RESUMEN

We investigated recent epidemiologic trends regarding campylobacteriosis vs. nontyphoidal salmonellosis (NTS), a previously known leading cause of bacterial enterocolitis in Korean children. Among 363 hospitalized children with acute inflammatory diarrhea, Campylobacter (18.7%) was the most frequently detected pathogen using multiplex polymerase chain reaction tests followed by Salmonella (15.4%). Children with campylobacteriosis were older than children with NTS (112.6 months [interquartile range (IQR) 66.0–160.1] vs. 53 months [IQR 31.0–124.0], P < 0.001) and had higher prevalences of abdominal cramping and stool hemoglobin. Campylobacteriosis may be suspected as a primary cause of acute inflammatory diarrhea in hospitalized school-aged Korean children and adolescents.

RESUMEN

Objective To investigate antimicrobial resistance and ceftriaxone resistance mechanisms in clinically isolated nontyphoidal Salmonella(NTS),and provide evidence for the prevention and control of NTS infection and rational use of antimicrobial agents. Methods 108 NTS isolates were isolated from stool specimens of outpatients with acute diarrhea in the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University and Tianjin Medical University General Hospital from May to October of 2014,NTS were performed antimicrobial susceptibility testing;non-ceftriaxone-susceptible isolates were typed by serological, multilocus sequence (MLST),and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE)methods,extended-spectrumβ-lactamase (ESBL)detection and AmpC genes were detection. Results Among 108 NTS isolates,mono-drug resistance rate to 11 antimicrobial agents was 49.07% (n= 53),multidrug resistance rate was17.59% . Susceptibility rates to nalidixic acid, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, and ertapenem were 61.11% ,66.67% ,68.52% ,97.22% ,and 100.00% respectively. Three non-ceftriaxone-susceptible NTS isolates were detected,2 were ST11 Salmonellaenterica serotype (Sa8709,Sa8771),1 was ST34 Salmonellatyphimurium serotype(Sa8763). Cluster analysis of PFGE revealed that Sa8709 was highly similar to Sa8771 strains(91 .70% ), but the similarity to Sa8763 was low(55.80% );Sa8709 strain carried CTX-M gene,Sa8771 strain carried CTX-M and TEM genes,Sa8763 strain carried OXA gene. Conclusion Clinically isolated NTS in this area are low resistant to fluoroquinolones, multidrug resistant strains carrying ESBLs have emerged.

RESUMEN

Nontyphoidal Salmonella infection often results in acute gastroenteritis, but extraintestinal infection presenting as a subdural empyema is unusual. We report a case of a 67-year-old man diagnosed with a subdural empyema caused by Salmonella group B that developed after evacuation of a subdural hematoma. To our knowledge, this is the first such case report in Korea.

Genus salmonella includes enterobacteriaes responsible of a great amount of infectious diseases. Focal complications are not frecuent. We conducted a 5 retrospective study between 1996 and 2002. We included 153 cases with salmonella infection, 13 of which (8, 5%) with ages between 17 and 80 years (median 37) presented focal complications. Nine of the patients were male (69%) and in 7 cases (54%) risk factors were present, 12 (93%) presented previously gastroenteric signs. Microbiological diagnosis established through stool examination (5 cases), in 6 (46%) with blood culture, in other 3 cases, both were positive. Complications included splenic abscess, pneumonia, endocarditis, endarteritis, sepsis, hepatitis and reactive arthritis. No clear seasonal pattern was established. Eight patients (64%) received ciprofloxacin. Three patients were surgically treated. Two patients died. Conclusion: In our series prevalence and morbimortality in focal complications is high. The most common presentation was sepsis (4 cases), pneumonia (3) and splenic abscess (2). Bacteraemia was documented in a high percentage of cases. No seasonal pattern was established...
