ABSTRACT

The aquatic grass Zizania latifolia grows symbiotically with the fungus Ustilago esculenta producing swollen structures called Jiaobai, widely cultivated in China. A new disease of Z. latifolia was found in Zhejiang Province, China. Initial lesions appeared on the leaf sheaths or sometimes on the leaves near the leaf sheaths. The lesions extended along the axis of the leaf shoots and formed long brown to dark brown streaks from the leaf sheath to the leaf, causing sheath rot and death of entire leaves on young plants. The pathogen was isolated and identified as the bacterium Pantoea ananatis, based on 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing, multilocus sequence analysis (atpD (β-subunit of ATP synthase F1), gyrB (DNA gyrase subunit B), infB (translation initiation factor 2), and rpoB (β‍-subunit of RNA polymerase) genes), and pathogenicity tests. Ultrastructural observations using scanning electron microscopy revealed that the bacterial cells colonized the vascular tissues in leaf sheaths, forming biofilms on the inner surface of vessel walls, and extended between vessel elements via the perforated plates. To achieve efficient detection and diagnosis of P. ananatis, species-specific primer pairs were designed and validated by testing closely related and unrelated species and diseased tissues of Z. latifolia. This is the first report of bacterial sheath rot disease of Z. latifolia caused by P. ananatis in China.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Milk whey, a byproduct of the dairy industry has a negative environmental impact, can be used as a raw material for added-value compounds such as galactooligosaccharides (GOS) synthesis by bgalactosidases. RESULTS: B-gal42 from Pantoea anthophila strain isolated from tejuino belonging to the glycosyl hydrolase family GH42, was overexpressed in Escherichia coli and used for GOS synthesis from lactose or milk whey. Crude cell-free enzyme extracts exhibited high stability; they were employed for GOS synthesis reactions. In reactions with 400 g/L lactose, the maximum GOS yield was 40% (w/w) measured by HPAEC-PAD, corresponding to 86% of conversion. This enzyme had a strong predilection to form GOS with b(1 ? 6) and b (1 ? 3) galactosyl linkages. Comparing GOS synthesis between milk whey and pure lactose, both of them at 300 g/L, these two substrates gave rise to a yield of 38% (60% of lactose conversion) with the same product profile determined by HPAEC-PAD. CONCLUSIONS: B-gal42 can be used on whey (a cheap lactose source) to produce added value products such as galactooligosaccharides.

ABSTRACT

A Mancha Branca do Milho (MBM) é uma doença foliar que tem causado perdas apreciáveis, tanto qualitativas como quantitativas para a produção de milho. Seu agente etiológico, a Pantoea ananatis, é uma bactéria epifítica, Gram-negativa formadora de colônia amarela, capaz de formar gelo, mesmo em ambiente tropical (ice nucleation activity - INA). Este estudo teve por objetivo caracterizar isolados de P. ananatis quanto à atividade INA e avaliar o efeito da densidade bacteriana na expressão do fenótipo INA e no processo de desenvolvimento da doença. O agente patogênico foi isolado de lesões iniciais da doença, as anasarcas, e avaliado quanto à expressão do fenótipo INA em diferentes concentrações bacterianas. O mesmo foi feito com isolados epifíticos obtidos da superfície foliar de plantas de milho sadias. Dos 24 isolados bacterianos estudados, apenas 13 apresentaram o fenótipo INA+. A expressão deste fenótipo foi dependente da densidade celular. Isolados INA+ e INA­ foram inoculados em folhas destacadas e em plantas da cultivar HS200 a campo, em diferentes concentrações do inóculo. Nenhum isolado INA­ reproduziu sintomas em laboratório. Dos cinco isolados INA+ somente um deles reproduziu sintomas em laboratório. Em campo o isolado INA+ foi capaz de promover lesões em todas as concentrações avaliadas. Conclui-se que a atividade de nucleação de gelo pela bactéria P. ananatis é dependente da linhagem e da densidade bacteriana e este fenômeno pode estar envolvido no desenvolvimento dos sintomas da MBM.(AU)


Maize White Spot Disease is a leaf disease that has caused considerable losses, both qualitative and quantitative for corn production. Its etiologic agent, Pantoea ananatis, is an epiphytic, Gram-negative, yellow colony-forming bacterium, capable of forming ice, even in tropical environments at temperatures where this normally does not occur (Ice Nucleation Activity - INA). This study aimed at characterizing P. ananatis isolates in terms of INA activity and evaluating the effect of bacterial density on the expression of the INA phenotype and on the disease development process. The pathogen was isolated from the initial lesions of the disease, the anasarcas, and were evaluated for the expression of the INA phenotype in different bacterial concentrations. The same procedure was performed on epiphytic isolates obtained from the leaf surface of healthy maize plants. From the 24 bacterial isolates studied, only 13 presented the INA+ phenotype. The expression of this phenotype is dependent on cell density. INA+ and INA­ isolates were inoculated on detached leaves and on plants of cultivar HS200 in the field, in different concentrations of the inoculum. No INA­ isolates reproduced symptoms in the laboratory. From the five INA+ isolates, only one of them reproduced symptoms in the laboratory. In the field, the INA+ isolate was able to promote lesions in all concentrations evaluated. It can be concluded that the ice nucleation activity by P. ananatis is dependent on the strain and bacterial density and this phenomenon may be involved in the development of Maize White Spot Disease symptoms.(AU)


La mancha blanca del maíz es una enfermedad de la hoja que ha causado pérdidas considerables, tanto cualitativas como cuantitativas para la producción de maíz. Su agente etiológico, Pantoea ananatis, es una bacteria epífita, Gram-negativa, formadora de colonias amarillas, capaz de causar hielo, incluso en ambientes tropicales a temperaturas donde esto normalmente no ocurre (actividad de nucleación de hielo - INA). Este estudio tuvo como objetivo caracterizar los aislados de P. ananatis en términos de actividad de INA y evaluar el efecto de la densidad bacteriana en la expresión del fenotipo de INA y en el proceso de desarrollo de la enfermedad. El patógeno se aisló de las lesiones iniciales de la enfermedad, las anasarcas, y se evaluó la expresión del fenotipo INA en diferentes concentraciones bacterianas. Lo mismo se hizo con aislamientos epifitos obtenidos de la superficie de la hoja de plantas de maíz sanas. De los 24 aislados bacterianos estudiados, solo 13 presentaron el fenotipo INA+. La expresión de este fenotipo depende de la densidad celular. Se inocularon aislamientos INA+ e INA- en hojas desprendidas y en plantas del cultivar HS200 en el campo, en diferentes concentraciones del inóculo. Ninguno aislado INA- reprodujo síntomas en el laboratorio. De los cinco aislamientos de INA+, solo uno de ellos reprodujo síntomas en el laboratorio. En el campo, el aislado INA+ pudo promover lesiones en todas las concentraciones evaluadas. Se concluye que la nucleación de hielo por P. ananatis depende de la cepa y la densidad bacteriana, y este fenómeno puede estar involucrado en el desarrollo de los síntomas de la enfermedad de la mancha blanca del maíz.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to verify the presence of members from the Enterobacteriaceae family and determine antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of the isolates in canaries bred in northeastern Brazil; in addition, the presence of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) and avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) was also verified in these birds. Samples were collected during an exhibition organized by the Brazilian Ornithological Federation in July 2015 in Fortaleza, Brazil. A total of 88 fecal samples were collected and submitted to pre-enrichment step using buffered peptone water, followed by enrichment with the following broths: brain-heart infusion, Rappaport-Vassiliadis, and Selenite-Cystine. Subsequently, aliquots were streaked on MacConkey, brilliant green and salmonella-shigella agar plates. Colonies were selected according to morphological characteristics and submitted to biochemical identification and antimicrobial susceptibility tests with disk-diffusion technique. E. coli strains were evaluated for the presence of eight DEC genes and five APEC genes through conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) screening. The most frequent species observed were Pantoea agglomerans (25%), Serratia liquefaciens (12.5%), and Enterobacter aerogenes (9.1%). A single rough strain of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica was identified in one sample (1.1%). High resistance rates to amoxicillin (78.7%) and ampicillin (75.4%) were identified. Polymyxin B (9.8%), gentamycin (6.6%), and enrofloxacin (6.6%) were the most efficient antibiotics. The total number of multidrug-resistant strains (isolates resistant to more than three antimicrobial classes) was 23 (37.7%). Four E. coli strains were tested for the virulence genes, and two were positive for APEC virulence genes: one strain was positive for iutA and the other for hlyF. In conclusion, canaries in northeastern Brazil participating in exhibitions may present Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli and other enterobacteria in the intestinal microbiota with antimicrobial resistance. These results indicate that, although the E. coli strains recovered from canaries in this study have some virulence genes, they still do not fulfill all the requirements to be considered APEC.(AU)


O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a presença de enterobactérias e determinar o perfil de sensibilidade aos antimicrobianos dos isolados oriundos de canários belgas criados em cativeiro do Nordeste do Brasil, adicionalmente verificou-se a presença de Escherichia coli diarreiogênicas (DEC) e E. coli patogênica aviária (APEC) nesses animais. A colheita das amostras ocorreu durante uma exposição de canários belgas organizada pela Federação Ornitológica do Brasil (FOB), em julho de 2015, na cidade de Fortaleza, Ceará, Brasil. Um total de 88 amostras de fezes foram coletadas e submetidas a pré-enriquecimento utilizando água peptonada, caldo de enriquecimento Brain Heart Infusion, Rappaport-Vassiliadis e Selenito-Cistina. Fez-se triagem em placas de ágar MacConkey, Verde Brilhante e ágar Salmonella Shigella. As colônias foram selecionadas e submetidas à identificação bioquímica e susceptibilidade antimicrobiana. Estirpes de Escherichia coli foram avaliadas quanto a presença de 8 genes de virulência de DEC e cinco de APEC por reação em cadeia da polimerase convencional (PCR). As enterobactérias encontradas com maior frequência foram Pantoea agglomerans (25%), Serratia liquefaciens (12,5%) e Enterobacter aerogenes (9,1%). Uma única estirpe de Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica (rugosa) esteve presente em um dos isolados (1,1%). Altos percentuais de resistência foram encontrados para dois antibióticos: amoxicilina (78,7%) e ampicilina (75,4%). Polimixina B (9,8%), gentamicina (6,8%) e enrofloxacina (6,5%) foram os antibióticos com melhor eficiência. O total de estirpes multirresistentes (a mais de três classes de antimicrobianos) foi de 23 (37,7%). Das quatro estirpes de E. coli isoladas, duas foram positivas para os genes de APEC, sendo uma estipe para o gene iss e outra para os genes iutA e hlyF. Portanto, canários belgas criados em cativeiro no Brasil que participam de exposições podem apresentar Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli e outras enterobactérias em sua microbiota intestinal com resistência antimicrobiana. Estes resultados indicam que as estirpes de E. coli isoladas de canário belga no presente estudo apresentam alguns, mas não todos, genes de virulência para serem caracterizadas como E. coli patogênica para aves (APEC).(AU)

La amplia distribución de los bacilos gram negativos no fermentadores en medios ambientales como el agua y especies vegetales cobra importancia al ser reconocidos como agentes causales de enfermedades en pacientes inmunocomprometidos, de allí la relevancia del porque debemos conocer la prevalencia y perfil de susceptibilidad de estos microorganismos en ambientes no hospitalarios. Materiales y Métodos: Estudio transversal, realizado en muestras hídricas de fuentes naturales y artificiales de almacenamiento para el consumo humano en la ciudad de Bogotá y municipios aledaños. La identificación se realizó a través de pruebas IMVIC y el perfil de resistencia a través del método de kirby bauer o E-TEST®. Resultados: Se obtuvieron 42 muestras, 7 (16,6%) con aislamientos de interés: 3 (60%) Pseudomonas spp, 2 (20%) Acinetobacter spp, 1 (10%) Sphingomonas paucimobilis y 1 (10%) Pantoea spp. El 70% presento resistencia a la ceftriaxona, el 30% a cefoxitina, 20% a gentamicina, 10% a ciprofloxacina y 10% a piperacilina-tazobactam. No se presentó resistencia a imipenem. Conclusión: 5 de 7 aislamientos revelaron un BGNNF de importancia en infección en humanos, siendo importante la resistencia encontrada a la ceftriaxona.


The wide distribution of non-fermenting gram negative bacilli in environmental media such as water and plants becomes important as they are recognized a cause of diseases in immunocompromised patients, that’s the reason why we should to know the prevalence and the susceptibility profile of these microorganisms in non-hospital environments. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study done with samples of natural and artificial water storage for human consumption in the city of Bogotá and surrounding municipalities. The identification was made through IMVIC tests and the resistance profile through the kirby bauer or E-TEST® method. Results: 42 samples were obtained, 7 (16.6%) with isolates of interest: 3 (60%) Pseudomonas spp, 2 (20%) Acinetobacter spp, 1 (10%) Sphingomonas paucimobilis and 1 (10%) Pantoea spp. The 70% had resistance to ceftriaxone, 30% to cefoxitin, 20% to gentamicin, 10% to ciprofloxacin and 10% to piperacillin-tazobactam. No resistance to imipenem was shown. Conclusion: 5 of 7 isolates revealed a BGNNF of importance in infection in humans, with an important resistance to ceftriaxone.

ABSTRACT

Maize plants can establish beneficial associations with plant growth-promoting bacteria. However, few studies have been conducted on the characterization and inoculation of these bacteria in the Amazon region. This study aimed to characterize endophytic bacteria isolated from maize in the Amazon region and to assess their capacity to promote plant growth. Fifty-five bacterial isolates were obtained from maize grown in two types of ecosystems, i.e., a cerrado (savanna) and a forest area. The isolates were characterized by the presence of the nifH gene, their ability to synthesize indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and solubilize calcium phosphate (CaHPO4), and 16S rRNA partial gene sequencing. Twenty-four bacteria contained the nifH gene, of which seven were isolated from maize plants cultivated in a cerrado area and seventeen from a forest area. Fourteen samples showed the capacity to synthesize IAA and only four solubilized calcium phosphate. The following genera were found among these isolates: Pseudomonas; Acinetobacter; Enterobacter; Pantoea; Burkholderia and Bacillus. In addition, eight isolates with plant growth-promoting capacity were selected for a glasshouse experiment involving the inoculation of two maize genotypes (a hybrid and a variety) grown in pots containing soil. Inoculation promoted the development of the maize plants but no significant interaction between maize cultivar and bacterial inoculation was found. A high diversity of endophytic bacteria is present in the Amazon region and these bacteria have potential to promote the development of maize plants.


Plantas de milho podem estabelecer associações benéficas com bactérias promotoras do crescimento vegetal. No entanto, poucos estudos de caracterização e inoculação com essas bactérias foram realizados na região Amazônica. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar bactérias endofíticas isoladas de milho na região Amazônica e avaliar sua capacidade de promover o crescimento. Cinquenta e cinco isolados bacterianos foram obtidos de plantas de milho cultivadas em diferentes tipos de ecossistemas, cerrado (savana) e área de floresta. Estes foram caracterizados pela presença do gene nifH, capacidade de sintetizar ácido indol-3-acético (AIA), solubilizar fosfato de cálcio (CaHPO4) e sequenciamento parcial do gene 16S rRNA. Vinte e quatro bactérias apresentaram o gene nifH. Destas, sete são oriundas de plantas cultivadas em uma área de cerrado e 17 em área de floresta. Quatorze bactérias demonstraram a capacidade de solubilizar AIA e quatro de solubilizar fosfato de cálcio. Entre estas bactérias, foram encontrados os seguintes gêneros: Pseudomonas; Acinetobacter; Enterobacter; Pantoea; Burkholderia e Bacillus. Oito isolados com capacidade de promoção do crescimento vegetal foram selecionados para experimento em casa de vegetação com a inoculação em dois diferentes genótipos de milho (um híbrido e uma variedade) em vasos com solo. Quanto à promoção de crescimento vegetal, a inoculação promoveu o desenvolvimento de plantas de milho, mas não foi encontrada interação significativa entre a cultivar de milho e a inoculação bacteriana. Na região Amazônica há uma diversidade de bactérias endofíticas e estas possuem potencial para promover o desenvolvimento de plantas de milho.

ABSTRACT

Contamination with sanitary microorganisms from Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Staphylococcaceae, Micrococcaceae and Bacillaceae families in flower bee pollen from Bulgaria after one-year vacuum-packed cold storage has been found. Dried flower bee pollens intended for human consumption were with high incidence rate of contamination with Pantoea sp. (P. agglomerans and P. agglomerans bgp6) (100%), Citrobacter freundii (47%), Proteus mirabilis (31.6%), Serratia odorifera (15.8%) and Proteus vulgaris (5.3%). Bee pollens were also positive for the culture of microorganisms from Staphylococcaceae, Micrococcaceae and Bacillaceae families: Staphylococcus hominis subsp hominis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Arthrobacter globiformis, Bacillus pumilis, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. It was concluded that, if consumed directly, the vacuum-packed cold stored dried bee pollen, harvested according hygienic requirements from bee hives in industrial pollution-free areas without intensive crop production, is not problem for healthy human.

ABSTRACT

To improve the yield of sucrose isomerase from Pantoea dispersa UQ68J, we studied the effect of different signal peptides and fermentation conditions on sucrose isomerase expression in Escherichia coli. The gene of sucrose isomerase was optimized and expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3) with native signal peptide which was named as ORI strain. The total and extracellular enzyme activity was 85 and 65 U/mL in the flask, respectively. The mature protein, which started from the 22th amino acid, was connected with the PelB and OmpA signal peptide to construct P22 and O22 strain, respectively. The total activity of P22 reached 138 U/mL, which was 1.6 times of ORI strain. The total activity of O22 strain was similar to that of ORI strain. Induced by 3.0 g/L lactose, the total activity of P22 strain increased to 168 U/mL. In 3 L fermentor, the effects of glycine concentration and induction time were studied. Induction when the DCW reached 18 g/L (OD₆₀₀=30), with 0.5% glycine, the extracellular enzyme activity reached 1 981 U/mL, and the total enzyme activity reached 2 640 U/mL, which is the highest activity of sucrose isomerase that was expressed in recombinant E. coli.

ABSTRACT

The increasing use of organophosphorus pesticides in agricultural practices over the past few years has generated a number of environmental problems; these compounds tend to bioaccumulate through food chains showing high levels of toxicity triggering potential health risk for species that are exposed to these substances. In this research were used the Soxhlet and solid phase micro extraction in headspace (HS-SPME) methods for the extraction of organophosphorus pesticides in agricultural cattle soils and bovine milk, respectively. The presence of demeton-S-methylsulfon was determined at concentrations between 272.9 and 1793.3 ppm in cropland and 12.9 ppm in cow milk. Native soil bacteria were isolated showing degrading capacity of these pesticides, Bacillus sp and Pantoea agglomerans which gave results of degradation of 73.5% and 68.6 %, respectively, in the concentration of chlorpyrifos, showing that these microorganisms are a possible solution for improving soils contaminated by this class of pesticides.


El incremento en el uso de pesticidas organofosforados en las prácticas agrícolas a través de los últimos años, ha generado una serie de problemas ambientales. Estos compuestos tienden a bioacumularse a través de las cadenas tróficas presentando altos niveles de toxicidad desencadenando potenciales riesgos para la salud de las especies que son expuestas a este tipo de sustancias. En esta investigación se usaron los métodos de extracción soxhlet y micro extracción en fase sólida en espacio de cabeza (HS-SPME) para la extracción de pesticidas organofosforados en suelos de cultivo y leche de ganado bovino, respectivamente. Se determinó la presencia de demetón-S-metilsulfón en concentraciones entre 272.9 y 1793.3 ppm en los suelos de cultivo y 12.9 ppm en leche de vaca. Se aislaron bacterias nativas de suelo con capacidad degradadora de estos pesticidas, Bacillus sp y Pantoea agglomerans, obteniéndose resultados de degradación del compuesto organofosforado, clorpirifos de 73.5% y 68.67%, respectivamente, evidenciando que estos microorganismos son una posible solución para el mejoramiento de suelos contaminados por esta clase de pesticidas.

Twenty four bacterial strains from four different regions of mud volcano and lime cave were isolated to estimate their diversity, plant growth promoting and biocontrol activities to use them as inoculant strains in the fields. An excellent antagonistic effect against four plant pathogens and plant growth promoting properties such as IAA production, HCN production, phosphate solubilization, siderophore production, starch hydrolysis and hydrolytic enzymes syntheses were identified in OM5 (Pantoea agglomerans) and EM9 (Exiguobacterium sp.) of 24 studied isolates. Seeds (Chili and tomato) inoculation with plant growth promoting strains resulted in increased percentage of seedling emergence, root length and plant weight. Results indicated that co-inoculation gave a more pronounced effects on seedling emergence, secondary root numbers, primary root length and stem length, while inoculation by alone isolate showed a lower effect. Our results suggest that the mixed inocula of OM5 and EM9 strains as biofertilizers could significantly increase the production of food crops in Andaman archipelago by means of sustainable and organic agricultural system.

ABSTRACT

For microbial production of lycopene, the lycopene synthetic genes from Pantoea agglomerans were integrated into Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain BY4742, to obtain strain ZD-L-000 for production of 0.17 mg · L(-1) lycopene. Improving supplies of isoprenoid precursors was then investigated for increasing lycopene production. Four key genes were chosen to be overexpressed, inclu- ding truncated 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase gene (tHMG1), which is the major rate-limiting enzyme in the mevalonate (MVA) pathway, a mutated global regulatory factor gene (upc2.1), a fusion gene of FPP synthase (ERG20) and endogenous GGPP synthase (BTS1), which is a key enzyme in the diterpenoid synthetic pathway, and GGPP synthase gene (SaGGPS) from Sulfolobus acidocaldarius. Over-expression of upc2.1 could not improve lycopene production, while over-expression of tHMGI , BTS1-ERG20 and SaGGPS genes led to 2-, 16. 9- and20. 5-fold increase of lycopene production, respectively. In addition, three effective genes, tHMG1, BTS1-ERG20 and SaGGPS, were integrated into rDNA sites of ZD-L-000, resulting in strain ZD-L-201 for production of 13.23 mg · L(-1) lycopene, which was 77-fold higher than that of the parent strain. Finally, two-phase extractive fermentation was performed. The titer of lycopene increased 10-fold to 135.21 mg · L(-1). The engineered yeast strains obtained in this work provided the basis for fermentative production of lycopene.

ABSTRACT

Uterine sterilization is important for improving fertility in cattle. This study compared bacterial flora in the uterus between healthy and repeat breeder cows (RBCs). The uterine flushing of six heifers, 13 healthy HanWoo cows and eight RBCs (HanWoo) were sampled, and 15 frozen semen samples were selected. Overall, 35 bacteria were identified from in HanWoo uterine flushing and semen. The bacterial genera identified from HanWoo uterine flushing were Alloiococcus, Bacillus, Enterobacter, Enterococcus, Erysipelothrix, Gardnerella, Granulicatella, Kocuria, Pantoea, Pasteurella, Rothia, Serratia, Sphingomonas, Staphylococcus, Stenotrophomonas and Streptococcus. The bacterial genera identified from HanWoo semen were Bacillus, Escherichia, Kocuria, Oligella, Pseudomonas, Serratia, Sphingomonas, Staphylococcus, Stenotrophomonas and Streptococcus. The prevalence and presence of the identified bacteria between healthy cows and RBCs differed significantly. Further studies are needed to determine the role of these bacteria in the uterus of HanWoo cattle with reproductive disorder.

ABSTRACT

Neonatal septicemia is the most important cause of neonatal mortality. A wide variety of bacteria both aerobic and anaerobic can cause neonatal sepsis. Genus Pantoea is a member of Enterobacteriaceae family that inhabits plants, soil and water and rarely causes human infections, however, Pantoea dispersa has not been reported as a causative organism for neonatal sepsis. We hereby report two neonates with early onset sepsis caused by Pantoea dispersa. Early detection and appropriate antibiotic therapy can improve overall outcome of this rare infection in neonates.

La sepsis tardía es especialmente frecuente en los recién nacidos pretérmino, y los bacilos gramnegativos son responsables de los casos más graves con una elevada mortalidad asociada. Pantoea agglomerans es un bacilo gramnegativo que pocas veces se ha descrito como patógeno en el ser humano, menos aún en el recién nacido. Se presenta el caso clínico de un recién nacido pretérmino que sufrió una sepsis fulminante por Pantoea agglomerans en una unidad de cuidados intensivos neonatales. Hasta la fecha no se ha descrito ningún caso de sepsis por P. agglomerans en esta población en España.


Late-onset sepsis is very frequent among preterm infants and cases due to Gram negative pathogens have elevated morbidity and mortality. Pantoea agglomerans is a Gram negative organism which has been rarely reported causing disease in humans. We present a case of P. agglomerans late-onset fulminant sepsis in a preterm newborn at a neonatal intensive care unit. Up to date none P. agglomerans sepsis has been reported among this population in our country.

ABSTRACT

Pantoe agglomerans (P. agglomerans) is an unusual cause for sepsis in immunocompetent individuals, especially in the absence of characteristic risk factors. We report one such case occurring in a farmer, manifesting with severe illness. The severe nature of illness and the apparently spontaneous origin of septicemia underline the pathogenic potential of this organism. When coupled with the ubiquity of the organism, there is a definite possibility that this disease may become increasingly frequent in the near future, especially in agronomic countries like India. Further studies on the epidemiology and natural history of this disease are required.

ABSTRACT

Pantoea infections are rare in humans and an unusual cause for sepsis in immunocompetent patient. It is a gram-nagative bacillus of the family Enterobacteriaceae. Infections are usually associated with plant thorn injury or outbreak traced to comtaminated parenteral nutrition. We experienced a case of pantoea species cholecystitis and cholangitis with bacteremia. The patient was administrated intravenous antibiotics, and then patient was improved.

ABSTRACT

A 52-year-old man undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis presented with two consecutive episodes of peritonitis caused by unusual organisms, namely, Brevibacterium and Pantoea agglomerans. The patient was successfully treated with a 2-week course of cefazolin and ceftazidime for the Brevibacterium-associated peritonitis, and a 3-week course of gentamicin for the P. agglomerans-associated peritonitis. Although these environmental organisms are rarely responsible for human infection, the number of reported cases of human infection by these unusual organisms has increased. This report emphasizes the potential for infection by environmental organisms in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis.

ABSTRACT

A circular cryptic plasmid named pPAGA (2,734 bp) was isolated from Pantoea agglomerans strain EGE6 (an endophytic bacterial isolate from eucalyptus). Sequence analysis revealed that the plasmid has a G+C content of 51 percent and contains four potential ORFs, 238(A), 250(B), 131(C), and 129(D) amino acids in length without homology to known proteins. The shuttle vector pLGM1 was constructed by combining the pPAGA plasmid with pGFPmut3.0 (which harbors a gene encoding green fluorescent protein, GFP), and the resulting construct was used to over-express GFP in E. coli and P. agglomerans cells. GFP production was used to monitor the colonization of strain EGE6gfp in various plant tissues by fluorescence microscopy. Analysis of EGE6gfp colonization showed that 14 days after inoculation, the strain occupied the inner tissue of Eucalyptus grandis roots, preferentially colonizing the xylem vessels of the host plants.

ABSTRACT

Endophytic bacteria from three arboreal species native to the Amazon (Carapa guianenses, Ceiba pentandra, and Swietenia macrophylla), were isolated and identified, through partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA encoding gene. From these, 16 isolates were obtained, although, when compared to sequences deposited in GenBank, only seven had produced identifiable fragments. Bacillus, Pantoea and two non-culturable samples were identified. Results obtained through sequence analysis revealed low genetic diversity across the isolates, even when analyzing different species and plant structures. This is the first report concerning the isolation and identification of endophytic bacteria in these plant species.
