RESUMEN

The oyster culture has the incrusting organism as problem for production, in this context, it evaluated as biological control against incrusting organism and sediments the introduction of gastropod Tegula atra (Lesson, 1830) in Chilean oysters (Triostrea chilensis Phillippi, 1844) cultures in conditions of starvation presence and absence located in floating cages and bottom cultures. The predation and mechanic effect on T. atra grazing generated a decreasing in seven days of 19.8% and 13.7% of incrusting organisms in cage culture and bottom sediments by effects of gastropods without starvation respectively. Whereas it had a decrease of 12.6% and 11.4% of incrusting organisms in cage culture and bottom sediments by effects of gastropods with starvation respectively. The incrusting organism removed were mainly algae, colonial ascidia, polychaeta, bryozoan and small crustaceans.


A cultura da ostra tem como problema de produção o organismo incrustante, neste contexto, avaliou como controle biológico contra organismos incrustantes e sedimentos a introdução do gastrópode Tegula atra (Lesson, 1830) em culturas de ostras chilenas (Triostrea chilensis Phillippi, 1844) em condições de presença e ausência de fome, localizadas em gaiolas flutuantes e culturas de fundo. A predação e o efeito mecânico no pastejo de T. atra geraram uma diminuição em sete dias de 19,8% e 13,7% dos organismos incrustantes na cultura em gaiola e nos sedimentos de fundo, por efeito de gastrópodes sem fome, respectivamente. Considerando que houve decréscimo de 12,6% e 11,4% dos organismos incrustantes na cultura em gaiola e nos sedimentos de fundo pelos efeitos dos gastrópodes com fome respectivamente. Os organismos incrustantes removidos eram principalmente algas, ascídias coloniais, poliquetas, briozoários e pequenos crustáceos.

Abstract Gurltia paralysans is the causal agent of gurltiosis in domestic cats in South America. Although the life cycle of G. paralysans is unknown, it is thought that gastropods could act as intermediate hosts (IHs), as is the case for several nematodes in the Angiostrongylidae family. The aim of this study was to search for G. paralysans larvae in terrestrial gastropods and determine their role in the life cycle of this nematode species. Terrestrial gastropod samples (n=835) were collected in Punucapa, Valdivia, southern Chile, where cases of gurltiosis had been reported before. The samples included species from the families Arionidae, Limacidae, Helicidae and Milacidae. All gastropods were subjected to enzymatic digestion to isolate G. paralysans larvae. Ten percent of the gastropod samples were analyzed using seminested PCR targeting the 28S rRNA gene, while 2.6% were analyzed by histopathological examination. The results indicated the absence of G. paralysans when using any of the three methods. In conclusion, further studies are needed to evaluate specific species of aquatic or native gastropods acting as possible IHs (in this geographic location).


Resumo Gurltia paralysans é o agente etiológico da gurltiose em gatos domésticos na América do Sul. Embora o ciclo biologico de G. paralysans seja desconhecido, provavelmente é indireto com gastrópodes atuando como hospedeiros intermediários (HIs), como no caso de vários nematoides da família Angiostrongylidae. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a presença de larvas de G. paralysans em gastrópodes terrestres para avaliar seu papel no ciclo de vida do parasito. Amostras de gastrópodes terrestres (n = 835) foram coletadas em Punucapa, Valdivia, sul do Chile, onde casos de gurltiose foram relatados anteriormente. As amostras incluíram espécies das famílias Arionidae, Limacidae, Helicidae e Milacidae. Todos os gastrópodes foram submetidos à digestão enzimática para isolar as larvas de G. paralysans. 10% das amostras foram analisadas, utilizando-se seminested PCR para o gen 28S RNAr de G. paralysans, enquanto 2,6% foram analisados ​​por exame histopatológico. Os resultados indicaram ausência de G. paralysans em todos os três métodos. Os dados permitem concluir que são necessários mais estudos para avaliar espécies específicas de gastrópodes aquáticos ou nativos, que atuam como possíveis hospedeiros intermediários nessa localização geográfica.

Abstract Angiostrongylus vasorum is a pulmonary artery parasite of domestic and wild canid. On molluscs, intermediate host, first stage larvae (L1) are found after the first day of infection, in the 8th L2 and in the 30 th L3. It was evaluated L1, L2 and L3 recovered by Baermann technique from Achatina fulica infected with 1000 L1. Fifty larvae/stage were incubated with antibodies anti-β-tubulin, anti-α-tubulin, anti- α-actin, anti-β-actin and anti-collagen, and then with Alexa 633. Fifty larvae/stage were observed with picrosirius red and Oil Red O. It was also observed in the anterior region of L1 the beginning of the chitinous stems development, in the initial portion of the intestine and genital primordium. In L2 anterior region, the papillae, chitinous canes juxtaposed to the mouth and intestines bigger than L1. The L3 musculature is well defined, next to the chitinous stems, there are two round distally arranged from each other. It was observed the whole extension of the intestine genital primordium and intense cellularity in the L3 distal portion. With the picrosirius red the L1, L2 and L3 musculature could be observed, as the nerve ganglia on L3. Oil Red O revealed that L1, L2 and L3 store energy on lipid droplets.


Resumo Angiostrongylus vasorum é um parasito de artérias pulmonares dos canídeos domésticos e silvestres. Nos moluscos, hospedeiros intermediários, encontram-se no primeiro dia após a infecção, larvas de primeiro estágio (L1), ao 8° L2 e ao 30° L3. Avaliou-se L1, L2 e L3 recuperadas pela técnica de Baermann de Achatina fulica infectada com 1.000 L1. Incubou-se 50 larvas/estádio com anticorpos anti-β-tubulina, anti-α-tubulina, anti-β-actina e anti-colágeno e, em seguida, com anticorpo Alexa 633. Observaram-se também 50 larvas/estádio com picrosirius red e Oil Red O, na região anterior da L1, o início do desenvolvimento de hastes quitinosas, a porção inicial do intestino e o primórdio genital. Na região anterior de L2, papilas, bastões quitinosos justapostos à boca e ao intestino maior que em L1. A musculatura de L3 é bem desenvolvida, próximo às hastes quitinosas, há duas estruturas redondas dispostas distalmente uma da outra. Observaram-se também toda a extensão do intestino, o primórdio genital e a intensa celularidade na porção distal da L3. Com o picrosirius red observou-se a musculatura de L1, L2 e L3, assim como, gânglios nervosos na L3. Oil Red O revelou que L1, L2 e L3 armazenam energia em gotículas lipídicas.

BACKGROUND Intermediate hosts are key organisms in maintaining parasite life cycles, because they can act as amplifiers in the transmission from natural reservoirs to humans. One of the most important groups of intermediate hosts for zoonotic nematode infections are gastropods,slugs and snails. These are essential organisms in the larval development of Angiostrongylus species. OBJECTIVES The objective of this paper is to review reports of Angiostrongylus spp. in naturally infected gastropods from the Americas, taking into account the diagnostic methods used in their identification, to be able to provide more accurate list of their intermediate hosts. We also discuss the factors that aid the dispersion of Angiostrongylus spp. in the Americas. METHODS This study reviews scientific publications and book sections on Angiostrongylus spp. in the Americas, including original works assessing larvae of Angiostrongylus in intermediate hosts. The eligible reports were classified accordingly to their geographical location, year of first record, and the larvae identification methodologies used. Digital repositories were used for the search. The bioecological characteristics of the main intermediate hosts are summarised. FINDINGS A total of 29 gastropod species that are naturally infected with Angiostrongylus spp. have been reported as intermediate hosts, 16 of which are land snails, two are freshwater snails, and 11 land slugs. MAIN CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the importance of integrative studies, analysing both the etiological agent and its transmission dynamic in the environment, the biological and ecological characteristics of the hosts, and the impact on host populations. It is necessary to increase interdisciplinary studies to determine the potential epidemiological health risk of angiostrongyliasis in the Americas, and thus be able to establish prevention, monitoring and contingency strategies in the region.

Introduction: The Baixada Maranhense Microregion currently has the highest prevalence of schistosomiasis in the State of Maranhão, likely because this parasitosis is characterized as an occupational disease, and increased contact with water increases the risk of infection by Schistosoma mansoni. This paper reports the results of the first comprehensive freshwater malacological survey performed in the Baixada Maranhense Microregion. Methods: Freshwater mollusks were collected from the twenty-one municipalities of the Baixada Maranhense Microregion and from Bacurituba and Cajapió and were evaluated for infection by trematodes. Results: A total of 9,129 mollusks were collected (sixteen species), which included the first records of six species in the State of Maranhão: Gundlachia radiata, G. ticaga, Hebetancylus moricandi, Plesiophysa guadeloupensis, Pomacea bridgesii diffusa and Omalonyx sp. Biomphalaria glabrata was found in five municipalities, whereas B. straminea was found in nine. Biomphalaria glabrata and B. straminea were observed in syntopy in Pinheiro and São Bento. Of the 990 specimens of B. glabrata and the 2,109 specimens of B. straminea that were exposed to and/or analyzed for the presence of larval trematodes, only a single specimen of B. glabrata (0.1%) from São Bento shed S. mansoni. Other larval trematodes were first observed in mollusks from the State of Maranhão. Conclusions: These results indicate that the study area is epidemiologically important due to the presence of two natural vectors of schistosomiasis and the active transmission of schistosomiasis, which was confirmed in the infected specimen that was collected in this study. .

A ehrlichiose monocítica equina (EME) na região Sul do Rio Grande do Sul tem demonstrado ser importante nas criações de cavalos Crioulos. A enfermidade foi relatada e diagnosticada como causa de diarreia, prejuízos com tratamentos e com a morte de equinos não estabulados, sendo apontada como um fator limitante na criação de equinos em algumas regiões. O modo de transmissão pela via oral, intermediada por trematódeos em ambientes aquáticos, tem sido sustentado. Caracóis dulciaquícolas estão envolvidos como hospedeiros intermediários de trematódeos albergadores de Neorickettsia risticii. Um total de 16.846 caracóis Heleobia foi coletado nos municípios de Arroio Grande, Rio Grande, Palmares do Sul e Santa Vitória do Palmar, 92,2% dos quais foram encontrados nas raízes de aguapés (Eichornea spp.). A frequência de trematódeos presentes nos caracóis variou de 2,3 a 12,8% nas propriedades coletadas. Foram encontrados três tipos de cercárias, morfotipo 1, morfotipo 2 e morfotipo 3, e dois morfotipos de metacercárias nos caracóis. Um total de 357 insetos da ordem Odonata foi coletado, fases de metacercárias foram encontradas no tegumento da subordem Anisoptera com frequência de 5,3%. Mais estudos são necessários para identificar as fases larvais encontradas, bem como para conhecer o hospedeiro definitivo, identificar o parasito adulto e a relação de seu ciclo de vida com a ocorrência da ehrlichiose monocítica equina.


The equine monocytic ehrlichiosis in the region South of the Rio Grande do Sul has demonstrated to be important in the creations of Crioulo horses. It has been reported as cause of diarrhea in equine not surround and as cause of losses with treatments and death of the animals, being pointed as a limited factor in the range breeding in some regions. The way of transmission for the oral way, intermediated for trematodes in aquatic environments, has been supported. Freshwater snails are involved as intermediate hosts of trematodes and harbor of the Neorickettsia risticii. A total of 16,846 Heleobia snails had been collected in the cities of Arroio Grande, Rio Grande, Palmares do Sul and Santa Vitoria do Palmar, 92.2% of which had been found in the roots of aquatics plants (Eichornea spp.). The frequency of trematodes present in the snails varied of 2.3 to 12.8% in the collected regions. Three types of cercariae were found, morphology type 1, morphology type 2 and morphology type 3, and two morphologic type of metacercariae of the snails. A total of 357 insects of the Odonata order were collected, stages of metacercariae had been found in the tissues of suborder Anisoptera with 5.3% of frequency. More studies are necessary for identification of the joined larval phases, as well as knowing the host definitive and identifying the adult parasite and the relation of its cycle of life with the occcurrence of equine monocytic ehrlichiosis.

Cercaria caribbea LVIII Cable, 1963 (Digenea: Cyathocotylidae) was detected from a brackish water gastropod species (Cerithideopsilla cingulata) in a coatal area of Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Province), the Republic of Korea, and its surface ultrastructure was studied using a scanning electron microscope. The cercariae were found freely swimming or enveloped within daughter sporocysts when the snail host was mechanically broken. They were morphologically characterized by a linguiform and ventrally concave body, a long and bifurcated tail, and the presence of a holdfast (=tribocytic) organ posterior to the ventral sucker. On the whole ventral and dorsal surfaces, peg-like tegumental spines were densely distributed. Around the oral sucker, several sensory papillae, each with a short cilium, were distributed, and on the tail, sensory papillae, each with an extensively long cilium, were observed. This is the first record describing a cyathocotylid cercaria from a brackish water gastropod in the Republic of Korea.

Em 1995, ocorreu uma praga de lesmas identificadas como Sarasinula linguaeformis (Semper, 1885), que prejudicou as lavouras situadas entre os municípios de Nova Itaberaba e Planalto Alegre, no oeste do estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Neste artigo analisamos os impactos socioeconômicos provocados pela ocorrência desta praga, que sinalizou a possibilidade, posteriormente verificada, da emergência de casos de angiostrongilíase abdominal. Os dados foram coletados através de observação do estudo soroepidemiológico realizado na região durante o período de agosto de 2000 a agosto de 2001 pela equipe de pesquisa da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), entrevistas com técnicos da Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina S.A. (Epagri-SC) e com cinquenta famílias locais. Para avaliar esses impactos, elaboramos algumas categorias de análise, como: prejuízo econômico; medidas preventivas e mudança de hábitos; estigma e preconceito, que surgiram à luz das narrativas dos sujeitos entrevistados. Ficou evidente a necessidade de se procederem a estudos sobre os aspectos sociológicos dos problemas epidemiológicos, além dos estritamente médico-sanitários.


In 1955 a population explosion of the slug Sarasinula linguaeformis (Semper, 1885) damaged crop plantations in the municipalities of Nova Itaberaba and Planalto Alegre, western of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. In this article we analyze the socioeconomic impacts caused by the emergence of this plague, which raised the suspicion, eventually confirmed, of the occurrence of human cases of abdominal angyostrongiliasis. The data were collected through the observation of a serological study during the period of August 2000 to August 2001 by a research team from the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) together with field technicians from the Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina S.A. (Epagri-SC), and with the members of 50 local families. In order to analyze these impacts, we elaborated several analytical categories as economic losses; preventive measures, habit change and social prejudice, that emerged from the narratives of the residents interviewed. It became evident the need for sociological analyses of epidemiological problems, in addition to strictly medico-sanitary considerations.

Cryptosporidium sp oocysts were detected in snails (Helix aspersa Milller) and slug (Deroceras reticulatum Milller) from the Valparaiso Region, Chile. Snails and slug were collected from public squares and private domestic gardens. Cryptosporidium sp oocysts were recovered from faeces of both species. Ziehl Neelsen stain, nested PCR, and sequencing analysis demonstrated a profile similar to that described for genotype C or 2 of the parasite. These results demonstrate that snails and slug could act as a reservoir and mechanic vector of C. parvum infection for humans and animals. Moreover, gastropods could serve as bioindicators of fecal soil contamination.


Se detectó ooquistes de Cryptosporidium sp en caracoles (Helix aspersa Müller) y babosas (Deroce-ras reticulatum Müller) de la Región de Valparaíso, Chile. La recolección de caracoles y babosas se efectuó en parques públicos y jardines de diferentes hogares. Los ooquistes de Cryptosporidium sp fueron recuperados de las deposiciones de ambas especies. Después de la tinción de Ziehl Neelsen y la RPC anidada, el análisis de secuenciación demostró un patrón similar a lo descrito para el genotipo C o 2 del parásito. Estos resultados demuestran que los caracoles y babosas podrían actuar como reservorio y vectores mecánicos de la infección por Cryptosporidium. parvum para humanos y animales. Además, estos gastrópodos podrían ser usados como bio-indicadores de contaminación fecal del suelo.
