ABSTRACT

The pattern of bone marrow infiltration in 40 consecutive cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas [NHLs] having marrow involvement is presented. For histological break-up, working formulation of NHLs was used. Low grade NHLs [50%] were the commonest, followed by intermediate [32.5%] and high grade NHLs [17.5%], respectively. Histologically small lymphocytic type [32.5%] was the commonest, followed by diffuse small cleaved cell [15%] type; follicle small cleaved cell, diffuse mixed small and large cell as well as lymphoblastic types were equally frequent [12.5% each]. Other histological types were less common. The pattern of infiltration of the bone marrow was diffuse in 76.7% of intermediate, 70% of low and 100% of high grade NHLs. It was focal random [non-paratrabecular] in 15% of low grade and 15.4% of intermediate grade NHLs. Focal paratrabecular pattern was evident in 15% of low grade and 7.7% of intermediate grade NHLs

ABSTRACT

Splenic and bone marrow aspirations were done simultaneously in visceral leishmaniasis [VL] patients to compare the relative merits and demerits of each procedure. Splenic aspiration was found more sensitive than bone marrow aspiration. Out of 105 patients, Leishman Donovan [LD] bodies were found in 92.4% and 62.8% of the splenic and bone marrow aspirates respectively. Both the procedures were hazardless. Splenic aspiration was found more acceptable to the patients as less painful and to the clinicians as easy to perform

ABSTRACT

377 patients with single thyroid nodule who clinically were candidates for surgery, were selected from the patients that referred to the clinics of endocrinology at Namazee Hospital, Shiraz Medical School. Fine needle aspiration [FNA] was carried out without performing thyroid scan and the results were compared with histology obtained by surgery to establish its accuracy in our center, which is an area of endemic goiter. 72% were benign confirmed by surgery, 17% malignant [of which two cases were colloid goiter] and 11% [42 cases] were suspicious: of these 42 suspicious cases, 28.5% were follicular carcinoma and the rest were benign. In this study sensitivity and specificity of FNA were 91% and 97%, respectively. In conclusion, although our area is an endemic goiter area, the accuracy of FNA is comparable to iodine sufficient areas

ABSTRACT

In Sabah Hospital, Kuwait, during 1993, 155 children with aspirated F.B. were treated. The majority of F.B. were organic 84%. In pre-endoscopy radiological diagnosis, fluoroscopy was the most important either alone or combined with plain chest X-ray, laryngotracheal F.Bs. through relatively uncommon showed 80% normal X-ray findings. But in the most common site, main Bronchus negative X-ray was only 38% improved by use of fluoroscopy to 12.5%. The positive X-ray findings were obstructive emphysema, inspiratory shift of the mediastinal shadow, pneumonia and atelectasis, with more than one finding in some cases. Main duration of aspiration was longest in bronchial F.Bs

ABSTRACT

Prospective randomized study compares treatment of dorsal wrist ganglia by aspiration only and aspiration plus injection of steroid. 82 consecutive patients with wrist ganglia were randomized into two groups. The first group, ganglia were aspirated and multi-punctured, the second group, ganglia were aspirated, multiply punctured and then injected with kenacort 40 mg/ml. The request for surgery was not refused, if asked for
