RESUMEN

Serum ascorbic acid, copper, iron, ceruloplasmin and transferrin were studied in intestinal bilharzial patients with liver cirrhosis as well as for urinary bilharzial patients [infected with viral hepatitis] before and after treatment. Ascorbic acid, serum iron and transferrin decreased markedly, whereas, serum copper, ceruloplasmin significantly increased in cases with liver cirrhosis and cases infected with viral hepatitis as compared to normal controls. After treatment of hepatitis, ascorbic acid, ceruloplasmin, serum iron and transferrin showed lower levels, but copper increased than controls. Moreover, total proteins, albumin, total globulins, alpha-and beta-lipoproteins were examined. Total proteins, albumin slightly decreased for liver cirrhosis, while those infected with viral hepatitis slightly increased. Total globulins were almost at normal level. In liver cirrhosis, alpha-lipoprotein significantly decreased. On the other hand, beta-lipoprotein slightly increased. In cases with viral hepatitis, beta-lipoprotein markedly increased but alpha-lipoprotein slightly decreased. Total globulins and beta-lipoprotein slightly increased after treatment, but total proteins, albumin, alpha- lipoprotein showed decreased levels as compared to normal controls

RESUMEN

The object of this investigation is to study the nutritive value of Phaseolus Mungo Linn, which is not uncommon source of protein and some essential mineral elements, e.g. calcium, magnesium, potassium...etc. It has been shown that the tested Phaseolus Mungo seeds contain the all essential amino acids especially lysine which exists in considerable amounts. Comparative study of extraction of protein from defatted Phaseolus Mungo by sodium carbonate, bicarbonate, sodium hydroxide and sodium chloride of different concentrations, showed that they can be arranged in the following decreasing order according to their extracting ability: sodium chloride>sodium hydroxide > sodium carbonate > sodium bicarbonate. Similarly the abilities of these solvents for extracting the essential amino acids from defatted Phaseolus Mungo seeds were almost the same i.e. sodium chloride > sodium hydroxide > sodium carbonate > sodium bicarbonate > water. However, the proteins extracted from defatted seeds by the previous solvents include sulphur-containing amino acids. The amount of which is in the following increasing order: water < sodium carbonate < sodium hydroxide < sodium bicarbonate < sodium chloride. This indicates that sodium chloride solutions are quite superior to all other tested solutions

RESUMEN

Serum proteins have been studied by both simple and immuno-agar gel electrophoresis in thirteen cretin cases and eleven normal controls aged from 4.5 - 12.0 years. Application of the two techniques for studying serum protein in hypothyroidism threw sortie light on variations in the protein components and hence would help in proper treatment and quick alleviation of the manifest complications of the disease. Data showed hypoalbuminaemia, concomitant with decreased thyroxine level, hyper-glycoproteinaemia as well as hyperlipoprote inaemia which were found to be difficult to explain and increased caeruloplasmin accompanied with a corresponding increase in serum copper. A significant increased transferrin level, but with a concomitant significant decrease in serum iron. Normal gamma gobulin level was found in almost all cases. The significance of these results is discussed
