Résumé

Severe Cerebral Malaria is a serious, life threatening medical emergency, which necessitates immediate hospital management. Quinine and tetracycline are well recognized for its treatment after the appearance of chloroquine, and pyrimethamine-Sulfadoxine resistance [Fansidar] in Africa [East, West], south east Asia, and south and central America. Focal neurological complications such as hemiplegia, cortical blindness or ataxia.etc. are rare. The high risk people are young children 6 months-3 years old, pregnant ladies [primigravida more], nonimmune person or immunocompromized person. Severe Falciparum malaria can present with few or many manifestations in a predisposed person. This case report of 27 years multiparous lady, two weeks post delivery who had headache, fever sweating and brought into hospital with unarousable coma and right sided hemiplegia, hypotension and anemia. She did not respond to parenteral Chloroquine and Fansidar, but recovered full consciousness and movement of quinine HCL and Teracycline

Résumé

Five species of the brown algal genus Sargassum [S. natans, S. fluitans setifolium, S. galapagense and S. parvifolium] from the seashore of Alexandria, Egypt, have been studied for their taxonomy based on a cumulative taxonomic approach in which the authors considered both classical and biochemical criteria. The five species were compared through their morphology, anatomy pigment composition on TLC, pigment absorption spectra and five isozymal systems: a- esterases. Alk, phosphatases, Ac. phosphatases, malate dehydrogcnases and leucine aminopeptidases. The whole represent nine taxonomic markers. Numerical clustering was used to translate the isozymal electrophoretic patterns into individual and average similarity matrices and dendrograms. Based on such a cumulative taxonomic approach, it was found that 1. The five species studied do have enough similarity to stand together within the genus Sargassum. None of them showed to be unique in markers. 2. S. fluitans and S. setifoltum are strongly tied together and could be considered as two varieties of the same species or belonging to sub-genus. 3. S. natan and S. parvifolium are the ones with least number of similar bonds with other species and each of them could stand as a gienuine species 4. S. galapagense proved to have a moderate number of similarity bonds with other species and could also stand as a species by itself. This work proves that relying on one or two taxonomic markers to establish an algal taxonomy is not enough and could be misleading

Résumé

Visnagin-9-sulphonyl chloride [II] was prepared and reacted * with ammonium acetate to give the corresponding sulphonamide [IIIa] which was acetylated to IV. Interaction of II with hydrazine hydrate gave V which reacted with aldehydes and with sulphonyl chlorides to give VI and VII respectively. Oxidation of visnagin [I] with chromic acid gave VIII which reacted with hydrazine hydrate to give the hydrazone [IX]. Interaction of IX with aldehydes and with sulphonyl chlorides gave X and XI respectively. Cyclization of VIII with ethylacetoacetate furnished the alpha.-pyrono -gamma- chomone [XIII] which reacted with aldehydes to give XIV

Résumé

Visnagin [Ib] isolated from the Egyptian plant Ammi visnaga L-selective antispasmodic effect upon the ureter, bronchial, muscles and gall bladder. This led the authors to prepare a number of Visnagin derivatives and analogues in the hope of improving its activity. Thus Ib and its analogues [la, c and d] were reacted with P2S5 in xylene to give the thiones [IIa-d]. Their IR spectra showed the absence of v CO and the presence of v CS at 1150. In addition they gave positive H2O2/BaCl2 oxidation test and lib formed a complex [III] when treated with HgCl2 [a reaction which is characteristic of the thione group
