracranial donor tumors. Metastases from colon cancer to meningioma are extremely rare. A 74 year-old-female presented with headache for 2 weeks. CT revealed a round mass with high signal intensity, measuring 4 cm in diameter, which is located in the left parietal lobe. The patient had colon cancer 2 years ago and lymphoma I year ago. On operation, the tumor is relatively well delineated and attached to the meninx. Microscopically, the tumor is composed of fascicles of long slender, fibroblast-like spindle cells with indistinct cytoplasmic border, variable amount of collagen deposit and many psammoma bodies. A few scattered glands are present in periphery of the meningioma. The tumor glands are composed of columnar cells with basally located hyperchromatic nuclei and similiar to the glands of the adenocarcinoma of the colon.
