RESUMEN

The most severe drought of this century in the Amazon rainforest, which was caused by El Niño, occurred from 2015 to 2016. With a focus on the ecophysiology of the regrowth of the Brazil nut tree, Bertholletia excelsa, it was investigated how the progression of the drought of 2015-2016 affected the physiological traits of the coppice regrowth of B. excelsa. The experiment was carried out in a ten-year-old plantation of Brazil nut trees, which had been subjected to thinning and coppice regrowth two years earlier. In the sprouts grown on the stumps of cut trees, the following treatments were applied: (T1) thinning to one sprout per stump; (T2) thinning to two sprouts per stump, and (T3) maintenance of three sprouts per stump. Thinning treatments did not alter the growth and ecophysiological traits of the Brazil nut tree sprouts, though the phosphorus content of the leaves was higher in T1. However, the progression of the drought in 2015-2016 negatively affected the growth (height) and gas exchange of sprouts of all treatments. In addition, an increase of around 37% was observed in the intrinsic wateruse efficiency. Concerning photochemical performance, no alterations were observed. Therefore, drought stress promoted a negative effect on sprout growth and affected traits related to the photosynthesis of the B. excelsa sprouts independently of the number of sprouts per stump.(AU)

Objective:To reveal the dynamic changes of flavonoids secondary metabolites and relevant genes expressions in the process of germination of tartary buckwheat seeds by investigating the content of catechins, epicatechins, rutin, and quercetin, and the expressions of their relevant genes in tartary buckwheat sprouts and seedlings,in order to provide scientific basis for the selection of high-quality, high-nutrition tartary buckwheat sprouts.Method:Contents of catechin, epicatechin, rutin, and quercetin in tartary buckwheat sprouts and seedlings were detected by UPLC-ESI-QQQ-MS,and the expression levels of genes relating to flavonoids synthesis in tartary buckwheat sprouts and seedlings were detected by real-time quantitative PCR.Result:There were differences between tartary buckwheat sprouts and seedlings in the relative contents of catechin, epicatechin, rutin and quercetin,as well as the expressions of relevant genes in the synthesis pathway, including FtPAL,FtC4H,Ft4CL,FtCHS,FtCHI,FtF3H,FtF3'H,FtFLS,FtDFR,FtLAR,FtANS,FtANR. The contents of flavonoids and the expressions of relevant genes in tartary buckwheat sprouts were higher than those in tartary buckwheat seedlings. Conclusion:The higher accumulation of secondary metabolites and flavonoids in tartary buckwheat sprouts may be related to tartary buckwheat seeds' resistance to the external environment in the initial growth stage of germination. From the perspective of application, there are more flavonoids in tartary buckwheat sprouts than in tartary buckwheat seedlings, indicating that tartary buckwheat sprouts have a higher nutritional value.

RESUMEN

Objective:To explore the allelopathic effect of garlic volatiles on Angelica sinensis by studying the allelopathic effect of both living garlicand isolated garlic sprout volatiles on A. sinensis, and provide certain theoretical basis for Angelica garlic interplanting mode to alleviate the stress of continuous cropping A. sinensis. Method:Through the determination and analysis of the growth indexes and leaf protective enzyme system of A. sinensis, the adaptability of A. sinensis to continuous cropping stress and non-continuous cropping stress environment under the influence of the volatiles of living garlic and isolated garlic sprout as well as the mechanism of resistant growth and development were discussed. Result:The overall analysis showed that the growth index and leaf protective enzyme activity of isolated garlic sprout with alleloinductive treatment(DC2)under continuous cropping stress were increased by 17.51% and 48.34% respectively as compared with those under single cropping(CK1). The growth index and leaf protective enzyme activity of angelica under continuous cropping and intercropping(LC2)were increased by 16.63% and 36.65% as compared with those under monocrop cropping(CK2). Those indicated that the volatiles of isolated garlic sprout had more significant effect than those of live garlic on alleviating the stress of continuous cropping of A. sinensis. Conclusion:Regardless of the presence of continuous cropping obstacle, appropriate concentrations of living garlic and isolated garlic sprout volatiles had an allelopathic promoting effect on angelica root growth index and leaf protective enzyme activity, and the effect was more obvious in continuous cropping stress conditions,so intercropping garlic has a certain role in alleviating angelica's continuous cropping stress.

RESUMEN

@#Introduction: Increased metabolism during pregnancy and breastfeeding results in increased oxidative stress among mothers. However, daily intake of foods containing antioxidants can improve antioxidant and inflammatory status. The objectives of this research were to formulate a soya bean sprout protein milk (SSPM) functional drink; to know its protein and isoflavone contents; and its effect on interleukin 6 (IL-6) level in plasma and breast milk (BM) of breastfeeding mothers. Methods: The study begun with the production of soya bean sprout protein extract (SSPE), followed by preparing five formulated SSPM, namely SSPE, low-calorie sweetener, fructose, skim milk, and salt. The formulated products were subjected to organoleptic test on a scale of 1 (extremely dislike) to 5 (extremely like). Fifty mothers aged 20-35 years who had a newborn up to six months old, in good health condition, and with informed consent were recruited. They were randomly divided into two groups: group I was fed SSPM for two months, 150 ml/day every morning, and group II was treated as placebo. Data were analysed with one-way analysis and paired sample t-test. Results: The preferred SSPM composed of 65.0% SSPE, 1.5% low-calorie sweetener, 6.0% fructose, 27.0% skim milk, 0.5% salt, and containing 13.77±0.001% protein and 229.9±0.001mg/g isoflavone content. Two months after intervention, there was a decrease in the level of IL-6 by 82.5% in the plasma (p=0.015) and 68.1% in BM (p<0.05). Body mass index (BMI) decreased from 22.77 to 20.64 kg/m2 (p=0.019). Conclusion: SSPM is a potential anti-inflammatory agent and has health benefits for breastfeeding mothers.

RESUMEN

Choosing cultivars that require less chilling temperatures to overcome dormancy is crucial, for example, peaches that grow in subtropical areas, which is not an appropriate climate for them. Thus, alternative techniques are necessary to induce sprouting. Yet there are not many available products in market, restricting options for fruit growers to a reduced number of chemical molecules, which are often harm the health to applicators. Therefore, this study aimed to assess phenological cycles and productive performance of three peach cultivars, submitted to foliar nitrogen fertilizer and calcium nitrate to induce sprouting. This study took place at Experimental Orchard of School of Agriculture (FCA, UNESP), Botucatu, state of São Paulo. Three peach cultivars were evaluated: 'Douradão', 'BRS Kampai' and 'BRS Rubimel' by applying four doses of foliar nitrogen fertilizer (FNF) at 0, 1.25, 2.50 and 3.75%; associated with 4% calcium nitrate. A 3x4 factorial arrangement (3 cultivars X 4 FNF doses) in a randomized block design was used, with 4 replicates and 2 plants per plot, totalizing 96 plants. Results indicated that FNF positively affected cultivars development, providing wider sprouting, flowering and fruit set; consequently, greater production. Then FNF became a good alternative to induce sprouting in peaches at mild winter temperatures. Moreover, 'BRS Rubimel' presented high sowing percentage associated with low flowering and fruit set percentages, that is, low production mainly caused by its lack of adaptability to studied region

To further study the mechanism of sprout tumble caused by drought, drought stress was simulating with 30% PEG 6000,physiological,and then the morphological changes of Pinellia ternata cells at different treatment time were detected. The results indicated that, along with the period of drought stress continued, the contents of chlorophyll and water potential were decreased, relative electrical conductivity, contents of soluble sugar and MDA increased. Sprout tumble of P. ternata first occurred on the fourth day during drought stress, large scale of sprout tumble appeared on the eighth day with about 73% of tumble rate. The nuclei exposed to drought stress for 2 days were flattened, lobed, invalidated or irregular in shape and significant showed the apoptotic morphological characteristics. Adenylate transferase( ANT) gene expressions were inhibited by drought, with the rapid increase of Caspase-3 enzyme activity, the cell death rate increased. All this proves that the essence of sprout tumble caused by drought is programmed cell death, which may be a self dormancy protection mechanism of P. ternata against adverse environment.

RESUMEN

Objective: To evaluate the protective effect of peanut sprout extract (PSE) against paraquat (PQ) induced SK-N-SH cells. Methods: Three groups of cells were used in the experiment, together with a fourth, control group. One group was treated with PQ, the second group was treated with PSE, and the third group was pre-treated with PSE. The control group was untreated. Cell viability and toxicity were detected by MTT assay, cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) was detected by Muse Cell Analyzer, quantitative RT-PCR was applied to investigate the expression of SIRT1 and a-synuclein genes, and Ab42 was detected by western blot. Results: The 50% effective concentration of PQ was 0.75 mmol/L. PSE had no sig-nificant cytotoxicity at a concentration of 1.5 mg/mL. In the group of cells pre-treated with PSE, cell death was significantly inhibited. In the PQ treated group, PQ was increased in the intracellular ROS in the cells. Intracellular ROS was significantly decreased in the cells treated with PSE and also those pre-treated with PSE. PSE significantly downregulated the expression of SIRT1 and a-syn genes, and it was found that PQ significantly increased b-amyloid 42 levels whereas this action was inhibited by PSE. Conclusions: PSE has neuroprotective activities against oxidative stress in SK-N-SH cells induced by PQ, suggesting that PSE is a highly promising agent in the preven-tion of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUD/OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted in order to investigate the effect of peanut sprout extracts (PSE) on health indices in overweight and obese women (BMI > or = 23 kg/m2). SUBJECTS/METHODS: Subjects were divided into three groups by double-blind randomized trial; the Placebo group (n = 15) and the Low PSE group (2.6 g PSE/day, n = 15), and the High PSE group (5.8 g PSE/day, n = 15). Subjects consumed 12 capsules per day, three times a day, 30 min before meals, for 4 weeks. Anthropometric data, blood biochemical variables, and dietary intake were evaluated before and after the experiments. RESULTS: In the Low and High PSE group, the waist circumference showed a significant decrease between pre- and post-test. In the Low PSE group, the reduction of systolic blood pressure between pre- and post-test was statistically significant. Serum LDL or triglyceride levels in both Low and High PSE groups were significantly decreased, and serum alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase were significantly decreased only in the Low PSE group. The parameters regarding erythrocyte and leucocyte counts showed no significant differences between pre- and post-test among groups, which suggested the safety of intake of peanut sprouts as a dietary supplement. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that PSE supplementation improves abdominal obesity and overall health indices. Therefore, an appropriate amount of peanut sprouts may be a plausible effective agent for obesity and obesity related health problems in obese women.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUD/OBEJECTIVES: This study aims to find out the effects of peanut sprout extracts on weight controls and protein expressions of transcription factors related to adipocyte differentiation and adipocytokine in rats under high-fat diets. MATERIALS/METHODS: Four week-old Sparague-Dawley (SD) were assigned to 4 groups; normal-fat (NF) diets (7% fat diet), high-fat (HF) diets (20% fat diet), high fat diets with low peanut sprout extract (HF + PSEL) diet (20% fat and 0.025% peanut sprout extract), and high fat diets with high peanut sprout extract (HF + PSEH) diet (20% fat and 0.05% peanut sprout extract). Body weight changes, lipid profiles in adipose tissue, and the mRNA protein expressions, such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma), CCAAT element binding protein alpha (C/EBP alpha), leptin, and adiponectin, were determined. RESULTS: After 9 weeks of feeding, the HF + PSEH group had significantly less weight gains than the HF group (P < 0.05). However, the total dietary intakes or food efficiency ratios among groups were not significantly different. The weight of epididymal fat in HF + PSEH group, 3.61 +/- 0.5 g, or HF + PSEL group, 3.80 +/- 0.7 g, was significantly lower than the HF group, 4.39 +/- 0.4g, (P < 0.05). Total lipids and total cholesterol in adipose tissue were significantly decreased in HF + PSEH group compared to those in the HF group, respectively (P < 0.05). PSEH supplementation caused AST and ALT levels to decrease when it compared to HF group, but it was not statistically significant. The protein expression of PPARgamma in HF + PSEH group was significantly lower than the HF group (P < 0.05). Comparing with the HF group, the protein expression of adiponectin in HF + PSEH group was significantly increased (P < 0.05). The protein expressions of C/EBP alpha and leptin in HF + PSEH group were lower than the HF group, but it was not statistical significant. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, peanut sprout extract has anti-obesity effect by lowering the expressions of PPARgamma which regulates the expression of adiponectin.

RESUMEN

A sequential clean-up method was developed for the quantification of 10 plant growth regulators in bean sprout by the gas chromatography / mass spectrometry (GC / MS). The analytes were firstly extracted by the acided acetonitrile. Extraction was concentrated and re-dissovled by methanol. Then, it was divided to two aliquots. One of that was analyzed for 2,4-D-butyl ester and 2,4-D-ethyl ester after the purification by QuECHERS cartridge. Another one was treated by MCS solid phase extraction column including diverse eluting steps. After eluting by 5 mL methanol, composition 1 was obtain, concentrated, and methyl esterified by 10% boron trifluoride methanol solution. The treated extract was used for the determination of 4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid, β-naphthyl acetic acid, 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid, indole acetic acid and indole butyric acid. Composition 2 collected by eluting with 5 mL 5% amonium methanol was used for the determination of paclobutrazol, Kinetin, 6-Benzylaminopurine. The clean-up procedures are designed according to different chemistry properties of these plant growth regulators. The results showed that after spiking of 0. 01-0. 1 mg / kg selected plant growth regulators, average recovery ranged from 70. 0% to 93. 2%and relative standard deviation were 5. 2% -12. 3% . Limit of quantification (LOQ S / N≥10) and limit of detection (LOD S / N≥3) were 0. 01-0. 025 mg / kg and 0. 003-0. 008 mg / kg respectively. The developed purification method is easy, fast and accurate, and can be applied to routine test of plant growth regulators in bean sprout.

RESUMEN

3T3-L1 preadipocyte were differentiated to adipocytes, and then treated with 0, 10, 20, and 40 microg/mL of peanut sprout ethanol extract (PSEE). The main component of PSEE is resveratrol which contained 5.55 mg/mL of resveratrol. The MTT assay, Oil-Red O staining, glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) activity, and the triglyceride concentration were determined in 3T3-L1 cells. MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities as well as mRNA expressions of C/EBP beta and C/EBP alpha were also investigated. As the concentration of PSEE in adipocytes increased, the cell proliferation was decreased in a dose-dependent manner from 4 days of incubation (P < 0.05). The GDPH activity (P < 0.05) and the triglyceride concentration (P < 0.05) were decreased as the PSEE treatment concentration increased. The mRNA expression of C/EBPbeta in 3T3-L1 cells was significantly low in groups of PSEE-treated, compared with control group (P < 0.05). The MMP-9 (P < 0.05) and MMP-2 (P < 0.05) activities were decreased in a dose-dependent manner as the PSEE concentration increased from 20 microg/mL. In conclusion, it was found that PSEE has an effect on restricting proliferation and differentiation of adipocytes.

RESUMEN

Certain phenolic compounds are known to exhibit laxative properties. Seed sprouts, such as those of peanut, are known to promote de novo biosynthesis of phenolic compounds. This study was conducted to examine the potential laxative properties of 80% (v/v) ethanolic extract of peanut sprout (PSE), which contains a high concentration of phenolic compounds such as resveratrol. For this, SD rats were orally administered PSE while a control group was incubated with saline. Laxative effects were examined in both groups of rats. Constipation induced by loperamide in SD rats was improved by administration of PSE. Constipated rats showed increased intestinal movement of BaSO4 upon administration of PSE compared to the control, and the groups administered 100 or 1,000 mg PSE/kg bw were not significantly different in transit time of the indicator. However, colon length was not statistically different among the experimental groups, although it was longer in the group incubated with 1 g PSE/kg bw compared to other groups. Further, there was no significant difference in stool number among the experimental groups. Taken together, these findings show that PSE has a laxative effect in a rat model of loperamide-induced constipation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Lacquer contains an allergen, which can cause severe contact dermatitis. Systemic dermatitis resulting from the ingestion of lacquer is quite common in Korea, until now. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to elucidate the clinical features and laboratory findings of systemic contact dermatitis (SCD), due to the ingestion of lacquer in Chungcheongnam-do. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 33 patients with SCD, after ingestion of lacquer from Soonchunhyang University Hospital in Cheonan, over a 6-month period. RESULTS: In this study, 33.3% of patients ate lacquer, as a health food, and some (15.2%) by encouragement of friends or spouse. The most common way of ingestion was the lacquer-boiled chicken (48.5%), but many also ate lacquer tree sprouts (42.4%). The skin lesions developed as erythematous maculopapular eruptions, erythema multiforme, erythroderma, purpura, wheals and vesicles. On laboratory findings, 13 patients (52%) exhibited leukocytosis and 11 patients had elevated eosinophil counts. CONCLUSION: The general public is becoming more aware of the toxic effects of lacquer ingestion, but still does not fully understand the dangers of lacquer tree sprouts, and this ignorance is frequently causing SCD in Chungcheongnam-do.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study is to monitor genetically modified bean sprouts at traditional markets in Seoul and to investigate perception of traditional market merchants and high school students on genetically modified organisms (GMOs). We analyzed 30 bean sprouts that were selected at 11 traditional markets in Seoul using the method of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Also, we compared perception of GMOs between merchants (n = 30) and students (n = 126). Knowledge test about GMOs was performed by students. The result of PCR, 16.7% of bean sprouts were confirmed as GM bean sprouts (n = 5). Students had significantly more exposure to information about GMOs than merchants (p < 0.05). Major information sources about GMOs were from mass media (television, newspaper and radio). About half of subjects were not aware that they eat GMOs and GMOs are sold to consumers. Only 17.3% of subjects had constant eating intent for GMOs after perceiving foods that he/she usually eats are GMOs. 51.3% of subjects had willingness to purchase GMOs if GMOs have same quality and lower cost than natural foods. 37.2% of subjects thought that GMOs would be harmful to humans. Students had more positive perception of GMOs' side effects than merchants (p < 0.01). There was no merchant who knew labeling of GMOs. 19.1% of students knew labeling of GMOs. Students' mean percentage of correct answers of six questions about GMOs was 45.2%. Therefore, providing adequate information about GMOs is needed for consumer's choice whether to purchase GMOs or not.

RESUMEN

Background: Sulforaphane (SFN), a compound abundant in broccoli sprouts (BS), protects cells from oxidative injury by activating nrf2-mediated antioxidant enzymes. Sulforaphane also shows bactericidal activity against H. pylori in vitro. The aim of this study was to determine if daily intake of SFN-rich BS inhibits H. pylori colonization and mitigated gastritis in H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa in mice and humans.
Methods: Study 1: Nrf2+/+ and nrf2−/− C57BL/6 female mice were infected with H.pylori Sydney Strain; SS1. Mice were maintained for 2 mo. on a high salt diet (7.5% NaCl), supplemented with or without BS containing approximately 2.5 mM SFN. Degree of gastritis was evaluated by updated Sydney system. Study 2: Fifty subjects infected with H. pylori were randomly assigned to either the BS group (n=25) or the Alfalfa Sprouts (AS) group (n=25). All subjects were asked to eat BS 70 g/day (containing approximately 180 mg SFN) or AS 70 g/day (no SFN) for 2 months. H.pylori colonization was evaluated by measurement of HpSA. The degree of gastritis was evaluated by measuring serum levels of pepsinogen (PG) I and II.
Results: Study 1: BS treatment decreased Hp colonization and mitigated gastritis in nrf2+/+ but not in nrf2−/− mice. Study 2: Two months intervention with BS decreased HpSA values and serum levels of PG I and II, while AS showed on effect.
Conclusion: Daily intake of SFN-rich BS suppresses H.pylori colonization and improves gastritis in H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa via nrf2-dependent mechanisms.
