ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Liposarcomas are among the most common soft tissue sarcomas in adulthood. AIM: The purpose of the study is to perform a histopathologic typing according to World Health Organization (WHO) classification of cases diagnosed with liposarcoma and to examine the difference of p53 and MDM2 expressions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The haematoxylin-eosin stained sections of 48 subjects enrolled in the study have been evaluated on the basis of the WHO classification for liposarcoma and sections stained using p53 and MDM2. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Chi-Square test was applied. RESULTS: 20 subjects were diagnosed with well-differentiated liposarcoma (WLS), 16 myxoid liposarcoma (ML), 7 pleomorphic liposarcoma (PL), and 5 de-differentiated liposarcoma (DLS). The number of cases stained positive with MDM2 and p53 were positive correlated in all subjects (P = 0.02). p53 and MDM2 positivity increased in high grade tumors (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: p53 and MDM2 immuno-reactivity was found to be potentially useful in liposarcoma diagnosis but a definitive implication would be rather unhealthy due to the small number of cases in our study.

ABSTRACT

Los liposarcomas surgen del tejido adiposo frofundo. Presentamos el caso de un varón de 69 años con liposarcoma de localización cervicodorsal con numerosas recidivas. Enfatizamos la importancia de una correcta clasificación histológica

ABSTRACT

Twelve cases of dedifferentiated liposarcoma with neural like or meningeal-like whorling pattern, metaplastic bone formation, fibrosarcoma or hemangiopericytoma like area were studied. Most of the tumors were huge masses [ranging from 2.5-60 cm]. Histologically, the tumors revealed in addition to areas of well differentiated liposarcoma discrete nodules consisting of hypercellular and spindle to ovoid cellular proliferation arranged in tight concentric whorls resembling neural tumors of meningiomas. Metaplastic ossification was present in eight of 12 tumors and consisted of variable amounts of osteoblast rimmed bone trabeculae situated at the periphery of the whorled areas or intimately mixed with the whorled cellular component. Immunohistochemical studies were inconclusive in determining the nature of the dedifferentiated whorled element and others

ABSTRACT

A large retroperitoneal tumor [10kg] was excised from a 50 year old lady who presented to the Medical Outpatients' Department with abdominal enlargement. Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare soft-tissue sarcoma which commonly presents as a painless abdominal mass. Diagnosis is usually by computerised tomography and histological examination. It has a poor prognosis and a high recurrence rate. Wide local surgical excision is the optimal therapy
