ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to histologically evaluate the tissue reaction to implantation of polyurethane disks containing castor oil produced in premolded form, supplied commercially, and biomass molded at the moment of application; since a late tissue reaction may occur during the total hardening process of the biomaterial. Twenty female Wistar rats, about 3 months of age, weighing 300-350g, and polyurethane disks 0.8cm in diameter and 0.5cm in thickness were used. The premolded disk was implanted into the subcutaneous tissue at the right flank and the molded biomass disk at the left flank. Five rats each were submitted to euthanasia at 3, 7, 15 and 30 days after surgery, and the polyurethane disks and surrounding tissue were collected. The specimens were processed for HE staining and examined microscopically. A moderate inflammatory reaction was primarily composed of polymorphonuclear cells and macrophages. The lymphocytes varied from absent to discreet. The intensity of the inflammatory reaction decreased at the same time the formation of fibrous conjunctive tissue increased around the implants. However, the numbers of macrophages remained the same. In conclusion, both polyurethane disks induce the same type of inflammatory reaction that varies from slight to moderate according to evaluation time.

ABSTRACT

The files of histopathological exams carried out by the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (LPV-UFSM), between January 2000 and March 2010, were reviewed in search of cases of equine sarcoid. Forty cases were selected to determine epidemiological aspects and anatomical distribution of the various clinical forms of these neoplasms in horses from Rio Grande do Sul. Out of the cases in which the ages were registered in the histopathological reports, 73.0 percent (27/37) were 1 to 5-year-old horses. Multiple sarcoids were observed in most of the affected horses (29/40 [72.5 percent]). The fibroblastic form was most frequently observed and occurred in 42.2 percent (27/64) of the cases. In more than half of the cases (22/40 [55.0 percent]), sarcoids had a multifocal distribution. Twenty two (55 percent) out of the 40 horses evaluated had the tumors in the limbs.

ABSTRACT

Meningiomas are frequent primary neoplasms of the central nervous system, usually benign and susceptible to healing through surgery. The clinical and morphological discoveries are presented in a study of 580 meningiomas diagnosed during the period 1980-2003. These tumors represented a 16% of the neoplasms of the central nervous system and most of them were unique (85% of the cases), with preferential intracranial localization and clinical manifestations related to the size and localization of the tumor. Women were affected more frequently (the rate female/male of 2.4:1) and patients with ages among 30 and 59 years (67% of the cases). According to the histologic classification of the World Health Organization, 80% of the meningiomas corresponded to histological grade I (benign), 17% to grade II (atypical) andonly 3% to grade III (malignant). The most frequent histological subtype was the transitional variant. It is important for the pathologist to recognize and classify adequately the meningiomas, since upon this depends the treatment and prognosis of this frequent kind of neoplasm

ABSTRACT

The histological grade of the Wordl Health Organization and the extension of the initial surgical resection have been considered determining prognostic factors inmeningiomas. Nevertheless, a recurrence rate close to 20% in benign meningiomas completely resected arises the need of considering new prognostic factors. In orderto estimate the importance of the histological grade and to determine the influence of clinical and morphological factors upon the risk of recurrences in meningiomas, a comparative clinical-pathological study was carried out on 580 tumors (belonging to 532 patients). Progression of the histological grade was evident in a significant percentage of male patients in addition to a major invasive quality of the tumor to adjacent structures and a higher percentage of recurrent tumors, while the age of the patient, the localization and size of the tumor, the extension of the initial surgical resection and the interval free from recurrencies, did not vary with the histological grade. No significant differences were observed when comparing non recurrent meningiomas and recurrent meningiomas with respect to the gender and age of the patients, histological grade, localization and size of the tumor, extension of the initial surgical resection and tumorous invasion of adjacent structures. While the histological grade of the meningiomas is important to predict their biological behaviour, there are no reliable clinical or morphological parameters able to determine the prognosis for a particular histological grade (especially within the group of benign meningiomas)
