RESUMEN

To determine the prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy, midstream urine samples from 505 pregnant women in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, were screened using urine culture and urinalysis. Urine cultures showed heavy growth [>/= 10[5] colony forming units/mL] in 4.8% [24/505] of the samples; 16/24 [66.7%] of these isolates were Escherichia coli. Microscopic examination had the highest sensitivity [67%], while nitrite dipstick testing showed the highest specificity and positive predictive value [99% and 57% respectively]. Antibiotic sensitivity tests carried out on the positive culture samples showed high sensitivity to gentamicin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and fosfomycin

RESUMEN

We investigated 143 patients with various classes of liver disease and 120 healthy subjects for serological markers of hepatitis C and B viruses. We found a prevalence rate of 37.1% of anti-HCV markers in patients with liver disease [cases], and 4.2% and in the control group. HBsAg was detected in 33.6% of cases and 13.3% of the controls. Anti-HCV and HBsAg were detected in 7.7% of cases but were not detected in the controls. Anti-HCV, HBsAg, anti-HBe and anti-HDV were detected in three patients. Serum protein electrophoresis results showed elevated gammaglobulin and low albumin in patients positive for anti-HCV who had liver disease

RESUMEN

The bacteriostatic effects of the boiled aqueous Prosopis farcta fruit extract was studied against different B-haemolytic streptococci isolated from patients and the results indicate that such B-haernolytic streptococcus isolates were sensitive to the extract. It seems that there is certain natural chemical inhibitor[s] in this plant

RESUMEN

The antimicrobial properties of the aqueous extract of Prosopis farcta fruit was studied in vitro on different Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial isolates The extract was found to be active against all the bacteria tested It seems that the antimicrobial activities of the extract were obtained With increased concentrations and was obvious With Gram positive more than with Gram negative. The results suggest the possible presence of natural chemical inhibitor[s] that might be of value in therapeutic application of this extract
