RESUMEN

Sclerosing peritonitis is an unusual fibrosing condition predominantly involving the omentum and simulating carcinoma. The presenting signs and symptoms, imaging examination and cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) status in sclerosing peritonitis sometimes resemble those of ovarian cancer. Thus, the possibility of sclerosing peritonitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma. It may occur idiopathically and secondary to chronic peritoneal dialysis, the use of peritoneovenous shunt, practolol therapy, or in association with ovarian tumors such as ovarian teratoma. We report a case of peritonitis initially suspected as ovarian carcinoma but diagnosed as sclerosing peritonitis associated with teratoma.

RESUMEN

Effects of practolol on the ATPase activity and mitochondrial membrane potential were studied. The drug enhanced the ATPase activity on undamagedmitochondria and showed very little effect on broken mitochondria. No effect was observed on the ATPase activity by F1-isolated. Practolol gives rise to a decrease in the membrane potential upon energization of the mitochondrial membrane. It is possible that the mechanism of action of practolol could be related with alterations of in permeability (Na+, K+, or Ca2+)

RESUMEN

The influence of beta-adrenoceptor antagonists on the spontaneous rate and on force of contraction of the myocardium was studied independently on spontaneously beating right and electrically driven isolated left atria of rabbit. On spontaneous rate, practolol had sympathomimetic effect only, N-isopropylmethoxamine (IMA), had both sympathomimetic as well as depressant effects, whereas alprenolol, procinolol, bunolol and H 35/25 had depressant effects only in higher concentrations. The order of potency was procinolol greater than bunolol greater than alprenolol greater than H 35/25 greater than and IMA. On the contractions of isolated left atria, all beta-adrenoceptor antagonists produced concentration-dependent depressant effect. In relation to procinolol, these agents were 5-125 times less potent for depressing the contractions of left atria by 15% and the order of beta-potency was procinolol greater than alprenolol greater than bunolol = H 35/25 greater than IMA greater than and practolol. The present results indicate that the depressant effects of beta-adrenoceptor antagonists on spontaneous rate of right atria and on contraction of isolated left atria are not related to each other.

RESUMEN

The study was made with the help of a chemitrode placed in various areas of the hypothalamus by the stereotaxic technique, for electrical and chemical stimulation (noradrenaline or isoprenaline) before and after microinjection of respective blockers (phenoxybenzamine or practalol). The results indicated the presence of both alpha and beta-adrenoreceptors in the anterior and dorsomedial hypothalamus producing a depressor response, and, the presence of alpha adrenoreceptors in the posterior and lateral hypothalamus producing a pressor response.

RESUMEN

Phenylephrine exerted a positive chronotropic and inotropic effect on isolated, spontaneously beating, atria of reserpinised rabbits. Addition of phenoxybenzamine and phentolamine resulted in a depression of control contractile amplitude. Practolol, however, was devoid of this effect. The positive inotropic response to phenylephrine was significantly antagonised by all the three blockers used, while positive chronotropic response was annulled by phentolamine and practolol, but not with phenoxybenzamine. It is, therefore, suggested that phenylephrine exerts its cardiostimulant effects through mediation of both alpha and beta-1 adrenoceptors. A probable mechanism of action could be, that phenylephrine acts on some specific chemical group, shared by alpha and beta1 receptors. This specific group is probably blocked by both alpha and betaceptor antagonists separately, so phenylephrine becomes ineffective in presence of these antagonists.

RESUMEN

Aconitine, 10 mug, administered intraventricularly in cats produced cardiae arrhythmias. Intraventricular administration of phenoxybenzamine, propranolol and practolol abolishes the centrally induced cardiac arrhythmias. Intraventricular reserpinization also abolished these cardiac arrhythmias whereas intraventricular administration of 6-hydroxydopamine and tetrabenazine had no effect. Brain stem noradrenaline probably plays a role in these centrally induced cardiac arrhythmias by aconitine.

RESUMEN

Recently several adrenergic beta receptor blocking agents such as dichloroisoprenaline, pronethalol, INPEA, H13/57, propranolol, sotalol, tolamolol, practolol and butoxamine were reported. It has been postulated for some time that there are two subgroups of beta receptors: cardiac receptors (beta 1-eceptor) and peripheral receptors (beta 2-receptor) responsible for vasodilatation and broncholdilatation. More recently, the cardioselective beta blockers have been developed; for example, practolol, and talamolol. Rabbits were anesthetized by the peritoneal injection of urethane 1 gm/kg and observed for 30 minutes. Arrhythmias were produced with lanatocide-C and norepinephrine through the ear vein of the anesthetized rabbits. Arrhythmias such as premature ventricular contraction and ventricular tachycardia were present within 7 minutes to 20 minutes after the injection of lanatocide-C 0.9mg, and within 15 seconds to 2 minutes after the injection of norepinephrine 150ug. Propranolol or practolol were injected before and after the production of the arrhythmias and so Lead II of the electrocardiogram was obtained from nedle electrodes inserted into the skin. Practolol was compared with propranolol on the changes of the heart rates and the arrhytmias produced by the injection of norepinephrine and lanatocide-C. The intravenous injection of propranolol and practolol reduced the heart rate but practolol reduced much lesser than propranolol. All of arrhythmias produced by lanatocide-C in anesthetzedrabbits were not abolished by practolol, but it blocked and prevented the development of arrhythmias in anesthetized rabbits on the administration of norepinephrine.

RESUMEN

A trial with eye drops of practolol, 0.2% and propranolol, 0.1%, and intravenous injection of practolol, 1-4mg/kg. and propranolol, 0.5-2mg/kg. in rabbits was done for the changes of ocular tension. Ocular tension was estimated by Schotz tonometer. The E.C.G. was recorded before and after treatment of the above drugs. In the rabbits all of doses of practolol, topically and systemically applied failed to reduce ocular tension, but propranolol reduced slightly ocular tension which was suggested that the lowering of ocular tension was mediated by its local anesthetic activity.
