Group B-streptococcal carriage in genital tract of women using intrauterine contraceptive device [IUCD]

This study was done on two groups of women, group 1 comprised of 150 women using IUCD and group II included 100 women not using IUCD [control group]. Out of group I group-B streptococci [GBS] was isolated from II vagina samples and 5 cervical samples. In group II, GBS was isolated from 4 vagina samples and 2 cervical sample. However, the difference in the rate of carriage of GBS between IUC users [7.3%] and non users [4%] was not statistically significant. The results showed a positive correlation between the duration of insertion of the loop and the prevalence of GBS

Endometrial ultrasonography using vaginal probe

One hundred and twenty regular menstruation females complaining of infertility have been selected for the study. Vaginal ultrasonography was done twice weekly for all attendants, endometrial biopsy was taken at day 7, 14, 21 and 26 of the cycle using Shermman's Curette. Cases were divided into four groups according to the time of endometrial biopsy to correlate with ultrasound finding. In the first group, the endometrium appears as highly echogenic lumen, echo bisecting the myometrial echoes and the endometrium thickness was 6.4, the endometrium appears highly echogenic and between the two echoes an area of hypoechogenicity. In the third group, the endometrium thickness increased to 8.4 mm and the echopattern has been changed into highly continued echoes. In the fourth group, the same pattern of the third group but it became more echogenic. Study endometrial thickness and morphology by vaginal ultrasonography correlate with endometrial histology under the effect of serum estrogen and progesterone. Vaginal candidiasis and intrauterine contraceptive device

This study was done on 100 women fitted with an intrauterine contraceptive device [IUCD users] as well as 100 women not wearing an IUCD [control group]. None of the subjects had factors known to predispose to infection with candida. In the index group [IUCD users], 16 vaginal samples were positive for candida, and the tail of the IUCD yield positive culture in 19 cases. In the control group, 7 vaginal samples were positive for candida. These findings strongly suggested that the IUCD is a predisposing factor in vaginal colonization by candida

clinical, ultrasonographic and hormones study in cases of hydatidiform mole

Two hundred and eleven cases of proved hydatidiform mole were included in this study. Sixty two cases of these were successfully selected as early as the first missed period and were followed up for their pregnancy until proved to be definitely cases of hydatidiform mole. For this group ultrasonography was repeated every other day and serum HCG-B was assayed once weekly until definite diagnosis was determined. The present study showed that hydatidiform mole included three definite ultrasonographic entities [the massive vesicular change of the chorion, vesicular mole and molar disease]. Similar differentiation was also encountered and was based on the clinical findings and endocrinal activity in this disease. Ultrasonography is a useful tool diagnosing, classifying and anticipating the course and the prognosis of the hydatidiform mole if done before the 14th week of pregnancy and if follow up by ultrasonography is included. After the 14th week of gestation serial serum HCG-B assay may be a useful tool for classifying and anticipating the course of the disease by considering the percentage and the rate of increase
