ABSTRACT

Hexokinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were assayed in various circulating age fractions i.e., young, middle-aged and old red cell from control, diabetic and insulin-treated diabetic rats. An increase in the activity of hexokinase was observed in three age-wise separated fractions of red cells from diabetic animals in comparison to control. The activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase on the other hand decreased in separated ageing fractions of diabetic red cells when compared to control. Reversal of these two enzymes were observed in insulin-treated diabetic rats. The levels of glycosylated haemoglobin and catecholamines were found to increase with ageing red cells in controls and also increased in red cells plasma.

ABSTRACT

Serum levels of phosphohexose isomerase (PHI), aldolase (ALD) and hexokinase (HK) activities have been determined in 76 patients of carcinoma cervix, in search of proper diagnostic and prognostic parameters. All the three glycolytic enzyme levels studied were found to be significantly elevated in all the groups of malignancy and showed a relation to the clinical stage and tumor. Serum PHI levels were of best diagnostic significance even at an early stage of the disease. The enzyme levels correlated well with the prognosis of the disease.

ABSTRACT

The serum phosphohexose isomerase (PHI), aldolase and hexokinase activities have been determined in 36 patients of carcinoma ovary with different clinical stages and in 25 healthy normal female subjects. The serum PHI and hexokinase levels were significantly elevated (P less than .001) in all the stages of malignancy while serum aldolase was significantly elevated only in stages III and IV of malignancy. The enzyme levels showed statistically significant response to therapy in stage II patients. The mean values in patients with progression of the disease were not significantly different.

ABSTRACT

The enzyme activities of Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). prostate fluid LDH isoenzymes phosphohexose isomerase (PHI), Aldolase (ALD) and Hexokinase (HK) were determined in the sera of 77 samples of males. There were 12 cases of carcinoma prostate with metastases, 15 without metastases, 25 with benign prostatic hypertrophy and 25 nontumor. The enzyme activities of nontumor and benign group were statistically similar. The prostatic fluid LDH5/LDH1 ratio and PHI has been found to be the most sensitive parameter for detecting carcinoma prostate. Serial determinations of LDH, PHI, ALD and HK were found valuable for following the course of the disease during therapy.

ABSTRACT

Serum aldolase and hexokinase levels were determined in 197 serum samples. There were 152 breast carcinoma cases comprising 26 of group I, 82 of group II and 44 of group III, 25 normal healthy female subjects and 20 benign. Activity of both the enzymes was normal in benign group but significantly higher activities were observed in advanced disease as compared to controls (P less than .001). The enzyme activity levels showed good correlation to the groups of the disease.
