RESUMEN

Background: The oxidative stress and inflammation are cooperative events involved in atherosclerosis development. In the present study we assessed the association of MDA, antioxidant markers, high sensitive C - reactive protein [hs-CRP] and lipid status parameters in the patients with coronary artery disease [CAD]. Significant risk factors such as cigarette and diabet were excluded from the study. Methods: Oxidative stress parameters for example Malondialdehyde [MDA], antioxidant markers including: erythrocyte superoxide dismutase[SOD], Glutathion peroxidase [GPX], Total antioxidant capacity[TAC], The inflammation marker and serum lipid status parameters were measured in 120 subjects including 60 CAD patients with angiographically diagnosed CAD and 60 CAD-free subjects as a control group, also diabetics, smoking patients, patients with malignancy, renal and liver disease, and other disease were excluded from the study. Results: The serum MDA and hs-CRP levels were increased significantly as compared to controls. However, erythrocyte SOD, GPX activities and TAC level were reduced significantly in patients [P‹0.05 in all cases]. The levels of total cholesterol, Triglyceride, LDL-C were significantly higher and that of HDL-C was meaningfully lower than those of control [P‹0.05 in all cases]. Conclusion: The association between oxidative stress parameters, antioxidant markers, the inflammation index and lipid status parameters suggest their involvement in atherosclerosis development that may lead to CAD progression

RESUMEN

In order to investigate the molecular diversity of mtDNA in Azeri population, 133 Azeri subjects inhabiting different regions of Azerbaijan [Iran] were selected. Blood samples were taken from these subjects for mtDNA extraction. The extracted mtDNA samples were then studied by the PCR-RFLP method. Fourteen haplogroups were characterized from which 82% were identified as European specific haplogroups. The H haplogroup was the most frequent and 79 haplotypes were specified. In this study, the Iranian Azeri population was found to be a heterogenic population where all the specific haplogroups of Asians, Europeans and Africans were present in the studied population. Comparing the haplogroups of the present investigation with other populations indicated a very close similarity with other Iranian populations, but was different from haplogroups of other Asian populations who also speak the Azeri language

RESUMEN

It is well documented that coronary artery bypass grafting [CABG] with cardiopulmonary bypass [CPB] causes ischemia and oxidative stress of the whole body. To compare the effect of on - pump and off -pump CABG on the induction of the oxidative stress and the metabolism of homocysteine which is involved in the synthesis of glutathione was investigated in the CABG patients during the early postoperative period. Plasma homocysteine, folate total antioxidant capacity [TAC] and malonedialdehyde [MDA] were determined by standard methods on blood samples obtained from 40 patients undergoing CABG, preoperatively and at 0, 12, 48, 120 hours and 6 months after surgery, The patients were divided into two matched groups. One of the groups underwent off - pump and the other on - pump CABG. A marked reduction of homocysteine, folate and significant elevation of MDA were noticed at 0, 12, 48 hours after operation in the both groups [P<0.05]. A negative and marked correlation between homocysteine and TAC but a positive and significant correlation between homocysteine and MDA were observed [P<0.05 in the both groups]. In CABG operation because of oxidative stress and consumption of GSH [Reduced Glutathione] immediate reduction in the plasma levels of homocyteine occurs in the both techniques. However using off pump CABG induction of oxidative stress and changes in plasma levels of homocysteine are not as high as on- pump CABG. The on-pump technique was correlated with a faster decrease in the homocysteine level during the first 12 hours and with a faster and higher elevation of the homocysteine concentration 12-48 hours postoperatively
