RESUMEN

To evaluate the efficacy, and safety of a new surgical operative technique in loop colostomy. A prospective case series study. Al-Zahrawi and As-Salam Teaching Hospitals in Mosul, from Jan. 1995 - Dec. 2001. One hundred forty four [144] patients, 120 males [83.3%], and 24 females [16.7%], with different colon pathologies had undergone this technique. Alpha loop defunctioning colostomy. This new operative technique proved to be efficient in defunctioning the distal colon completely, safely, and with minimal complications; only one patient developed colostomy prolapse, which was corrected by the usual ways. Alpha loop colostomy [ALC] is an easy and safe procedure as well as it is very good in defunctioning the distal colon, and we recommend doing it

RESUMEN

Although colonic cancer incidence in Mosul province is uncommon compared to other countries, but still we see more patients mainly of the young age group with the majority of victims presented acutely with advanced stage, to prove that we must continue to rely on clinical findings for detecting this cancer, to keep colorectal cancer on the differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal symptoms and still careful history and proper physical examination are the usual methods for suspecting colorectal cancer

Methods: a retrospective study of patients with colorectal cancer treated in Mosul hospitals between January 1981 to December 2000 clinical data were carefully analyzed with special attention to clinical presention, management and the characteristics of the cancer

Results: 279 patients with colorectal tumors, included in this study, male patients 169[60.4%], female patients were 110[39.4%], male to female ratio were 1.5411, male patients predominating in all age groups, 193 [69.2%] of patients were below 60 [sixty] years of age, and more than 50% of cancer located distal to splenic flexure. The most common clinical presentation were, abdominal pains, intestinal obstruction, and palpable mass [40. 5%], [32.2%], [26. 5%] respectively. Sixty-eight percent of patients presented with Duke. C [50. 2%], while D [18. 3%], this means late presentation

Conclusion: one third of patient presented acutely as intestinal obstruction and more than two third, in advanced stage, there were definite delays in early detection of colorectal cancer and we must continue to rely on clinical findings at presentation and to keep colorectal cancer on the differential diagnosis of chronic gastrointestinal symptoms

RESUMEN

During one year [1988], 101 adult patients [28 males and 73] females from Mosul area, suffering from chronic non-specific urinary tract infection [Chr. UTI] for more than one -year in spite of repeated treatments were subjected to a variety of investigations to reveal the presence of concealed urinary tuberculosis. Sediments of 2.hours urine samples including two early mornings were examined directly by Zeihl-Neelsen stain and by culture, using Lowenstein-Jensen and/or Sula media. The same urine examinations were carried out on a control group consisting of 22 adult persons [9 males and 13 females] who were not suffering from chronic UTI. The study revealed positive results for AFB in 31 cases [30.69%] either by direct microscopy or culture None of the control group showed any positive results

RESUMEN

Among 474 patients with peptic ulcer symptoms who were referred for upper G.I.T endoscopy in Saddam General Hospital, 144 patients had normal [negative] endoscopic examination. Fifty seven patients, from the group were randomly allocated and compared with [51] control group [with no ulcer symptoms], underwent ultrasound examination for detection of gallbladder stones. Ten cases of the patients group and three of the control group [17.5% and 6% respectively] showed gallbladder stones. The difference is statistically significant, [p value

RESUMEN

A bacteriological study of 100 appendicectomies was reported. In 70 cases the appendices were acutely inflamed, 10 perforated and 20 were normal. Bacteria were isolated from 90 [90%] cases and no growth was obtained in the remaining 10 [10%]. The predominant microorganism isolated was-Escherichia coli [49 out of 120 isolates]. Other aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were also encountered. Antibacterial sensitivity test was performed for most of the isolates. Gentamicin was found to be the drug of choice [76.4%], followed by rifampicin [71.0%], clindamycin [63.7%], and polymyxine B [61.8%]

RESUMEN

A comparative study of dyspeptic patients with conventional single contrast barium meals [SCBM] and upper gastrointestinal tract [G.I.T] endoscopy for diagnosis of active duodenal ulceration[DU] is presented. 174 cases were included in this study and were divided into three groups according to their radiological findings. Group I: 56 [32.1%] patients had radiologically demonstrated ulcer niches of the duodenal cap and postbulbar area while only 22 [39.7%] patients proved to have active DU endoscopically and thus illustrating 34 [60.3%] patients with false positive ulcer niches. Group II:88 [50.6%] patients had non specific radiological signs of DU and only 21 [28.8%] proved to have active DU endoscopically. Group III: 30[17.3%] patients had X- ray negative dyspepsia and only 6 [20%] of them proved to have active DU endoscopically and this comprises the rate of false negative results for active DU in our SCBM. The endoscopic findings of each radiological group were studied and the reasons for false positive and negative results in our SCBM were discussed. Use of intravenous antispasmodic or glucagon prior to barium meals suggested and double contrast barium meals [DCBM] are seriously needed to replace our SCBM to reduce the rates of false positive and negative results in diagnosis of active DU. The endoscopic results of the patients were studied

RESUMEN

463 patients underwent upper G.I.T. endoscopy in the period of one year [from July 1978 to June 1979] in Arbil Hospital. Duodenal ulcer was found to be the most common single disorder [117 cases, 25.3%] and its peak age incidence and sex distribution discussed. Chronic inflammatory disorders of stomach and/ or duodenum formed a common endoscopic and histopathologic finding [160 cases, 34.7%] and showed to be an important cause of ulcer dyspepsia without ulcer syndrome in our area. Cancer of oesophagus found to be not uncommon with female prepordenance. Upper G.I.T. endoscopy proved to be safe and the single diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of many upper G.I.T. disorders

RESUMEN

Renal stones weighing more than 100 g are rare, because most stones cause arrest of renal function before they reach giant size. A case of giant renal calculus is reported weighing 550 g, which is the largest stone to be reported from Iraq. A summary of the large stones reported in the literature is included

RESUMEN

Looking back through the emergency records of the operation theatre, there were 1.225 cases labeled as acute appendicitis in the preoperative charts during the two years period, January, 1972 to December, 1973. The operative findings of these cases were studied carefully and the findings were compaired to similar ones reported from other centers. Emphasis was put upon the finding in those whom the appendix was found normal at surgery
