ABSTRACT

Abstract Large quantities of kitchen waste are produced in modern society and its disposal poses serious environmental and social problems. The aim of this study was to isolate degradative strains from kitchen waste and to develop a novel and effective microbial agent. One hundred and four strains were isolated from kitchen waste and the 84 dominant strains were used to inoculate protein-, starch-, fat- and cellulose-containing media for detecting their degradability. Twelve dominant strains of various species with high degradability (eight bacteria, one actinomycetes and three fungi) were selected to develop a compound microbial agent "YH" and five strains of these species including H7 (Brevibacterium epidermidis), A3 (Paenibacillus polymyxa), E3 (Aspergillus japonicus), F9 (Aspergillus versicolor) and A5 (Penicillium digitatum), were new for kitchen waste degradation. YH was compared with three commercial microbial agents-"Tiangeng" (TG), "Yilezai" (YLZ) and Effective Microorganisms (EM), by their effects on reduction, maturity and deodorization. The results showed that YH exerted the greatest efficacy on mass loss which decreased about 65.87% after 14 days. The agent inhibited NH3 and H2S emissions significantly during composting process. The concentration of NH3 decreased from 7.1 to 3.2 ppm and that of H2S reduced from 0.7 to 0.2 ppm. Moreover, E4/E6 (Extinction value460nm/Extinction value665nm) of YH decreased from 2.51 to 1.31, which meant YH had an obvious maturity effect. These results highlighted the potential application of YH in composting kitchen waste.

ABSTRACT

Estudos sobre a vitamina K têm evidenciado seu papel na manutenção da saúde óssea e vascular. A atuação desta vitamina em tecidos extra-hepáticos não é considerada na recomendação dietética da DRI de 2001, sendo reconhecidas necessidades maiores para função óssea em pessoas acima dos 60 anos e em indivíduos que fazem uso de medicamentos antivitamina K. Visando colaborar com pesquisas futuras, onde o conhecimento do teor de vitamina K1 é relevante, além de contribuir com dados para Tabela Brasileira de Composição de Alimentos - TBCA-USP, o presente trabalho foi conduzido para determinação do teor de filoquinona (vitamina K1) de hortaliças consumidas na cidade de São Paulo. As hortaliças analisadas foram escolhidas após a conclusão de um inquérito alimentar realizado, com adultos e idosos, num projeto de pesquisa desenvolvido junto ao Departamento de Alimentos e Nutrição Experimental da FCF/USP visando a análise da ingestão diária de vitamina K. Desta forma, foram analisadas as hortaliças mais consumidas por esses grupos, submetidas ou não ao processo de cocção. Estas amostras foram adquiridas diretamente na CEAGESP - Companhia de Entrepostos e Armazéns Gerais de São Paulo. As metodologias empregadas na determinação da filoquinona (vitamina K1) foram extração e purificação pelo método líquido-líquido utilizando solventes orgânicos e quantificação através da Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Eficiência (CLAE). Os resultados mostraram que as amostras de hortaliças de colorações verdes mais escuras apresentaram os maiores teores da vitamina como: salsa 491,05 µg/100g; espinafre 375,01 µg/100g, quando comparados com as amostras de colorações verdes mais claras as quais como é o caso da alface americana 113,42 µg/100g e a couve-flor 32,55 µg/100g. A maioria das hortaliças analisadas apresentaram variações entre as diferentes épocas do ano e quando comparadas com dados da literatura


Studies on vitamin K have shown its role in maintaining bone and vascular health. The role of this vitamin in extrahepatic tissues is not considered in the dietary recommendation of DRI 2001. Increased need for vitamin K intake is recognized for the bone function in people over age 60 and individuals who use anti-vitamin K drugs. Aiming at supporting future research, where knowledge of vitamin K1 is relevant, and contribute data to the Brazilian Table of Food Composition - TBCA-USP, this study was conducted to determine the level of phylloquinone (vitamin K1) of vegetables consumed in the city of São Paulo. The vegetables studied were chosen after completion of a nutrition survey carried out with adults and elderly people, a research project developed by the Department of Food and Experimental Nutrition FCF / USP aimed at analyzing the daily intake of vitamin K. Therefore, we analyzed the most consumed vegetables by these groups submitted or not to the cooking process. These samples were acquired directly at CEAGESP - General Warehouses Company of São Paulo. The methodologies employed in the determination of phylloquinone (vitamin K1) were extraction and purification method using liquid-liquid organic solvents followed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that the samples of darker green vegetables showed the highest levels of vitamin such as parsley (491.05 µg/100g) and spinach (375.01 µg/100g), when compared with samples of lighter coloration (e.g. 113.42 µg/100g lettuce, and 32.55 µg/100g cauliflower). Most vegetables analyzed showed variation in results when compared to the different seasons and the literature data

ABSTRACT

O cálcio (Ca) dietético é fundamental para a saúde óssea. Tanto o teor como a biodisponibilidade do elemento nos alimentos devem ser considerados. Este artigo objetiva sumarizar os fatores envolvidos na absorção e destacar os alimentos com melhor disponibilidade do Ca. Este é absorvido principalmente no jejuno e o pH baixo parece favorecer sua absorção, que é maior no crescimento, na gestação/lactação e na carência de Ca ou fósforo (P), e menor no envelhecimento. As maiores fontes, e com melhor absorção, são os laticínios bovinos. Outros alimentos apresentam concentrações elevadas de Ca, mas com biodisponibilidade variável: os ricos em ácidos oxálico e fítico apresentariam uma menor absorção, enquanto que os ricos em carboidratos teriam uma absorção maior. Por apresentarem uma biodisponibilidade do Ca mais próxima da do leite bovino, o leite de outros animais, o de soja enriquecido e alguns vegetais, em quantidades adequadas, poderiam ser usados como alternativas a este.


Dietary calcium (Ca) is fundamental to the bone's health. Both the purport and the element bioavailability in the food need to be considered. The purpose of this work was to summarize the factors involved in Ca absorption and point out the sources with higher bioavailability. Ca is mostly absorbed in the jejunum and low pH seems to favor its absorption, which is higher during growth, gestation/lactation and Ca and phosphorus (P) deficiency, and lower with aging. The richest and best-absorbed Ca source is cow's milk and its derivatives. Other foods show high Ca concentrations but variable bioavailability: foods rich in phytates and oxalates show a smaller absorption and carbohydrate-rich foods show higher absorption. Since Ca bioavailability in other animal's milk, soymilk and some vegetables is closer to that in cow's milk, adequate amounts of these foods could be used as an alternative.

ABSTRACT

Ipomea aquatica is a wetland plant, which floats in water bodies and is being used as a vegetable. This plant has ability to remove Cr(VI) from the contaminated water by transforming Cr (VI) to Cr (III). This adsorption of Cr(VI) basically takes place in roots of this plant. The contact time required to bring down Cr(VI) concentration below the permissible level (0.05 mg/1) is 30 to 40 days for this plant, and that varies with varying initial concentration. The lower level of contamination requires greater contact time than the higher one to bring down Cr(VI) below the permissible level. Recovery (94 +/- 1%) of chromium from the treated plant has been reported in this paper, and at the same time disposal problem also dose not arise. The study revealed that the plant Ipomea aquatica adsorbs Cr(VI) from the contaminated water very slowly compared to the other reported plants.

ABSTRACT

A crude extract containing some toxic furanoterpenoids was isolated from F. solani infected sweet potatoes. Chronic administration of the crude extract to male albino rats at a dosage of 1 mg/kg body weight/day for 21 days brought about a sharp increase in the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and a depression of glutathione levels in the lung and liver homogenates. The antioxidant defense system was affected as evident from a significant fall in the activities of the enzymes, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and glutathione-S-transferase. Such an alteration could be the reason for the lung and liver damage caused by these toxic furanoterpenoids.
